About Ed Sheeran:
Ed Sheeran may be the quintessential pop star of the 2010s: an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning singer/songwriter who seems to acknowledge no boundaries between styles or eras with elements of folk, hip-hop, pop, dance, soul, and rock woven throughout his music.
His incredible catalogue includes the studio albums ‘+’ (plus), ‘x’ (multiply) and ‘÷’ (divide) which spawned hit singles such as ‘The A team’ , ’Lego House’, ‘Sing', ‘Thinking Out Loud’, ‘Photograph’, ‘Shape Of You’, ‘Castle on The Hill’ and ‘Perfect’.
In 2019, Ed Sheeran released the genre-spanning ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ which featured a wide-range of artists including ‘Justin Bieber’, ‘Camilla’ Cabello’, ‘Travis Scott’, ‘Eminem’, ‘Cardi B, ‘Paulo Londra’, ‘Bruno Mars’ and ‘Stormzy’ amongst many others, producing hits such as ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Beautiful People’, ‘South of The Border’ and ‘Take Me Back To London’.

Holly King Yes, glad he tells a true story, one too many of us relate to. Sad it’s a helpless place to be in when there’s nothing more anyone can do, substances are quick or long brutal years watching a loved one die and not be able to get near them anymore. I’d say the worst is seeing them fade into a stranger, then forget their own family even children exist. Addiction over all is hard to accept...

Shitty comment.
Same to you dear. I have been suffering through a chronic disease for the last 14 years and its so painful and i am very positive but some days are really bad and it gets difficult to see the light. And the good in the world. And i feel so dead. And i have been having such a bad couple of months. The routine shift due to covid made my issue worse. And i couldnt help but feel the pain of not just today, or this week or month but of all the 14 years and this song just played and played in loop. And then finally i gave myself a pep talk, came across your comment and it made me cry again but a bit happier. Like i felt your wish and i truly truly wish the same for you with all my heart.

@tallyherkids8095 I figured I was being abused at home anyway, and if anyone was going to be doing that to my body, I was going to make money off it. This video gives more meaning when you realize Ed Sheeran was once homeless himself. What if he wrote this with someone in mind?
This is making me really sad. Just thinking about it being someone he knew
jarisfurry no he wasn't.
Actually Ed said that he wasn't homeless but only sort of
If you don't have a permanent , safe roof your head your head every night you are homeless
implied in the original comment was that he was homeless to the extent the woman in this video was. He wasn't. He was without a bed on some nights after gig and occasionally slept on the tube. But most nights he had a roof over his head. He may have technically been without a home, and if he was in ordinary employment then yes he would be described as homeless, but this is relatively common for a lot of musicians. No point people trying to make out he lived on the streets for years like some tabloids tried to do.
Who else thought that this was a love song when they first heard it but now realizes that it's a depressing song.
Fernnie G
Lol no it's a about a hooker on drugs
Yeah..
I've always knew it's a depressing song, before checking for the meaning behind the lyrics, I've always thought it was about a girl who used to excel in school sportswise but somehow failed to get a decent job and life, ending in prostitution and death due to drug abuse... it seems I wasn't too far off
Fernnie G right
When Ed said: the worst things in life come free to us
I felt that...
That's the part that gets me the worst thing in life come free to us but also the best things in life are free what a double edged sword oh God gif us

I used to listen to this song in active addiction because I could relate to it. I am now listening to it with over a year clean. My life has completely changed and I am so grateful everyday for my new life and my family. I’m never turning back! I don’t have to go “outside” ever again.
Did you get to a point where you don't even think about it? Or while listening to the song, there not even a tiny feeling about That Feeling? I never stop hoping that it's possible and not just for those who now have these lives where they are completely different people. I know That is possible, some addicts became healers or even doctors etc.
I am not at risk of using dangerous drugs today, but still, when i remember only that 1 minute of ...there's not even a word for it... feeling good, like exhaling all my life traumas. And do crave it. Not in a way that an active user does - that feeling whould not allow me to spill my heart on youtube. Even youtube lost some value then.
I just really wish that i'll know that feeling and in this lifetime.
Thank you for sharing, it gave me the courage to write something like this for the first time. ❤

what?
sub 'n' smile! Haha nice story, I'm just not that gullable. Sorry. And, and just so you know. Random subs don't get you anywhere. I have 14k subs, but they're random subs who subscribed because I have 1 popular lyrics video of 16 mln views (for which I don't get money). The videos I upload get like 500 views. If the 14k subs were for the content I now upload, it would be considerably more, but seeming as they're random subs, I don't get shit. That's what awaits you too for trying to get subs this way. Best thing to do is just start making videos and hope you go somewhere. YT is not an easy business. The one thing I wanna give you as advice: don't make up some lame ass story and lie to your subs. I know, I know. This is YT, so you're probably gonna stick with your story, but just try to consider what I'm saying here. We both know you're not being truthful. I'll throw you a bone and subscribe, but it isn't gonna matter for shit. You'll see.

@@icytrap not necessarily,"this time,we'll fade out tonight, straight down the line" - could easily be a reference to a 'line of coke/heroin. and obviously when whacked "we fade out" lyrics are often to be taken differently by different people.
There's no' right way especially when as ambiguous. It is a beautiful song, by far Sheeran's best imho.

Who would have knew he was going to be a superstar??
I was an addict for 12 years. This song came out at the very worst of my addiction . homeless and would do anything for a fix. This song is the reason I decided to eventually get treatment. I'm now 3 years sober and no longer crumbling like pastries or sinking and wasting. I'm now married with a beautiful baby boy. if you're here listening to this song because you're an addict and lost and hopeless just know that sobriety is possible . life can be so beautiful again. fight for your life. You deserve it

You guys never made this song die...
No lie, this song never fails to make me cry. I still remember when I was really young and I loved the melody and thought it was a pretty song. I memorized the lyrics and sang to it on the radio. But being young, I never really understood what the lyrics meant. Then one day it came on the radio again and i told my mother I loved the song. I said it was happy. She said it was sad. I asked, "How so?" She repeated the lyrics to me and I saw the song in a new light. I was pretty quick to piece together lyrics like, "Breathing in snowflakes," and "In a pipe we fly to the motherland." I told my mother, "I understand now," and turned my head to look out the window as it snowed. She asked, "Thinking?" I replied, "Yeah. The snow is pretty," while tears ran down my cheeks. I'm now 17. I haven't heard this song in years, but I just finished listening to it again. My heart still aches. My tears still fall.

The fact that he wrote it when he was barely 18 or 19 is itself mindblowing let alone his vocals!
Ed is definitely a gift to mankind❤️!

the video is from 2010 but Ed wrote the song when he was younger.....anyway late teens:)

For Ed it's somehow always too cold outside XD
Yeah, it's really cold outside, it's so cute. I love it. Ed probably meant that it's cold outside and warm inside, under the blanket.
Ksenija Jemensek or, if we go a little bit deeper - "cold outside" may be because of the weather, BUT it can be also an emotional state of mind, because this world is so cruel and "cold" lol just thinking out loud :) inside you're full of love, surrounded by people you love and they love you back, outside there's only strangers and weird shit that's happening on this world haha Happy Holidays, btw!! :)
Samanta Rizzi Yeah, it's emotional, I can feel every day.
Ksenija Jemensek you probably didn't get what I meant... never mind lol I hate winter too btw
Samantha Winter, I hate winter too. I perfectly know what you meant.

The fact that most of us were so young when this song came out. But now we actually understand the subject and it makes me so sad to think this is some peoples reality
This song hits so hard , reminds me of a highschool friend who graduated top of our batch and finish college with flying colors from our country's top university. Sadly , a year after graduating he passed away due to heart attack. His someone who came from a very poor family which was his driving force to be on top. To cope with the pressure he abused alcohol and become a smoker , took so much toll on his body and little does his family know he had been suffering from lung cancer by the time he graduated. I guessed maybe God doesn't want him to suffer more and maybe his mission on Earth was completed already. I want to think as well that he is now an angel beside God
Very sad 😔 sorry mate x
Do you believe in Jesus?
Don't tell us your history crack, nobody doesn't matter 😎
Your God made him suffer in the first place. According to Christianity he planned all of it.

The song has deeper meaning. For those who don’t know. Ed was in homeless shelters when he was younger and this songs about a girl named Angel that he knew. She was a prostitute who was addicted to drugs. “Angels to fly”
Not quite, Ed met 'Angel' in a homeless shelter where he was performing for a xmas charity type of thing, he wasn't actually a homeless person, sometimes sofa surfed and slept on trains at times after moving to London as a teenager, but he was still an independent artist at that time

White lips, pale face
Breathing in snowflakes
Burnt lungs, sour taste
Light's gone, day's end
Struggling to pay rent
Long nights, strange men
And they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us
Cause we're just under the upper hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And she don't want to go outside tonight
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland
Or sells love to another man
It's too cold outside
For angels to fly
Angels to fly
Ripped gloves, raincoat
Tried to swim and stay afloat
Dry house, wet clothes
Loose change, bank notes
Weary-eyed, dry throat
Call girl, no phone
And they say
She's in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting

For angels to fly
An angel will die
Covered in white
Closed eye

I honestly really need to get this off my chest. 10 years ago, songs used to be so 'real' like she will be loved by maroon 5, love the way you lie by rihanna, eminem and skylar grey, the a team by ed sheeran and so on... what happened? Where are the songs describing real life struggles and sacrifices and emotions? Where are the songs that actually made it seem like you were listening to a piece of art, poems almost? It seems it got downhill after 2016 and now it feels we hit rock bottom. Also with the social media, instagram etc dominating life so much and people aiming for those 'perfect' lifestyles, musicians trying to make bops about sex and fun. What happened to the simpler times when we didn't compare our lives as much and put our struggles into words?
I miss it and i didn't realize times could change this much...
Yeah, i know some people would say 'we just grew up' but i was 25 when this came out and now 35 and i can confirm that times did really change regardless of the 'growing up' we did. It's a much more toxic society, sadly.
You both are very true, unfortunately :(

1. All Time Low (the band not the song)

Her Crybaby album is also AMAZING she talks about depression, being a child in a home where theirs infidelity and abuse its just all great!!!!!)

Angel was a real person Ed knew when he was doing small gigs.
Yes ❤❤❤❤truth.
So many great double meanings in this song. A-team could mean she used to be an honor roll student or that she takes class- A drugs. The sinking wasting bit could be either from drugs or HIV, but could also reference the disillusionment that many of us experience in the transition from childhood to adulthood. The pipe could be referencing either a literal crack pipe or a 'pipe dreams' that pair with the earlier reference to day-dreaming. 'Snowflakes' could be cocaine or the cold-environment that is also reinforced. It could be an over-reaching analysis, and maybe Sheeran didn't intentionally write these lines as double entendre's but the ambiguity in this song I feel is quite masterful and makes the song relatable to damn near everyone.
