I always thought the drums were his heartbeat picking up from the anxiety rather than the turning of his mind. As someone with pretty severe anxiety, I've heard those drums in my own chest before, so when he starts to approach someone to potentially speak the drums speed up to mimic his anxiety/heartbeat speeding up too.

this song represents anxiety so well - the bridge about falling in a forest that gets faster and faster and you see him get more anxious and anxious - that is what anxiety feels like. and Ben sings it so well.

There is a video of Ben performing For Forever on the late show. Not only does he sing it perfectly, he acts it with the characters tics and movements while performing it. That was the performance of his that made me a major fan.

  • @ALightInTheForest

Not only does Ben personify the character (body language, gestures, eyes, for example), he personifies the character through the music...and the music and lyrics are perfection. You talked about the chord progression - I think that's key as the action and momentum build....just gorgeous!

I’m always so amazed with these performers breath control. Not only can they sing the part, but they run all over the stage and contort their bodies! Not only that but they have to look completely normal while doing it.

Good analysis. Keep in mind, the Tony Awards culminates in over a month of intense personal appearances, interviews, lunches, in addition to an 8 shows a week. The Tony weekend is filled with rehearsal on Saturday morning, then 2 shows on Saturday, Tony dress rehearsal on Sunday morning, go do a matinee (8th show of the week) and then rush back to Radio City for the awards show...it's as if you are running the NYC marathon. The stage at Radio City Music Hall is triple the size of even the largest Broadway house, let alone the Music Box Theater where DEH performs...Zoe being off on the exit for Evan to follow here in this performance would make that understandable.

This performance made me go to Broadway for the first time in 30 years. I has to see THIS performance. I knew it was special. Note that he was on vocal rest in the days leading up to this. Some other aspects of the acting I love are the sharp inhalations he does between the opening lines. Such an anxious thing. Notice that he never stands still...he is shifting his weight throughout the song (and the show). I’ve seen 4 Evans...(including Ben)
and no one else picked up these things. I find in Lacamoire’s work that the drum isn’t so much what is going on in the head, but a heartbeat. I notice it especially in “Dissapear”.

I love how he starts off all timid and then he just goes for it in the second verse. Its great for the character! It starts off timid and then he realizes "if you don't know how to handle life, then you are screwed!" Its such a great moment for him. It shows that his character knows he is different and not like the others. Its great songwritting and vocal skills. Amazing! Gah!

I so wish I had the music background to fully appreciate what you do here, but I learn a lot regardless. I am student of musical theater performances via this media, going back years. I love this art form. I am trying to think of a better combination of acting, character development and singing in any single performance that I have seen among literally hundreds. Can't think of one. Nobody does this better and darn few did this as well in decades and decades. Ben Platt as Evan is tier one standing among the very great.

Loved this reaction! Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favorite musicals, and I really enjoy this performance in particular. I would love to hear your opinion on Andrew Barth Feldman who played Evan on Broadway while he was still in high school which was very interesting considering he was actually the age Evan is supposed to be. I think Andrew's performance is my favorite next to Ben Platt's as he really brought a new perspective to the character, and of course he also has an amazing voice (in my armature opinion.)

I’m a new subscriber today and just watched all your videos and this is the format I like the most - just breaking things down a little more directly and frequently. I have a major pet peeve with reaction videos that just let half a video play before saying anything - folks, your content is just us watching you watch something! Marc, your pieces are enjoyable because of the expertise you lend; anyone saying you stop too much should just go to the source material directly, if they want to watch it all the way through! Keep cranking these out; I hope they’re as fun for you to make as they are for us to watch.

me as an alto singing this song: I can' round of those words and do you know the feeling of almost going to low? well I feel that with this song, but it's still fun to sing

Love for you to react to more lea, in miss Saigon. I’d love an analysis because hardly any music coach’s do them due to them being slighter older videos!

Marc, I cannot thank you enough for the content you’re putting out, I was really needing this. Loving the videos keep up the good work! I suggested falsettos before, but since you actually talk a lot about the acting part and not only the vocal aspect of a performance I’d love to see you compare and comment on Raul’s and NPH’s renditions of Being Alive, from Company. 💛

Alex Lacamoire arranged the music for both Wicked and Dear Evan Hansen which he also orchestrated. The same guy that orchestrated and arranged Hamilton. Which might be why you get some wicked vibes in the beginning of the song.

Can you make a video about crying on Broadway?? I heard you shouldn't cry when singing, but I've seen it in a few shows.

Anyone else notice how he raises his leg every time he hits a high note? for example at "wa-VING through a window" 9:27 and again at 12:42 - was wondering if thats another technique to hit highs. Thanks for the great analysis and breakdown, appreciate it!

It is. I forget where I saw him discussing it..but it is a technique.

Someone else pointed that out to me as well, I'm sorry that I didnt catch it. I'll have to do some research and see if its a legit technique.
