Have to say, never thought I'd be looking at a full video of basically just a trail drive but I fully enjoyed it! Love Jeep too so... 😊 Good stuff!
More relaxing episodes like this, please.
Loved the episode! I definitely need to do this trail! Merry Christmas Ryan and team!
Great video. That Compass has seen more off-road miles in its first 3000 miles, than most will ever travel. Bravo.
Wow that canyon drive was amazing. Never seen a road like that before.
Always appreciate your videos - not just simple car reviews, but “real life” experiences to prove it. “Driving Sports” indeed!
Absolutely love my 2018 Jeep Compass 4x4. I have taken it on so many SoCal off-road trails and the four-wheel-drive system combined with 29” Perrelli AT+ tires have never let me down. I’ve gotten a lot of desert pinstripes though lol😀
Will you be doing long term reviews on the vehicles you purchased for the show? The 4runner, Maverick and the Jeep. I'm curious to see how long the average new car goes without major faults or repairs.
It is a FIAT after all my family and friends had 2 renegades had engine and transmission issues at 70k miles and yes we maintain them well lol
The order of reliability from best to worst is exactly in the order you named them
This!
@@northerntoyota7584 no it’s not.
@@darthtyranus7683 “all my family and friends had 2 renegades”.. huh? Plenty of renegades and fiats themselves with over 200k on the clock original trans and engine. Your “friends” change they’re oil every 20k miles.
Another great video. Can't wait to try the Titus Canyon adventure when we get out Outback Wilderness
Road trip exploration videos that combine a review of the vehicle's performance are such a nice mix. Thanks for showing this adventure!
Beautiful landscape
So cool! Can't wait to do this trail in my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk.
“Boy this place would be perfect for an ambush” killed me
Beautiful review n video on Jeep Compass....i just loved it
I plan on getting an Outback just so I can do trails like this. Love your videos.
That place looks amazing. Thanks for sharing the location!
I've been meaning to take out my SR5 for a nice little adventure nothing crazy and this seems to fit the bill. Excellent video!
Your videos helped influence me buy this exact make/model/year back in March 2022. So far 15,000 miles im very pleased everything from the interior to its everyday road driving ability. Its made navigating some of the worst winter days in Michigan seem effortless with its snow mode.
We rode our gravel bikes on this road in November. What a sick ride!!!
Titus Canyon is one of my favorite off-road experiences...there is nothing like it and how incredible it is. I did it in my F-250 and it handled it perfectly; it's a trail that needs high clearance rather than 4WD
This is cool. New place to put on my list to take my Wilderness Forester to.
"This road is so smooth! Oh sh*te!!!!" lol
Thanks for the "ride" through the canyon. Incredible. Also thanks for the information, I am seriously considering purchasing
You’re right near where I grew up. Thank goodness I ended up being stationed in San Diego as my last tour of duty cuz growing up that heat was atrocious! Lol
Merry Chistmas Ryan and Team! Another great video with awesome sceneries and gorgeous pictures!
So amazing!!!
Beautiful drive
I have really enjoyed this trip (video) congratulations I love your channel
An amazing trip, would love to have done that. I sure like my 2020 compass trailhawk. More videos like this, ease. Enjoy, stay safe.
Great video!!
Yes the powertrain is such a big oversight on Jeep's part that it is a deal breaker for me. The powertrain is really that bad!
It’s class competitive with the best selling rav 4
I own a 2020 Compass Sport, and after it passed 7K miles, the engine really opened up with better acceleration and improved efficiency (reliable 32 MPG on flat highway). It has sufficient passing ability, and overall nothing to complain about. All it needs is oil changes every 4K miles to keep the oil from getting dirty; unclean oil will ruin the oil actuated VVT by 70K miles, but with proper maintenance, these 2.4L Tigershark engines are good for 200K miles.
COOL SHIRT!! Merry Christmas!
I had 2019 Compass Trailhawk. Great little Jeep, explored Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree, etc. Did great. I had the Toyo Open Country AT3’s in 225/65/17 and the tires really elevated it’s performance. But my trip from Humboldt CA to near San Diego made me realize just how gutless it truly was. With the slightly bigger tires and all our gear, it just struggled so hard in the altitude and faster highway sections. I traded it in and actually made $1000 because of trade in values right now. I upgraded to a slightly older but low mileage 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. No comparison. It’s 1000x better. And the funny thing is that I averaged 22 mpg in the compass mixed, now I’m seeing 18-20 in the GC, and I’m on true 32 inch Toyo AT3’s. So yeah, the compass is a cool rig, but it NEEDS a better engine! Thanks for the video.
I don't know. I own a 2020 Compass Sport FWD, and the engine feel good to me, especially after 7K miles - I felt the engine really started to rev better and provide better MPG at least on the highway. Passing power is sufficient, and I can honestly say I went from feeling underwhelmed by this engine at first to really liking it over time. Maybe it's because the Sport trim is almost 500 pounds lighter than the Trailhawk trim.
"OH! That was a rock I didn't see." Me either. Any of them. Are you sure this Trailhawk suspension doesn't need more travel and/or compliance? Enjoy the holidays, Ryan.
Great video Ryan!
I lol'd at the comedic timing of 16:40
Real life test...professional review...loved it...From Mumbai India
This journey is a great inspiration. I should also do this.
Beautiful 🤩
Hello from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 I love your videos
Would love to see this compared to the bronco sport Badlands on your off road test track. Great purchase. Can't wait to see more.
Compass trailhawks are actually pretty awesome. Only downside I noticed was build quality in the interior but this new generation is looking way better
Beautiful area. So peaceful. We don't have that here. 😭
this is where the Jeep Compass belongs! be safe out there.
Cool..Cool...Cool!!!!
I have to try that.
I want to go death valley now! Reminds me of Anza Borrego CA beautiful place
Nice video :). I bought a 21’ Cherokee Latitude lux (though 2WD an with the 3.2l V6) a few months ago. It was not at all the car I was looking for…I was looking at the Tiguan and the Tucson Hybrid but they just weren’t available in the trim/model’s I wanted AND were 3-5k over MSRP. Was getting frustrated in my search and fell over the Jeep at 3k under MSRP (and it really was when I got to the dealer and no other bs), test drove it and bought it the same day. Also a lower trim than I was looking for but checked enough of the boxes of things I wanted. Have been very happy so far.
I love going to DV. Have been there on several trips on my Triumph T120 with a motorcycle group (Japanese vintage and SoCal Norton clubs), though I have skipped Titus Cyn when the adventure bikes in the group have gone that route… Would my 2WD Cherokee be ok on Titus Cyn (assuming no rain/recent rain and good general weather and road conditions) or would I be pushing my luck? When I have had this one a few years I will probably trade it in on a higher trim 4WD version.
Jersey potholes you ain’t kidding pal 😂 been here most of my life….. also was a stretch of time where my mom got a few flat tires from driving over nails in like a few years….
"I feel like I'm going to be attacked by sand people or Jawas." LMAO!!! Ohh man!!! That brings me back to the late 70s, and my parents taking us kids to the movie theater to watch "Star Wars!!!"
Nice video. I think this is the appropriate level of soft road that CUVs should be able to handle, provided you have decent all terrains to help avoid a puncture, and a fullsize spare. A car could likely handle this, but would be a little more worrisome and should go slower, plus you can't really find all terrains for them
I did this in a slightly lowered classic impreza and the first part was incredibly slow. The middle part I had to really watch my line and I still scraped twice. The third part with the slot canyon was amazing.
Also, this is a one way road.
We saw a camry do it. So low to the ground.
It looks really straightforward.
im taking my fj there for sure
wow, was just there in my tacoma 2 weeks ago. Was a great trail, loved the ghost town.
Ryan I swear, your vids give me agita! However...I. Can't. Stop. Watching. Them. 😀 Thanks for saying the trail is Westbound only, maybe include that nugget earlier in the video. It will allow us space to fret over something else. LOL! #CityDriverOnly (Side Note: Awesome video quality, the angles captured were first class.)
This would have been really fun to see in your Mav too
A little bit more about the suspension work on washboard, handling, speed, noise level, interior rattling would be nice to hear too during such kind of road trip reviews. How good are the headlights in the dark as well. Anyway a very pleasing video, reminds me of the places nearby Almaty, Qazaqstan
I like the Compass, specially because I can’t afford a Grand Cherokee. Im hoping to learn more about the reliability with your videos!🙏
Merry Christmas Ryan, from Ethiopia .
what was your speed with the washboard? Did speed help?
RE bottom of the canyon - yeah, somehow thinking you might like to spend a bit more time in NM. Those are the roads I was mentioning.
Glad you showed the Jeep on these types of roads.
I really hope they do more with this platform to compete better with the badlands bronco sport
Rocks really have it out for ya lately.
wow i didn't know this road existed, can't wait to go one day. will you be reviewing the ford explorer timberline any time soon?
Soon as they can get us one.
Love the Spanish guitar, suits the desolate, picturesque drive perfectly.
Hi just wondering what those “Thud” sounds were? Is it large rocks hitting the underbody or the car hitting the bump stops or just the luggage inside the car?
Also Happy Holidays !!
Granted it's not the hot season, but 2 liters really isn't that much water. I grab a gallon or 2 or from the supermarket and throw them in the back when we go on anything longer than a day trip.
Excellent content! Maybe you should be a tour guide?!?
The compass has a adaptive suspension... well kind of. It’s a “frequency selective dampening “ suspension with a off road tune. So it should be excellent over washboard while it adapts to the bumps. Made me kind of sad you aired down I was interested in seeing how it would do. Chrysler also uses a version of it on the dart GT it’s a adaptive suspension with a sport tune. The Fiat 500L has a Koni branded version. Fun fact Ferrari uses a shock from koni that’s frequency dampened as well.
Do you think there’s anything on this trail that required the off-road features of the compass? Could I do it in a RAV4? I didn’t see any glaring obstacles so far in the video, but I’m curious.
RAV4 would be great. Just make sure you have a good spare if you catch a random rock.
Can u give us a review of this trailhawk on city roads / daily commute
Ryan we’re dying for you to put it on a lift and show us the underside after hitting all those rocks!
Maybe I missed it, but I'd love to see a video like this using the Ford Maverick. Especially the hybrid model as I don't see a lot of videos with it and it's definitely the more popular model.
Whenever you reference difficulty levels of trails where are you pulling that data from?
Do you think the Kia Seltos would be able to handle this road? I’m planning a trip out to California in October and would love to come visit this spot! Also is there any spots with soft sand or is it mostly solid ground? I got myself stuck in sand before and that wasn’t fun…
The Kia will do fine. The suspension will be on the stepside. And definitely watch for any errant rocks. But if you take it slow you’ll be fine.
Would an AWD HRV be a more reliable option for "mild adventures" like this one? Would an HRV be able to do the previous video climbing a mountain trail?
Would love to get 200k miles over 10 years on the next vehicle. Not sure if the smaller jeeps (see: fiats) are up to the task.
The HRVs AWD is poor by comparison. Not good enough for the Tahoe climb. Also HRV has street car ground clearance. The underside would be thrashed.
Great vid.
Looks like u could take a 2wd Grand Cherokee on that road and get by, no?
Great drive! Other than cost, any reason for not choosing a Cherokee with the 2.0L turbo?
It just hasn't been updated in a long time. When it gets updated, we might buy one.
What is the better vehicle ford bronco sport or this Jeep Compass?
Are you guys also having the issue with the Uconnect lowering the volume, loosing the audio and doing funky stuff? I understand there should be an over the air update but wondering how many people have this issue? Other than stereo everything else is great
In Brazil, we have the version gasoline with a 1.3 turbo 177 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, with acelerations 0-62 in 9.3 secons. Hes a much faster vehicle, but is only FWD. For a 4WD, we have a diesel with 167 hp and 260 bl-ft of torque, more compatible with off road.
Shocks/struts, whatever it has, held up on the washboard?
The Garmin Inreach is a great product. My wife and I have had one for several years. About tires and rims. I believe that you cannot use the wheel nuts for alloy rim on the spare with a steel rims. My 20 Tundra had a tire with a defect and I told the dealer to put on the spare as a temporary solution until a replacement came for my alloy rim. They put wheel nuts on for a steel rim. I had never thought about that. Now, I have five nuts in a bag 🎒 in my truck if I need to use the spare.
That’s a great point. I need to check on that.
@@drivingsports 👍...Merry Christmas Ryan.
Will there be a review of the 2023 compass?
Jeeze, I'm just curious how many weeks out of the year you're away from home base. Seems like a lot of adventures in your job.
According to my hotel rewards account I spent 136 nights on the road this year. That’s not counting all the hotels outside of network. So probably close to 180.
@@drivingsports thank you for your professional and quality content and entertainment!
You should try the 1999 explorer vs the new explorer.id telling the older explorers are better
@@drivingsports Thank you for telling us that so I can tell my wife who thinks 60 nights a year is a lot!
Awesome video. I have really silly question = at 20:28 (or around there) if something happens to your car and you get stuck, do you call AAA? Or what's the plan in case you get stuck (do you have someone following you)?
I have a satellite communicator. AAA probably wouldn’t come out that far, but someone in my office would call around and get a truck to rescue me.
@@drivingsports haha love it my man. Getting ny ride (same one today) and therr is a massive snow strom coming to Cleveland tonight.
After watching you go up that steep hill in a foot of snow - guess who is showing up to work tomorrow. That is righ lol!!! Thanks for awesome videos in this jeep compass.
I saw someone run that route with a nissan altima with GA tags they made it through somehow
You know what they say: "The best off-road vehicle is a rental."
Probably a European driving the rental Altima. I had an Italian Grandmother as a kid. She would take me there in the summers often. Her family owned an olive farm. I saw people drive small fiats and golfs down dirt roads that an average American would think they needed a Raptor / TRX to get down. Of course this was in the 1990’s, when even Camaros and sports cars had wider sidewall tires (and in some cases ground clearance) than most of the SUVs we have that now ride on 19, 20, and 21’s.
Loved the video... curious would a stock 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6r with A.T tires be able to do the route?
Yup, that would be a great drive.
@@drivingsports My concern is, I have no Body Armour... would you think I have to have it??
@@augiewolff2754 Not likely an issue. If you take it easy and keep your eyes open you should be good.
Lol with ease
What do you do when you encounter someone coming the other way and you're on one of those narrow sections that are like a ledge on the steep hillside?
It’s a one-way road.
@@drivingsports Aha! Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Awesome location - how were you able to fly a drone as this entire area is inside the National Park where drones are banned.
Video production trick: All the drone shots were done outside the park no-fly zone. (Not actually in Death Valley, but close enough to have similar terrain.)
@@drivingsports Many thanks - the magic of TV has no ends :-) Love your work and looking forward to more in 2022!
Would hate to have a vehicle come the other way. Those are some narrow roads and blind turns
Let's be honest, any SUV can do this road, no need for the trailhawk in particular. That's the roads I like, perfect for easy family trip.
Yep. As I said in the video.
We rode this on our bikes in November
How long did it take to drive through the canyons?
I spent a few hours. Filming takes 3X longer than normal.
Is deflating the tires necessary if you go a little slower?
No. Road was easy. Only deflate if the rocks are sharp or you need more grip.
@@drivingsports my Pilot has 21 inch relatively low profile (stock). I'm about to go there and attempt it. Wondering if my wheels will be a problem.
@@CaliSteve169 If you go slow and keep an eye out for the larger rocks you should be fine.
I have a question and this goes for anyone reading this. I am a college student looking to get a 4x4 Midsize Truck or SUV. Currently I have a 2015 Dodge Dart that I’m looking to trade in. Just wanted to get different opinions. I also live in the PNW
Subaru
this is a great video, love your presentation, if you really purchased this vehicle it be great to get a follow up video in a year or 2 on how well it holds up.
How fast can you drive in 4wheel drive in these?
It's all-wheel drive. No limit on speed since it will just disconnect power to the back if it needs/wants to.
Do you have the map of that trail
That canyon looks like you'll see a gang of cowboys on horses throwing up dust as Indians rain arrows down at them from the top of the canyon.
Every time he says how great the road is, he hits a bump?!
"please jeep more power"..... Honest question, how many time did you actually need more power on this trip?
Every time there was a truck in front of me doing 50 in a 75. Which was pretty regular. But 3,600-mile road trips aren't the common use case.
Man just the idea of being alone all the way down in such a remote place gives me the shivers !!
I saw the rock
