With a ~4% chance of getting the suspect's gender wrong, I feel like using this technique of "instantly ruling out suspects" could potentially lead to incorrect convictions like what you've told us about in your series all about math issues in criminal trials.

@@johnschwalbTrans people are not mentioned in the paper at all, so I'd assume that the 30 males and 30 females are all cisgender. Btw, with a sample size this small, I suspect that there could be some serious overfitting. I think the only way to know for sure is to repeat the study with way more people.
I rather doubt this is a tool that would be used to nail down a conviction. It seems more like a tool to direct focus onto a specific group of suspects. But obviously, if it suggests you're looking for a male and all the males have alibis, one would need to look at the potential female suspects.
The reason trans people aren't mention in the study is because the study used the traditional use of the word "gender" to differentiate between male and female.
VS2 is using "gender" in the title because it's currently a buzzword. The procedure is detecting sex.

The bionic arm is next level. I feel like there will come a time when people will choose it over a normal limb if it can get an equivalent or better response time. Especially if it was digital and/or replaceable.

Also you can eat healthier, work out, and train in martial arts or sports to increase your reaction time. Nature gave you an amazing organic machine called the human body that has two powerful arms. @@bladetheatrics so what I'm reading from this is that it is possible. Training is all good but there is a limit to the body that might be able to be overcome with technology. Now is not the time but seems like it's possible and seems closer in time than I previously imagined.

Heads up the hand study has a sample size of about 60 people. Going to need more research for anything conclusive, but it's better than nothing.
Here's how they collected the data:
"Each subject was instructed to not wash their hands for a minimum of one hour prior to sampling. Hand odor was collected from each subject while sitting indoors. A pretreated 2 in. x 2 in., 12ply, 100% cotton DUKAL gauze was swiped on each palm of the hands and then squeezed between the palms for 10 min. Upon completion of the 10 min hold, the sampled gauze was placed back into its respective 10 mL vial and capped."
sounds big enough to show significant effect size, too small for granularity in accuracy :) Would love to see repeated across people groups, cultures, diets, illnesses, etc
@@cybergarrett I'd say its too small to show true significance, but instead shows that something interesting MIGHT be happening there. 96% is crazy high, but what if there were other biasing factors which affected the entire group due to such a small size.

I've actually been wondering if HRT would change your appearance enough to get away with crimes.

Kind of curious how trans people read in that hand odor study. Also feel like it's worth pointing out, the study reads at a 96% accuracy, or about 5% margin, or 1 in 20, meaning in 60 persons there's maybe 3 misidentifications. They do point out if a third variable is added the accuracy could be improved. Neat stuff. I want to look at it more when I have less of a headache.
I would think that if the person is on HRT it might effect it, that's a good question.
I would imagine, since hrt changes your scent, this hand scent would be changed as well. Educated guess.
