    Hey Rob - I know this is a super old video, and it’s very probably you’ve figured this out by now, but just in case not, the reason you’re struggling to get the double in there is because you actually have the base sticking incorrect, with regards to the actual Blushda. It is in fact very subtlety different to the Swiss triplet. It’s actually closer to a left hand Flam Accent, which never alternates and stays on the left side. So:
    rL r L - rL r L - rL r L - rL r L
    This creates slightly more space between the two right hand notes, and allows more time to double up that second one of the phrase.
    Not taking anything away from what you’re offering up here, because this is also a great lick, and your application of it is hip as hell. Just thought it could be a useful but if info to add on for the sake of accuracy when talking specifically about the Blushda, and also as just an alternate take of what you got going on!

      Thanks for that kind comment, i was wondering about that too. I'm also a big fan of Rob and his channel, but i think the blushda we all know or maybe mean is just a different sticking (which you have written out perfectly). Besides that, Robs idea is cool too 😉 Greetings and all the best from Germany!

    Great tip Rob. This lick has eluded me for years, until about a year ago when it finally clicked. This is a great idea and it does sound amazing.

    Yes, so as stated below, the sticking doesn't relate to the original blush-da and thus, applied with the toms, it also doesn't sound the same.. but apart from that it is a good variation (and its simplification) anyway and the playing is cool. Thanks!

    So basically this is what so many DCI marching drummers do: play the check instead of the written music to keep it clean. That's what's up!
    I think it's still important to work on getting the actual lick up to the faster tempo, but this is great for now. Thanks man!

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  8 лет назад +1

      +Michael Scott This is definitely the lazy version, man. But I say if the lazy version sounds the same, why not. But yea, go ahead and work on the original, as it's great for the hands.

      +Rob “Beatdown” Brown I'm not sure if I like calling it the lazy version, but I got what you mean totally.

    • @franciskoh295
      @franciskoh295 7 лет назад

      what is playing the check?

    • @NerismaStudios
      @NerismaStudios 7 лет назад +2

      Playing the check is basically simplifying a pattern to make it clean. With marching band of DCI stuff, commonly it's playing a normal accented note instead of a flam (very similar to what Rob demonstrates here). For DCI, it's a nice little way to trick the judges into thinking everyone is playing the same thing cleanly, when it may not be exactly that (which works well since their grace notes in DCI range from 1/2" to no more than 1" off the drumhead)

    The first time that this rudiment really made an impression on me was when I first heard Gavin Harrison and Weckl do it. The way Beatdown Brown plays it is what I always thought I heard when I listened to these guys. After delving into this more, I see that there are several variations of not only the Blushda but also other flam triplet variations. Just goes to show you how much of an innovator Tony Williams was.

      Glad to hear someone give the credit to Whom it's due. The (blushda) is 'TONYS'💩!! 🤨 All these references to white 'TONY WILLIAMS' lick theives, and imposters, ..gets to be disrespectful and disgusting!!🤮 We 'all' play Tonys' shit, so stop crediting Gadd, Weckl,Caliuta, JoJo,etc. Why are they ALLWAYS mentioned, if you're talking about the so called 'blushda' as well as other HIP DRUM SHIT, you're Talking about "TONY WILLIAMS" Period!!🤨 Any and All the hip shit those other drummers play came from Tony and 'his' influences. Orchestrating and camouflaging his Licks doesn't change where it came from!! Jis sayin'🥁!!--"FREE BILL COSBY" And All Innocent BlackAmericanDOS, Political Prisoners of W/S!!

    The first time I heard it was played by Gary Novak on Chick Corea's CTA track.
    Gary plays some furious grooves and applies the "blushda" on a few ocasions.
    great stuff!

    • @drummerboy1475
      @drummerboy1475 9 лет назад

      Drummerboy Sorry Rob, NOT the blushda. Your initial interpretation of the blushda is incorrect. The blushda sticking is as follows.:
      lR l l R ( Flam left left Right ) repeat over a triplet feel for starters. All flams are right handed flams. Or, play the blushda starting with a left hand flam : rL rr R. You have misinterpreted and misplayed the blushda by playing the double on the same hand as the flam. Same notation, different sticking. Also, Your simpified blushda is just a Swiss triplet. Check out Steve Holmes at House of Drumming for a great demonstration of the blushda. He plays it and explains it clearly. You might even discover if you play the blushda correctly you can play it easily at faster speeds than your original interpretation.I think you are a really good player and I hope using the "BLUSHDA" word over nine times in this post doesn't lead to hating other words as well. I'm sure Todd Sucherman dislikes the way you pronounce his name.Show less

    • @BobSchoepenjr
      @BobSchoepenjr 5 лет назад

      Hi Drummerboy and Thomas: at HIGHER tempos the symplified BLUSHDA goes like this starting on the one:
      rL R L rL R L rL R L rL R L / again 1 ( only this you can play on HIGHER speed) Take care!

    • @JackBennettDrums
      @JackBennettDrums 5 лет назад +11

      Nope. A Swiss Army Triplet is rL L R or the exact opposite. With the Blushda you start with what Gavin Harrison calls the "left flam triplet", which is: rL R L, then from there you double the middle R into 2 x 16th triplets. Resulting in the Blushda, which is: rL RR L repeated.

    • @dankenton
      @dankenton 5 лет назад +5

      Looks like Rob is playing lR R L which IS a right Swiss Army Triplet. @@JackBennettDrums

    • @christophegragnic8681
      @christophegragnic8681 4 года назад +1

      Which would not result in a «real blushda». I agree with both Jack Bennett and M Sully here. For the real one you should try a single sided «flam accent». I'm currently trying blushding on the two sides: four single sided «flam accents» on the left and four on the right. Then I'll add the roll.

      I play the "Swiss Army Triplet" alternating like this: rL R L lR L R. For the fake blushda I play rL R L. For the real blushda I play "rL rr L". All with additional kick when hitting cymbals.

    Just because something is hard doesn’t mean you find another way to play it because this doesn’t sound like a blushda.

  • @stephaniegrow2001
    @stephaniegrow2001 3 года назад

    Steve Holmes is teaching the blushda with the flam reversed from what Rob is doing here.
    Holmes: rL R L rL R L rL R L rL R L. (Flam Accent)
    Brown: lR R L lR R L lR R L lR R L. (Swiss Army Triplet)
    Swiss Army Triplet is easier to execute, but the Flam Accent sounds the best in my opinion. I actually think the Flam Accent spaces out the mechanics better, allowing for the blushda double stroke.

  • @stevedirocco1
    @stevedirocco1 3 года назад +1

    I like the simplified version but the original with the doubles does make a huge difference you should strive to do the doubles as it is going to increase your dexterity on your right hand or left whichever type of flam you do.. and remember to always keep the Flames wide open like a drag ..big open flam's! Good job breaking this down and simplifying it..start with this version ..than proceed to the origional. Once you have it you can apply both methods for even more explosive fills.
