Exposing the Bootleg of “Toy Story 2”

- Recently I found a bootleg VHS of “Toy Story 2” that is well known online for being rare at a bargain price of only $9. (for context, the tape usually sells at a much more higher price, usually going for $1,000+) However, what you may not know is that the tape is actually very different from the rest of these. If you want to see that tape in great detail, how’s your chances of seeing a video about it today?

This video is hilarious.
Holy shit, I was not expecting you here, but thank you! Your videos i also consider to also be hilarious every time they are released and I can’t wait for the next one to be released.
Most of the bootlegs I’ve encountered is just a literal copy of the standard retail release, nothing really bizarre yet.
Don’t worry. I’m sure that one day you will find a copy, especially if it has the new line errors and all that. Strangely, all I had to do to find my copy is search up “rare Pixar vhs” on eBay.
Nothing BUZZ-are heh
...........
Most of the bootlegs DVDs I have are the wrong movies
I know the reason why there’s no Audience reactions in these bootlegs.
These bootleggers use a radio and tune it into the movie so the Audio can be HD. I have a bootleg that had Radio audio then cuts to the actual theatre audio.
Just like your bootleg Space Chimps DVD?
Genius of the bootleggers
I was telling my mom about this VHS and it reminded her of a story.
Okay, so my mom used to work at Toys R Us around the time Shrek was being released on DVD. Toys R Us was having a promotion for the release that had to be mentioned every time someone checked out. Then one guy comes up and my mom mentions the promotion. Then the guy says “What? Shrek? I’ve had that for months now.”
Toy Story 2, Simon Sez and The Sixth Sense is a weird combo I never expected in my life.
This is why I love bootlegs. You never know what will be before or after the actual bootleg.
I saw a video of a Nutty Professor 2 bootleg that had the Thomas and the Magic Railroad bootleg play at the end.
I hope to come across that very copy one day, but it will probably take a long while before that happens.
@@DozerDavisProductions what is the latest name bootleg tape you know of?
Also, what error labels are there besides New Line?
I’ve heard of bootleg VHS tapes of “The Incredibles” that exist that have the New Line Error label on it, if I remember correctly. I think it was the version that had horrible, HORRIBLE audio on it. I believe that most bootleggers went to DVD by 2004/2005, so other than that aforementioned title I haven’t heard of any other titles that came out that had bootleg VHS tapes. I know “Cars” had bootleg DVDs, but never a bootleg VHS as far as I recall.
@@DozerDavisProductions is there proof of a Incredibles bootleg tape?
I recall there was a opening of the tape online somewhere. I don’t know if it has been taken down or not, but it could be. But I know that an Incredibles bootleg tape does exist because I remember seeing the opening to it.
The cue marks from the film reminds me of the movie Fight Club. Specifically the scene where they spliced adult film footage into a kids film in the theater.
Gives me analog horror vibes without the horror part.
Tyler (Brad Pitt's character before the big reveal) called them cigarette burns. It's a pretty funny name to call them.
so just analog
@@ChaseMC215the cue marks used to be called cigarette burns.
My grandma had a machine that could copy VHS tapes. So you'd put the movie in one side and the blank tape in the other. Thats how we watched a lot of movies (especially Toy Story 2) at her house. We’d bring our tape from home and she’d make a copy to leave there.
You could have made a quick buck making bootlegs lol
I have an uncle that would get us VHS or DVD bootlegs just like this where it was literally a camera recording of a movie in a theater, except the difference here was that they were all made in Mexican theaters, and Mexicans are way more "expressive" than wherever this was made, so you could hear people roaring with laughter or babies crying or see people moving around in the recording 😂😂😂
They still sell bootlegs in big open markets, but I've never bought one in recent times. Back in the Napster and Limewire era, however, these theater recordings were pretty much phased out for torrented bootlegs. The most recent movie I got bootlegged was Megamind on DVD, and it played perfectly fine, but it was like a clearly 480p video file that was artificially rendered in 720p. Acceptable quality, audio was fine, but something was just off about it.
I have a bunch of these I got from thrift stores, The Grinch, Rush Hour, etc. And they do suck. Mainly because there's barely any audience reaction. And that's basically the only charming thing there is about a bootleg from 25 years ago. But like you said, they probably filmed these when there was next to nobody in the theater. Which would make sense, because doing this in the 90s, was a very serious crime back then. And they took it extremely seriously. Even imprisoning people for literal years, just for filming a crappy quality bootleg. Something that the cops would just laugh at a theater owner today. And honestly, most theater owners probably don't even care now, as long as you're not shooting up the place. And bootlegs as a whole is almost entirely extinct now because a) a lot of people don't even have DVD players anymore, let alone VCRs, b) movies have extremely short theatrical windows now, sometimes as little as 14 days before hitting streaming. So there's no reason to waste your time filming a crappy cam version, or buying one off the street, when you can watch the real thing in glorious 4K in just a few weeks time, and c) bootlegs go straight to 123 movies now. So why pay for something you can get for free online?
Agreed, considering that’s basically what has been happening for the past 3 years now. Plus, even at that most modern bootleg recordings are “tele-syncs” that grab the high quality audio via the hearing impaired track in the theater most of the time anyway. I mean, it’s been like that since the older days with VHS and all, in fact, several more bootlegs of _Toy Story 2_ exist that are explicitly tele-sync recordings. But otherwise, I haven’t watched any newer bootlegs because they’re not interesting anymore. However, if they are interesting, I will at least check it out briefly.
In my childhood, my parents had bootleg VCDs of films & later bootleg DVDs of films which I watched it for some reason. The only problem was that the credits were cut off!
Also everything gets leaked anyway
@@WinxAliNelCielo that was point C
I had a bootleg tape with the same case. The tape itself was different, though. IIRC, it was a direct capture, possibly from another tape, that was poorly dubbed over. Whenever a character spoke, the audio mutes, and you hear someone speak over the lines in Spanish.
They probably googled and got the cover from the same source these guys did lmao
I’ve seen ones from Serbia that do this with British retail tapes but they keep the English audio over the Serbian audio just goes right on top. The Cinderella one (and therefore the 1998 UK tape) has cue marks on it but it isn’t a theatrical source.
I remember seeing a Q mark on my bootleg copy of cars as a kid. It was after McQueen said “yes” from his attempt escape from radiator springs and before he discovers he is running out of gas
I can confirm that is a spot where a cue mark appears on the _Cars_ bootleg, as I have a digital copy of that bootleg somewhere and recall vividly seeing it placed there.
Was that the telesync with the "Marsha and Ron Barnes" interruption?
I think it is a rare CAM Copy of Toy Story 2.
These always intrigued me bootlegs are like the most interesting of media
Agreed, especially when those bootlegs have stuff like this where the bootleg itself is recycled three times over.
“There’s a snake in my boot-leg!”
I Was Cracking Up While Seeing This Bootleg VHS
i remember getting a lot of these bootleg movies as a kid. they were basically just a bunch of dvd-r discs with some cam-recorded video of it included in some menu made in windows dvd maker or something like that. ahh, the good old days...
Bootleg Triple Feature:
Toy Story 2
Simon Sez
The Sixth Sense
Those “black dots” that appear in the video are still very much a thing in movies today. I saw it last time I went back in 2018 as well
Well, in the world of 35mm (and 70mm, to an extent) they still exist because they need to indicate when the projectionist is supposed to switch the projector (in some cases). It isn’t a thing on digital because there’s no need to change reels since it’s a digital file. If anything, the “black dots” (cue marks) are definitely interesting to learn about, that’s for sure.
2:18 Regarding the cue mark in the “bye Woody” scene, I tend to imagine a scenario where the projectionist forgot to change the reel and the movie just ends there.
LOL
2:59 this is why this video is very underrated because of this one bit
honestly, i wish you got more views, the video is pretty funny af
What're you talking about? This VHS is how we all remember it.
(Jokes aside, keep up the good work! This was a very interesting video and it's frankly something that I've never seen done on YT)
Don't act like the first movie isn't a bootleg tself. Toy Story is based off all the other toy themed movies, but mostly Raggedy Ann & Andy. Like, they act like it's so original when it's inspired by existing movies.
Is This Bootleg Funny And Why? Also, Was Toy Story 2 Camcorded At The Theater?
A) The video explains all of the reasons why the bootleg is funny.
B) Because that’s how all bootlegs were made back in the day, they would bootleg them in theaters before they were released on home video officially
@@DozerDavisProductionspeople still do this
4:07 The Sixth Sense is a TRB since you could see people getting up
There also was a German bootleg VHS of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves made during the 80s.
“Mom, can we go see Toy Story 2 in theaters?”
Mom: “No, we have Toy Story 2 at home.”
The Toy Story 2 at home:
I love researching sh*tty bootlegs. They’re funny yet unsettling.
Rip this vhs and put it on internet archive so something. The footage of an actual 1999 theater recording of Toy Story 2 is a legendary find. Even if its not that noticeable its cool to see what Toy Story 2 might have looked like in a theater since it barley gets re-released from my knowledge. And also because its funni
I plan on ripping it once I finally get my hands on a capture card. It’s been something I’ve been needing to get for at least a long while now.
The one I’m trying to find is the one thats recorded from the 2010 DVD, macrovision completely fxcking the film up, all over a white matter disease documentary
Can you make a full opening or closing of this?
I plan on releasing those here soon. The opening has been prepared already, but the closing was recorded at a time where I only thought it ended at the blue screen, so the remainder of that closing isn’t on that recording. So, after I prepare both the opening/closing videos, it shall be uploaded.
@@DozerDavisProductions ok
Most of the bootlegs I see have the same style of cover and sticker label with the New Line logo. I was at an Antique store in November and saw plenty of them (and I've seen other bootlegs like that in the past also). Did whoever made these bootlegs have a New Line fetish or something?!🤣🤣🤣
I was the Music Archivist for this video!

This could likely be a snippet of End of Days
I believe you’re right because I think that girl is Robin Tunney
Reminds me of this Madagascar bootleg dvd I have somewhere. Again, it's just a literal cinema camrip with a basic menu.
I think I had this as a kid when my friend let me borrow it
There's a certain movie with a scene that talks about cue marks but I'm not supposed to talk about that movie
Corn movie?
This is insane! I found this exact same bootleg a few years ago at a thrift store, and it still sits under my TV to this day.
Cue marks. An almost seemless proceature. In the indestry we call these "cigarette burns". Or at least, tgat what Tyler Durden said in the film Fight Club.
1:33 the best movie ever 😂😂😂
the reason why the sound is so good is because it is a telesynced version
Technically, this is a “CAM” recording of the TS2 film that’s not being recorded with a telesync system, but regardless the sound is pretty alright for a bootleg vhs tape when compared to the majority of telesync tapes from around this same time. Hell, you can tell the quality difference from the actual VHS Opening/Closing video that I did for this tape, the sound transitions from a “CAM” audio to a “TELESYNC” audio recording of “End of Days” for a brief moment.
I own this bootleg of some Harry Potter movie where if you select one of the options on the menu the disc just fails to load completely and spits it out. It's as if the DVD player is stopping me!
I’ve seen some bootlegs that would do that for some reason, and I don’t know why they do that.
Hm?
It would it be an absolute dream-mare to own a theater recorded bootleg.
It looks like they got the movie decently copied so the kids still could experience the film. That's what I mainly care about
I have a "New Line" bootleg of Good Burger somewhere in my closet.
I SEEEE YOOOOOUUUUU
It felt like one triple feature.
This reminds me of the dude that had a bootleg of Back to the Future as a kid he would watch all the time with his sister which also had the last 30 minutes of Grease to end off the VHS
The Simon Sez bootleg on here was actually a bootleg Demo
I actually kinda thought it was going to be a demo considering the release date for its “VOD” release, at least according to IMDb, wasn’t until November 30th of 1999. There would’ve been no way that a TS2 bootleg would’ve been recorded in December, as most of the bootlegs would’ve already been recorded & released for distribution. A demo makes more sense to be featured here since it was made before TS2’s theatrical release debut.
@@DozerDavisProductions The Sixth Sense was released on 8/6/99
Yes it was released then, months before TS2 and a month before Simon Sez opened in theaters. It’s definitely odd seeing these films at the closing of the bootleg for sure.
@@DozerDavisProductions Simon Sez did get only a limited theatrical run on 9/24/99
I used to watch lots of pirated movies as a kid, but those were most likely ripped from official dvds and lacked any oddities like this.
As for the cue dots, I also used to watch lots of classic cartoons from 20s-60s on tv and saw cue dots in a few.
My ma supposedly bought a Toy Story 3 bootleg from Bali in the early 2000s that was just a low quality copy of that Star Command movie.
I've been told that it contained bomb schematics or something.
1:00 thats the goofiest horizontal logo i ever saw 😭😭 (also can you transform into something cuzz you said you are a transformer thing or something idk)
The thing i just said is a joke ;-;
this feels unreal
Any chance of getting this ripped to Google Drive and sending someone to archive it?
I am looking forward to buying a capture card at some point in order to rip the tape for archival purposes. I know it will happen someday.
@@DozerDavisProductionswhat if it gets copyrighted by Pixar?
There have been other bootlegs like this that have been archived, mostly it’s rare for Pixar to actually copyright them on sites like Internet Archive. RUclips isn’t a choice, you’d get taken down immediately.
Honestly would you rather get Toy Story 2 Bonus Features or the endings to both Simon Sez and Sixth Sense? ”It’s you’re choice Woody”
Tbh the bonus content featured on the VHS or the UTB is a lot cooler and “official” than getting the endings to two other feature film bootlegs. In my opinion, I’d go for the former since you can easily just get the DVDs/VHS tapes of said films elsewhere just to get the endings.
@@DozerDavisProductions As far as i’m aware the VHS and original DVD share bonus feature and since I own the original DVD I do want to own the bootleg more honestly.
Disney's PAL VHS tapes had warnings about buying cheap illegal pirated copies of their animated movies.
One of the earlier ones they did was funny to me too, for some reason. Must be because of the boy’s voice when he says his lines. _“MA, IT’S NO GOOD, DA PICTURE’S ALL BLURRY!”_
They also had a technique that whenever a tape was copied, the audio would go out of sync.
That bootleg is like a snake in a boot get it boot-legg
I found an exact copy of this bootleg tape at a charity sale, it was full of mold and needs to be cleaned sadly though. But, I couldn't pass up a New Line Cinema Toy Story tape.
3:47 back when Bruce Willis had hair and was still acting. Such a sad shame how his health is now.
WE ARE GONNA BE PIRATES WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
I really liked this video. Would be cool to see more like it, honestly!
I found a copy of this exact same VHS at an antique store late in 2022, so at least 3 copies of it exist. Do you know anything about the circumstances of its production like who made it, where it was sold, and if it's really worth thousands of dollars (or if that was just someone trying to pull a fast one on collectors)?
As of right now, I do not know about the actual origins of this tape (or the recording it originates from), however the tape itself was sent from a seller from New Jersey, so I’d assume it originates from there, but who knows. The listing that I saw years ago that went up for $1,000 or so (or more? I forgot the actual price but it was over exaggerated as “THE RAREST TOY STORY 2 VHS TAPE YOU WILL EVER FIND” or something like that) had a different, much more crappier looking, theater recording of the film on there, so in reality, where the tapes actually originate from is unknown to me. Speaking of which, the actual value of the tape varies by which seller is selling it. The one I got was $9 total with tax included, however I’ve seen others go up for higher prices before. To me, I don’t actually know the real value of the tape, as there are multiple versions of this tape with different recordings of the movie on it.
Mass sold bootleg?

1:34 I think I just had a seizure
I apologize if the tape has (allegedly) caused you to have any issues. I do have a useful tip for you if you just so happen to find this exact tape, however to help prevent this from happening again. If you rewind this portion quickly enough after the static roll and the cut to the WDP logo, you won’t see the static roll appear on screen, just a jump cut to the WDP logo from the IndependentArtists films logo from the cut Simon Sez trailer. As for that static roll itself, don’t blame me for it, blame the bootlegger. Again, I’m sorry about that alone.
@@DozerDavisProductions your fine, like you said, Blame the bootlegger
(Sigh) Lucky, I’ve never found any bootlegs lately sadly, can you help me find some?
BTW, I bought a bootleg of this a long time ago, that was $0.99 but it never shipped so I cancelled the order
A useful tip to buying bootlegs is by using the term: “alternative cover artwork”. Or, at least something similar to it. There, you can find some bootlegs. Last time I checked, a bootleg of “The Lion King” was on there when searching that term.
@@DozerDavisProductions I have a bootleg of The Lion King which I got for $5 and actually shipped

Maybe this was made by the same bootleggers who put Thomas and the Magic Railroad on after The Nutty Professor 2 bootleg.
It has to be them. No other kind of bootlegging group would do that kind of stunt but the people who did that NP2 bootleg.
I think your copy is either a telecine or telesync
Actually, it isn’t either of those. This recording is a “CAM” recording, which is a bootleg recording of the film that uses the camera microphone rather than the speakers coming from the projector and/or radio receiver, like telesync recordings are like. It isn’t a telecine either, those are direct scans from a 35mm feature print with the analog audio.

I’m sure it will be worse, all bootleg vhs tapes look bad in some regard. I remember a video for a “Dr. Dolittle” bootleg that looked like shit.
@@DozerDavisProductions I got a Toy Story 2 bootleg vhs as well and the cover is so bad it’s hilarious, and the quality looks to be worse than this one
Does it have the telesync recording? I remember that one looked like shit. Or is it a new recording that looks even more like shit than the other bootlegs?
@@DozerDavisProductions the tape is also a telesync but the audio is very thin sounding and this one plays the movie straight away, plus you can see people getting up and down
Considering that there are people getting up and down on your tape, that definitely means that your copy is definitely the telesync version, unless it’s another version of the telesync recording that exists. It’s still interesting to find though, I initially thought that recording would be on my copy until I discovered that it wasn’t and it ended up being a rare cam recording instead, which is still cool regardless.
