Virus evolution by antibodies + BA 2 Omicron - COVID-19 vaccines update 40

  • How does the virus evolve inside an infected person - we commence this story with a new demonstration in a vaccinated patient, and relapse to a well-documented history in COVID-19 patients, and how antibodies can be contributing to such viral evolution. This also leads us to a hypothesis as to why evolving variants might show up in wastewater prior to taking over a population. We conclude with how the BA2 variant of the Omicron is different from the BA1 variant, demonstrating continuous uninterrupted evolution of the virus.

Cross reactive T cells are a serum phenomenon and have very little or nothing to do with viral loads which are measured in the upper respiratory tract. Only respiratory tract viral loads are relevant as a driver of infections. T cell cross reactivity is a barrier to internal progression of disease but internal progression does not contribute to infectious pressure except inasmuch as respiratory viral load persists.

Another pathway related to ADE is governed by Th2 immunopathology, in which a defective T-cell response initiates an allergic inflammation reaction. A second pathway is based on the development of faulty antibodies that form immune complexes, which then activate the complement system a consequently damage the airways. These pathways are also potential risks for SARS-CoV-2

Not necessarily, as the pressure is now coming from all antibodies, which can also include those post natural infection. Vaccinal antibodies are focused on the spike though, but other factors can be at play. Right now it looks to me like the virus is just amplifying its own evolution when it has become this infectious, because by infecting so many people, it results in enormous antibody pressure on it. It could seem like self feeding loop

    • @Merogenomics

In terms of variants identification, that's easy. That is done through decoding the genetic code of the virus. You don't even need to isolate the virus from a sample to get to that. This is thanks to rapid sequencing technologies available. This is also why we can track the evolution of this virus live to such incredible detail (or any pathogen or organism for that matter). As mentioning in this video, we can now even track how a pathogen is evolving directly inside an infected person. In terms of your other questions, it really depends on the definition of "isolation"

Antibodies are present whether naturally produced or pre-created by vaccines. What antibodies are where, i.e. where are they clustered? What antibodies are in the gut? Waste water monitoring seems like a sensible precaution, but what better public health monitoring can be done? Routine sampling at hospitals, doctors surgeries, where else?

Well, that is only if we used humans as a repository of movies in a form of DNA :D Instead, think of cells in a culture, which have enough genetic material to survive and propagate, but can still also retain extra DNA which could store information of interest to us. So each cell type dedicated to a specific move for example :) We can decide what that code could look like and what it means, and then stick it in the cell genome!

@@Portia620 the question occurred to me when I looked at a family tree where longevity extended back a few generations, even with a life we would consider difficult ( low animal protein intake and what we would now be considered intense physical activity) but otherwise a not particularly healthy life style or even health. . The little information I had led me to believe there was something more involved and I wondered if anyone knew of any studies concerning this, whether any DNA studies has been made. This family had an intensive social life which may have boasted their immune systems. As you said, the field is so vast ! It seems like a good idea to go to basics (DNA) to try and find out, hence my question.

There are many evolutionary pressures in action at the same time. Anything that attacks the virus existence is a potential evolutionary pressure. That list of what affects the well being of the virus is quite large and antibodies is just one of many.

My parents and myself took 3 weeks to get better, and still have a few remaining "Long" symptoms. None of us had a jab. It was scary, honestly thought at least one of us would end up in hospital. Thankfully we didn't though. But I can't imagine getting it again and going through that. It was one of the worst experiences.
