    When cutting blocks. I learned a quick trick from my mentor when I was a teen. A battery angle grinder with a diamond tooth blade. A quick run along the cut point on three sides then a single strike with a hammer and chisel and they fall apart. Half the time of doing it by hand and the ease of a masonry saw without the need of a heavy masonry saw.

    Yo what’s up Stan I wanted to let you know I moved my entire loan which is 3 acres and the other 2 acres of woods to be a 5 acres in total but I have the ego power plus lawnmower and I was able to cut my entire lawn with 2, 5 amp hour batteries at one 7:5 amp and half of another 7.5 amp hour and still had enough juice to go around with the string trimmer around everything and use the leaf blower to blow off the sidewalks. really is power beyond belief. Stan i hope your day was amazing stayed home today I have no lawns this week because it’s been so dry that if I went and mowed lawns I could essentially burn my clients grass, I don’t want that to happen.so today i mowed my lawn, rain s in the forecast, they always say the landscapers lawn is done last lol. For dinner tonight we had steak Alfredo with fresh broccoli and a like tossed salad. All in all i walked almost 9 miles from mowing, and almost 20,000 steps. So tomorrow will b relaxation day, i also wanted to note, my cousins wedding was amazing, if you ever wanna see the photos, i can send them to your email, or you can check my instagram posts. My account is “Alexander_costa _drip”. Well Stan, i am gonna learn a thing or two from this video and gain the knowledge on how too do a retaining g wall the proper and safe way. God bless and go get em, your pal Alexander costa

That thing is incredible! Have you ever tried the ego back pack blower with all the attachments. Its an incredible powerhouse that just runs and runs. Franky weed whipped without stopping for 1 hour and 45 minutes without running out of juice.

    I must say seriously, I've seen many crews with huge machines lay sewer pipe, grade lots and form sidewalks, curbs and such. But retaining walls are a whole different beast. It's definitely an art but with serious consequences to fix and what not if you don't do it right the first time. Kudos to your guys with the attention to detail and making it look easy. They are the group within the group I would seek to talk to for general advice.

    Depending on the geographical area the codes might be different. As a former inspector in S. Cal. The depth and size of fitting will be determined by the hight of the soil to be retained. Be sure to check you local building codes.

      well said Dan. In TWIN CITIES Minnesota we don't need a permit for walls under 4' tall in most cities-except Minneapolis. Over 4' tall then yes and engineering. Outside of the metro area- you don't need permits or blueprints at all for retaining walls. It varies a LOT by area.

    Long time watcher first time posting. Like the way you present your material so keep it coming as I will also be following your paver patio videos as well.
    Replacing a rotting timber retaining wall with cinder blocks, core fill with concrete and rebar, and geogrid every two blocks up. Compacted 3/4 crushed concrete will be used for the base on top of compacted soil. Wall is 32ft. long by 3ft-4ft tall and has a wooden picket fence that is currently behind the wall about 4ft. On the other side of the fence is my neighbors shed at the shortest part of the wall 1ft-2ft tall and the other end is a small foot path leading to a concrete pad 5ft by 10ft. Corrugated drainage pipe is going to be ran behind the wall to hopefully catch the water from the drainage problem that we are having, same 3/4 crushed concrete all around the pipe, and grade it to flow to the street. I know this is not a huge project, but wanted your thoughts as this my first time building a retaining wall. Also, would like to get closer to the fence to gain a bit more space in the backyard, but don’t believe the geogrid requirements would be met. Don’t even know if they would be met as they are currently.
    Look forward to thoughts on the matter.
    Thank you in advance.

    I am learning so much from your videos. I am about to begin a lake shoreline sea wall on my own property and build it myself. The lake is low this summer so it is a perfect time to build the wall. The soil is a mixture of clay and sand. Someone has suggested using 6 inches thick concrete in the bottom of a 2ft x 2ft ditch as a foundation making sure it is perfectly level. The distributor suggested a road base or granular base. I haven't seen any of your videos using concrete as a base so I want to be sure of what to use. The wall is only going to be 3ft high and be stair-stepped down to nothing. Again your videos are great!

    I have a small local gym that hired one of their friends that workout there to install a retaining wall and artificial turf. The wall is about 3 feet high. Fine limestone was used as base. I wish I could upload photos in the comments because it looks horrible. All wavy up and down, front to back. Now the guy is digging the dirt out to install the artificial turf. I want to go say something to the owner of the gym or the owner/friend of the company that's doing the job. I was taught to install crushed limestone/crusher run is what we call it here in my area. Taught to install anywhere from 7-12 inches compacted stone for the base of a wall. Anywhere from 6-12 inches of base past the front and back of the wall for best support. Then for the artificial turf, I was taught to install about 2-4 inches of crushed limestone for the best drainage. Always did more than what is recommended. I just feel like I need to go say something and point out what is wrong and what needs to be done to fix it. What would you all do?

    Hi there! Perhaps this will be covered in the next video, but what is the final height of this wall? I ask because I noticed that the depth of the geogrid you are laying is not that far - I remember you referencing a 2 (geogrid) to 1 (wall height) ratio in a previous video and just wanted to clarify - perhaps due to this being under 4 feet this is not necessary?

  • @WeTheMasons

    I'm guessing the drain pipes were connected to the downspouts from the gutters of the house, am I correct? If that is the case if the front yard did not slope towards the wall would you have still installed drain pipes? If not how many feet from the water source (houses roof) would you recommend not having to install drain pipes if the land was level?
    Fantastic video! I think if anybody from your area watches your video they'd definitely want to hire your company. The reaction towards the guy who put the frog in your face was hilarious! Thanks for the content in all respects.

    • @Dirtmonkey

      Yeah- but I don't like using a base we can't modify. if an adjustment needs to be made to account for excess geogrid affecting the level of the blocks, or a step up changes- its tough. yes it might be faster but I like the ability to make changes on the fly.

    When you backfill the first sections with #57 gravels, do you pack them down like the soil after the gravel or do you just fill them without packing? Thank you.

    What brand is that plate compactor. We have the small one from harbor freight and it always gets stuck on damp soil. Looks like the one you have works well

    Hello, questions for you. What will be the harm if you had tied the downspout pipe into the pipe behind the wall? Also can contract's fabric be used to separate my gravel from the soil when building a wall.

    Great video from DMU (Dirt Monkey University). I’m interested in the drainage of the walls. What types of piping? When and what type of filter cloth for the pipes?
    What type of stone ?

    Hey Stan, just bought a house and need to widen my driveway by about 12'. Was going to just use gravel for the time being and compact it down nice. I would dig out the yard a bit, build a mini wall, and have a varying depth of 6"-12", what type of gravel or stone do I need?? Any comment at all would be appreciated, Thanks!!

    I am eager to see the basing video but I hope it includes more about site prep and the various methods you use to achieve a level base, Hopefully a good review on a Transit level?

    What's the likelihood of the slope in front of the wall sliding shifting from the work you guys have done to it? Looks relatively steep, and now a wall is "cut into it". How do you assure the lower half of the hill in front of the wall really stays in place?

    Can you explain why you don’t use filter fabric around your drainage material

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  3 года назад +1

      it can cretae hydrostatic hotspots or clogging. which can lead to micro burst and problems.

    Love your videos. Building a 100ft wall myself right now. It’s going to be less than 4ft tall. Hoping to understand from you whether I have to backfill with a different soil than clay behind my wash 57 stone. Any help you can provide will be great. I’m a homeowner and doing this on my own so I want to do it right. I live in Ohio, so I’m dealing with clay

    Also, I believe from the few of your video, you stated a well build drainage would not need a drain tile, if the water is coming out of drain tile, there means something is wrong. From that statement, my question comes, if I lay a smooth thick plastic sheet or pack in with red clay right at the bottom of the gravel with adequate sloping for drainage. Do I still need drain tile? Thank you.

    Question for you? directly behind the wall it looks likes and layer of drain rock, then geogrid then dirt again? Confused on how much drain rock vs. dirt is behind the wall?

  • @MathCuriousity
    @MathCuriousity Год назад

    Quick question: why at 13:48 are you dumping dirt behind the stones instead of the 3/4th drain rock stuff ive seen you use? Now wont there be an issue with drainage since you just put dirt there?

  • @PNWLiving1725
    @PNWLiving1725 2 года назад

    Did you compact the very first layer of rocks under everything. The base. What kind of filler rocks did you use again?

  • @MrMzr-er7kb

    How far back are you digging? The higher the wall, the further back you have to dig? Also, looked like the lifts were topsoil type material, is that Ideal, or the need to blend with the local soil?

    • @bobojr456
      @bobojr456 3 года назад

      1 ft backfill for under 4 ft walls with no load bearing expectations. Over 4ft and/or load bearing you will want far more and use of geogrid.

    • @Dirtmonkey

      for walls its 6" of base unless a soil correction is needed.

    Is the process much different when installing a retaining wall on an unlevel surface or slope? Ie: sloping from left to right and front to back?

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  3 года назад

      this is both. It slopes side to side and front to back. We have leveled the trench for the footing as much as possible but when you watch the basing process in the next video. you will see how meticuloausly we have to account for the level.

    I see you used a perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric. I thought the drainage stone around these pipes is important to keep the voids between them so they work along with the pipe to quickly and easily remove Walter from behind the wall. Without wrapping the clean stone in fabric won’t they eventually plug up and then ultimately plug the filter fabric around the perforated pipe and there making that system no longer effective at removing water? I know the soil type around it makes a difference but perhaps you could go into even more painstakingly detail about when you donor don’t use fabric around the drainage stone would be helpful. I have heard you say that in some of your Boulder wall videos, Sandy yes use it and clay not to but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around clay eventually plugging Everything up? I value your opinions and direction. Can you clear it up more?

  • @georgefloyd7819
    @georgefloyd7819 3 года назад

    Another question about filter fabric. Why no filter fabric between the drainage stone and the native soil? Wouldn’t the drainage stone eventually fill up with fines?
