As a public school teacher with a doctorate in education my daughter (Autistic and ADHD) tried school a few months where I work- I happen to be popular with all grades and with parents - this is important- I put her in school where I work to keep an eye on her but also the person educating her. My daughter began to have outbursts and anxiety she is 5 in TK so I started keeping an eye on her and sending kids to keep an eye on her. One day I found out someone was picking on her calling her names at lunch because of her disability which her teacher always pointed out rudely to other kids they began touching her food throwing her lunch- again I have eyes everywhere so I know… finally my kid got frustrated and she pushed the mother fucker away from her food- no one had brought up all the incidents where she was getting bullied but the minute she pushed back her teacher was “concerned” and demanded I give up my lunch time to supervise my “aggressive” kid at recess. When I asked “was her behavior a response to your nasty students touching her food dropping it on purpose and making fun of her?” She goes “oh I wasn’t there I just heard..” I said “oh ok first of all fuck you. Secondly I have eyes everywhere including your class so I know what goes on in there with my kid. HR knows about your silver tooth favorite and how you use her to make fun of my kid.” She was too stunned to speak… I then said “sorry my kid is an inconvenience. Again, fuck you. She’s out.” I pulled my kid out unenrolled her and took her to my class for the day and then started homeschooling her. Ask me if she’s had outbursts… no she hasn’t she’s excelling she’s calm she is sleeping.. I wish I could put that TK teacher (she teaches 4-5 year olds) name on blast because she doesn’t deserve a credential.

As someone who works with students with disabilities and wants to be a teacher I am so upset that any teacher would let one of her students be treated that way and be encouraging it, SMH. It really gives a bad rep to teachers, especially when there are those who will and do genuinely care about their students well being. However, I am so glad your daughter is doing so much better and was advocated for by a great mom like you she is very lucky 🤍🤍 all the best luck 🫶🏼

I was tired of her failing me because she was being irresponsible with her grading, so I put her in her place in front of my whole class and told her I would go to the principals office, and that same day she changed my grades and pulled me aside after class and told me it was fixed. Now, as a 19 year old, I always want to make sure my brother who is 4 never goes through what I did. Despite what I went through, I would still like to become a primary school teacher, because children really are precious souls and have so much potential.

We homeschool our son. We are ending our second year. It was always something we thought of for him because my husband and I both had bad experiences with our grade school teachers. Sometimes it’s not kids that bully it’s the teachers! Not all of them are bad but it just takes one teacher to cause damage. Plus as a parent you know your kids best and how they learn. What best teacher for your kid than you? I know not all people have the luxury to homeschool but try if you can. You don’t have to do 8 hours a day like a classroom. My son and I do an hour a day. That’s really all they need or break it up throughout the day. We also have a huge homeschool group and we have park days. So that “how would he have friends” question is answered for those who think homeschool kids do nothing but stay home. My son has friends and other homeschooling parents offer co-op classes and we do nature walks. It’s the best! My son is free and is so happy and not stuck in a classroom all day being yelled at my a teacher telling him not to talk

I eventually had no choice but to stand up for myself and someone else in the class when he mocked her disability as well. All of this, and then some, went on. Some people are just NOT meant to teach.

Rather than nurture my imagination my teacher decided to read out my story in front of the class and humiliate me. While as an adult I realise the story sounded ridiculous, at 8 it’s hurtful and harmful to have a whole class of your peers laugh at you. It’s something I’ve never forgotten.

When I was in college I had one professor who was very bitter and mean. My mother died a few months before I took this class and I was extremely depressed so I wasn’t participating much in class (on top of my usual quietness because I’m very introverted). We had a meeting and she brought up the fact that I didn’t talk much in class and she told me I was “never going to get anywhere in life if I didn’t learn to speak in public.” I ended up just walking out of the room and crying. It sucks that there are teachers at all levels that don’t actually care about the well being or mental health of their students.

i went through something very similar. when i was in 7th grade, my math teacher humiliated me every single day. i was never amazing at math, but i always tried my best. i also had braces and i was on the tennis team so i was getting checkouts here and there for orthodontic appointments or tennis matches. one day, i got a checkout and as i was packing up my stuff, she said “you know what grades you make in this class, you shouldn’t be leaving all the time.” that day, i stopped asking questions and talking. i just wanted to be invisible. even before that when i did ask questions she made me feel so dumb and unworthy. i had been telling my mom and she had emailed her numerous times asking for a parent teacher conference, but never got a response. my dad ended up going up to the school, had a meeting with her and the principal ON THE SPOT, and i never had any problems with after that. of course, she gave me attitude for ratting her out. turns out, she was pissed because she got moved to 7th grade “basic” (what she called our class) from 8th grade advanced math and she took it out on me. i am now a freshman in college, and i have never asked a question in class since.

I’m a 31 year old homeschooled mother of 5 who is also homeschooling her own children. My siblings and I were pulled out of PRIVATE school for an issue where a teacher was bullying my older sister. I 100% advocate for homeschooling, circumstance permitting. There is something so empowering to be able to teach one’s own children and know they’re safe. Most people worry about whether they’re qualified to teach their own children or if their children will be properly socialized. To that I say: we live in one of the most educated and interconnected societies in history. If you have a bachelor’s degree (which most people do nowadays), a car, and internet, there is no reason your children can’t be properly educated and socialized by their parent.

I do not trust strangers with my children and I think it sucks that it's so expensive to live now that more families don't have that option. Raising and teaching children is such an important and difficult job but it's deprioritized in a lot of areas because people are so focused on surviving and making money. I'm sure that most people are doing their best but being on social media also made me realize how many people seem to hate children which is wild to me. So you have to stay vigilant, lol!

I see people in the comments worrying about the social aspect of home schooling and while a reasonable worry, being able to monitor your children’s friends through taking them to their play dates/letting them hang with family, can be a blessing in disguise! Not to combat something negative with something MORE negative but in my country the rates of children acting up have been rising through the roof, and in my small town specifically I’ve heard a few cases of children who’ve been torturing (etc.) poor baby animals ☹️. I’m not sure if this is something common. But where I’m from I’ve never heard of stuff like this, especially not in my small area. I think some parents are letting school & the internet raise their children and there’s a lot of sick people out there we can’t protect our children from. While not a reason to completely isolate a child as with good parenting children won’t end up that way of course, I see home schooling as a benefit to the prevention of them socially deviating from what has been taught at home by associating with friends we can’t monitor from home. Again not a reason to homeschool as prevention isn’t always the cure but just another look at the “children will become socially awkward at home” stance (I also myself believe social awkwardness is a multifaceted issue, & isn’t all to blame on homeschooling every time, plenty of debilitating awkwardness exists in school children and plenty of social butterflies exist as homeschool kids)

One of the things that really messed me up as a kid was being so young and experiencing racism from my teachers. I’m Mexican(chicana) my first language was English, but so many of my teachers would treat me poorly and make remarks about me, in front of my face and say it was ok to others teachers because I didn’t speak English. This one coach was furious because he thought I was placed in his class(first day, I was sitting in the wrong area) he was yelling in the coaches office “did you put some Mexican in my class?!”
I remember being so embarrassed and sick to my stomach. I would never tell my mom because she was like your mom and would have come up to my school ready to set fire to everybody.
My son is in Kindergarten and I was so worried and anxiety ridden with how his teachers and faculty would deal with him, but so far he’s only had positive experiences and I’m thankful for it, but I’m still scared because we still have 11 years to go. So I just talk to him everyday how was your teacher treating you today and how were your friends treating you today. He’s happy at the end of the day, but I still worry.

I'm late to this party, but I homeschool my 10 year old! I did so in kindergarten. Then she was in public school for a little while in 1st grade until covid hit, then she was doing the online thing on and off through 1st and 2nd grade. By the time she was in 3rd grade, her and all her classmates were so far behind. Plus she's got ADHD. So I was done. I homeschooled her last year for 4th grade and I'm doing it now in 5th. And I'll homeschool my son when he's old enough. These public schools are a WHOLE MESS right now. So many teachers quit during the pandemic and now they're hiring people who aren't even qualified because they just need a body in the room. And my kid got so far behind thanks to her adhd and the pandemic that I knew sending her back would just commit her to a life of being that left behind kid. NOT ON MY WATCH! She's thriving now with me at home, getting excited about learning, and I have the time to be one-on-one with her and help her with her struggles, and let her work ahead if she's finding things easy, etc. It's SO much better for her. Don't get me wrong, it's WORK! But it's worth it ❤

I think that if the educational environment is distracting (bad teachers, bullies, lack or resources) from what kids are supposed to be there for , which is to learn then homeschooling is a great option. Some kids thrive with the independence, some kids can become unmotivated because they don't have the structure of a classroom. It is about what works best for the kids or just make sense for the family.

I'm gonna say this short to the point. My non verbal son with down surrendering was accused. His teacher and aid charged with assault and battery, neglect, and first degrees child abuse from what they did to him and a couple other kids. The damage they wrought had impact for years!! None of my kids have stepped foot in public education. This role isn't for everyone. For those that do it right, who for six years had the most amazing impact on him I humbly thank you.

As a teacher, I have witnessed everything you just talked about. Colleagues taking their personal frustrations out on the kids, not being there for the right reasons, speaking negativity into these kids and damaging their self-worth. It’s disgusting to watch and a lot of times there are no repercussions to the teachers that do it because they have seniority at the school and have been doing it for years. I’ve only seen one teacher fired for this behavior because he took it too far and wound up shooting a kid with a nerf gun and it hit the kid’s eye. The nerf bullet had a thumb tac in it so the kid had to get surgery and could have sued the school. School are CRAZY, these parents need to be diligent in keeping up with what is going on. I’m also considering teaching my kids myself when I have school-aged kids.

She is now suffering because of how much stress and anxiety she had from the bullying and fear of going to school daily and she is now suffering from an extremely rare illness and literally suffering, and so because of this my sister has to suffer and live with this for the rest of her life, I really wish there were less cruelty especially in school and your teachers should be the ones protecting these children NOT bullying them and intimidating them and calling them out over things they can’t control in front of everyone!

I had a vice principal accuse me of being anorexic in 8th grade. I went to the principles office to get a detention slip (I was reading a novel during math class and teacher wrote me up for a Friday school----3 hour detention on a Friday & no school dance). She looked at me and asked what size jeans I wore, told me I looked sick, asked if she should call my mom, and then proceeded to hand me the slip out of a drawer filled with twinkies and junk food. It was so hurtful. I skipped my next class and cried in the locker room that day. Never forget.

They wouldn't pay attention at school and the teachers didn't help. One on one is the best way to teach your kids anything! Best decision ever! You won't regret it!

I’m not a teacher, but I do work at the front office. For myself, I don’t have to be a teacher to show these kids that they matter. I’ve seen so many kids (I work at an intermediate 12-14 yr olds) come in upset because of many reasons. A few of them confide in me because I listen to them. I also TALK TO them, not AT THEM. This is where a lot of adults fail these kids, they think “been there, done that” so you’re not going to get away with the attitude. It just takes sitting with them and talking to them, see what’s going on and try to help them. Instead, we’re pushing them away like their feelings don’t matter because they’re just being “kids/ teenagers”.
We definitely have to do better with our kids.

Hey Nikki! I graduated in 2022 and due to the pandemic I’ve seen both sides. I think I’m my early years if I was homeschooled that would have affected my social capacity. I think later on in highschool or middle school, online schooling programs like flvs, etc could be beneficial for accelerated learning and an early graduation, but elementary school at least should be in person. No whether you choose public or private is completely up to you, but just coming from a very recent student of the public education system, homeschooling can be beneficial but what age you start can really impact how much they know about the world and how well they’re able to interact with other people and other personalities in groups, etc.

I was always targeted and I never knew why but I remember this one time when I was in like kindergarten or first grade and I didn’t wear sneaker on a Tuesday I had boots on and Tuesday was the day for the gym so usually you would sit out all day and watch the other kids have fun but this day she decided that she was going to make me run around and do all the activities by myself in front of the entire class and laugh with the class at me. This was at independence elementary school in rock Hill South Carolina, and her name is Miss Brown and she is a PE teacher still to this day.

Girl I felt this in my heart 💔. My little brother has mild autism and he wanted to play violin, which he never had an issue with until he went into middle school. The teacher was so cold and rude to him because he had a disability and wasn’t the best violin player. Instead of trying to help him be better he would just belittle him in front of the class. My mom tried her best to speak with the principals and teacher but in the end my brother just gave up and quit his orchestra class 😞 sometimes these people just have a shitty personal life and project it onto their students. It’s sad but this is what we do without even realizing.

And most teachers, if not all, go through alot of training about how to speak to children and what not to say. And then still many choose to do the wrong thing. Anyway I've always been passionate about teaching, but its even more important to teach kids to be good kind human beings

I truly do believe that teachers have to be passionate & love their job in order to be able to reach the next generation. They need to be patient with the students and help them any way they can not break them down. I get that teachers have a lot of their plate but we do appreciate the ones that do their job correctly and put their all into it.❤ That’s so disgusting what the teachers were doing at school grounds taking away your & your classmates time to learn. When your ready to enroll your kids in school or if you decide your good with home schooling them until graduation that’s YOUR choice & nobody else’s except your Husbands hehe. I'm scared for my future, for the safety of these kids, and it's not right. No one should go to school or work afraif that they may not come home. These 2 weren't my teachers, they were my sister's. I didn't know at the time but they had always been this way. They were racist bullies to 2nd graders. Yup they were, there's no denying.
One day, I'm not sure why but it was the only time my teacher needed these 2 teachers to take us in for an hour or so as a class.
We come in, they have us read. They tell us to partner up and read with each other. Everybody instantly partnered up and I couldn't find anyone. I was 8, and I was nervous and shy because there was no one left to be my partner. My younger self didn't know what to do and was honestly scared for some reason.
So I sat there quietly by myself while everyone had the comfort of having a partner and were able to perform the assignment.
One of the teachers, Lord Farquaad, noticed I was just sitting there. Instead of asking to me personally as to why I wasn't reading and just sitting there. She immediately gets furiated looking at me, announces in front of the whole class (mind you it was 2 whole classes) and says, "Why aren't you reading?? Where's your partner?!"
I sheepishly replied because not only was I already scared and embarrassed that I couldn't find a partner I told her that there's wasn't anyone else to partner up with. She says to me, again in front of everyone, "Oh..so you just sit there like a lump on log?" and then referencing me with her face with a dumbfounded look.
The sheer shame I felt by that. That I couldn't intelligent think for myself at 8 years old to somehow just force my way into a pair something, that was so vile of her. It's so inconsequential to be so un-gentle with a kid over not finding a partner. It takes emotional intelligence to be kind, consider that it's a nervous kid without a partner that probably needs help. The fact that she had the future in her hands, little beings in her care and this is how she handled us...i would say she's worse than a lump on a log. And I just know I'm so much more than what she did to me as a young kid and that she's out there reaping her rewards somehow.

I’m so glad I listened to the whole video before commenting on my thoughts about homeschooling 😅
I completely agree with you! If people are not passionate about helping children grow in a safe and healthy environment, they should not go into social services/education.
Regarding homeschooling: I was homeschooled by my mom for 18 years and I will only say I wish she had set the “mom” versus “teacher” boundary better for the sake of our relationship.
That would be my only piece of advice if you choose this route. There are great homeschool programs that include a Child’s Bill of Rights so you can safely homeschool 😊
Sometimes parents want to homeschool as a trigger response to things in the news, and they don’t consider the cons of homeschooling (there are many!)
