    Amtrak 32 caused a commotion on a trip I was on. BNSF crew was told to hold for it. BNSF crew said Amtrak doesn't run on this route. Dispatcher again tells them to hold for Amtrak 32. BNSF crew acknowledges and says they see a headlight. Yep, it was Amtrak 32 on the lead of our private car excursion and was the first passenger train over the line in decades.

    A few units may have disappeared (512 for example), but the majority of the ones that were moved from the deadline track seem to have filtered back into the rest. They did some track work recently, and probably needed to get some engines out of the way. While I doubt any of these units will see Amtrak service again, some don't look to be too bad cosmetically and might find a home at a museum or heritage railroad. I'm crossing my fingers for 1 and 800 myself. Anyway, thanks for sharing, it's super nice to get updated on BG every once in a while. Have a nice day!
    Edit: I was mistaken, it was actually 512 that seems to have moved elsewhere, not 515. 515 is still switching at one of the Autotrain terminals as far as I'm aware.

    I always question on what’s next for AMTK 800? Looks like it’s been there for so long and not much has changed. This is probably the last P40 in Phase IV paint (unless 805 still wears it as it was last scene in Erie, PA as of 2023 in that paint scheme), some of the ones that were sold off that have been in long term storage have recently been undergoing rebuild, while others were eventually scrapped. 800 remains untouched, surprisingly.

      816 will likely be scrapped because of all the damage it took during that wreck because it derailed when it struck a milk truck. At least take off the usable parts from it to help the remaining P40/P42s.

The remaining 32 have been designated for repairs( this includes six coaches, four coach-baggage cars, ten sleeping cars, three transition sleepers, five dining cars, and four Sightseer Lounges) 10 of these wrecked Superliners are already back in service having been repaired. Sightseer Lounges are returning to the Texas Eagle in October per Amtrak’s operating plan. No plans have been announced yet to return them to the Capitol. The crash resulted in oil from the tractor to spill on the cab car's front end, setting the whole front of the cab car on fire. It sucks that Amtrak Surfliner cab car 6902 was short lived, a year after Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner rail service began in 2000. Will you make another video sometime this fall to see the progress made at Beech Grove in the meantime? An article published by trains news wire reveals that most of the Superliners stored during Covid haven’t been returned to service! Going into fiscal year 2025 shop forces will be diverting a lot of resources to repairing 22 Superliners that have been damaged in five derailments since 2020! 10 additional ones involved have already been repaired! I’ve heard that a sleeping car, hauled out of Beech Grove to Chicago just a couple weeks ago was the first car involved in the Empire Builder derailment in 2021 to be returned to service!

    Back in the early 2000's, there was still the "Night Owl" train from VA up to Boston. You would arrive in Boston around 7 or so AM. I took that several times to attend a convention up in Portland Maine. The big problem: The yard where Amtrak parked the cars during the day didn't do the basics.. like provide heating for the cars that were parked outdoors in sub freezing temperatures. First year: no problems. Second year: They "forgot" to hook up heating and all the pipes froze and drenched the inside of the car. Luckily, nothing stinky, but still a problem for those of us intending on sleep. The next year? No problems on the northbound trip. Sleeper had no issues.. But when it came to the trip back south? AGAIN they hadn't bothered to hook up the yard heating... and had left the "sanitary" system full, so this time when it froze, the entire car will apparently filled with sewerage. And bad ordered. After that, the sleepers were removed and no longer went to Boston. I suspect that was a result of orders from Higher Ups from my impressions at the Amtrak lounge talking to the folk up there. Get rid of the sleeper? Get rid of the Night Owl entirely.. I suspect that the multiple sleepers they killed up there (at least 2 of them.. possibly more) went to Beech Grove for 'repairs"... no idea if that ever happened.

    • @nkyrailfan
      @nkyrailfan  7 месяцев назад

      Wow! I had no idea about the night owl.
      That sounds like a great way to get to Boston.

      @@nkyrailfan I know. My sister invited me to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party for the last 5 or 6 years of her life. First time I grabbed the Carolinian to get to DC.. had a great time in the station there.. had a great meal, then grabbed the Night Owl to get to Boston. Coming back, everything went smoothly. The next year: Going up? no problems...but when it was time to head back south (Monday after the convention) they announced that the car had frozen plumbing. THen the next year? It had a total failure of the waste water system, leaving the car filled with Poop. Two years in a row? Followed by the sleeper getting removed permanently. I am reasonably certain that it wasn't a yard crew insurrection. It had to be Amtrak Management not paying attention and keeping their equipment in a proper condition. I ended up driving or flying after that, because no sleeper was available.

      A whack-a-do nutjob posted a video here on RUclips of footage she shot back when Amtrak first acquired BG. They videoed the employee parking area, noting the significance of the way the barbed wire along the top pointed (in or out) that "confirmed" it was for prisoners, identified an old DODX switcher as "evidence" of nefarious intent, and identified some large blower or other equipment housing as the exteriors of "crematories" where all the "FEMA prisoners" would eventually meet their fate. I can't find the video anymore, so it may have long since been taken down or maybe the channel closed. Also, don't forget that all those enclosed auto-rack cars are also "FEMA prisoner transports"!

    Not aware of any locomotives being sold or scrapped since the P40 deal with LTE. But parts are being cannibalized to keep around 140 P42s in operation currently. If 125 new Siemens long distance Chargers are eventually delivered as planned, Amtrak will still need about 100 P42s to maintain existing routes. Then you lose about 5-10 locomotives a year to road strikes. So the 30 year old GE’s will have to be maintained, or there will be train-offs. An alternative would be to double the Siemens order to 250 instead of125, but that will not happen with the existing situation in Congress.
    As for Superliners, Beech Grove is scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel. Indiana politics has not helped, because the desire is to attract a more sexy employment base. Railroading is not a high priority. Instead the state is building $60 million truck stops so that semi drivers and trucking company magnates will have a taxpayer-funded place to rest their weary bones.
