I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

Just got Element Bass and within 15 minutes it had transformed my bass tone on a song I've been agonizing over for weeks. Now everything sounds so much better!
I love how everyone that hears my mixes are like "I CAN HEAR THE BASS OMG!"
MORE BASS CONTENT PLEASE GLENN!
MORE BASS CONTENT PLEASE Please Please…..
Bass is absolutely the most overlooked instrument in the band. Imagine TOOL with a lackluster bassist.
Or Iron Maiden or Motörhead.
Or Death
I mean, it depends on the band, right. As much of an injustice was the way Metallica treated Jason, AJFA has that iconic dry heavy sound.
@@DM-rc4yu and justice for all's "iconic" crappy sound you mean?
or Primus
Very brave of Glenn to make a bass plugin that requires them to learn how to use an eq. He’s really out here encouraging us to think for once 🖤
What’s EQ stand for ???? What does RTV stand for ????? Why am I standing on RxR tracks ?????
@@gilbertspader7974EQ stands for Ego Quashing, THEY'RE TRYING TO GET RID OF US!!!!!
Sounds awesome!
I’m a bass player and I love all your trolling of bass players. You had a hilariously offensive t-shirt relating to bass players once upon a time. This is a very clever bass plugin btw.
I still have the shirt. We’re just allowed to say that in RUclips anymore. What a bunch of dicks!
@@SpectreSoundStudiosCan we still get the rule #2 shirts, Glenn? I'd love to bag one.
As a professional bassist in Jazz and R&B, but started as a guitarist in heavy music I loved as a kid; having just (unofficially) joined an amazing Death metal band Avé Inanis, as well as in the writing process of a new, heavier EP with my bestfriend Samiah; this is EXACTLY what I need man! You're always excellent in your approach and I appreciate all you do for clearing out the bullshit from our "perfect" ears 🤣 can't wait to add this to my bass tone!
I love the metalocalypse support, brutal! 🤘🏻
Such a great show, hahaha.
Thank you Glen. Have been waiting for this video and you didn’t dissapoint. This preset is just killer. You and everyone at Spectre Digital did an outstanding job. Can't wait to hear more mixes an appriciate the butal beauty of this Bass tone. Rock on Glen
YEEEEEESSSS!!!! Thank you Glenn, I was literally (not figuratively, literally) seconds away from pulling the trigger on NDSP Parallax when I got your e-mail. This looks like it does everything I've been missing from Parallax! Instant purchase!
Congratulations Glennn!! Weve been waiting for this 🔥
Sold! I have struggled so much to get a good bass tone on my Helix, making me feel like an idiot. I have had no problems with getting my guitar tones there but bass? Way harder for me at least. Thanks Glenn!
You’re very welcome! Enjoy!
@@SpectreSoundStudios4 months later and having just watched your video on using programed drums correctly I’m finally getting mixes I like. Thanks to your advice I finally found a unique guitar sound by using a Sunn amp and cab for half the tracks and an Orange Rockaverb with Greenbacks for the other half. Between that, the bass plug-in (which I’m using unless I need a fuzz sound) and the drums that finally sound realistic, I feel like I’m getting somewhere. Thank you Glenn.
Been wanting a Bass rig, but for $100 hot damn this is a steal for the home recording enthusiast. Why do you gotta keep pushing these amazing products to us Glenn!
Nice! Wish I had this a decade ago when I struggled getting a good bass tone in mixes that had barely any tone in it. Great plug-in! Good job Glenn and crew! Can’t afford it now, but in my signal chain it’s like it combines 3-4 plugins I’ll reach for: amp sim, distortion, sub synth, and eq. Neural dsp has to watch out for spectre digital!
One of my favorite bands, Billy Talent, made me believe the guitar had a LOT more bass in it than it really does, because the way they play together and are mixed together makes them feel like one hugely fat instrument and it's so damn good.
I loved this band so much growing up damn
Prisoners of today is my favorite
Now where did the name, "Billy Talent" come from? :)
That was the same guitar and bass paradigm for Weezer's blue album. It's cool when the bass and guitar play together.
Hard Core Logo @@SpectreSoundStudios
As a guitar player, I approve this with enthusiasm. Bass (and drums) are the foundation of any good band.
Bought it based on this video, it is every bit as good as advertised. I've tried many of the bass amp sims over time, and they always came close, but needed something else to get there. Element is your one stop bass shop.
Vision of Disorder's "From Bliss to Devestation" is a good example of this. The bass make ALL the difference, it's just brutal but it also is highly musical with a hard to pin bottom end, which it wouldn't be without the bassist in that mix.
Holy crap dude made the perfet hybrid between Parallax and Mammoth. Like a dream come true. Each one has something missing from the other, the void has been filled. I need to grab this ASAP !
First of all: Great Plugin, it's already able to create a heavy Bass Tone with one single Plugin, just as advertised.
I do have a small number of feature requests though:
- A Master EQ: Basically just the same EQ again on the Master, to quickly tweak a tone you are already happy with.
- Gate on a per Channel Basis: The Gate works, but on a 3 channel patch with different drive levels i would like to gate the more distorted channels more agressively than the more mellow channels.
- A transient Designer: on the modern channel, a one knob transient Shaper that gives you sustain on the left (for fuzzy/grindy sounds) and short drive spikes on the right for extra percussive sounds.
Bass literally defines the way genres feel and sound.
“The bassist is like a pilot of an airplane. If the bassist crashes, everyone crashes.” - Cliff Burton
I think it was bus and they all did indeed crash
The Bass tone sounds awesome in the Plugin. Maybe you should talk to Josh at JHS Pedals about making a Pedal to deliver those tones live.
Hey that's a great idea.
It’s any Darkglass pedal.
@@adamphillips6747Yeah but JHS would probably charge a third of the price
Finally someone gets it. I was a bass player for a long time and hated how my performance would just get buried in the end result. I have a record from 10 years that sounds good, but man it would sound even better if there was more bottom end. Definitely will need to get this plugin.
Really diggin the EQ nice and big on the interface. It makes sense.
That's why Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden are one of my favorite bands. Because Geezer and Steve have one of the greatest bass tones ever.
Oh my god Geezer is one of the all time great rock bassists but I have always FUCKING HATED his bass tone. Sounds like a wet fish floppin around. But man he could play.
Wohooo.. being a bassist and also the bands recording guy.. I'm so happy right now. This plugin will definitely help to dial in an amazing bass sound for our records, and save me hours placing and shifting the mics on my cabs, while also dealing with 2 DI signals (dry and after the pedals).
I just got an awesome bass tone with a kick drum mic 1 foot in front of the speaker. Thanks to Glenn.🤔🍻
Hell Yeah!!! Finally the wait is over!!! Can't wait to get my hands on this. Thx Glenn!!!
Absolutely love it. Going to head straight over and buy it. I'm going to use it for live music and see how it's received.
I imagine being a really astute bass player who can just turn up and play once you know the key is statistically the best way to be in a successful band.
I don't know the key but I know when I'm out of it. When me and the boys are jamming and really feeling it, I can go in/out of key strategically. It's a special feeling
@@saulgoodman.exe_ oh yeah it's not everything. It's more that if a bass player knows key and scales, you can say to them " this is in e minor, jam along till you find what you want to play".. which tends to get memorised a lot better, and is much more efficient than reminding him of the route notes on every track, for the 40th time, because he couldn't be bothered to learn to the tab you wrote out.
Ear training is key... I've been the bassist in bands before, and believe me... my ear training is what helped me most, and knowing the fretboard
Real. I get random people messaging me on Facebook asking if I can play bass in their band.
If you're a somewhat competent bassist it's harder to not be in a band than it is to join a band.
@@DarthCiliatus Tell people you can play a Primus song and you're in. I can get through a few easier ones but slapping is a deficiency for me. I make up for it with 3 finger technique.
Point is that, yes playing bass is indeed the easiest gig to get.
Congratulations on the release, Glenn, and a major thank you!!
Bass is the foundation of rock, metal, rap, and a whole lot more
Literally almost every genre
So want this... Not gonna be able to get it this weekend with Christmas coming up, but it'll be worth it, and floating Glenn and the gang a few extra duckets is not a problem. Thanks Glenn. This will help get me to that dUg Pinnick type tone I've been chasing since the mid-80's.
An old music teacher of mine used to say that drums and bass are like the foundation and roof of a house. Doesn’t matter how fancy is the house in between, if the roof and foundation leaks, you have a house full of water. Same with a song.
Glenn, I have been asking about this plug-in for months upon months now. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! This is exactly what I’ve been wanting and needing! Best early Christmas gifts ever!
We are finally getting some bass love! Thank you very much, Glenn! This cleared a LOT up for me. I've been struggling to find proper bass tone inside high gain sound environment. This pro tip really means a lot!
Glad to help! Hopefully you grab a copy & start getting results!
Just got the plugin, I absolutely ADORE it!!! Thanks glenn!!!
Glad you’re loving it! Go get a killer mix!
having 3 tracks (low end, clank, and ampy distortion) for bass is what ive been doing for years on the advice of Kristian Khole. Cool someone made a standalone plugin that can do that without having the split it into 3 tracks and make a bus and all that
There's a band I used to play drums for and because of me we went through a few bassists due to the fact they couldn't even lock in with me as the drummer.
I also play bass and guitar and have had to step up and re-track the bass parts.
Now that I've tooted my own horn, Element is mind blowing.
Picked this up and loving it so far. I had a song I was working on and was happy enough with the bass tone. Decided to duplicate the track, disable the 7(!) plugins I had used to get the original tone and drop this in so I could A-B it. It's immediately better, and this isn't even a metal song. This works just as well for clean tones.
Exactly! Its not meant just for metal songs! Any genre of music it can do!
@@alexnasla Thanks for the very quick help getting it running, too. Customer support is also excellent 👌
I’m lucky that my UA Apollo came with an amazing bass amp simulator from Ampeg. If there’s one thing that Glenn has complimented my shitty mix with, it was the bass. Between the Ampeg bass amp sim and the API channel simulator, it’s made my bass sound great and easy to dial in.
Having seen Muse (repeatedly) and Queens of the Stone Age this year, I can attest to the fact that great bass tone means a huge sound. Both bands are rock but sound massive compared to almost every metal band I've seen over the years.
Yup..I was the bass player in a Muse tribute act for 6 years....my live rig was insane to get those tones... But soooo much fun
*Hysteria intensifies*
I know we make a lot of fun of bassists, but honestly if it’s done well it can take a track into the stratosphere. I’ve really been listening to a lot of Parkway Drive and While She Sleeps lately and the way those guys hit the low notes is insane. Aaran and Pie (Jia) are two of my favourite musicians :)
I like how it adds the low mid and high mid so you don’t need a separate parametric EQ. Also I like the added compressor so you may not need the compressor bus. Notice the deep cut around 500 to leave room for guitar.
Thank you Glenn. Been waiting for this one. Appreciate all you do for us. 😘
Thanks for the walk through Glenn! I'm gonna check this out
Just picked up the both of them. I’ve been waiting for a deal on the singularity but to have element too… I think my bass mixes will be the Shizzle now!! Can’t wait to get to my studio and try it.
As a bassist who changes his strings, I am happy to hear you give us some love.
I do have the GK bass sim, since I play a GK irl and it's so much easier to mess with it in the box. I am quite interested in your sim as well.
More Bass content Glen, we need you
Glad to see your channel give love to the Bass, would love to see more bass talk and gear on here 🤘
I love how simple you made this for us bass players; you're doing the Lord's work, Glenn.
I have a more unusual approach to the bass. Since it’s just 1 guitar, bass and drums, sometimes when our guitar player took a solo, it would sound kinda weird with him on a high register and me with low end. What we do now to get our more unique sound is that we make the guitar almost the same volume as the guitar (a little quieter) I play through guitar amps(that’s all I had at the time) and I add a little bit of drive and a little bit of reverb, then I do typical bass lines but when a guitar solo comes I play chords or play the line/chords an octave up to beef up the sound more. Also I have my mids 10, treble 5 and bass 4. It’s worked and we even started affine more lead bass and harmonizing the bass with the guitar. It’s not for everyone but we love it. 🤘
That sounds sooooo much better that a DI bass. I never really understood why DI'ing the bass was a thing anyway. I love a killer bass stack. I'm old school and an Ampeg SVT just kills it for me. Between that and guitars trying to get as low as possible which buries a weak bass even more. Bass has been missing in mixes for far too long. Great job Glen!!!
Thanks for championing the needs of bassists (or at least those who actually care about their tone!).
Whilst playing in tune, in time and with clarity are crucial, too often producers overlook the importance of great bass tone.
This software looks great and the ability to blend the fundamental bass tone, clank and attack is genius.
Just need to invent a studio door that only opens when a bassist arrives with a freshly strung and set up instrument.
I think bass is overlooked because of how difficult it is to get great tones
Thats a killer default preset. And I agree, bass contributes so much to what you would assume is just the guitar.
Yeah, that's the sound. It really does have the special sauce that the other major bass plugins out there are missing.
Looks like a great way to help people re-discover the character and guts of bass in the mid-range frequencies. Bass should never have been neutered down to "attack plus sub," just like kick drum never should have been reduced to that. Mids are where the balls of a mix live, and kick and bass are where the balls of your band live, much to the chagrin of... well you know who you are.
Glenn: drops a video on a Friday in November
The Spectre Digital Website: Gleeeeennnnn!!
Great Job Glen sounds killer.
That's a pretty damned good approach especially for heavy bass where you need the definition vs mud in the mix.
Glad you went to both pick and fingers. At firsT glance was only seeing pick, but when you did the weak bass track demo, (I assume was fingers) it turned it all around. Looks fun!
Absolutely 1000% agree….I’m primarily a guitarist but also play bass. For the longest time, bass was completely secondary in all my recordings, but a few years ago, I started to make it a much more significant (and sometimes the primary focus of) the recordings and mixes, and it has transformed my music to something sounding somewhat professional. I also try to play bass as much as I can when performing live and have put much more into my bass rig.
FINALLY some love for us Bassists out there! I've been playing bass for over 20 years and always been very serious about writing and locking in with the drummer. I've been playing with the Darkglass Ultra plugin for a few years now, but holy shit the bass plugin market is SLIM PICKINGS! Thanks for being serious about the role of a good bass player for a min! F U GLEENNN!!! 🤘🤘
Bass sims are needed and they can be very useful, but as a bassist, I recomend also investing in a nice pedalboard. I currently have a Darkglass Infinity as the heart of my pedalboard with an MXR Envelope filter and an OC-5 and that’s everything I need. The darkglass means business and it can do anything from pop to ignorant heavy metal, it is a power house. Yes, it will set you back $600, but it is the best $600 a bassist can invest in my opinion. Wether your at the studio or in a live setting, like Glenn says, it will deliver the goods.
For an example of how important bass tone can be watch Nightwish's 2013 Wacken concert. Almost every reviewer has commented on "that amazing bass tone, it cuts through everything". Love what you have done with the software, keep speaking the truth!
That's actually fkn amazing and great gag at the end there too.
I’ve been waiting months for this, nice
Nam has some amazing bass tones for free, but this looks sick. Always great to have more bass plugins
Definitely getting this for when my band starts recording! Thank you so much for making this
That's awsome. The bass plug-in makes me think of mudvayne's, and jinjer's bass players. Huge and amazing!
Ryan & Eugene are amazing! Finally got to see Jinjer live at the Phoenix in Toronto last year, and they brought the fuckin' house down! Still need to see Mudvayne live, that'd be a helluva show, even just to see Ryan rip his Warwick a new asshole lol
Combining a 4x10 SVT-410HLF Ampeg with a 4x12 EVM12L cab was my recent magical trick. I put LP 360 Hz and HP 360 respectively for a phasing-free low end. Sounds BIG, powerful and crisp
I just snagged this deal. Thanks Glenn!
I've already been sold on this since I've been subscribed for awhile and decided to drop the ball for it today
So how are you liking it vs Nerual DSP Parallax?
Very cool! 😎
Too many people on talk bass slam you for being anti bass. You are telling bassists what is smart. Know your parts, change strings and play like you care about the bass, not just there because your didn't get the guitar player gig.
Great to see a bass focused vid.
I just grabbed the plugin... looking forward to giving it a crack!
Good product for a necessary market: people trying to get a good bass sound for a metal tune. It fits the criteria well. I simply advise musicians to not just rely on software all the time. Experiment and you might find something unique. It doesn't always work, but give it a shot.
Glenn, I believe you were mentioning this in a previous video, concerning speakers. Each speaker has a unique sound, and people should experiment with different ones, not just the Celestions or whatever. Same with recording bass.
You can get the same tone using a bass amp sim, distortion/fuzz, an eq, and a compressor/limiter, all that come built in with the presets in Logic Pro or the free Garageband. Same tools bundled as a new plugin, not for me.
Longtime 6string bassist
This is the tone ive been searching for. Reminds me of myeong on train of thought or how intervals sounds. Makes me giddy with excitement to try!
The justice for bass intro meme video was awesome!
2:23 EY MOM! I made it into Glenn's video!
As a bassist its great to hear such a large guitar youtuber emphasize the importance of my instrument.
Brand new strings on my jazz Bass gave me an amazing sound for my album of original music.
The Elephant in the room has been addressed. Awesome.
Not trying to be an asshole. That bass Sim is exactly what kids in future need for bass.
I've only been playing bass and guitar for a few years, and I never see myself as a recording artist. That said, the Element software really transforms the bass tone. It is truly impressive how it breaks into the mix in such a distinctive way. Now if we could only smuggle the master tapes from ...And Justice for All into Specter for a quick edit and re-release...
Glenn, I began my rock/metal "career" as it were as a basisst. Inspired my my bass-playing uncle who did stuff like speed metal and prog like Rush. I started learning the Tool catalog in the early aughts, got a six-string because John Myung inspired me to try to do more, etc. So I have long known the importance of good bass playing and good bass tone to rock and metal albums.
It kills me to hear bands ignoring or even forgoing bass altogether. A record with only extended range guitars sounds FLAT, and I say that as someone who owns a 7 and an 8 string guitar.
Funnily enough I became "a guitarist" in 2013 because nobody in my area took a songwriting bassist seriously. Go figure!
But heavy bass tone and playing can be done even at super low tunings! See - Spiritbox, After the Burial, Periphery, etc.
Heavy bass is the bedrock of amazing metal records, and I hope this sinks in for all aspiring artists out there! 🤘
Holy fuuuuuuuuuuuukkkkk!!!!!!! Sounded killer dude.. i rarely comment in these comment sections but dammmmmnn bro.. i had to put my 2 cents in on this one.. well done Glenn
Thank you, William!
This is killer Glen!
As a bassist, this makes me drool. I mean, we're known to drool anyway, but at least I have a good reason now!
Just like in everything else, your foundation is key. Looks like Element will really help to form that sonic backbone which links the drums and guitars together. I look forward to payday!
Cool, this is exac5ly what I've been looking for. Thank you!
Great plugin by the sounds of it. Pity I didn't see this video until Monday damn it
If this is the kind of tone you want to take with you to play live, I believe the Source Audio Aftershock pedal can be routed in a similar manner to how Element is routed. It can do clean plus two distortion engines in parallel, each engine with its own parametric EQ, then and a master parametric EQ. The distortion engine types include two "Smoked Glass" types. All that is configured in the software and then two of the knobs can be reassigned how you choose. (Caveat: I've never played an Aftershock, but obviously its been on my radar, and Element is brand new, so I've not played it either.) If you're not playing into a cabinet, then you'll need another solution for a cab sim.
Absolutley love the bass tones!!!! But seriously, more dedicated bass videos please! I would love to see similar videos to your guitar tests maybe applied to bass (i.e, pickups, speakers, etc.), or perhaps testing out different preamps on active basses. How about Active versus passive bass and which one's better for metal (probably irrelevant as long as we use the Element Pluging but hey). Maybe doing demo's of custom built basses like from Dingwall for example. Perhaps there are some specific bass myths that can debunked. All I'm saying is give my favorite underappreciated instrument a little more time in the spotlight, cause it sure deserves it.
I actually suggested a bass speaker test, and he read my post in a viewers' comments video! I've been trying to find a similar bass tone using an Orange Micro Terror plugged into a bass cabinet, and it's closer to the sound that I've been chasing for years. I dig bands like Rage Against The Machine, Spiritbox, The Mars Volta, Rush, Mudvayne, Jinjer, and even the occasional Wolfmother song, because of the way they orchestrate the music with a single guitar, and letting the other instruments in the band fill out the sound, instead of just adding more guitars. There really is an art to creating music with that kind of dynamic, and I find it really inspiring
@ideitbawxproductions1880 that's a solid list of bands. I'd want a pickup test for bass as well. Maybe active versus passives. Without having done any tests myself it does seem like bass pickups make a difference, potentially more for active pickups due to the preamps, but who knows.
It indeed sounds great. It reminds me a lot the Parallax by Neural DSP that I'm using, I don't know which one came out first but their purpose is clearly the same.
Some more videos about bass tones, plugins, eventually gear would be more than welcome. I use the Mark 2 Studio by Overloud too, for clear sounds, and it's pretty cool ! Cheers Glen
Parallax is at least four years old. It's not like we didn't have good bass plugins before this. Darkglass suite and svt suite are pretty good too. Not the same as the element tho, but still very usable.
Kind of reminds me of NeuralDSP's Parallax, except better
1000%! I have Parallax and wishing there was a demo of this.
@@khall187 huh, just noticed there's no demo
