I wish they taught it in all schools , even 2020 no one talks about individual countries in Africa just a generalisation lumped together rather than the fascinating diverse individual countries. No other place on earth gets that treatment .
So when my kids say 'in Africa ' I say which country and make them pin point the individual country not just the continent.

Just a note on the Berber slave raids on European shores.. Most of the imported European captives were presented as gifts to or sold for an expensive price to wealthy families or royalty. It is unlikely that "most of them died from abuse or disease" because the North African culture at the time dictated that a master is only as rich and generous as to how well dressed and healthy his slave appears to be which means that these slave were especially taken cared for. However, under Ottoman rule, it was customary for these slaves to convert to Islam and change their names abandoning their past which could explain the misconception as to why it was presumed that they were dead. I should also note that giving the nature of the Ottoman regime, many of these slaves rose in military ranks and even became leaders and ministers under Bey rule and given Military family names like "Caid" meaning commander or Khaznadar which is another military rank. One of the direct decendents of these European slaves was actually the late Tunisian president Beji Caid Esebssi.

Great content and I’m pleasantly surprised that you’re mostly accurate :-) Love to see African content on this channel, but what would be even better is content about individual countries or cultures (seeing as we’re the most diverse continent). Corrections and additions:
#5: North Africa’s Berbers and Arabs don’t consider themselves African. Generally, it’s dark-skinned North Africans who identify as African
#4: Africa’s leaders aren’t hampered by a belief in pre-colonial utopian harmony. That’s not a thing. Our leaders so don’t care about that and Africans don’t believe that either. Our issues stem from many complicated reasons, including colonization and decolonization (which you summarized in #3), but not one of them is this utopian harmony belief (that originated outside Africa)
#3: Add the handing over at decolonization to incompetent governments that were sympathetic to the colonial powers in order to ensure post-colonial economic dependence

I think at one point it mentions a king of Timbuktu or something, making a pilgrimage to Mecca and he spread so much wealth that he caused localized hyperinflation.
As an aside, I think there was a (pretty strong) theory that some 100K years or so ago there was either a major volcanic eruption or possible meteor strike that killed off all but about 10K breeding pairs of humans. This accounts for the relative lack of genetic diversity. For all the various region differences for humans we're still like 99.98% identical.
