      The biggest myth I would say is that any review that rates a product as the “most ergonomic” should be judging them on how many adjustable features it has
      Because to be really ergonomic, it needs to be all these different things, not just one way for all people
      So, just like you say, the most ergonomically tinting solution is to have the widest range of tenting options
      The most ergonomic keywell / flat solution would adjust to your hand size and preference
      The most ergonomic keyboard would be sculpted to the individual user
      When I see click bait reviews like that they make me sad for what people are missing out on. Because there have really never been this many ergonomic options for keyboards. But at the same time, there seem to be kind of a wild west, without a lot of very clear science behind what are, and are not the best practices, as this video points out.
      I remember seeing some articles that sort of pointed out that studies were funded by some keyboard manufacturers who had a vested interest
      It would be nice to see some stronger science

      Myth: the perfect desk height is 30 inches. As someone who just finished his first complete year at a 100% sedentary job I am REALLY questioning the 30” desk height because every chair, keyboard, and wrist rest are unique.
      But sit/stand desks are expensive!! (Many sit/stand desks go as low as 27 inches in height)

      Ortho? I have heard that it is great on split keyboards, but arguably even worse on non-split. Obviously, your product is not ortho, so your video may be biased, but I think there is certainly a market for your product, even if ortho is superior (people who want ergonomics but can't be bothered to learn ortho)

    As a kid, I fell off of my bike and sprained my wrist. Ever since, I'll get chronic pain if I strain that wrist too hard. Wrist pronation from typing on a normal keyboard for too long counts, so ErgonoMyth 3 is absolutely confirmed in my case. In fact, your dedicated and more robust tenting kit is why I bought the Raise instead of the Moonlander (that and I wanted a Defy, so I figured I'd get used to your tech before that finally released).

      Yup, I've been quite impressed with Dygma's videos. From providing updates on thought process behind the keyboard, useful information such as this about ergonomics, the beautiful backgrounds and subject, and the funny clips are fun to watch. I can't think of another product that does all that.
      Aaand... SO excited to get this keyboard. Not only do I want a keyboard that look fantastic, but I can see where the additional ergonomics beyond what I have currently with my Moonlander will definitely be welcome. I can type on a flat keyboard for as little as 30 minutes and it leaves my hands and wrists burning. (Not just old age, I've been this way since my late 20's and we won't discuss how long that has been. I spend a *lot* of time in front of a computer, and I clock in close to 100wpm, which equates to a lot of keystrokes! So yeah, the increased ergonomics are exciting. I think another that has not been mentioned is the slight curve in the keys dude to the Cherry profile. Right now my moonlander has a flat set of keys. From what I can see the Dygma has more of a curved approach (slight key well) due to the fact that not all keycaps are the same size as the others, from what I can tell. I'm on a laptop right now, btw.. and just writing this has made my wrist and hands burn.

    Context is king! I'm really looking forward to comparing the defy with my kinesis advantage 2, firsthand, for _my_ hands. I'm sure there will something(s) I like better about each. I suspect I'm going to miss the keywell, but I *do* find my fingers curl a little too much for the bottom row.
    Another area where context seriously matters: as a programmer, I need to type {}[]()~,.:+-*/\"_ more frequently than non-programmers, and I probably and use esc/meta/alt/cntl/shift/super chords more often too. I've heavily customized the symbol and special key mappings on my kenesis, and I've been playing in Bazecor ... but there's always a period before the new muscle memory is learned where it isn't yet clear how fast or ergonomic the mapping will be. I'm curious if _your_ software developers are sharing their bazecor configs. If so, what editors/IDEs/languages have they optimized for?

    Tenting means that you're fighting gravity to stop your arms from dropping the whole time. This also puts extra strain on muscles such as the flexor carpi ulnaris, abductor digiti minimi, and possibly other associated muscles around the elbow and the ulnal collateral ligament over time. Obviously there's a lack of empirical data, anyone who's carried too many shopping bags at once will tell you that sometimes the proof is in the pudding.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  Месяц назад

      Tenting keyboards, which elevate the center and slope towards the edges, aim to reduce strain by promoting a more neutral wrist position. This can alleviate pressure on muscles like the flexor carpi ulnaris and abductor digiti minimi. While empirical data may be limited, the concept aligns with ergonomic principles and evidence suggests it can improve comfort during typing. But as we say on the video, it always depends on if you use it correctly or not

    thank you for this! i feel like so much advice about ergonomics is in the format of simple rules without context, and the truth is that ergonomics is very much about context. one thing i'd like to see in a new video is the myth that ergonomic tools should hyperfocus on sustaining a single 'correct' position for hours, when we evolved to thrive on range of motion. split keyboards are great for this.

    Weird to say key wells are busted for the horizontal rotation, when the biggest impact i've had apart from keys being easier to reach, is the vertical rotation of the wrists. Key wells allow you do have a completely neutral wrist even when you lift your fingers to press different keys regardless of position

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  2 месяца назад

      We didn't mean to say that the keywell is not ergonomic. It's just that you have to consider each user's case, and maybe that position is not the best for some people. Of course, there will be other cases where the keywell is the best or even the only option 😊 So if the keywell works for you, keep using it! The important thing here is that you are comfortable 💪

    ErgonoMyth: You must sit up straight.
    The advice should be: Do not slouch forward.
    I love to lean back so that the back rest takes some load off my spine. When you lean back, positive keyboard tilt can become a benefit.
    I'm not sure I fully agree with the mentioned negatives of a keywell. A keywell brings keys closer together. Those with smaller hands may still need to stretch to reach function keys (if not moved to layers), but less so. Also, although the keyboard inevitably becomes thicker (all else equal), you may not need to sit higher if the halves are (significantly) tented. In the extreme case of 90° tenting (45° may already be enough), no difference in seating height would be required.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  9 месяцев назад +1

      Totally agree on your advice! Leaning back can be a way of sitting properly if you adjust your setup accordingly.
      And on the keywell, you have a point there, but it's a recurrent feeling among our small-hand testers with concave keywells. Maybe it's not real and only psycological though.

    • @FrankPloegman
      @FrankPloegman 9 месяцев назад

      @@DygmaLab Question for you: If an exact copy of the Defy were available except with a keywell that fit your hands, would you prefer that over a flat Defy from a purely ergonomic point of view?
      I have never used a keyboard with a keywell, but I expect the keywell would be more ergonomic/comfortable than flat.
      I'm going to mount my Defy to my chair so a slight increase in height is irrelevant. The latter is also true if you stand behind your desk.
      I understand the trade-offs between flat and keywell, and fully agree with Dygma's decision to choose flat.
      IMO the Defy is currently the best keyboard package for the majority (e.g. concerning wireless option, easy programmability, price, portability, design, finish, availability, customer service, etc.), but I still expect a keywell to have some ergonomic advantages, especially if you use the number row.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  9 месяцев назад +1

      @FrankPloegman no, because even though a key well can be more comfortable if you adjust properly to it, it's much less flexible. I like changing my position throughout the day: flat, tented, then reverse tilting while standing... or take my Defy on the train or to a coffee shop. That's more difficult with key well.

  • @davidgzmn12345

    I was a little peeved with myth one since, while sure, if your desk setup puts the keyboard above the level of your elbows the negative tilt won't make it ergonomic, any keyboard set above the level of your elbows will be equally not ergonomic making you put undue pressure on your wrists. The problem there is not the tilt of the keyboard but the elevation of your desk.
    A more fair test would be, with proper ergonomics otherwise, will the negative tilt be better for you?

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  6 месяцев назад

      If you adjust your setup accordingly, negative tilt will be better for you, no doubt about it 😅. Our point was that, if you don't, it can be detrimental.

    I just type with my hands at an angle on a regular keybard… i.e. my "home row" is approximately adfv njlå (å is the key right of p on a Norwegian keyboard), though I don't have my hand locked in one particular position anyway, I never learned some "proper" touch type technique; I just realised I could type without looking at the keybard after programming for several years. I also type a lot left handed whenever I'm doing something that requires a lot of mouse and only occasional typing. I can type fairly fast using only the left hand (though then I need to look at the keyboard to reach all the way over to p). But of course since I'm a programmer I don't actually type a lot continuously… programming is way more thinking and testing than typing.
    I've never actually had any strain injuries from working with a keyboard, but I have had carpal tunnel issues when gaming, mainly from pressing the wasd keys and the mouse too hard when I get excited; which is why I think the whole idea that the keyboard needs to be bent or chopped in half to improve ergonomics is rather weird. How does that have any effect on pressing too hard? Also I stopped using my fancy "gaming keyboard" with tall mechanical keys and started using the relatively flat rubber dome keyboard instead somehow the tall keys just made me press harder than the flatter low travel keys of a laptop or a flatter than model M rubber dome keyboard.

      Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience. For that kind of problems more than the keyboard being split, what will help you the most is a keyboard with negative tilt and having a small difference of height between where you rest your wrists and the highest point of your keyboard 😊

      The Naya Create folks showed, in their latest video that they did a prototype keywell version and learned a lot from it
      They said keywells needed to be fitted to your hand, so it was hard to mass produce? (And less portable)
      And they hinted about figuring out ways to make their custom sculpted keycaps so the fingers moved less distance than with a keywell?
      I look forward to their future videos talking about that (myths to bust?)

      We think the Glove80 is a pretty interesting keyboard, and although not as tall as other concave key well keyboards, it's still quite tall.
      And not everybody likes low profile switches that are not hot swappable. Which reaffirms the point of the video: it can be perfect for you, but it's not necessarily perfect for everybody.
      And that's ok. Having more options means there's a keyboard out there for each one of us that is perfect us 😊

    I'm pretty sure negative tilt is relative to the angle of the forearm, not the table. You want to be just slightly flexed from neutral, so about 5 degrees to the floor, or negatice 5 degrees. Your high-table negative tilt is actually way over tilted, something like 30+ degrees down. Its often poorly described in terms of keybaord height though so its definitely a misconception/myth.
    Anothing thing I'll add for those interested in the muscle physiology is that there is something called the length tension relationship of muscles. Because of the amount of overlap in actin and myosin filaments, muscle strength is greatest when the muscle is in its midrange, and its weak when its in a shortened or lengthened position. Since the tendons of the fingers cross the wrist, that means that being in a neutral position actually makes your fingers stronger and so each keystroke takes left effort. Additionally, because the flexors of the fingers are actually one complex interwoven muscle, being in that neutral position means thay flexing one finger is less likely to compromise the power of another. All that to say, your fingers are more dextrous with less effort when your wrist is neutral. It isn't just about comfort and compression.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your comment and insights!
      On keyboards, negative tilt is always measured in º relative to the table, because that's the only constant; the position of the forearms varies depending on how you sit or stand. That's why negative tilt is not always positive; pun intented 😅

    Just slicing that keyboard in half makes it hella ergonomic, but obviously, if the keys get all jammed up, start feeling stiff, or pull a disappearing act now and then, it's not gonna be comfortable. So, bottom line, a decent keyboard with nice, split keys is the way to go.

    Cute video. Maybe I'm just "old school" but I have been using a Logitech K350 keyboard for over 8 years and have only one complaint about it. I use Linux, so all those extra command buttons are useless. This brings me to my questions:
    Does the Dygma keyboard (any of them) work with Linux?
    I'm constantly packing my keyboard into my backpack, which is full of other computer stuff I use (mouse, cables, headphones, etc.) and it takes a beating. So, my second question: How sturdy are the Dygma keyboards?

    It is funny, yet very inspiring, to see how you fellas try to compete with kinesis.
    First of all: why do you show older version of kinesis? they already have split models and cool magnetic wrist pads.
    Second of all: you will not find kinesis keyboard to be ergonomic if you press the 'A' key with your Ring finger instead of pinky.

    If you are someone who go back and forth using mouse, keyboard, mouse , keyboard 600 times, why do you even need a kinesis keyboard? You are fooling yourself, the point is your hands will barely leave the keyboard, that is possible with Vim, it only makes sense only if you are a programmer

      If you've learned to type on a QWERTY keyboard and/or you want to be able to type on someone else's keyboard occasionally without your fingers being all confused, it makes sense to stick with it, even though other layouts would definitely be better absent those considerations. I'd argue that the ergonomic advantages you get from just using a split ergo keyboard are much greater than what you get from changing your layout, so "ergo with QWERTY" still makes sense.
