Even if you think it is safe in the cockpit area, you should always be wearing a safety harness in the open ocean. Especially since you are sailing solo. May you always have fair winds and following seas.
Having spent most of my adult life at sea, I enjoy the sailing, but what is priceless to me are your perspectives on life in general. Thank you for sharing . I grew up off the grid in a remote fishing village, your comments are spot on.
Having a strong boat in the ocean is comforting, but having a Mrs. Wave Rover back home taking care of the rhododendrons is at least equally comforting!
I can eat the same thing everyday as well. Makes meal prep and planning pretty simple. Thanks for sharing your adventure, I’m completely hooked on the idea that you can travel the world being pushed by the wind.
Just beautiful. It's as though you, your ship and the environment are becoming as one. In my sailing experience, adverse weather conditions have always felt like something negative that needs to be tackled and overcome, you seem able to embrace it as part of the larger experience of sailing, it's wonderful to see.
Again and again, thank you for sharing your journey. Your life perspectives are really cool too. One day I hope to follow your path... one day. Fair winds.
Excellent video Alan again! Your rhythm of shooting calm passage in story telling while there are 10ft waves in the background is just hard to beat from the dynamic drama point of view. Your professional approach to issues, whatever they are, must come only from years of experience and iterative self-development, not forgetting God’s leading and protection. Stay well and healthy as you are 🙏. With high respect, Janne/Finland
Brilliant view of that sunrise! Loved your camping story … my wife and I had a similar experience when we had our first canoe camping adventure … once that first portage is behind you the experience becomes magical. Very interesting to see the ship alert system in action and how about her WR salute … very cool. Thanks for the self steering top tip … well described. Speaking of the Mk lll, my OCD gets triggered every time I see those two shackles on the control arms … why are they hooked on differently? Probably just me but one of them could do with being repositioned. Hold fast! ⛵️🇨🇦⚓️😄
Amazing that both you and the other ship used and could understand semaphore.. Bit of a lost art these days. Must have been great to be recognized . The AIS would have given them your name...
I have a friend who lives on Mudge Island just off Gabriola Island. To get there from Vancouver you first get a ferry to Nanaimo, then another ferry to Gabriola Island then row over to Mudge Island. What a journey but not half as exciting as you're experiencing at the moment.
It is hard to imagine a better boat than yours for solo ocean sailing. If anything at all could improve I guess it would be insulation. Maybe possible to build a similar boat using 7 cm divinycell board instead of marine plywood? About this off-grid stuff I feel that the real reason you can be off-grid at all is actually the grid. Your boat is built and in most details consists of material imported to you from the grid. The boat is an idustrial product put together by you and I feel you have made a beautiful job doping that. I love your videos. Many thanks!!
The boat could easily be built of other materials. We spoke of that during the planning phase of the design but discounted it due to the cost. The design was to be accessible to builders of limited means.
Hi Captain, very interesting as always, me being Yeoman of signals at the Royal Natal Y/C and a radio ham like the semaphore comment. the shock cord on the self-steering excellent, after 60 years sailing under 30 ft yachts never too old to learn. Captain Cook 80, Durban S.A.
You've clearly done your homework on nutrition, perfect strategy for sustaining yourself during a passage where mealtimes might be irregular for whatever reason. Fish oils, tallow, eggs...this squares with everything I've learned too. If you ever get the chance, please speak on your previous experience with a metal boat and why you chose to go with plywood for this build. Because as with nutrition, it seems you've put a lot of consideration into the whole thing and I'd like to follow the paths of your reasoning. I myself would like to build (something sized more for a couple to spend whole seasons on), but am still up in the air about steel vs plywood. I keep circling back to a Brent boat in my thinking, or a larger Wave Rover style if one is on the horizon.
We appreciate you sharing your adventures. We are bracing for Hurricane rain and wind here in Georgia. Be safe friend. Thoughts and prayers 🙏 from Georgia. GaMike
I love that the other ship sent you a message - cool!! OK I've been wondering about something...how come there haven't been any birds or dolphins sailing/flying along with you? I watched the Golden Globe race and sometimes flying fish landed right on their deck - just in time for breakfast lol
Enjoyed this video, particulary the explanation of how you use the AIS. A very impressive system. In the comments you said, "You can break any habit in three weeks." You are sharing a lot of what sounds like hard earned wisdom as you sail. Are there any books or authors you have found that have particularly impressed you that you would be willing to share?
Had to duck under cover and batten down the hatches here in Florida for an hurricane and I’ve gotten my Wi-Fi back and I see Wave Rover hasn’t posted for six days. Can someone up date me on Alan‘s progress? I’m not sure what’s going on with him. Had some pretty tough storms out in the Atlantic. I’m just wondering how he is doing. Thanks
I don't follow his channel. Will try to find it.... Just found it. Lol, I didn't ask him about his system, he had contacted me but I felt that his system was inadequate for air flow so I went with the air only system. I didn't realize that his feelings were hurt about this. This is not the first time that he has been negative about me sadly as others have mentioned his comments in the past.
@@RoversAdventure That's a shame that he has been negative. I think you have it right - he might be a bit envious of your path. Like I said before, you are my favorite sailing channel. I also follow Sam Holmes. But your channel is comprehensive - master carpentry, adventure, nutrition/lifestyle - I learn so much! I admire a great many things about what you are doing. However, I, personally, could not eat the same thing day in, day out. No hot sauce? Peppers, jalapenos & otherwise? Onions, olives, artichokes, tomatoes? Cheese, Oh, the cheese? & don't get me started on bread (or lack there of); I could not take it. & is that the only meal you eat in a day? Anyway, I'm glad you are enjoying yourself. Cheers.
Condiments encourage overeating. If the food is of good quality, it tastes good. Sven Yrwind goes hundreds of days eating the same thing, once per day, without cooking.
You should switch to relative motion, not real. Relative gives what you see in real life if you are moving. If the function is possible with AIS, though.
He is a trained Naval Officer. Navies use true North presentations on all radar repeaters and tactical displays. It's what he's used to. Relative motion is just as good, it all depends on what you are comfortable with.
