  • In TS Eliot's 'The Wasteland', the Fire Sermon paints a bleak picture of modern life, particularly in London, as a wasteland of sexual frustration, spiritual emptiness, and social decay. The Thames River, once a symbol of life and commerce, becomes a stagnant reminder of the city's decline.

What I'm less convinced of, but makes sense to me, is that "the last fingers of leaf" is a pun, related to the "London = Hell" Unreal City meme, for the last fingers of Leathe.

28:29 "Makes a welcome of indifference" takes me to Milton's PL Book 1 "The mind can make heaven of hell". Just like Satan's mind could make a heaven of hell, this man's vanity has made a welcome indifference it seems!
Thank you so much for this ma'am. Loving this series.

BTW: because Eliot's footnotes are truths that lie, I wanted to mention that the Tempest reference is a Twelfth Night reference. "Musing upon the king my wreck and on the king my death before him," is "Sebastian was my ; such a Sebastian was my too,"
Eliot may have hid this because the male/female duality between Olivia and Sebastian is a source of humor in Twelfth Night, the gender duality of Tiresias is meant to portray something holy.

I can connect Margate Sands...There is a shell grotto, fairly famous, under Margate Sands. Nobody was exactly sure where it came from, but in 2007 they discovered a sister grotto under the Palatine hill in Rome. If they are from the same culture, then it's PHONECIAN SAILORS who built both structures, who built it in the second half of the first millennium BCE, where they established many colonies, sailing from their home base in .... Carthage.

@@NibblePop Per Wikipedia: "Since the 2007 discovery of a domed cave under the Palatine Hill in Rome with shells, mosaics and marble in similar patterns to those in the Rectangular Chamber in Margate, some credence has been given to the theory that the Shell Grotto could have been created by the Phoenicians in the second half of the first millennium BCE, when they were founding many colonies from their base in Carthage, however the gothic style of the arches would be a first for a pre 12th century arcade."

I couldn't find anything about when the Violet Hour is. It seems to be the twilight equivalent to the Golden Hour just after dawn or just before dusk, where photographs looks really nice due to the angle of the sun. So, not being British, I looked up when exactly "tea" was, as a time, and it turns out that industral capitalism moved tea from the afternoon to "high tea" in the evening. It changed the timing of meals, adjusting the human rest-and-digest cycles to the needs not of our animal natures but to the needs of machine capital.
