Ok so Rings Of Power Episode 5 has now dropped and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the plot, easter eggs and also what we think is gonna be happening on the next one. We're also gonna be going over our general thoughts on the series so make sure you stick around until the end for our review.
Now we start off with the Nori teaching language and the way of the Harfoots to The Stranger.
Really nice detail here is that he has a similar accent to them which is what he would sound like due to him learning how to talk from them.
I think it's becoming more and more clear that at the very least that he's a wizard due to the magical abilities that he demonstrates later on. I think due to Amazon keeping his identity a secret that he's likely Gandalf instead of one of the Blue Wizards who emmerged during this time. The Stranger learning about the cultures of the Harfoots could explain Gandalfs love for the Halflings later in life and due to their kindness we can see why he'd gravitate towards them. He's quite a conflicted character after realising that he's also a peril to this world and I think come the end of the season that he'll master his abilities.
Nori also brings up Cave Trolls which we've seen in live action in the Peter Jackson films.
Now I did discuss last week how I thought he might be Elronds father Earendil who too gets mentioned once more in this episode. The source material had him being a character that travelled out to Valinor and due to completing this journey he was raised up and entrusted with carrying a star across the sky. This could explain why he came crashing down in a starfall and also help to give some emotional closure to Elrond who wants to see him again.
I think it's more likely a Wizard but that's a super early Theory time for you summoffabich ass.
From here we get a banger of a song performed by Poppy that had me nodding away and beat boxing over the top of.

We don't know what they have access too of Tolkiens writings. However, if he's Gandalf we can assume they don't have access to the true origins of Gandalf. Saruman, Radagast, & Gandalf were all delivered to Middle Earth by Cirdan the Shipwright. If this is so they are trying to show Gandalf in his early stages after being diminished from a Maiar. When they were first transformed into an Ishtari they were like children. They didn't know their names, how to use magic, or even language. I suspect without access they're attempting to show the progression to wizard that actually happened in Valinor.

I absolutely like RoP better then the current GoT. I didn't have the same expectations(I'm a Silmarilion reader) for them. I HATED what HBO did with the original, so I don't trust them. Plus I find no likeable characters what so ever in GoT. Yes this was a filler episode that could have been better used, and been sped up. But I'm not going to let that f**k me up. I've been a Tolkien guy for 50 yrs, and no matter what that's never changing. Are they going to f**k some stuff up? Yes. Are they going to piss me off? Yes They are also going to get things right. I'm not stopping, no matter what.

He wrote stories of irredeemable evil creatures that only deserve death (orcs). No offense, but to dream up a story like this is NOT something I would be proud of. It's cruel and a fundamentally dangerous worldview. I'm happy about that being diluted, and delighted that the orcs are given a bit of a backstory. Still not rooting for them, but I do like it.

So someone’s probably already floated this theory someone, but are we sure that all of these stories are happening at the same point in time? I know we were originally thinking that Halbrand was Theo’s dad, but couldn’t Halbrand be adult Theo or Theo’s obnoxious friend? This would be like Westworld S1 where the Arondir and Bronwyn storyline is actually the oldest time in history, with the Galadriel and Elrond bulk of the story happening sometime afterwards, and the Harfoots/ Meteor Man plot represents the present day? This would mean that the Harfoot storyline could take place 1000 years after the Numenorians land in Middle-Earth and go to war, so Meteor Man being Gandalf would still line up.
Also this episode gave me the biggest eureka moment. I’ve read LOTR and The Hobbit but I’m not super knowledgeable on the lore so references will often go over my head. But this episode finally explained what Arwen giving away the Light of Elendil actually represents. My little nerd heart grew three times bigger when I figured out what Gal-Galad was plotting.

Canonically, Mithril doesn't hold the power that the Elves assign to it in Rings of Power; the Elves choosing to wear it as adornments and jewelry, rather than fashion arms and armor from it. Also Galadriel's ring is the only Ring of Power made of Mithril, though I suspect this may change once Celebrimbor finishes his forge tower in Eregion.

I gotta respectfully disagree with you..! I quite like the slower pace and a lot of the things you disliked, I rather enjoyed. Showing Galadriel entirely consumed by her hatred and the war is setting the foundation of who she'll develop into. With so many series rushing through the story they want to tell, I enjoy the slower pace. It does, however, have the pace of a season with far more episodes, and I can imagine us getting to the end of the season with a lot more left for season 2.
I do agree that it is unfortunate that it airs next to House of the Dragon, considering that it compares poorly to that show...!

In fairness we know Galadriel is obsessed, it's like the start of her story, and even if it weren't telegraphed by the show we see her going of go "dark mode" in the movies for a moment which kinda suggests she's got some demons. As for the idea that some of the training scene was unnecessary: If the show's going to be on for several seasons and half of it has been invented because the books they have rights to are thin on infor, they need to keep this going by adding detail to the characters stories, otherwise it'd be just an assortment of clips, and montages.

Gosh, how do you get such a great overview and review together - and a very funny one -- in such a short time? Yes, the heavy duty critics drive me nuts, too; often complaining that they didn't source from the canon in the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Right, but Amazon didn't have rights to these texts. Peter Jackson, in comparison, was spoiled by an epic story and the dialogue of a literature professor. That being said, there's lots to grumble about -- like the flammable Nazgul and racist Elrond in Fellowship. But I've decided to be a glass half full person, especially after seeing Ralph Bakshi's LOTR as a kid (over 40 years ago) and finding it the biggest text to screen let-down in history. I'm content to cope with the pacing because, Hell, imagine trying to turn The Silmarillion into a television series? So much of Tolkien's work is like the Bible: details of events, battles, genealogies, etc. and no real narrative arc or character development (as opposed to The Hobbit and LOTR, which he created as literature, not pre-history).

While I enjoy House of the Dragon, rings of power is cool because it returns to something that we have been familiar with over the last 10 or 15 years.( at least cinematically) I know they have made up some characters here and there but even still I like the further exploration of things like Mithril… and seeing for the first time in some sort of a live action format the explanation and further development of the sil marills with that being said, this last episode I agree with you that it did not seem to move the story along and to your point they only have so many episodes and they’re very expensive to make so don’t pull a Kenobi and waste time. I do enjoy both house of dragon and this show for different reasons, And hope they continue to make this show into another season. There is too much characterization within his "struggle," when we see him alone he acts according to his apparent ruse which would be extremely manipulative of the writers to do as Halbrand can't know we are watching. Why would he pretend to be this "reluctant king" character when it would only serve to fool us? Maybe the writers are massive assholes but I think it is largely more likely he's not Sauron.
I am starting to think these big "twists" we are anticipating aren't going to happen at all. The mystery of who the stranger is might stem entirely from the fact we don't know for sure, the show isn't in a hurry to tell, and we have to wait a week between episodes. Maybe Sauron is the stranger as the show is transparently trying to make us think. Is the show giving us obvious clues (but not explicit) letting us overthink our brains to mush, then making it the simplest answer in a reverse kind of subversion? I can't decide if that would be the biggest dick move ever or the only real possible form of twist one can achieve in an age of obsessive scrutiny.

Sauron is non excisting in this show, the only reason people think Halbrand = Sauron is using sources completely from outside the show, nl what the know from reading Tolkien himself or leaked info. Unless one want to consider the ranting of Karendriel as a source.
when she yells that Sauron killed her brother, it immideately refers to outside knowledge.... the text of the Silmarillion.... but in this show Sauron is completely undefined and a character without any shape or substance.
Peter Jackson at least gave Sauron a shape and a menace by showing the Battle of the Last Allieance at the start of the LoTR. When Sauron was mentioned the audience had thechange to fall back on what and whom Sauron was. That does not happen here. The audience has no Sauron image to fall back on coming from the show, but has to fall back on Peter Jackson's work. Just a product of bad and lazy writing, which gives the impression the whole storyboard was thrown together a week before filming an episode.

I really dont understand the hate people has on this, agree that the series might have a pacing issue that they need to figure out how balance, but Im sure that if they were going to fast people would be saying "is too fast doesnt make sense", and the same whatever direction they'd take...also I dont understand why pin the series vs HotD, almost expecting one to mirror the other, like X characther is the Rhaenyra or X characther is Deamon, I actually like how they are different from the other and we get little elements to compare on, also I like the fact that I get two fantasy set series to enjoy each week that feel different from the other, now in the real world when it comes to ratings and money for sure they'll be compared, but if you are really watching for the content and being a nerd I dont think thats an important issue. Its the first season and they have 1000s of years to cover and millions of angry fans if something goes to far off (we saw it with GoT's ending), so if the main complain is that is boring or slow pacing, I dont think it deserves to be hated that much, if anything reminds me of reading Tolkien and reading like 4 pages where nothing happened but you got a detailed description of what was around the characters, or a deep conversation, or a lesson of arda history, I've only read The Silmarilion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings but so far I dont feel they have done something that would "offend" the source material, true that the episodes are feeling kinda slow but the level of detail and places, and how everything looks also should be praised in a way. I hope the events and the story becomes more exciting towards the end, but I wouldnt blame them for even using season 1 as a very long origins act as long as the story they tell is exciting and engaging, I just hope for the best and for them to pull it off instead of ruining something that had a lot of potential.

It's not even about the fact that they butchered Tolkien's legendarium anymore, it's just objectively badly written TV at this point. ...where writers sprinkled in some proper nouns from Tolkien's world, added modern politics, and expected everyone to like it because they spent a stupid amount of money producing it. At least with HotD, Martin is still alive and could have a say in how his story is adapted to screen. I love the relationship between the elf and dwarf. They still are friends after he told the truth behind his visit. Galdrial has passion but lacks tact. Why should she though. She knows she is better than man and there is something out there! I didn’t know the stowaway kid was the dude that could not let go of the ring. I would like to see how Elrond and him come together later on. I want to know who the creepy alien folk on the hilltop are too and of that is Gandalf. Just like all six moves this show drags on too but it’s so good. I hope they are making their money back.

I was picking up all the Halbrand-is-Sauron hints this show was dropping, but after this episode I honestly don't know. Sauron might not even be anywhere at this point in the series. I think the only real problem this show has is that unlike LOTR and the Hobbit, we're not seeing things from the pov of hobbits, who are frankly the most entertaining characters Tolkien wrote. His humans and elves tend to be pretty boring. We need more wizards, dwarves, and halflings to keep things interesting. I like the stuff with the Harfoots and Durin's folk, the rest of it is only okay.

What if Sauron is there. This is a film makers medium which mean time does not always have to run concurrently. What if all the signs that The Stranger were Annatar was true? What if the writers pulled a "Witcher" and the Harfoot/Stranger plotline happened way before all others since it is one of the most isolated plotlines in the series. Then in a future episode when it is revealed what is actually going on behind Gil-Galad and Celebrimbor's secret grand plan we see The Stranger, clean and shaven, have been whispering to both of them all along. Cut to credits. End of episode.

It's pretty, but it's also pretty dumb.
The script is bad. The acting is suss. It's all very pantomime.
It makes House of the Dragons look super-smart, subtle.
(Like, what is Pharazon's son doing in a fishing boat in the middle of the night? How the fuck could that be explained away?)
If this has any hope of continuing for several more years, they're going to have to seriously rework it.
It needs a new showrunner, writers... they need to lose the PG-13 mindset.

Resisting the ring took the rest of what she had in the tank. You see she needed the Light of Earendil to banish Sauron from Dol Guldur (and she gave that to Frodo!) She couldn't have done it on her own. Honestly, magic doesn't need to be used just for the sake of looking cool or using it.

And getting a little more taste for Tolkien stories. And I have the added bonus, of getting my fantasy/drama/action fix without wasting money adding HBO to my cable bill just to watch House of Dragon. I already have Prime membership so I don’t have to spend anymore. I will probably do exactly as I did to watch the last 2 seasons of GOT. I waited till the series was over, then signed up for HBO/Max app. Then I binged watched every episode in order and was done within a couple of weeks. Then I’d cancel the HBO/Max app and only end up paying for one month worth of access. The app is far better than adding it to my cable bill, I could pull up any movie and watch it whenever I wanted. I think the cable service is a huge ripoff, so I’m not adding anything I can’t cancel whenever I want to. 😉
