@@pyratemage You are not alone. You're right, it's a whole "classic" and maybe I won't reveal anything when I say that the only key word in Penn's "speaking" to the principle was "thin border". The problem with Penn's so-called "code" is that he is not understood even by the magicians present, and there is visible embarrassment as they leave the scene.

How I think he did it.
I'm not a magician. I just watch them alot lol.
    1. The marked cards with the numbers are true 1-52 marked cards.
    2. When he flips the card so you see the face of the card. They are also 1-52.
    3. The truth is that you can see him only show less than half of the deck when he "proved" the marked and faced side of the card.
    4. This means there are 124 cards total.
    5. The marked 1-52 cards have a face side all of "King".
    6. The faced cards all have a back of "4".
    7. All you would simply have to do is remember when the marked card stopped and face card stopped as you show the audience. He never shuffled the deck or anything. So he knew where the cards would break.
These are my thoughts. I'm no magician. I just love watching it. Not sure if it's right but from watching it. That's how I would have done it. And even if I was right, I'd have ZERO mechanical skill to do any of the tricks lol.

As far as languages are concerned in England at top schools it is normal for one to speak a foreign language well even young ladies are sent to "finishing schools" in eg France/Switzerland to perfect their French or work as a chambermaid for one year at ski resort. Even young gentlemen are expected to work abroad for a year in a menial job if they cannot get into the Sorbonne for example for their last year. Then their education is complete. A lot of young debutantes meet prospective husbands this way.
French is a good example as in fact Fench used to be the spoken language in England 1000 years ago!
Many parents now realise English has become the international language and encourage their children to speak it.
Dettante with the French had the President stating English (should be the language of choice) in France at one stage much to the chagrin of many French people.

So where's the magic? His photo did not match either the card or number, they were a card and number of his own choosing. He tried to play mind tricks with the audience by convincing them he had done something amazing which Penn caught when he said he did not do the trick he said he was going to do. That reference to thin is the key to how he did his trick, which is really just having the correct number and correct card on the backside of the cards he turns over.
I was originally impressed by the trick until I heard what Penn said, then I went back watched the performance again and it was crystal clear how he played his psychological game on us.

My only guess for this, not understanding what Penn is talking about -and trying to say it in some sort of code 😁, is that the magician put him self in a sort of sticky situation.
But on the other hand, I dont think he did it this way, cause it would have been pretty easy to unfold.

I thought he must have stuck the #4 card on the top of the 10 and the King on the #33 card but you're right, if they had examined the cards they would have seen that right away.

  • @AJourneyOfYourSoul

Watch the deck when he pulls out the 33. The show likes to cut angles or even cuts out the parts where key parts of the trick are happening so you can’t figure it out, but they missed this one. When he pulled out the first card, the show cut angles so you couldn’t see, but didn’t when he pulls out the second card.
He does a great job of hiding it from the audience and the people at the table, but the show has so many cameras going there really is no way to hide from everything. Which is probably one of the reasons the show takes liberty with how they put the phootage together.

Could it be a Gimmick card deck? There are actually 104 cards on the deck.
There are 52 cards with the number 4 on the back. And there are 52 king of spades that have the numbers 1 to 52 on the back.

Yes, the “thin” line penn kept saying. Was code for the thin cards. The DD deck is such a deck.
And this is why penn says we didn’t see the effect we seemed to. It seems like he predicted the cards selected. But he didn’t really.

My father was a Hebrew Linguist and speaks both English and Hebrew with equal mastery. I've always been fascinated by him, because of the apparent ease with which he switches between the two languages and can hold a conversation in both, especially when I have so much trouble handling just my first language. 😅 I now know from the comments that it's not that way with Norway, but your fascination with people having mastery over a second language is still a very good thing and I absolutely agree!👏

Here are some ideas for your up-coming Fool Us appearance. Not an actual trick, but having to do with what persona you might play. It would be fun if you played the part of someone who's in over his head. You were surprised to be invited and you didn't have any good magic tricks, so you bought one online. The problem is that it just came in the mail and you haven't had time to read the instruction manual yet. But, you hope with P&T's help, you'll figure it out. Of course, as Penn reads the instructions, you're having trouble keeping the trick from falling apart (it might consist of hard to handle sticks and exploding balloons for example). You drop things, wonder out-loud what this or that piece of the trick is good for, even throw a part away (like a bad car mechanic who rebuilds a transmission only to find "extra" parts that he tosses). You could involve (distract) Teller by asking him to hold something, but it ends up being unused.
In the end, though, magic happens - just not the expected magic. It would be cool if the trick's end-goal looked familiar but the actual result was unexpected and done with entirely different mechanics. When someone does that, they sometimes trick P&T because they think they know how it's done so they miss the actual trick.
I smash your "Like" button a lot. Good luck! It will really be interesting to see whatever you decide to do!

I thought it was very suspicious that he pulled some cards and moved them to the bottom of the deck just before he started removing cards. It was very subtle, and not really memorable, but it had a sinister purpose. The camera pulled away from his hands as he pulled the ten of clubs from the deck. Even though we say him pull the 33 up close, he is so skilled it is impossible to see what he really did. That is all I'm going to say so the trick is not ruined.

I went to Norway once a long time ago (ca. half my life) and it was georgious. Most beautiful country I've seen so far ... until I will visit Island finally.
Skandinavien countries like Norway have the benefit of a top notch school system. Everyone learns English since Pre School. And a third or fourth language later on. On top of needed minimum to understand the other Skandinavien languages. (Norwayian, Swedish, Islandic and Dutch are as close as Spanish to Portugeasian, Finnish is a whole different story.)

I live in Sweden, but I’ve been to Norway many times. In fact, one of my dogs was born in Norway! It’s a stunning country and as soon as the pandemic is over I want to travel there again and visit the fjords!
Regarding the language, at least in Sweden (but I think it’s the same in Norway) we start learning english in school when we are around 9 years I think. And before that any movies or shows that aren’t on kids channels are in english with subtitles, so we hear a lot of english from a young age. Most scandinavians understand english almost as well as their native language, and many speak it quite fluently as well, or at least good enough to make oneself understandable in a shop or restaurant for example 😊
