Just a note on the Berber slave raids on European shores.. Most of the imported European captives were presented as gifts to or sold for an expensive price to wealthy families or royalty. It is unlikely that "most of them died from abuse or disease" because the North African culture at the time dictated that a master is only as rich and generous as to how well dressed and healthy his slave appears to be which means that these slave were especially taken cared for. However, under Ottoman rule, it was customary for these slaves to convert to Islam and change their names abandoning their past which could explain the misconception as to why it was presumed that they were dead. I should also note that giving the nature of the Ottoman regime, many of these slaves rose in military ranks and even became leaders and ministers under Bey rule and given Military family names like "Caid" meaning commander or Khaznadar which is another military rank. One of the direct decendents of these European slaves was actually the late Tunisian president Beji Caid Esebssi.

Yeah lots of people forget that some pharoahs were of what we would consider Arabian or Middle Eastern descent. The ancient Egyptian population wasn't homogeneous and trade/travel flourished up and down the Nile.
I think it's fair to say that the West pretty much sweeps African history under the rug for the sake of "convenience". It's clear there's a rich, nuanced piece of the puzzle buried in centuries of African history but because we're still learning so much, all the curriculum bothers with is Egypt, the Middle Passage, and Rhodesia/Apartheid
This is a topic that so many people dont' know about. I studied World History so I knew much of what you said. But I didn't like ancient history so I didn't know about the other ruins.

Anyone who doesn't understand evolution needs an education
Thank you simon for discussing the differences between berber's and bantus..some of my moms ancestors hailed from Morocco and Algeria..and were berbers and nomads..were in the us..but if asked..i say north African American..mixed with other....interesting video Simon...
It must have been hard for the "original" man & the "original" woman to get a date when there was a 20,000 year difference between their existence.
Well as long as you're actually not being funny, they are GENETIC ancestors, not original breeding pair like the Adam and Eve mythology. Its just that allegedly, only their genes survived this long.
Africa has been dethroned as cradle of man
Gotta admit I was kinda expecting a SJW video telling me about how some earthworks in Sub Sahara Africa where a more impressive engineering feat than the Great Wall of China. Happy to say i got disappointed on that expectation. Very grounded video that stayed away from the misery porn that one would find on this topic way too often.
I was astounded to realize they didn't fall for the 'all whities ruined all Africa' narrative, either. Things are always way more complicated than that.
Fabian Suckfüll yes this was a very well made video
@Mwaniki Mwaniki Which Sub Saharan earthworks did you think i was talking about? Don't get me wrong, 16.000km of defensive works are quite impressive. But ditches and earth works don't compare to an actual defensive wall.
Glad i wasnt the only one
He did say that
I smashed the like button 👍🏽
Great! I don't know how people imagine Africa was just a bunch of tribes living in harmony when they like any part of the world had big empires and a lot, but a lot of wars
In my 70 years this is the first I heard of a belief that Africans lived in harmony with each other. The very idea should cause all but the most naive to raise an eyebrow.
:40 Wakanda is there!
The Wakandans speak Xhosa in the movie. :)
New found respect. You are a legend in my book. I apologize if i left rude comments towards you. Have a great day thumbs up stay awesome everyone.
Someones black
@@vperkv6554 LOL nailed it.
You sound like Serpentza with that "Stay Awesome" everybody phrase lol
Mr. Whistler: WOW!
Warmly, Yada, Yada, Yada
Thanks for this video Sir. Many people are ignorant when it comes to Africa
Love this video can we get pt2 please
The Africans were the 1st to explore Africa, by thousands of years.
Touché!
I don't believe that Black People came to Africa they begun on the African continent. The non Blacks came last.
Actually Africa is the home to all of humanity. Africans have been in Africa since the first modern human was born.
Everyone is African.
The greatest genetic diversity in humans is still found in Africa.
Africa is our mother.
Africa is the next society, perhaps the last, to be harvested in terms of consumers! So be kept "stupid" for as long as possible, until the time comes for the multinationals to harvest.
I am 57 now, I read about this 40 years ago..
climate change will render parts of north africa uninhabitable
@@earthrocker4247 They may not have taken that into account😖
The einstein project. Theres an african wide project that because of various sociological maths figures the next einstein will pop up on the continent. So they are actively looking in universities, schools and such. Theyve found some amazing people. Africa is full of amazing scientific work.
Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrians are also very distinct from other Africans
Every region is different. We can all easily tell if someone is from West/East/North/South
Stolen village it's a book about 113 people kidnapped in a town in Ireland and brought as slaves to Algeria. Excellent book really worth a read
Part Two, PLEASE!
Yeah lots of people forget that some pharoahs were of what we would consider Arabian or Middle Eastern descent. The ancient Egyptian population wasn't homogeneous and trade/travel flourished up and down the Nile.
No they were not like the modern day Arabs living in Egypt. They were Brown. Egypt is in Africa.
.
People look at Africa like the homeless man down the street, only with pity, not knowing how it got to this point
Agree with that.
More like the abusive husband getting drunk with power, while the mother and children suffer.
An idea for Biographics: Mansa Musa, the richest human ever, and Shaka Zulu.
I’d like to see one on Queen Nzinga. I can’t help but feel that she was instrumental in escalating the slave trade, and yet she is idolized.
Quarantine with Simon , yay
We need to stop trying to say hateful people made up the differences and just accept the differences and move on. They know, we know, she knows, and he knows.
Other places have been misunderstood and nobody claimed that the racists did that.
People treat African history how they treat indigenous american history... Non-existent. Both groups hold so much history, blood, tears, and peace.
Every time I watch a Simon Whistler Production - and I like it - I break my mouse . . .
You're meant to smash the like button, not your mouse!!! :P
@@twocvbloke Well - if I did that I'd have to replace my freaking monitor!!!!
Going back far enough we're all African
Facts about Africa was very interesting. Gives info that could change ideas about slavery, African societies and the systems there that cause so much povert.

You just had to choose that one, didn't you :P
''the land of kush''
i gotchu ;)
Why doesn't Wakanda do more to help the rest of Africa?
