Beans pull nitrogen from the air dude... they can get it from the ground but it's not as good for the soil health.

The tower... rotate your pots from bottom to top regularly to keep nitrogen draining into the top of the tower

My dad was an organic gardener his whole life. No matter where we lived we had a garden and a freezer full of vegetables for the winter. One of the things he taught me was to plant a second batch of beans 2 weeks after planting the first batch. Especially if the garden was tiny. Thanks for your videos.

In college I killed every plant I bought including a cactus. I have learned so much from your channel that I am now able to grow veggies for my family. I would love to see some tips on how to harvest/dry out seeds from the garden to keep it going year after year without having to keep buying seeds. Thanks for all your amazing videos!

PSA: Some commenters are correct in that beans are legumes and thus fix nitrogen with Rhizobium bacteria, so it's important not to OVER-fert with nitrogen. But this is also quite a unique way to grow beans vs. how they are normally grown, which is why I recommended adding some balanced organic fertilizer that containers nitrogen AND other nutrients.

The beauty of the greenstalk is that you can just reorder the layers, so you could rotate the bottom level up to the top and vice-versa, and in theory those soluble nutrients will wash back down and re-equalize. It won't be perfect, as the original bottom plants have already absorbed a lot, but I've had success with this approach. I've also noticed that, despite the great design, greenstalks tend to starve the lower levels of water. I suspect that the weep holes just start getting clogged. So, I tend to rotate everything every few weeks to just keep things more balanced, and it gives me a chance to wash out those watering trays. And if you rotate the tiers proactively, you tend to prevent the nutrient imbalance before it happens. (I do the first couple of rotations after only one week each, because a lot of the nutrient migration happens early.)
Side note: I use letters and numbers for the pockets, so each tier gets a letter and each pocket gets a number, so A1-6, B1-6, etc. Makes it easier if I want to keep a log and/or manage the succession planting of greens. I just write the numbers on the outside of each pocket with a permanent marker.

Sounds labor intensive and defeats the purpose of buying their expensive vertical planter. 🙄
Those planters are extremely heavy to be “rotating “ from top to bottom and vice-versa. Some people use containers to put less stress on their backs & knees. Doesn’t sound efficient for women and people with mobility issues.

Suggestion for all the nutrients going to the bottom layers, couldn't you just disassemble the layers and put top trays on bottom and bottom ones on top? I also heard when they look like they are done producing, cut the plant way back to one little sprig with 2-3 leaves and it will regrow into new producing plant. It has an established root system.

I'll tell you my experience with Greenstalk. I ordered the 1st one as a leaf 5 tier. I got the base on wheels. Absolutely no issues with it. Then with coupon I ordered the original 5 tier. No base and it's level, has fallen over 2 times now. Excuse excuse excuse and they will send me a refund when I send it back! Are you kidding me? It's not top heavy, put together properly and planted with Promix.. All I asked for was another base. Not willing and from the son-in-law of owner. So I'm telling everyone to not trust Greenstalk to do the right thing!

Question PLEASE??? 🙏 When should you pick the flowers & when not to... & on which plants?? 🤷‍♀️ I heard some plants are done with their life cycle once they flower, but you can pick the flower heads to keep them producing longer. Or to help young plants grow bigger, such as with cucumber & pepper plants. So I picked all the first flowers of my young bean plants... but then saw a vid saying to pick excess foliage to spur more flowers to grow.
    I'm so confused. 😒

Hi Kevin. I’m a new follower and relatively new gardener. I’ve been binge watching your videos lately and you got my butt off the couch to finally set up my compost bin. It had been shoved into the corner of my yard from when I moved in (3 years ago...)
My question is for my current new project of bush beans. I’ve never planted them before and the seeds were given to me by my father-in-law so I don’t know what variety they are. I’ve ordered a set of 5, 10-gallon grow bags and am planning on transferring them in. I was eyeing a tower but the price was a bit too much for me currently. Anyways, how many can a plant in each bag without them being overcrowded. Just 2 plants or could I manage 3?

I’m very disappointed in the Greenstalk company. I just purchased a Leaf for my strawberries because their website & on the materials I received said it was fine to plant strawberries in the Leaf, only to find they are no longer recommended for overwintering strawberries in the Leaf per the inventor’s daughter on the GreenStalk Gardeners closed FB group. I reached out to the company, and customer service said I’d have to pay $25 to return it & then order an Original. It’s unfair to ask the customer to pay for their marketing mistake. I was so excited for such a neat concept, but it’s not a good company.

I am happy to transplant my beans because the bugs eat them before they get large. Thanks for the tip!

I just started getting into the bean world :) I'm growing 1 blue lake 1 yellow brittlewax 2 dragon tongues, 2 royal burgundy, 2 mung bean plants, all are bush type lol. Growing indoors in a grow tent as it's still too cold here in Nova Scotia. Just wondering if I need to alter their light cycle to trigger flowering or if they flower on their own? I have one plant per 2 gallonish pots, under a cheap 1000w led light in promix hp soil (going to run general hyo 3 part nutrient line). Thanks in advance!

If you want to save seeds how long can you harvest before you should start letting the beans dry

I have the 5 tier with spinner base unopened if anyone is interested I'd take $80 for it. I got it as a gift and it's just not my thing.

I am by no means an expert, but I feel like an Aquaponics set up would be best for preventing nutrients from succumbing to gravity, as the nutrients are constantly replenished in an Aquaponics system. And no need for adding nutrients... just feed your fish good organic food!
Anyways, nice video and great info. I love the idea of vertical gardening/farming
