No doubt. If you haven't heard Mick and Dan singing with Mary Spender, check that episode out. They all sound great. ruclips.net/video/6jvD1SiF4SY/видео.html
Mick you really are not alone in your struggle with depression. Really appreciate you being so open about it. Also it takes a lot to show your demos warts and all for us all. It was great to meet you at the Birmingham guitar show. I've been after a Strat since hearing you play live. Keep up the good work, it's much appreciated and your videos help us through our struggles. All the best, Gareth.
Mick, I’m a military vet and now a psychiatric nurse in the states. I want you to know I’ve always appreciated your videos reviews podcasts etc etc you’ve always come across as a very confident and skilled player and presenter. However, I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability in the beginning of this re your depression more than anything else you’ve done. Keep playing. Cheers.
Thank you John, much appreciated. I guess you know better than most how important it is for us to be talking about this stuff. I appreciate that I’m not going to change the world, but I figure it’s probably the right thing to do to use this platform where we can. Thank you for the work you do sir. :0)
And you S. Weirdly I’m finding the pace of lockdown a bit more conducive to better mental health. So much less pressure than my usual life! Maybe there’s a lesson here. ;0)
@@ThatPedalShow Hi Mick, yes that is so true what you are saying. I have been in lock down for my 4th week now and have been enjoying the time to unwind and reflect on what life is for me and where do I want to go after this crisis has passed. Although, I know that we are not all so lucky. Some people are having more mental health difficulties during this time, esp those alone. I too understand the "Black Dog" and how you can get sucked into a black hole even being in paradise. My birthday is in March too! I enjoy your shows, both you and Dan! Look forward to seeing you guys back in the studio together. Take care, Steph
Mick, you look like you're really having fun, even when you're just talking about programming drum hits. That's one of the things I love about writing and recording at home - when it's going well, it's a really edifying, enjoyable experience. Great to see you engaging with the music and expressing yourself. Also - I think the way you explain how the drums were done is a great description of process and workflow in DAWs for musicians (particularly guitarists) who are familiar with song writing, but unfamiliar with DAWs. Great stuff!
Thanks Nathan. It doesn’t come naturally to me, the whole interface thing. But when I’m in it I’m in it and //really/ enjoy the focus of being lost in it. Cheers geez!
You can also use the same trick with things like the hi-hats. Have multiple samples up and switch between them as no drummer hits the hats exactly the same way each time. They will also not hit them in the same place relative to the beat throughout the measure. Most often there's a pumping thing going on. e.g. Steve Jordan. Leaning forward on 1 and 3 and back on 2 and 4. In some drum machines there is a "swing function" that does this, but each drummer has a different way of displacing each drum in a pattern.
I understand you about all you describe about mental health ! I have the same problems and you can be very proud about all you do Mick ! Take care...kindest regards from France
Mick, I have to honestly say, that first snip of your tune with acoustic and vocals (around 5min mark) gave me full body chills. The one and only reason, is you captured what every genuine, and great song, and musician has in common: raw emotion. I’ve got similar issues mate, but I felt a very real mick right there and could really relate and see a common humanity. Pretty special. Now I’ll finish the video! Best of wishes
Fantastic insight into the songwriting process. I'm a singer-songwriter first and electric guitar comes a fair way down in terms of my skill set. That said, your show has encouraged me to use it more and more as a writing tool. I know the struggles of depression and really appreciate your honesty, openess and truth in discussing your own struggle. TPS and the content you and Dan are creating is helping to keep my spirits up in lockdown so bless you for that! Thanks again, can't wait for the full song to take shape :)
These types of videos are my favorites. I love to see the process as well as how much both of you enjoy getting into it. Thanks for brightening the week.
Love it, Mick. You have a lovely singing voice - it can be tough to sing “on-screen”, and it really helped understand where the track is heading. I’m two tracks into my Coronavirus EP, and loving the “no excuse not to make music” that this has provided (silver linings, for sure). So happy that you’ve emerged from your cloud and learned some strategies to stay balanced. Thank you!
Lots of what we hear from singers is heavily overproduced or sitting too much in the mix. Its kinda like listening to guitar from record and then stand in front of 4x12 with gunned Marshall ...
I’m not talking about the sound quality or intonation. I think reknown artist have a style/character already developed when they release a record, but “regular” people have a certain honesty in their tone that we all can relate. It’s hard to explain.
Thanks for sharing something really personal Mick! I wish you al the best with this struggle in your life. We all have our struggles. Music truly is one of those things that lift us. Thanks for all you do. Been enjoying the show for many years now! You guys are an inspiration.
Thanks for being brave enough to share about depression, many of us wrestle with that, helpful to know we’re not alone! Ana thanks much for the really helpful tips on songwriting and arranging!
Fascinating. I share your appreciation of drums as a guitar player, Mick. They are so important for the structure, feel and texture of a track. A truly “orchestral” instrument in that sense.
I found that my song structure writing actually improved when I learned to play drums. Some songs I've even started with the drums, which then led to an idea. I've learned there's so much dynamics in the drums, and the drums can play a harmonic/melodic role of sorts too. I know not everyone has the access, but if you can I highly suggest learning the drums. Also I find drums to be really good for depression. There's something about focusing on a groove that just makes everything go away. And it's physical, so after drumming for a couple hours I'm feeling good from all the energy I just let out, I can let out frustration too, and I can clear my head. And I love being able to jump into a song without knowing the chords or key or any of that.
Rapidly finishing off my dissertation waiting to receive my ward posting since I've joined the emergency nursing register. Just like you have helped me through the last 4 years through a rough patch of depression and a total career path change into nursing, TPS is helping me relax and prepare for a tough time. Thanks as always.
I love this! Your melodic ideas, layering of guitars, and basic tracks sound really good. I'm looking forward to following this blog and hearing the final outcome. Great work Mick!
Thanks Mick, it's really positive hearing your experiences and approach in a truthful way. These vlogs by yourself and Dan and the other talented creators (looking at you Bea) really highlight the horses for courses element of music creation and positivity it can bring in times like these just by working on something one enjoys.
Hugs to you Mick. Great thanks for sharing your story with us. Many don't understand; there are those of us that do. You're never alone and I hope life stays bright longer. Always reach out to everyone and anyone, if God forbid, it happens again.
Thank you! Same to you man, or woman! I found some things that have helped me get on top of it. But I stay on guard. Sending you every good vibe I have.
Hi Mick--I love your show so much, and appreciate your and Dan's willingness to share your musical knowledge right alongside everything else. Awesome--thanks for doing it.
As much as your regular episodes give me joy to my daily routine, this was much appreciated. I love how vulnerable and intimate this is. Thank you for keeping us posted about your mental health. Happy you're happier :) Btw the song is absolutely wonderful ! Not a bad thing it sounds like Coldplay. Great job man, much love from Canada
Sounding great so far, Mick. Loved seeing your enthusiasm and excitement for the process. This type of focus definitely helps us be in the now. Thanks for sharing.
Firstly, kudos to you for being open about your mental health and I am so pleased to hear you are in a good place right now. Really looking forward to seeing this vlog (and Dan’s) evolve - I programme drums in the exact same way as you! Reassuring that I’m probably vaguely on the right track... Thanks to everyone involved at TPS for all the inspiration 🙌
I found this very helpful and inspiring, both from a mental health point of view and for someone starting out writing and recording songs. Thank you for all you do and please keep it up!
This is AWESOME Mick!!! Well done on the drum programming, I like how it feels alive and so real. I knew that sandbox of guitar tone was for a reason. Cant wait for the rest and finished product. Keep creating and keep being an amazing human. Cheers!!!!
2019 was a tough year for me and it took a while to realize I was in a nose dive. I worked to come out of it toward the end of the year and was feeling pretty good about 2020. Guess that work was training for this year 😲 All things TPS have been great enjoyment over the years and especially during these times. Many thanks! Keep well!
That is gorgeous mate and so brave mate. As a fellow musician I know we're all our worst critics. Major props for getting this out there and take care of you and your's. Thanks for sharing. It is an inspiration. Sincerely Mark
Mick you are such an inspiration. I deal with how I see or hear myself. Until recently I've always tried to build my guitar tone around what I think other people want to hear, not so much what I want to hear. It has led to being stressed about playing every show we do. In turn leads to a mild depressio3 wondering if anyone liked how I sounded. I know it sounds egotistical to want everyone to like how I sound, but it got to the point where I cared more about how I sound than how I good I play. I'm working on it right now during this down time by doing the same thing, some basic song writing and recording. It has made me want to get better hearing myself. Plus write my own songs makes me come up with my own sound. I know it's long winded but, thank you both Mick and Dan for being an inspiration. Keep it up.
Hello! If I may, please check out a book by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga called The Courage To Be Disliked. It’s a reading of Adlerian psychology in a super easy way. After my existential crisis it has been a fundamental help in dealing with //exactly// what you’re describing. Give it a go? Wishing you the best!
Really superb start to what will be a great track Mick. The lead tone you briefly played was thick, lush and of course complete with the Mick Motif licks. 🙏🏻💚
That's for sharing Mick. My old band wrote some songs in the late 2000's and worked on them in a rented non climate controlled storage unit in South Texas (yes, the heat is BRUTAL down there). We were just a group of friends that got together to have fun and create music but never got an opportunity to get a quality recording of our songs. Fast forward to today, I just finalized my very small "studio" set up and purchased an Iridium for recording my guitar (with my pedals) and Bitwig as my DAW to create a quality recording of those songs. Looking forward to more recording tips! Cheers!
Al S good luck Al. Did the same here in N Texas, but in early 90s. Would love to get them recorded (some re-recorded). Unfortunately, our singer recently passed away. Way too young (50).
Thank you for being brave enough to put out your "bare bones". That by itself is an act of courage, and it's very inspiring. Thanks so much - looking forward to more.
Thank you Tom. I’ve done a lot of work on not worrying about what other people think and it’s making me a more at peace person with a bit more creativity. My hope is that it inspires some other people to just let it go and get it out there! Thank you for the kind words!
During all this time you have been an amazing artist and only now you’ve remembered to let us know..!!? That’s cheating 😎 That’s beautiful Michael ..congratulations
Mick this vlog is so inspiring! Definitely helps my cabin fever. Not to harp on the depression part, but sometimes in our "dips" or episodes, we can find a piece of music in us that can pull us out...even if it's just for a moment. The melody you found is beautiful. I've heard you sing a bit through the years and always found it soothing! Thank you for posting this vlog and for all you and Dan do for we (us?) TPS fans. I hope everyone is safe+sound and hanging in there. Cheers from the States🎸
It's going to be a lovely song Mick! Glad to hear that you are out of the low point and kudos to you for talking about it as well. Good luck with the rest of the recording. Stay safe, be well!
Ah, it’s all good. It’s good to be disliked, as I’m learning in my studies. In fact one of the sources of my downs were being disliked online. Totally an ego problem. When you turn it upside down and realise the real problem is with the person doing the disliking, anger and self doubt turns into empathy for the other person. I sound like a massive high and mighty hippie, sorry. But it has been a fundamental change that started back there in Spain in 2019. Have to thank Ed O Brien for the wake up call too!
@@ThatPedalShow Our stories aren't that different, save for the fact that I didn't care what people thought; think of as the same chord, different inversion! :-)
@@ThatPedalShow - of all the things I've learned from your channel, this has probably been the most useful. Mick, you once responded to a troll in one of the VCQs by saying you hope that whatever it is in his life that compels him to engage with people like that gets better. Since then, I have responded to similar situations in a similar way. Not only does it usually stop the trolling behavior, but moreover, I actually mean it.
Your rough first introduction to the song - just vocals and guitar through the overhead mic was amazing to my ears. Even if the song isn’t finished yet it was performed with a authentic and unique style and feel which I like a lot and which you may can capture on the recording. Thanks for the video I am so exited to see how it comes out at the end.
Brilliant Mick, thanks. Currently trying to get a little set up working at home and drums have been a big question mark for me. I've really been enjoying Dan's Vlogs and yours is now another great source of knowledge and inspiration. The guitar tones at the end are gorgeous! Keep um coming please! Cheers for now, Pete
You have a great voice and excellent note choice. Just from the little acoustic bits you played I got the feeling you could make an amazing acoustic album. Heartfelt and raw. Just beautiful. And song's not even finished yet
I've been super down during this whole thing, I'm halfway thru week 4 of Stay At Home. I'm working from home 5 days a week (thankful to still have a job), but my weekends are the toughest. If it wasn't for my Strat, I literally don't know where I'd be and I don't really WANT to know where I'd be without it. Keep your chin up, Mick. Keep making them, we'll keep watching them.
as someone who has the same struggles, it takes a large amount of courage to even have the conversation with someone in private let alone on you tube for the world to be a part of. Beyond that the video was very uplifting, inspiring and as usual, very informative. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Wendell. I’ve always been a gobshite if you’ll pardon the expression. It was actually Dan who convinced me to start talking about. Once I had the convo with the missus in Spain, it was all a bit easier from there. All best to you sir.
thanks for being so open about this. I had no idea. Having some issues in my family myself, I can fully relate and happy to see someone talk openly about mental health. My own last low point was March 2019 too. Hang in there! 💪👍
great story and thank you for sharing this and showing us your process of tracking with drums and bass. cool tricks on the bass. love the progression. keep up the great work and keep safe...
Thanks so much, Mick. You inspire me to start recording my ideas instead of buying even more equipment... especially in times like these we need to focus on the important things. Regards from Germany!
My dad loved this. He says drum programming is boring as well so he finds a good midi of a song with a similar beat and imports it as a groove into BFD3. Then he makes edits to that. When recording if it’s an intricate piece he says he slows down the tempo to about half tempo of the song and plays it in time to,the kick drum
Mick, I love this stuff and I'm so glad you and Dan are coming at it from slightly different angles. It's really interesting to see the different mindsets and to watch the ideas in action. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Sean! Yeah, Dan is probably the creative between us when it comes to music, but it’s all good. Simple and straightforward has always been my way. Born To Be Mild. Hahahahaha!!!
@@ThatPedalShow Aaah, I dont know. Sometimes there's a great beauty in simplicity. I think those differences are also part of why you and Dan are so enjoyable to watch.
Thanks Mick for being open about depression..I have had depression since childhood and I have been open about it and some people are not that receptive and treat you like a freak or that something is wrong with you..but anyway like you , music really helps me..I am mainly a drummer but I do play guitar and it really helps, music has a power to heal as corny as that sounds...it definitely makes life better..anyway I love your channel and you are not alone...take care and I look forward to more content from you and Daniel.
Thanks Todd. We're fortunate to be in a time where awareness of mental health is so much better than it was. But sure, some people really really really don't want to hear about. Please just know that that is THEIR problem, not yours. Wishing you the best dood!
@@ThatPedalShow I wish you the best too dood..I love that lyric you wrote um I think it was "I am halfway empty, all the way blue" something like that...it is great.
Very cool to see the creative process unfold. It's always interesting to hear where the inception of a song comes from, positive or negative. The real journey is turning that moment into a positive for everyone via music. Cheers from a total novice, but fan of all things TPS, from Michigan!

Just awesome Mick! Looking forward to your fuzz effects going down 👍🏻☺️
Really superb start to what will be a great track Mick. The lead tone you briefly played was thick, lush and of course complete with the Mick Motif licks. 🙏🏻💚
Thank you!
Inspiring, thanks for going to the effort and sharing that Mick 🔥🔥🔥👍🙏
Thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
Mick you sing as well as you play guitar....so jealous bro! Really enjoying seeing this process and song come to life.
Sounds like we’re in for a really beautiful song! Can’t wait!
That’s cheating 😎
That’s beautiful Michael ..congratulations
Ah man, thank you.
Thanks Drew - please harp on all you want! Cheers geezer!
the raw tone from 22:00 was amazing, the whole video is great tbh! it's not easy opening up emotionally and artistically, well done mick :)
It's going to be a lovely song Mick! Glad to hear that you are out of the low point and kudos to you for talking about it as well.
Good luck with the rest of the recording. Stay safe, be well!
I like it. Always great to hear what folks are recording.. look forward to the next instalment.
I wonder, who disliked Mick's story that much that they felt "I know, a thumb's down is what's needed here"?!?
Ah, it’s all good. It’s good to be disliked, as I’m learning in my studies. In fact one of the sources of my downs were being disliked online. Totally an ego problem. When you turn it upside down and realise the real problem is with the person doing the disliking, anger and self doubt turns into empathy for the other person. I sound like a massive high and mighty hippie, sorry. But it has been a fundamental change that started back there in Spain in 2019. Have to thank Ed O Brien for the wake up call too!
That Pedal Show that’s a good way to think about it
@@ThatPedalShow Our stories aren't that different, save for the fact that I didn't care what people thought; think of as the same chord, different inversion! :-)
Here Mick. Have a thumbs down. Turned the right way round!
(Sorry. It just came to mind and I couldn’t resist 😂)
Not only does it usually stop the trolling behavior, but moreover, I actually mean it.
this is AMAZING, I can wait to see recording guitars, great tune, cannot wait for listen the whole song!!!!
Great stuff, Mick! Thanks for bringing us along :)
Exactly what I was looking for amidst the quarantine. Pleasantly surprised and touched by your story too!
Thanks from across the pond, Mick!
Thank you Tom!
Looking forward to hearing the finished track. Cheers Mick.
Stunning bro. Thanks for sharing your story as well.
Awesome Mick, love the recording/ songwritting vlogs. TPS is getting more and more great content.
You have a great voice and excellent note choice. Just from the little acoustic bits you played I got the feeling you could make an amazing acoustic album. Heartfelt and raw. Just beautiful. And song's not even finished yet
Thank you sir!
Happy Easter Mick!
May we soon rise again also!
Ha! Sure thang. I was recording today. A little bit risey.
All best to you Joe, and sorry to hear you’re struggling mate. Strat’s the way to do it! ;0)
Good stuff Mick. I love your song and want to hear the final product when you are finished. Be safe.
as someone who has the same struggles, it takes a large amount of courage to even have the conversation with someone in private let alone on you tube for the world to be a part of.
This was awesome! And definitely echoing the sentiment that your voice sounds really nice Mick!
thanks for being so open about this. I had no idea. Having some issues in my family myself, I can fully relate and happy to see someone talk openly about mental health. My own last low point was March 2019 too. Hang in there! 💪👍
Hey Christophe. Getting it out in the open is so important as and when you’re ready. Sending you the best!
@@ThatPedalShow couldn't agree more! take care
great story and thank you for sharing this and showing us your process of tracking with drums and bass. cool tricks on the bass. love the progression. keep up the great work and keep safe...
More of this... tons more of this please!
Cant wait for the next instalment Sounding lush already keep up the good work!
Wow Mick. Can’t wait to hear more. Loved the “stereo loads of reverb” guitar part!
Really nice Mick! I’ll have your tune stuck in my head all day, and that’s a good thing.
Hooray!
Very inspiring video. Thanks, Mick.
That’s sounding catchy as heck already Mick, looking forward to the finished product!!
Thanks for sharing. Great video..and killer tones at the end!
Very cool to see the creative process unfold. It's always interesting to hear where the inception of a song comes from, positive or negative. The real journey is turning that moment into a positive for everyone via music. Cheers from a total novice, but fan of all things TPS, from Michigan!
