- An unexpected visit from legendary pedal steel player Danny Dugmore…as well as a quick cameo from Bryan Sutton and Jerry Roe
Danny has been credited on records in the past under the alias “Mud Ogre” which of course is a re-arrangement of the letters in his last name
As you can clearly see, one of the sweetest dudes to ever put in a set of headphones…he is a dear cherished friend.
He is absolutely ordained in this town…EVERYONE loves Danny, and if you ever heard someone talking shit on him, you would immediately know that person is a total asshole.
I feel like Bryan Sutton is one of the main protagonists in the Homeskoolin' show. He deserves a nomination for best supporting actor.
I started going through credits on modern country records after I became a Homeskooler, and Bryan is on EVERYTHING 😂
Thanks Tom, that was awesome. Fly on the wall brilliance from Danny and Bryan,
This is my favorite Homschoolin' episode! Awesome!!
Gold medal for this interview ... priceless
Hey Tom, new guitarist, but an old guy! Big fan of Rick’s show and saw you and Guthrie being interviewed. Such fun freakin dudes! I loved your playing together, so I bought your album. Good luck. I’m going to try and make it to one of your live shows in Nashville. Cheers!!! BTW… your critiques definitely apply to us new guys!
I could listen to Danny tell stories all day. Thanks Uncle Larry.
Shout out to the Flying Burrito Brothers! Good shit!
Used to catch Walk the West, precursor to the Flying Burrito Brothers, in Bowling Green, KY at Picasso’s in the early 80’s. Great times in my youth.
The bolt on neck was intended to be replaced when it got worn out or broken. Adjustment of the truss rod was intended to be done during the initial set up. Well at least that is the story someone told me
Great video Tom, thank you!
Kind Woman! Jesus balls, that’s a great track.
Danny's ear-to-ear smile during the playing of that classic solo was so heartwarming. You can see how proud he is, and appreciative of the opportunity to share.
Great episode.
Yes - I noticed that too. It was just fabulous.
He was so happy you could see he was proud to have the young bucks honor him in that way. That was one of the sweetest things I've seen in a long time.
@@jamarwrightThat is one of Uncle Larry's superpowers. He is awesome at acknowledging, respecting and honoring those before him.
Love that about him, Guthrie, Jedd and so many of the Nashville crew.
Amen! 🙏
That moment literally moved me to tears. What a beautiful, beautiful thing to see.
Hey Tom , you and Guthrie showing up to support Jed at his gig was so cool. Jed’s such a killer song writer, player and singer.
Brother, what an honor to hear Dan's stories. What a sweet man with an amazing history. Thanks again, Tom.
28:26 after re-connecting to old drummer friend some years back we jammed making up stuff and standing almost over the flurry of drums i could lock in seeing exactly where the beat was going to land. Your notes are razor sharp with the beat, sounds awesome. i`m a big proponent of watching the drummer as you play.
Hey Tom, I’m not a guitar player, just a knuckle dragging Sasquatch-ion bass player, but I can’t stop watching your channel. Man, the way you hype all of the people you are around is pure hearted. All the people you introduce or talk about makes me go down the rabbit hole looking for things they have played on! Thanks for the great content and musicology lessons!
Amen
Who could possibly bad mouth Danny, what a total sweetheart, not to mention one of the creme-de-Le-creme of musicians. You are surrounded by so much love Tom. He is one of my pedal steel heroes. You really make my life better with this virtual journey with you, giving us a view into the life so many of us only dreamed of. Thank you.
Love hearing these kind of stories from the Old Skool cats.
Absolutely amazing to be able to even just sit in and listen to you legends talk for half hour. Super grateful for you to let us into your world like that Tom 🙏
Man, watching him Smile during the playing of the solo just warms my heart. Great video and stories Larry.
OMG and "flying in a slide player into nashville..." HAHAHAHA
Hey Tom , I read somewhere Leo put the truss rod at the other end of the neck to be different from Gibson and to protect himself from any possible patent infringement. Plus it supposedly strengthens the neck not having the cut out for the truss nut at the headstock.
you probably know this but stew Mac makes a great little tool for a tele truss rod, it’s not perfect but it helps.
Gibsons which I love have weak headstocks because of the truss rod nut which takes away a lot of real estate and of course the grain running away at that end. I like Eddie’s neck idea with the spoke-wheel at the heel.
Thank you man, that was a real treat - what a legend of a guy Danny is
Episodes like this make my whole week - so F’in cool to hear such great stories from Danny & Brian - and YOU, Uncle Larry!!! Pure Gold!!!!
Best string change ever!!!
I just love you man. Thanks for being such a kickass Tom Bukovac!
That's all I owned in the 80s and 90s were Fernandes guitars. When I could finally afford fenders I bought one and I quickly realized I was not missing anything. Love seeing the old Fernandes guitars.
I still have a Fernandes strat. It’s a boat anchor with a mahogany body. I changed the maple neck for a rosewood Warmoth, it’s never been the same. The maple is going back on as it rang like a bell.
In the 80s they were $250 a pop. So you could do what you wanted to them. Fun times
@@stringlocker Bought mine new in 87 for 210 English pounds. Still got the bill. 😉
@@nickjones3222 I wish I could say I still had anything. It all disappeared. Poof
Uncle Larry's going to make a lot of friends on RUclips if he keeps breaking out those old Japanese guitars.
BUk!!! That Dugmore solo is my favorite steel guitar moment of all time. I STILL get physical goosebumps every time I hear it. Thank you for getting Dan to talk about it!
I think this was is my favorite episode of Home Skoolin! I have always picked the brains of any senior player or worker I have the opportunity to be around. These people are walking encyclopedias that will not be in print forever. Like Mr. Dugmore, George Gruhn, Big Al Anderson, Greg/Bubba Sarley and one day, hopefully a long way off…the Session Man, Tom Bukovac alias: Uncle Larry. Thank you Tom for your efforts to document in audio and video these volumes of that musical walkin’ talkin’ Encyclopedias Musicania.
Dan was always bigger than life to me. Even better to see and hear that he is a solid guy who loves music. Thanks, Buk!
Loved this so much. I grew up on that California country and hearing all the names coming out of Dugmore's living memory was just such a privilege. Thanks Buk, really took me back to times when my big sis was in a band. She was 11 years older than me her bandmates were so into the flying burrito brothers.
What an awesome episode! Wonderful! You are in such a great company .
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
RUclips just sent me a video of you and Jedd maybe it was called bright blue sky. Fantastic!!!
The blue buyou story is amazing but scuffle in the back was hilarious looks like an awesome bunch to work with
Some seriously fucking good content today Uncle Larry. Thanks man.
I love those high ceilings! Great short video Tom!
Leo Fender was anti-tone control and Tone Wood. Legend says Leo made his first guitars out of MDF board.
Great stories. Thanks Tom
That was my all time favorite episode. Danny’s stories are hilarious. He’s so unassuming and then he’s dropping names like Linda Rondstadt and Waddy and Porcaro. What a life he must have led. He should write a book. Thanks, Tom for sharing your cool ass gig with us wannabes.
Electro Spanish Larry and Flat Top Jedd, can't wait for that album cover.
This was Great, Really Really Great
Thank You Tom
And Rusty was a dear friend, love him deeply, and it always does my heart good to hear stories about his influence on such great players as Dan.
That was great! Love hearing older musician stories! I am a drummer for over 30 years who just recently started taking guitar more seriously and playing guitar, it is a good thing to know what a drummer is doing. It also, hopefully has helped with my timing!
Stephen Stills enters the story..... Haha
love those old 70’s west coast stories… fuck kind woman is a sick track!!
Jed is a rockstar. Brilliant player and song writer. Thank you for supporting him. You taught me not to tie that luthier knot. Changed my life.
The boys monkeying around behind the vid.... 9:35 Priceless! Then you have Danny's grin when listening back to that magic.... 5:14 Damn, I love this channel...
Since pre-Covid, this channel has been my #1 source of both entertainment and learning... What a great bunch of dudes... aside from the legendary skillsets.. Larry's channel's the best thing going since sliced f'ing bread.
Parents and Storytellers need to be revered as much as you revere those who’ve helped you along the way. Ya’ll are the glue that’s holding the world together.
❤
Fascinating stuff. Love hearing the history of these great records direct from the guy who played on 'em!
Great playing with Jedd and Guthrie, wish I lived in Nashville but had the alternative pleasure of seeing 8 year old daughter smash the keyboard part in her school summer exhibition. So swings and roundabouts
Thanks UL, that made my day. The tumbleweeds on my calendar seem smaller right now
Man it must be so much fun to go to work and be surrounded by guys like Danny ... I then went to work and had to report to Bozo the clown... Love your stuff Tom.... Nice interview.
Ain't the truth.🤪😂🤣🤙
This has to be up there with some of the best episodes you’ve done! Walk-in, off the cuff conversations with some legends of the game. Well done, Uncle!
This was a treat of an episode! Thanks Larry!
Brilliant playing last night with Jedd Hughes! Loved it! Thanks 🙏 went straight to Band Camp to pick up the incredible album you produced for him (The Lost Tapes). What an amazing collection of songs and musicians and incredibly well produced! Thanks!
Gracias, to Danny, Bryan, Jerry, and Uncle Larry. Much appreciated!
Oh man! Danny Dugmore! Where can you get such amazing inside information like this! Thank you Tom! Priceless.
Thanks, Uncle Larry. Love the string change videos! Feels like I’m sitting there just listening in…. Really appreciate it!
This is one of the coolest rooms I've ever seen!
Wow!
Thanks Larry
😎 🍺
Of all people to get a guitar with the strings tied on with Luthiers knot, it would have to be Uncle Larry. I don't care if Joe Walsh taught you that, it is wrong!!!🤣Agree!! This got a big chuckle out me, just what I needed. And last bit of advice was a real gem - keep your mouth shut. Great behind the scenes video!!👍👍
Your shows are always entertaining to me. But there have been a few over the years that stand out to me, and this just instantly became one of them!! I think Lauren Watkins is going to he a big star. She writes great songs and sings them well. But having you and Joey Moi putting them in the right frame seals the deal. She is one of my favorite new artists! I have commented to my wife many times how much I like the pedal steel on Lauren’s songs. And now I know why! Those stories from Doug all come from my young days, and I loved all of those artists! We’ve been to Muscle Shoals to see the studio where Linda made her first recordings, with her band (the future Eagles) peeking in the side door, and pissing off Dave Hall (who was there the day we visited!). Anyway - thank you for a keeper of a Home Skoolin’ episode! Made my day!! 🥰👍
david hall the engineer?
Wow man this stuff is gold. The real history behind classic music
Amazing interview! You need to be on 60 Minutes. But seriously, glued to this interview. Love hearing from legends
I couldn’t like a video more than I like this one. The Tube needs a heart react. What a fantastic video. A living piece of history. What a cool man.
Man, I have loved this guy all my life and didn't even know it was him. He seems like a super sweet dude. Good times!
❤ What a sweet dude and absolute legend! This is one of my favourite episodes! Penta-Tommy, you are so natural at interviewing!❤❤❤
So true about the luthiers knot. Who decided that this was needed? I've never had a guitar go out of tune because of strings slipping.
Man. Thanks for sharing all these moments and stories. Blows my mind. But just another day for you. Truly thanks man.
Holy shit Lar that was one of the greatest videos ever Danny has great stories and tells them like no other. He should write a book. Thanks buddy keep on keepin on.
ya know, Tom, I've wondered that same thing about Leo. Why put the TRA in such an inopportune place? dig that studio...you can go to confession after the session!
That was a treat thanks uncle Larry
SUPER treat to see the legendary Dugmore! THANK you SO much! (Huzzah to Rusty Young! Saw Poco open for Stills y Young)
Re: Fender truss rod: These days I just buy a second pick guard, carved the divot in it, install "the wheel" (ala Ernie Ball) so that you don't need a propriety hex key or wrench and can adjust it with a bespoke nail, screwdriver or even guts of a good ball point pen...
As always BLESS thee for your dispatches...
This video is spectacular! What a great insight to classic times! Thanks Uncle Larry!
Wow a music treasure it's so important to get the underside of the makings. Big Thx uncle Larry
Thank you Tom for the excellent interview with Dan Dugmore. I’ve been a huge fan of his since the mid 70’s. One of the truly great ones. So down to earth as well.
One of my favorite Homeskoolin' sessions ever, and I've seen a ton of 'em! Love Danny and his stories are gold!
Danny Dugmore is a sweet cat. You are very fortunate to have the friends that you do. Awesome video Larry.
What a beautiful interview - trigger the memory and off Danny goes - with a smile all the way 😎
Linda had a good run of hits in the '70s with those oldies covers; I remember hearing them on the radio as a kid. Plus, they perked up the ears of my '50s teenage generation parents.
Absolutely incredible video….I did not want it to end! Thank you Mr B and of course Danny for those great stories!
That's why Leo was a genius. He was smart enough to ask incredible players to play his instruments and give feedback. And he took that feedback and worked on things.
That's part of why Leo was a genius. He was smart enough to know he couldn't do it all himself.
As a Luthier I can't agree more with the string locked on the tuners. Few of my customers can properly restring their guitars and it drives me crazy too.
Tom, Love these historic stories! Thank you so much for the channel and all you’ve given to the guitar world.
Larry! I totally agree that Strats need a tone control on the bridge pickup and funny enough, I just bought a Fender Vintage II Start (based on 1961) and much to my pleasant surprise, the lower tone control _is_ on the bridge pickup. The upper tone does middle and neck p/u.I am seriously considering having this done to my other Strats - It just makes sense. Ditto on putting the truss rod adjust on the headstock. That's my 2 cents
Waddy is my wife's favorite guitar player. I am not. Absolute alpha.
Yes!! Totally with you about that dumb luthiers knot!! So stupid. And the truss rod adjustment at the heal?! I avoid them at all costs. Haha.
Danny Dugmore: “On the second day of the recording, he comes to me and says, “Dan, I think you will like this. I went to RCA to get some papers and the president called me in his office, picked up these papers and he said, “Josh, it says here that you’re flying in a steel player to Nashville. That’s like flying a whore to Vegas!”
Tom Bukovac: “Sand to the beach.”
I've never enjoyed changing the strings on my guitar. Leave alone watching someone change the strings on theirs. But this? I could watch it over and over. After all, when was the last time one got to listen to the stories from the road from the guy who toured with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, and also played pedal steel on records for the likes of David Crosby, Don Henley, Dusty Springfield, Graham Nash, Jake Owen, Karla Bonoff, Kenny Loggins, Kenny Rogers, Kid Rock, Lauren Alaina, Lionel Richie, Mindy Smith, Olivia Newton-John, Randy Travis, Ronnie Milsap, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Sturgill Simpson, Tim McGraw, Warren Zevon, The Mountain Goats, John Prine, Wilson Phillips, Billy Dean, Matraca Berg and ZZ Top among others?
Great video, Uncle Larry. Probably one of your best!
Danny’s face at 28:55 when you say you owe him a lot! Beautiful
Yeah, but you should never have to adjust anything on a guitar if it's a "good" one. That's the way these screwtubers talk nowadays. Like, why would you be constantly adjusting your guitars set up? At that point, the conversation has to be over. How can you reason with someone like that? The scary part is, these clowns are out there preaching it as truth. Toy boys. Apparently, I've not reached this highest level of guitar luthiery yet? A guitar that doesn't need ANY adjustments, ever? Sure.
Hi Tom,
Looks like the bridge pickup has raised polepieces. Do you have a preference for flat or raised polepieces or just whatever is period correct for the guitar?
Thx
So I came up with an idea here for you. I think if you were to do say five shows and charge us $12 to $15 or whatever a show, I think we would be incredibly happy to pay the $75 or whatever dollars to have five different nights of your playing, since we can’t pull out 12 of your records yet!
You’re truly a blessed man Tom!! What great folks to call friends and have as mentors!! Thank so much for sharing with us!!
Uncle Larry, the biggest miss is 21 fret guitars. Drives me insane.
I’m a nerd just like you guys! I love talking about music. Drummers are the star of the show. As a bassist I wear a dw hat, get compliments all the time. People ask me are you a drummer and I say no I play bass but I try to think like a drummer. I as well watch more drummer videos too. Thomas Lang is my new watch. Just incredible!
Fuckin’ classic. These are lost tales you can’t get anywhere else. Thanks Tom
Hi Tom. I love your vids, especially the behind the scenes footage. All your vids are so good, but these are extra special to me. The fact the studio is in a church is icing on the cake. 😊🙏💚🎸
Couldn't agree more about the truss-rod/tone on a Strat bridge pickup thing! Although, I think the story oes that Leo didn't even want to put a truss rod in the neck on Fender guitars because he was convinced the maple would withstand anything - he could have been correct because those early 50's Fender necks are enormous, but luckily for us we didn't have to find out because he eventually added one...with the adjustment at the wrong end. I'm guessing his theory was something along the lines of 'it's easier to manufacture this way and players aren't ever going to need to adjust it anyway'. I have an old AVRI '52 Tele and I haven't touched the neck relief in 6 or 7 years, the neck is an absolute giant.
Man, trying to listen while you were tuning was a test from above. I failed and had to punch out, will try and come back tomorrow to finish it. Please sir no more tuning during story telling!
That escalated quickly! From stringing a quitar to just an absolute wealth of cool stories. Doesn't get any better than that.
Thanks for spotlighting Danny Dugmore, a world class player who most people never heard of! Great post!
What a great community!
Man that was cool but I can't get Blue Bayou out of my head.
Absolutely fantastic!!! Thanks for this Tom!!!
