Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and it's time to Balrog and roll as we are now at the finale for Rings Of Power Season 1.
The Lord Of The Rings show answers a lot of questions in it's last episode and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down what happens, what it means for the future and also giving our review on the series as a whole.
Full spoilers from here on out so if you don't want anything ruined then I recommend that you head out now. Please hit the thumbs up button if you think the video is precious and make sure you subscribe for videos that you'll be galadriel you stuck around for.
Even if the puns are s**t.
With that out the way, huge thank you for clicking this, now let's get into Rings Of Power Episode 8.
    -
Now last week saw the aftermath of the birth of Mount Doom which completely ravaged the land. Normally I'd say One does not simply change the text of the southlands into Mordor but after Adar took over the realm it became his. Miriel decided to return to Numenor in order to gather more forces and both Galadriel and Halbrand travelled out together.
There was also Isildurs horse Beric which was let off the leash and similar to Arragorn in the two towers, this ends up tracking him down.
There was also the harfoots who set out looking for the stranger in order to warn him he was being tracked by Feminem and the guy who played stan in the music video.
Lastly was Durin who told Elrond and his son to Leave the digging and he accidentally awakened a balrog whilst refusing to help the elves.
That should be you fully caught up and this entry picks up with the stranger. We get a strong focus on his eye similar to how last week started with Galadrield, here he is in Elyn Galen or The Greenwood.
Once the shadow of Dol Guldur spread this became known as Mirkwood. He finds the apple that nori gave him last week but he drops this only for it to be picked up by what seems to be Nori. However,

Like Adar used the same words Sauron told him which means Sauron maybe said the same phrase so many times it became branded in him. Similar to how Sauron tempted Galadriel with power but in Fellowship she would be tempted again by the “will of Sauron” in form of the ring and the same words were used to tempt her. Just like the ring tells all of its bearers how “precious” it is. It’s so interesting to see how Sauron’s personality eventually becomes part of the One Ring and how it has telepathic abilities just like Sauron did and how it uses the same words even thousands of years later.

@@jakebeaver2139 There is no big REASON why Gandalf should come only in 3d age. Little to nothing is detailed about the 2nd age, and the source that says only 2 came in 2nd age is just a few lines. its not from any big story or anything. which is why we no nothing about the two blues. I dont think its either denied that Gandalf did NOT come in the 2nd age, but that he only made his role big and important into the 3d age. Like Saruman. So Gandalf could have come a lot earlier than we though and had a journy that is less knows. And even if its contrary to what Tolkien wrote, this is what he SHOULD have done and who knows, maybe he would have done this revision; that Gandalf came early and spent time as a journeyman, building relationsships and influenceing indirectly. Imagine the series looks at how he befriends Elrond, Galadriel and the others... and how he meets the other wizards and develop their relationships. While I do like slow stories, I still think they have pacing issues, especially for a series that is released an episode a week. I recently watched/ listened to the earlier episodes in a row while knitting and they felt more coherent when binged, than when watched with weeks between story-portions. The season also feels unbalanced to me because while the start was slow (which I didn't mind especially in the plot with the dwarves and elves) the last episodes felt very rushed. In general I'd probably be happier if they'd had really committed to one or two storylines instead of mixing them all together. The whole mithril-line was interesting enough in itself.
As for Halbrand, I'd have liked him to be the witchking. Simply because a flawed character trying to be decent but ultimately failing and Galadriel suffering the loss of a real friend (instead of a fake one) would have been just way more tragic.

If you watch the series just to watch, it becomes much better. If you are watching it to compare to all the other LOTR content then yes they copped out. But a lot of people watching might not know who Gandalf or Sauron were or there origin stories. So for them the reveal was amazing. My wife who has never seen LOTR loved the last episode. She said "that chick must be pissed he cheated her like that" and she had no idea he would turn into a bad guy.
I feel if you watch the season in a vacuum you will enjoy it much more then trying to compare it to other LOTR content.

Watching it alongside HOTD definitely showed that it was a bit lacking, but I just thought it was a good thing to put on while I ate my dinner at the end of the day. Some super nice visuals, a nice little story and some lotr fantasy. It's not anything amazing, but overall I enjoyed watching it. Hopefully amazon picks up on some of the criticism and beefs it up a bit, but I'll be watching season 2 regardless.

I disagree. Disregarding movies, books, and lore, this show still looks incredibly bland. The acting is pretty uneven across the cast, the writing has all the subtlety and elegance of a strip mine, the worldbuilding looks like hastily thought-out generic fantasy, and the story was maybe two or three episodes' worth stretched across eight.

@@ironcladnomad5639 I rewatched the series and if you leave out the last half of episode 8 I think it was great. Sauron fooling the elf lady is amazing. The guy she was looking for was right under her nose and she never questioned it. So deep was her hate that she couldn't see what was right in front of her.
But I'll never win this argument. I liked the series. It was a nice base to the coming seasons. It wasn't an all time great like GOT season one or the expanse. But I think they took this season to lay the groundwork for future seasons. And that is why it suffered writing wise.

    • @frozenbuckeye6700

@@gg-bs1ey It is so hard to follow up what PJ did. They are also working with less of a guide. LOTR had the blueprint all they had to do was not stray to far. TRoP has less of a blueprint. But they also have to stay "within" a certain area. I hope the wizard isn't Gandalf. But I do like that Sauron tricked Galadriel. I feel it shows how cunning Sauron was. People watch LOTR and don't realize how truly powerful Sauron and Morgoth were. I mean we never even see Sauron fight. If this show can give viewers insight into how incredibly powerful Sauron truly was I think that alone will make it a success. I would also like to see them go more into the Music of the Ainur and the lore that comes with it. Hopefully they don't just copy paste LOTR with Gandalf and some hobbits going on a road trip.

The thing with the dwarf king is they have the foreknowledge of all previous dwarf kings. There's a brief moment he says that to Durin, and I think that's why he halted the digging because he knew something dangerous dwelled deep in that shaft. There was no other shaft that was being shut. There's also the possibility he knew the story of how mythril was formed. It was a fight between an elf and a balrog, but we were never told how that fight ended. To further point out you were saying how the rings for the dwarves had little effect on them besides making them greedy because they had a strong spirit. What if the rings negated that dwarven foresight/spirit and left behind only their greed similar to how the rings of the humans sapped them of their spirit and left behind hopelessness.

I think it sums up this series in a nutshell, nothing quite hit the mark. Everything was long winded and the writing felt like they wanted to change parts of the lore but didn’t have enough good Ideas make it work as a complete, fulfilling story. It’s clear that the shows writers are no Tolkien. They should of made their own story completely or just stuck to Tolkiens ideas. Instead they did neither and for these reasons I sadly thought it was a bit of a let down.

Like you, I guessed very early that Halbrand was Sauron and The Stranger was Gandalf, so their attempts at misdirection weren't effective, and perhaps storytelling is the weakest part of the series, whereas the visuals are superb.

2nd season predictions is hard to make. I bet we Sauron take over Mordor and dispatch Adar? I doubt Sauron will try to put on another disguise to return to Eregion but maybe they will adjust that story line as well. Bet mithril and the dwarves will play a huge role though.

The stranger is one of the two blue wizards that were sent to ME earlier than the other 3, they go east and are never heard of again, tought to have either died or joined Sauron. They were sent to ME to do the thing that we see Galadriel do in the first episode, look for traces of Sauron and report back with the findings, thats why when they eventually dont report back and are never heard of again the Valar send in Gandalf Radagast and Saruman with Gandalf beeing specifically chosen to go on behest of one of the Valar, most of their power sealed away and taking form of old men to be less imposing and seem more trustworthy. Gandalf has a soft spot for all creatures of ME with good in them, that is because he was an apprentice to a Valar who was very compasionate and toughtfull and loving, she taught him those same lessons and that is why Gandalf acts the way he does around Hobbits

I agree with your comment on the pacing. My sense is that it is a reflection of a concern over laying a good foundation for all the changes they made to Tolkien’s writings with timelines and character development. Peter Jackson did this but to a much lesser degree. Seems as though the writers felt because there are a lot of unknowns during this age in Tolkien’s work (The Silmarillion) they could play a bit “fast and loose”. But picking up characters, like Gandalf, and moving them thousands of years in the timeline as well as expanding the dimensions of a character like Galadriel that don’t seem consistent with what we know from Tolkien’s writing (Galadriel the warrior), could seem a bit drastic. But, I also need to trust that these people ( producers, writers, directors, etc.) know way better than I do what it takes to make a long term television series. They need characters that are interesting enough that we will want to follow them and a storyline that leaves us guessing what is next. Sticking exactly to Tolkien’s writings in a TV series might not accomplish either. Not to mention ratings. I decided early on to watch this from the perspective that it is a “Tolkien inspired” work and not canonical. To watch it with an expectation that it would maintain a high level high of being true to Tolkien is, I think, unreasonable.

the stranger is Alatar i am sure of it.Alatar is said to have a shorter beard and younger looking than Gandof. the other blue wizard Pallando (Alatars' friend) may join him at the halfway point in seson 2. unless Amazon really fubars the timelines the other 3 wizards will come in the 3rd age.

I was kind of shocked at the reveal that Halbrand is Sauron. I've read some of the Silmarillion, but not all of the Silmarillion books, so I was kind of going in blind.

Was reading a lot of bad rep/reviews BEFORE the show started, now that my expectations were lowered even before it started I enjoyed the show and eager for season 2. Don't let negativity ruin your experience I would say...BTW great channel, always come here after an episode!

A whole season about Finrod Felagund, King of the Nargothrond, Master of Caves, Friend of men, guy who literally wrestled a werewolf with his bare hands to save a friend? Yeah! I would be so down for that! Just one problem... they don't have those copyrights.
Thanks for braving the opinion crosshairs for these in depth reviews!

I really enjoy your vids for the most part, your sense of humor is refreshing even when I cringe once in a while lol, always makes me smile. I just had moment of throwing up a little in my mouth when you said how much you liked the endless excruciating harfoot farewells, lots of groaning and seething at our house;) You must have a more tender soul, this show made me root for Adar more than anyone else, sad!

My biggest complaint about the episode though given what was revealed, I think they should’ve done everything with the stranger up to “you are Sauron” before getting into the Halbrand reveal

Agreed. For some reason, the writers seem to have this compulsive need to be extremely explicit in their "reveals". They should trust the audience a bit more.

Well, i wanted to believe Halbrand wasnt Sauron because for the most part he seemed to be dragged along by Galadriel. But the moment i saw him on Celebrimbor's room, already healed i was sure he was Sauron. The dude rode for 6 days or whatever with a huge wound on his belly, with no treatment whatsoever...and Galadriel didnt suspect anything? A bit naive from her part, no human would survive that. The moment Halbrand said the word ''gift'' to Celebrimbor that sealed the deal for me. On the books he tricks Celebrimbor to craft the rings by disquising himself as a Lord of the GIFTS.
I also wanted to believe the stranger wasnt Gandalf. Maybe he was one of the Blue Wizards. Since their names are never mentioned in the books , maybe he would never learn his name, and he would meet the other Blue Wizard in Rhun...But then he drops that Gandalf line in Moria and im like '' god dang it...''

I'm all for slow story telling, but this finale was a completely different animal, with content that I felt should have lasted an entire season before the final reveal. They crammed way too much into this IMO.
