I don't usually comment on videos, but I just had to express my gratitude for this one. I remember I tried this template out at the start of 2023 and copied it step by step on my computer. Since then, I have been using it every day. Now, I return to this video, almost 18 years old, at the first day of 2024, to make a new one for this year. Although my version is not exactly the same, the fundamentals still remain identical, and I am truly grateful. Thank you. If I still have not learnt how to do it without the tutorial, see you next year! 😂

I think this may be my 3rd time commenting on a video in about 10 years... but I’m just so grateful right now! Thank you thank you thank you thank you! I never thought the day would come when I look forward to budgeting... something I’ve managed to avoid my entire life!
Quick tip: If there are values you're using over and over that are likely to change in the future, make them super easy to change. Like those budget categories, budget amount, or starting balance, you can reference a column or cell to set those values up instead of manually typing it. Changing those later (especially the categories) the way it's done here could be a huge pain to do without overwriting what you've already entered. I'd recommend setting up a sheet strictly for settings and putting all of your values there. That way, changing the values in that settings sheet will change them correctly across the entire budget without breaking it.
I prefer doing a second tab and labeling what the value is by note or cell, then linking to the cell with the actual value. It makes it easier to update over time such as budget amounts per category.
I don't quite understand what you mean, but I WANT to understand! I've been without a budget for months now because Mint shut off and I've finally decided to quit YNAB. I've made my sheet but your tip sounds like something I should be doing; could you at all elaborate how I do this?? Thanks!

How about you make one that also tracks your credit card expenses and interest rate, most of people have credit card debt and high interest rate, they have no idea how much money they are losing, it can be very helpful. Thanks
So stoked to dive into all your excel budget videos. I've been wanting to budget for years but have been terrified of excel. You've made this so accessible. My pocket thanks you!!!

Thank you for posting this! After moving out of NY and bringing my NY pay with me down south, I am finally ready to properly budget my expenses and pay off my debt. I will be on my way to finally auto pay the reoccurring bills and build a savings account. I'm excited to try this!
Nice! I am surprised that you didn't make some of the fields, such as month number conditional so that they would not display computed values for rows that are not yet used.
I am having trouble with the income calculation. I must be doing something else wrong because the formula is the same as you posted. =Sumifs(Table1[[#All],[Income]],Table1[[#All],[Month]],I1,Table1[[#All],[Category]],I2)

OMG… “this” is AWESOME SAUCE!!!! I absolutely love excel, but have been debating on purchasing a software package such as Quicken. However… after sitting through your demo here, I’m going to take a step back and re-evaluate my thoughts… HUGE THANK-YOU for taking the time and sharing this!!!!! 🙂
I know this is 4 years old but, I've recently tried this template. It's quick and simple to use which is nice for creating a simple spreadsheet of daily expenses. I really appreciate it's ability to quickly and easily do a running total for me based off of each month. My one single drawback with this is the way it autofills. There is no way to prevent this from auto filling unto infinity. This causes my $1400 laptop for excel to crash, slow down, and stop working altogether. I've since deleted the autofill portion and used it as a simple breakdown spreadsheet to keep track of what I'm spending and where. Maybe I misunderstood a step but, I didn't appreciate the way it did not let me work these problems out. So I simply deleted them and added the formula to each block along the way.
When doing my sumifs, the sum range is being recorded as "E:E" instead of the "Table1[[#All],[Income]"... Anyone know why that is? UPDATE: Figured it out, when creating the table, the range wasn't infinite (A$:G$). I had to convert the table back to normal range through the Table menu, then redo the Format as Table. When doing so you should see the popup window mentioning the range being A$:G$
Hi, I'm having the same problem. However, when I try to resize the table to A$:G$ it says the inputted range is invalid. Would you happen to have any idea as to why it is telling me this?
@@whyworksmarternotharder what about a solution for the formula of 'balance' not copying down to a new row because the very first row has a different formula than the rest of the values. eg first row formula for balance is just the starting balance but subsequent rows have a sum formula. thanks for the help :)
@@loops7028 As long as you've formatted it as a table like he has, you can double click the bottom right corner (the little square) of one of the balance cells to autofill the formula only to the bottom of the table. That way it doesn't go so super long. You can also click and drag that corner in any direction if you're looking to autofill a small number of cells.
I found your channel because the video popped up in my feed. Even though I wasn't even looking for excel or budget videos. I did learn something. And it was super helpful. I'd definitely have to watch the video side by side as I set this up. But I like the idea of it.
Can you help explain how to deselect The Header and Starting balance cell in column G? I’m using a Mac and I’ve tried the command key, the 2 finger press on the touchpad, and the control button. I can’t deselect more than one cell.
Wow I'm absolutely mind-blown. I had been looking for a way to present my financial data in a clear way with all the automated "summaries" for quite a while and looking through apps which haven't been what I wanted. Thanks for explaining how to use Excel in such a clear and simple way. The answer was right in front of me this whole time, I'm going to start doing this right away! Btw, your video was second on the list when I searched "Spreadsheet household finances" on youtube. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this!!! Instead of doing the color bar showing spending progress, I did a few additional columns to show the budgeted amount, running total, and the remaining balance.
Before commenting it is apt that I say 'thank you!' for your effort. I guess I'll have to go through it again and and again as it was way too fast for a novice like me as I approached the middle of the lesson. Thanks once more, and it was what I needed, and it detailed, as well as free!
This video is super helpful, thank you! We are about to put all of our income into an offset account so I need to keep track of all our expenses virtually. This will help so much!
This is amazing and I'm really excited at the thought of using this budget sheet from now on. I got confused with the sumifs, but eventually figured it out. It would be interesting if the chart also showed how much you exceed your spending in a certain category.
Thanks. I started a financial accounting course and have been wondering how to use Excel for personal finances. I searched “how to keep a running budget in Excel” 👍
I had to think long and hard about my budget as I am an international traveler. I felt this method is a great method to explain to people how I travel and it might help me better plan my travel budget. Next time someone asks me how much do I spend in traveling I might have an answer. It took me more that 15 minutes but it was time well spent as I love Excel sheets. I have been traveling for 16 months and I have no idea how much money I spent or on what? I have not gone broke so I keep on traveling 4 contents, 12 countires, 130 cities, 33 plus airplanes, and a lot of busses and trains. If there is a way I can connect this information with Google Maps or a Map of some kind I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you!

Awesome! Stay tuned for part 2!!
Thats what i call a tutorial on how to make a budged !!!!! THANX A LOT !!!! This is GREAT

I found you by typing, "How to make a revolving budget in Excel". You were the 1st to pop up. I know very little about Excel or working with spreadsheets, so it took me slightly more than 15mins and I use the word "slightly" in the loosest of terms. 😐However, I now have a budget and I thank you for you CLEAR instructions! 😀😀👍🏾👍🏾
I never subscribe or like, but because there were not 15 ads or 30 mins of bs or selling, I did to help you out. Love creators like this. They provide info and a simple ask, no bs
This is the best excel video ever!! super helpful, keep them coming!!
Wow thank you!! Will do!
This ...this is beautiful
I don’t need to do it by hand anymore
I am really thankful for you ❤️
Thanks for the kind words! Glad it helps out!!
Nice! Great job, I just Google'd how to create an income expense sheet with excel and you were the 3rd choice I believe. I followed along with you (which was easy) and was able to create my own excel sheet. I've played with excel in the past and wasn't able to get the functions to work but, watching you I got the hang of it. I will be watching more of your videos.
Wow, I know a lot about excel as I used to be an analyst, but you taught me a few things I didn't know, and I got a lot of value out of this! Thank you so much for creating this!!
Literally typed “you tube excel budgeting and scheduling” you were very 1st post and I’m incredibly thankful ❤
This is the first formula I've ever learned, and I'm obsessed with spreadsheets now! Thanks!
Awesome! Love to hear it! Welcome to the nerd life!

I searched for “how to set up a budget and I found your video. For an untechnical person, 15 min is kind of a joke. I watched over and over and took notes to figure it out and it took more than that time but I'm hopeful I have it figured out now! Thanks for the lessons!
Thank you for the quick and easy guide, I was wondering what version of Excel you were using for the video.
This tutorial is fantastic ! But for some reasons at 5:20 ; "=sum.if("formula) is apparently too long to reach the equation right for me budget planer. I don't know if I have done something wrong ... anyway, it is very helpful. Thank you !
Feel free to pause at any time if I’m talking too fast! Also if formulas give you issues, watch my sumifs video for a deeper explanation!
Awesome! We can even use the playback option to slow it down
I agree that your videos are good and very informational and I have watched them all. Unfortunately right at 5 minutes I'm getting lost. When i put in the Sumifs as it states in the video I get an error message. Can you please assist me.
I did the exactly same formula but mine don't working, showing 0

Agreed!
Thanks so much for this simple tool. You have helped me a lot! I already had my own templet that I had been using for over 2 years, but this helped me figure out a few ways to make it efficient. Thank you!
Great tutorial! However, I am stuck on the conditional formatting. I am using Excel Online, and I don't have the option to put in the value amount for the Data Bar selection. I'm a bit confused.
watching this in 2023 and never fails to educate people. now i have a basic format to track my life financially
This video is GREAT! I actually consider myself to be pretty nifty with excel and I already have an automated budget but it has taken me years to finally get it right. I enjoyed watching you set up the budget and excel and I learned some new tricks as well. Thanks for sharing
This is the information I have been looking for. I like working smarter not harder!! Thank you! I knew I could create a budget with Excel quickly and simply and inexpensively and you just taught me how to start doing that. Is it possible to enter expenses in a calendar format rather than listed line by line? I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning about budgeting with Excel. Thanks again. :)

Nice! I am surprised that you didn't make some of the fields, such as month number conditional so that they would not display computed values for rows that are not yet used.
yeah how do i get rid of balances and months that I haven't entered data in yet, my computer is not happy.
How to do it?
I am having trouble with the income calculation. I must be doing something else wrong because the formula is the same as you posted. =Sumifs(Table1[[#All],[Income]],Table1[[#All],[Month]],I1,Table1[[#All],[Category]],I2)

Same issue. Initially I used I2:I15 and applied that to the data validation table. Don't do that. Manually type in every category into the data validation tool under categories. Mine worked for me after I did that.
I don't know if this is your problem, but I didn't use January as the month I used April, but I put the number one when copying his video. When I put 4 it fixed.
This will really help me out, I recently moved with my gf and we are still trying to manage our finances, thank you so much❤
I wanted to check my finances in a way my bank doesn't provide (charts, balances, expenses per category etc.) and of course, someone would have made a RUclips video on that, if not an entire channel. This video is exactly what I want as a first step. Thanks for setting me up!

I also need help, i am stuck also in copying the formula to the rest of columnG, but my problem is the value from G7 and so on shows up in error, even tho there is still much left if i calculated it correctly. Please help me
would be good if we can see the full screen when you was making the SUMIF formula
Yes I believe if you watch my dashboard version of this video it will show it on there
you can also see the full formula in the formula bar
How do you do that at 3:46? I can’t figure out how to select a cell like it is there

Question: Why did you put formula for Balance as =SUM(X+Y-Z) instead of just =X+Y-Z. Thank you
This was super helpful and I really appreciate how thorough and simple it is. Thank you!
OMG… “this” is AWESOME SAUCE!!!!
I absolutely love excel, but have been debating on purchasing a software package such as Quicken. However… after sitting through your demo here, I’m going to take a step back and re-evaluate my thoughts…
HUGE THANK-YOU for taking the time and sharing this!!!!!
Anyway to fix it so that the file size isn't so big? Opening it takes a while and ctrl+end shows more than a million row, most of which are unused

@@spamdam1588 How do you do that exactly... Using the small drop down square. What option allows you to stop the formula from continuing to autofill

I found your channel because the video popped up in my feed. Even though I wasn't even looking for excel or budget videos. I did learn something. And it was super helpful. I'd definitely have to watch the video side by side as I set this up. But I like the idea of it.
I searched easy budget in excel. Your video was the first to pop up.
Every time I start to use the Sumifs function, It comes up as $0
Me too. HELP!!
This was a great template for me....The only problem was that it was way too fast for a novice like me. :)
You can always pause and it will work awesomely : D
Thanks once more, and it was what I needed, and it detailed, as well as free!
this was the easiest to follow and most helpful tutorial I have ever seen.

This is amazing and I'm really excited at the thought of using this budget sheet from now on. I got confused with the sumifs, but eventually figured it out. It would be interesting if the chart also showed how much you exceed your spending in a certain category.

Thank you!
