    Magician reacts to D.K 2020 performing several close-up sleight of hand magic tricks for Penn and Teller on their show Penn & Teller Fool Us 2020. D.K is a South Korean magician, and here he performs creative magic effects with shadow and light. Some of the best magic I've ever seen. Very skillful. This video shows the reaction of someone familiar with magic so you can see how someone in this field feels about the performance! This is Fool Us Season 7 2020.

      - It is nice when you treat us to a magic trick. I have to say, great performance! By all means, add tricks when you have one that is ready to share.
      - I was also cracking up to all of your intro jokes, where my wife had to ask, "What are you watching". I didn't know you were so funny.
      - I also was stumped on why D.K was wowing the audience at the beginning, with non-magical stuff (Or was it just that we didn't think it was difficult at all? Maybe he had a brilliant plan of making the the tricks so easy at the beginning, and then ratcheting it up when my guard was down).
      - BTW, I try to remember to let the commercials play through, to throw a few pennies your way.
      1) D.K's performance was beautiful, which caused me not to put too much energy in trying to figure out each trick, seeing it only once. I think he is going to do well! Very artistic and humble. When one trick gets by me, I refocus. (OK, a couple passed by me, due to my inattention):
      - I caught the palmed ball golf, that he threw from the right hand to the left hand. I caught the black circle that he pushed through the hole with the one ball, putted a second on into the hole, and then recovered the hole. I noticed the right hand flipping a switch, and I think a spring loaded clear plastic circle flipped out of the glass to give the illusion that something fell into the glass. I also noticed the golf ball immediately changing shape (dissolving) when he plopped it into the water, before making it "disappear".
      2) OK
      3) It was a nice story. I probably view half of them.
      - I think it was really cool that Shawn Farquhar commented to your upload of his performance (yesterday?). He was definitely flattered by your commentary. He is just awesome! I think I was lucky and caught his slight of hand, before the camera angle changed at the most inconvenient time. I wish Fool Us didn't do that, but I can understand the logic (at least if they leave a little video in, for us to catch).

    I for one was totally blown away by this guy's act. He pulled it off masterfully. The one thing I really appreciate as a viewer of Fool Us is how Penn is always able to find something good (or sometimes several things) good about a magician's performance on the show. Even when the magician does not fool them, Penn is always able to say "you did this move very smoothly" or "we've never seen Technique X combined with Technique Z and elements of Technique A used so beautifully" or whatever.
    Especially for young magicians coming up, getting their careers started, etc., I am sure it is very intimidating to perform magic in front of two of the best magicians in the business, but Penn Always seems to be able to find the good points in their performance and comment positively on those points.
    Anyway, love your channel, love hearing your reactions to the performances, and definitely would love to see more of your magic tricks at the front end of your videos.
    Keep up the good work!

    I think I know how the ball went in the hole (it was part of the mechanical aspect Penn referred to), and also how the ball throwing trick worked. So I don't think it was necessarily "fooling", but it was freaking AWESOME. I'd have given him the trophy just for awesomeness. But again, I think since I have some ideas how it could be done, it's way more likely Penn and Teller do.

    Can't really pick a favorite moment but when he first vanishes the ball, like you said - can't see a thing, so that's very enjoyable.

    It is an interesting act that transitions from storytelling to increasingly impressive sleight of hand, but there are many awkward moves that throw off the flow for me. If will be interesting to see his version of this as the years progress and he refines it further.

    • @Not_Ciel
      @Not_Ciel 4 года назад +1

      I can catch some of the stuff, but nothing seemed blatantly "awkward" in the 3 times I've watched his performance. Yes, some of the tricks were expected (4:13 when he obviously had the ball in the cup prior to showing it, but the presentation of that was beautiful, or 9:31 when he obviously put the black "shadow" on the table behind the screen before removing the screen, or 9:43 when he obviously misdirects which hand the ball is rolling into), but other than those examples, the other 85% of the moves were flawless without having to go back and watch at .25 speed (which of course you can't actually do when it's being performed live in front of you). Then again, I'm not magician, I'm just a guy that's binged enough episodes of Fool Us to pick up on some of the basic techniques used in almost all magic.
      Edit: dont @ me telling me how the tricks are done, because this is the one performance where I don't want to even know how it's done.

    • @bricelory9534
      @bricelory9534 4 года назад +1

      For me none of it felt awkward. I am totally a layperson, so I'm not really looking for the tells of sleight of hand and the like. The use of light and shadow was beautiful to me.

    When he grabs the ball out of the cup of water at 6:45 it looks like he's using his left hand to flip a lever or something. My guess is that this flips up a little compartment that is covered in black fabric, right behind the cup. Which he scoops the ball into. You can hear a light thud and clunk as the ball drops in.
    Wow! What a cool idea and such graceful execution! I love it. :)

  • @xdragon2k
    @xdragon2k 4 года назад +12

    9:29 The camera zoomed way out, obscuring his move (placing the physical shadow onto the table).
    The effect that I really liked though is the fake hole into real hole. Seeing that black disc on the table all the time and saying there is no way a ball can really enter that hole. There is no way. Then he just rolled it in there without covering it. Seeing it again, I kinda see how he does the move that transition the two, but it's still unexpected and quite magical.

    • @Not_Ciel
      @Not_Ciel 4 года назад

      He moves it to a specific spot on the table, so I'd assume the black spot actually has slits of some sort cut into it that allows the weight of the ball to be enough to fall into because of gravity and he places it over a part of the table with a hole and a tube that will make it pop back up into the glass after dropping it in the hole. I think that's what Penn meant by "science". The momentum from dropping a golf ball into a small tube would give it enough momentum coming out the upwards side to be shot out to a specific spot where he'd place the glass for it to fall into. To further that, he never directly shines the light over the black spot to show that it's a solid object, so that's why I thought of that in the first place.

    • @chriswright8114
      @chriswright8114 4 года назад +1

      @@Not_Ciel the spot is solid. what he actually did was never show you the back of it. using the effect of the flashlight to hide the fake spin was a nice touch. I imagine it has a magnet or velcro or something. the real hole has a cover over it that the spot picks up. pause at 9:48 and you can see the outline of the hole. the fact that the fabric keeps a circle shape every time he places a cup down is a genius way to help hide it and also shows him exactly where to place the cup for the launching bit. there could be a tube, but I think it's more likely just a cup. the ball comes up with almost the exact amount of force it needed to go perfectly in the cup, and he supposedly slammed it into that hole. I think when he slammed it down he actually just lifts the cover off of the hole and drops the ball into the cup. when he comes away with the cover he's set to just roll the ball into the hole for the next trick. the ball that comes up is on a spring loaded arm or something that just launches it into the cup. I could be completely wrong about that, but it seems easier than trying to slam it into a tube perfectly each time.

    • @Not_Ciel

    I think the ball in the glass that disappears is a form of plastic that is hydrophilic. It absorbed the water and the white "paint" on it was dissolved by the water, so it looked clear in the water. Kind of like a contact lens in its case. And, when it splashed back into the glass, notice his right hand. It pulls away from the glass at the same time as the water splashes. If you go frame by frame, you can see the "invisible" ball that was still in the glass pop out of the glass onto the floor. I think he had a small string attached to the glass and to his right hand. When he jerked, it disturbed the glass of water making it look like a splash.

    I'm pretty much as casual as someone can be in magic without being just an observer and I picked up on quite a few things, not to take any credit away from DK, I know I never would've thought of anything like that, but a lot of what he did was simply using a lot of highly polished cornerstones of magic, lots of sleight of hand, using the light and the distance between the light source and the objects to make them appear bigger or smaller, very smooth pulls from the sleeve, clean transitions from one hand to the other, and a very well built table to aide with the trick. it's a beautiful and elegant act that really shows his potential and current skill as a magician, acting like a showcase of many different skills and tricks, there's a lot I missed or flat out don't know, like the water splashing from nothing, but I had to imagine, if I was able to catch some of it without rewinding, Penn and Teller must've caught every last thing from start to finish.

    For Jason: DK is likely short for the name Dokyeom, 도겸 in Hangul, if he's taken inspiration from the singer (or perhaps reached the same conclusion on his own). It's not unusual for Koreans to abbreviate/initialise their names, especially for Western audiences, if they don't want to use a Western name. The famous footballer Park Ji Sung, for instance, would often go by J.S Park.

      @Not_Ciel 4 года назад

      I just started learning Korean and I figured this was the case too. It's easier for Western audiences (and Allison) to say "DK" rather than his full Korean name.

    My favorite magic moment is from 4:36 to 10:49. There are very few magic tricks on Fool Us that I don't want to know how they're done, because their presentation to the audience is so mesmerizing that I don't want the illusion to be ruined for me. Shin Lim's was the first case of this. D.K's is the second case. This was so beautifully done and performed with such grace, that whether he fooled them or not goes right out the window. I think Penn was absolutely right in everything he said about this performance. Sometimes I wish they had a trophy specifically for tricks that doesn't fool them, but impresses them so much that the magician deserves a trophy. D.K would be deserving of that award.

    Throwing the powder into an empty hand and a ball appearing was enough for the FU trophy. I’ve watched it 50 times and still can’t see it. DK got a raw deal. I know he said he wasn’t in it for the trophy, but he should’ve gotten it for that one trick, alone.

    “Why are people applauding for that?” Because Jason, it’s a BALL IN A CUP!! A BALL.IN.A.CUP!!! It’s a damn BALL!! Omg how did he pull a BALL from a CUP?
    Seriously though, I appreciate the “little points” bc I was thinking the same thing “why the hell are people applauding when the ball was obviously sitting in the cup the whole time?” Keep up the great work. I loved your 4 cards 4 coin trick too. 😀
