  • Thank you to MidWest Moto for the borrowing of these two bikes both of which are 'demo' models that you can come a ride back to back. The question is which of these bikes is more suitable for you. One is lighter and cheaper and the other has much more power and technology but comes at a cost. Both Cabelleros are styled beautifully and will definitely draw looks out and about... Please do let me know what you think in the comments.

Man it's getting hard to choose a new bike these days. So many good choices on offer. The Fantic 700 is another class of bike compared to the 400s, Ninja, KTMs, Triumphs, but the CP2 motor is a really good one. With the improvements to the dash information,(I like to have a better idea how much fuel I have), I lean more towards the Fantic 700, but really, the 500 seems a treat to. I need to buy a farm with a lot of shed space.

I've ridden 15,000 kilometres on my 500 Fast Track around the hills and mountains of Portugal and my verdict? It's a masterpiece. Yes, I'm exaggerating a little, but it's an absolute blast, so much fun, and I just couldn't think of ever selling it. It's just too good. The lead broquet I added to the fuel tank, to enrich the fuel, makes it sharper, and I've added heated grips and a radiator cover.

Regarding "fit and finish" on the 500 At 5.22. I cannot say I,m too impressed with the rusted screws heads considering its a new bike... The speedo ,,, Honestly it would be no good for me,,, I would have to put on my glasses to see whats what (same with the 700..) I much prefer the speedo fuel gauge etc on my Himalayan and its alot cheaper.. lasty the exhaust on the 500,,I dislike it alot ,it goes a full circle then out though the frame and the slip on,s look cheap...goes for both bikes.. Honestly I think the 700 is too pricey but its probably a nice bike to ride,, and I think the 500 you can get better value elsewear.. err maybe the BSA or the 650 Enfield....

I rode the 500 on a group test for an online publication a couple of years ago and it was an absolute blast. You are correct, in my opinion, about the clock as it was too small for my eyes. The fit and finish of the bike was excellent on the one I rode and indeed it was impressively so. The screw heads on this one may be an anolmoly but far from being unique in todays market. There was a Himalayan on that same group test, which we did in Croatia ,and with a lot of trail riding in it. I really wanted to like the RE and I did but in the final summing up it is let down by its lack of get and up go. The Fantic 500 is not a powerful bike on paper but it was far more capable than the Himalayan was of getting through anything even resembling non paved surfaces, and generally more fun. As I say I do like the Himalayan but it is definitely more of an example of form over function with its pseudo dual trail styling, and is at its best when purely kept on the road.
