- "17-year-old Sal Mineo was one of the hottest young actors in Hollywood when The Young Don’t Cry was specially tailored for his talents. Filmed on location at the Brockton Orphanage For Boys in Savannah, Georgia, the film stars Mineo as Leslie Henderson, a lonely older orphan who befriends escaped convict Rudy Krist (James Whitmore). Like Leslie, Rudy has spent his entire life feeling alone and unloved, but in his case he is totally irredeemable, using Leslie to further his own getaway plans. At long last, Leslie figures out that Rudy is no-good and also finds his own true niche in life.
Worth noting is the film's sympathetic treatment of its two principal black characters, played by Leigh Whipper and Ruth Attaway; in 1957 it was still chancy to show any sort of equanimity between black and white people on screen.

Sal’s smile could melt your heart ❤️
Ikr. Such a babydoll. 🥰🥰
Three of my brothers are in this movie. The black haired boy who Sal goes up to and asks it he's taken a shower - then checks his feet and he takes his pajama shirt off by hanging it on a hook - is my brother who was a year older than I. He was seven at the time and died from an automobile accident when he was 41. The dark haired guy in the truck that yells something at the boys when they are leaving campus is my brother who is now 80. "Stanley" who is asked to ring the bell - is my 81 year old brother. It was so fun watching this movie today! I have one other brother who is now 62. He wasn't born yet when the movie was filmed. And yes, we are all from Savannah where the movie was made.

My sister who is now 80 used to have a crush on Sal when she was a teenager. It's so sad he had to go the way he did.
Sal was a very good actor and an engaging personality. You root for him just naturally.

marlon brando and james dean got the roles but james whitmore and sal mineo did everything better
Great movie
All the real great actors are gone.
A+A+A+A+A+A+ Fantastic sleeper of a movie.... Sal Mineo out-does James Dean BIG-TIME
No toilets in the bathroom?
I gotta tell ya, james dean was worshipped by sal mineo, dennis hopper, montgomery clift and paul newman and it was tragic the way he died. but in my opinion he was over rated!in the three films he did he was too busy being james dean instead of playing the character. I just did not believe him! a good actor is an actor that you forget what their real name is. I believe sal mineo. hopper, clift and newman. ironically if dean had not died mineo, hopper, clift and newman may not have had the success they got. the same goes for brando with the exception of one or two movies. vito Corleone you forget who the actor is.
This movie is awsome
Clift didn't worshipped Dean, it was the other way around. Clift was already famous and a well respected actor when J.D. busted into the scene.
James Dean I felt, was rather over rated. However it’s kinda like saying Elvis was overrated. Elvis is still selling records and merchandise today on a huge scale. He was 42 when he died. The changes in him over those twenty years or so when he was a star , was shocking.
James Dean was equivalent to Elvis at the time amongst the young people. His life was cut short and we never got a to see how he would have developed as a screen star. I somehow don’t believe the angst would have been part of his screen persona for as long as Elvis’ singing and appearance changes were accepted. I felt as a youth, that the James Dean explosive unnatural spoiled child like angst was wearing thin at the time.
Only an opinion garnered from my youthful memories.
