    Bill shows you how to install a KEE Auto Top One-Piece Vinyl Convertible Top with a Plastic Window on your 1994-2004 Mustang.

    Absolutely American made, this KEE Auto Top Convertible Top is for the 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 or 2004 Mustang. Owning a Mustang convertible can be great, especially on nice summer days. But one of the downsides is replacing the convertible top every 10-15 years. This was an install that was just a little too much for the average Mustang enthusiast. KEE understood this and released a one-piece convertible top that is much easier to install, and today, we're going to show you how to do it.

    GREAT video! My wife and I could not have replaced the top on our 2001 Mustang without it. The one page instructions that came with the top are rather brief, and we would have been lost if we used only that. A couple of tips we found:
    1. It's OK to cut away the old top to gain access to the nuts in the back. No reason to fold yourself into the back seat and fight the top you're going to throw away anyway.
    2. Remove the 3 piece trim before removing the top, even though Bill says you don't need to. You have to remove it later in the install, so just do it during the removal.
    3. lightly sand and paint the 3 piece metal body trim with a flat black paint after removal. It'll really look good next to the new top.
    4. If you accidentally detach the OTHER end of the wire/spring that attaches to the brass grommet on the new top, you can remove the fake side triangular air intake body molding to gain access to where the other end clips into the body.
    5. Take pictures as you remove trim, screws, weather stripping, put the screws/bolts into separate paper cups and label them.
    6. Definitely use a power stapler.
    7. Don't use spray adhesive, use some brush on contact adhesive.
    8. Using a stubby torx ratchet is a must.

    I guess you know by now, but for those who don't, you don't have to remove the interior quarter panels to remove the exterior trim. If you use a regular phillips screwdriver it will hold the beltline weatherstrip out of the way while you unscrew those two screws. Thanks for making the video. Really liked it.

    Thanks for the video! Replaced the top on a 97 using this video and it turned out flawless! I was worried the aftermarket top would leave me with wrinkles, indents, or more problems. But after installing it and tightening everything down, it was smooth and looked good as new! Also, the large window has a much wider view than the original glass panel, minimizing the large blind-spots with the top up. Overall, great product and very helpful video showing how to install it.

    Oh yeah, When it came to the loopholes in the side with the spring loaded wire… Are used a coat hanger to loop through it before I tried to undo it so I didn’t lose it. It was very helpful because when I went to reattach the new top it also gave me something to hang onto while I Worked at putting the loop through the hole in the new top! Just a little helpful hint for anyone if it works

    i just did a two piece top on my 1997 mustang gt. this video was a life saver. it was my first time doing the roof. yes a two piece is a little different it basically is the same just more time consuming putting the rear part of the roof on. it staples in the same spots as this roof just you have to do it for the window then the roof. most new roofs come pre-marked and pre-cut. and now like the KEE one piece has the sleeves for the bow to make it easier to so you don't have to stretch each section then staple it down to the bow. If you are going to attempt to put a roof on your car. I do recommend the two piece roof as it is the original style and what the car was designed to have. However the one piece roof is just as good and if you prefer that style thats fine. the two piece roof takes just as long as the one piece with them being so much alike to put on which with no experience putting a roof on took me 5 hours over the course of 2 days in 105 degree heat. this video really does tell you basically how to put on both styles of roofs for this car. if you have any questions about the two piece roof id be glad to answer them. but the video pretty much tells you everything that you need to know for putting both roofs on other then the two piece roof you have to put the back window on starting at the top then staple it to the bottom tack strips that you bolt to your trunk and be sure to measure the distance of the top bow to the tack strip before you remove old roof so you put the new one on tight enough.

    For never installing one before, pretty good job. one of our biggest issues was putting in the bows. The top has NO premade holes. If you have a second set of bows that will help you alot!
    We are still working on this job, working slow and trying to not get too angry.

    • @jackwolff9534
      @jackwolff9534 3 года назад +1

      We likewise found the Bows to be very frustrating since there are no holes in the sleeves in the top. All in all it took us 22 hours to install the new Top. The bows were the most frustrating all of the tension cables at the bottom on each side were also a challenge. The video skips what to do with the tension cables so we just cut the old top since it was coming out and left the tension cables attached at the front. I would strongly recommend other first time installers buy some extra parts because we had parts that failed as we did our installation. For example the rear tack strips those three aluminum plates, two of the plastic covered nuts crushed those in two spots without ever tightening, and one of the plastic covered nuts split and came off the nut before it tightened as well. Also be wary of dropping tools and parts into the frame/fender well at the rear window. Any items dropped in there are very difficult to retrieve.

    Great video as usual. One hint. leave the top lay out in the sun for a couple hours, maybe over another car roof, as you are disassembling the old top. This loosens the new top, and flattens out the folds and waves from being in a box for months.

    First of all, i am not a handy man at ALL, but my son and I followed your vid and after some good hours and couple stress moments we did replace it. Once we finished, it wouldn't lock all the way but i left it some hours under the sun and helped stretched the roof down. Got a lil tiny leak somewhere in the back inside,but i will disassemble the back retainer and check the cause. Other than that you helped us saving at least $350 labor. I replaced my top about 10 years ago and something I learned. When you are removing the retention spring on the side, use a pair of VISEGRIP needle nose pliers because if you use regular needle nose they may slip off resulting in you punching yourself in the face, breaking your nose and having a whistling snot-locker for a month.
    Ask me how I learned that.

    NOTE if you have a Mustang GT the roll bar will need to be negotiated when removing the rear interior quarter panels Outside of that... This video is very detailed .. I would recommend actually taking pics of your removal steps as well to be able to reference how things go back as the video isn't perfect BUT its pretty spot on. Use every tool they list we didn't and it cost us some aggravation and time and pre plan exactly where you will store the massive number of screws such as little envelopes with a description of where they came from and place them out of the way .. AVOID doing this around young kids .. they love to watch and well be kids... Not toddlers BUT the 8 - 15 year old crowd LOL ... we did manage and top looks great.

    That stapler needs a little more oomph. I'm about halfway through this job, loving every minute, thanks CJ Pony!

    • @rosscoyer7611
      @rosscoyer7611 3 года назад

      Update, I finished the job this morning, but am having trouble closing the top. It's coming up short/tight about an inch. I glued and stapled the front of the top the length that was recommended in the video. I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and if the top will stretch? Side note, I am in Northern MN and it is currently 20 degrees outside. Unheated garage. Obviously this probably has something to do with it, but just wondering if I will have to shorten the connection in the front to make up the difference or if the top does stretch when it warms up?
      Otherwise, the job went well. A few takeaways for anyone thinking about trying this. It is a VERY tedious job. Lots of tight spaces, pieces, parts, places to lose screws and tools... You will need a variety of tools, wrenches, a big work space and extra hardware likely. The little ratchet he uses in the video, or something similar, is imperative. Also make sure to order a set of clips and a clip tool if you don't have one. You will need it as well.
      One recommendation I would make, if you could center the top properly I would have attached the middle bow first. Getting the small screws started that hold the headliner on after the window flap is stapled on is a BEAR. I could be overlooking something, but it would have been much easy to attach that bow had the window flap not been stapled on the rear bow yet.
      The clip spring tensioners are a challenge as well. I found that once I got the clip undone with a set of very long shafted needle nose pliers and a slotted screw driver, I bent the clip wide open which made it long enough to reach through the hole in the new top. I then bent it back into shape which tightened it up nicely.
      I stripped several of the nuts that hold the tack strip on and had to use vice grips to tighten them. Shame on them for using a plastic housing. I used 3/8" staples on the rear bow, and 1/4" staples on the front.
      As I read in an earlier comment. It is easier to take out the back seat and inside quarter panels right off the bat. Thank you to the guy who recommended that.
      Anyway, by myself, it was about a 12 hour job. Very fun, the car looks great. Thanks again Bill and CJ Pony Parts!
      -Ross

Those plastic bolts are 14 millimeter splined socket... Broke one of the plastic nuts, took it to Home Depot, it’s a M6.1 replacer that with a wingnut and a washer... They should make a bolt on replacement for the whole top headliner shit would save hours and frustration. But like anybody else I’m not going to pay some dude a $1000.00 to put on a $195.00 part.

    Going to do a very, very, very thorough review and commentary on this
    Short version: This is a project that should be done slowly and I wouldn't recommend rushing it unless you /absolutely/ have to. If you have a garage you can shack it up in; you will thank yourself for doing it. It will go on just fine so long as you follow his instructions; but you don't have to necessarily follow them in order. Will explain in the more thorough review. Overall great piece and exceptional video. If you're rushing, this may take you a good 12hrs to complete so long as you're doing it with some care.
    ==== SHORT VERSION ENDS HERE ====
    This video does a very good job explaining how to put this together. Unfortunately for me (and maybe you, too) my car is definitely not in as good of shape as Bill's is and that was evident when I took this together. If car has seen some better days; this is an excellent opportunity to take a look at your convertible top frame and to replace worn out parts. But
    BEWARE! There are smaller parts on this that aren't reproduced and some that aren't even made anymore. The nuts that attach the rear liner that Bill shows at 8:35 aren't in production anymore, sadly. And if yours were stripped to beat hell like mine were; you'll have to take extra steps to preserve them and get them off properly. I've found that if you have a 13mm socket; they will snugly fit over these and work them perfectly. In addition; if you don't have an upholstery tool like Bill uses at 17:40; a flathead screwdriver barely works; but i'd recommend using the claw end of a claw hammer to very gently work them out instead. If you happen to accidentally throw out a short side piece of your tack strip; it can be replaced with strips of rubber epoxy'd on top of themselves and drilled through to attach the top to the body.
    As for me, I absent mindedly put it on from the back forwards. And while it does make it somewhat easier to put on the rest; I will admit that attaching the head liner to the middle bow is a gigantic pain in the ass to do if you decide to take the path that I did. When it comes to holding things like Bill had his assistant do; just use some squeeze-clamps and it'll work just fine for you. You don't need any help doing this.
    All in all; you /will/ have some problems doing this; but you /will/ be able to fix them yourself. Best of luck to those of you who have decided to do a surprise overhaul on your '96-04 mustang like I did!

      I agree with you 100% great time to get new rubber seals also as Mine did not hold up as well as expected BUT that's an easy fix in comparison yes the nuts that attach the rear tack strip use a 13mm which I thought he mentioned a9/16?? Any Hoo I used a laptop with this video downloaded from youtube and had it right there with me.

    Thanks for the video Bill, very helpful. It appears you did not staple the rear edge of the fabric top @ the trunk, to the long 3-piece rectangle shaped staple bar. You only used the nuts to squish the bar against the top material. Why is that? Was that staple bar only used (with staples) in conjunction with the 2-piece top with glass window? The only staples you used were at the rear crossbar ( I read other comments 3/8" Stainless Staples), and you stapled the very end at the front of the vehicle (1/4" Stainless staples). Others beware when removing old top to take time and remove each staple, as you can easily break that 1/4" thick plastic staple strip, which is only riveted every foot or so to the metal frame.
    I also noticed you did not use any glue for the fabric, under those vertical molding pieces that get screwed in, as it appeared when I removed my top, there was remnants of glue there. Do you suggest using glue at the trunk behind the fabric top? Or just squish it under the many nut/ bolt connections? Thanks again.

    yup , lucky his mustang looks new inside mine in the back where you have all the screws they were rusted one broken , had to replace all the rusted tension cables , headliner and well liner took 2 days and yes it is alot of work but if you follow his method seems too work pretty good just when you put your top up make sure the main support lines up with seam you can adjust with staple gun if needed .. if you get pressure points or dents in plastic window from shipping a heat gun lightly will straighten it out .. next time will go with glass , the plastic gets old and scratches easy just use water and a little soap with microfiber soft cloth too clean paper towels will scratch plastic and keep it away from well and sprinkler water will stain plastic ... oh these tops do not last 10 years especially in florida heat and sun ! keep your car covered and will last much longer

    Perhaps one of my favorite videos on this channel. I bought at '98 GT convertible where the previous owner has replaced the top but really should have watched this video. I got him to knock off $500 and then I fixed it following these instructions. This guy was a moron. Almost all the nuts and bolts were missing. Thankfully my local pic-n-pull has several convertibles I could use for parts. Mine has the glass rear window that separate and he didn't even staple the top of the window panel to the back bow. He bought a rear window with defroster but the car never has one before. Again thanks to the junk yard so I could pull the cables and switch. The car was already prewired. Wish it was prewired for the Mach 460 system. My only issue I have with the top is the front where you glue the sides and clamp. I used the 3-M yellow adhesive and clamped for about 8 hrs. Still doesn't seem flat enough and when the top is down you see the ugly yellow glue. Any suggestions?

    Once i got the springs hooked onto the top, it refused to close properly. At the height where it should latch onto the windshield, there is about an inch gap in between the hooks and the hooking spot on the windshield. Can someone explain why this would happen?

    • @cjponyparts
      @cjponyparts  Год назад

      A brand new top will have to be stretched when installed so it's common for a small gap to be there requiring you to pull down on the latches to close the top. I recommend closing the top and letting it sit in the sun for a few days.

    • @amitoj7803
      @amitoj7803 Год назад

      @@cjponyparts thank you for your response. I wanted to clary that the inch gap is when the top is fully extended in its closed position. The metal prongs next to the latches, that go into the holes are still behind and so the only thing stopping my top from falling into my car is my front seats. I think it has something to do with the frame not aligning right but I dont see how that could happen since I haven’t done anything to the frame except disconnect the hydraulic cylinders for easy raising and lowering while fixing. It would be a lot more helpful if I was able to provide a picture/video to show you the extent of the issue

    Mr. Tumas,
    This is a fine instructional video. I have a need to replace the original (leaking) convertible top for my 2004 Mustang GT. May I ask one question? Does this top - "Mustang KEE Auto Top One Piece Convertible Top 1994-2004" as shown in this video - accept the "KEE Auto Top Convertible Top Glass Window With Defroster And Sailcloth Vinyl Surround"? My Mustang has a glass window with a defroster feature that I would like to retain when I replace when I replace my original convertible top with a new, KEE top. I suspect that it does not. If that is so - it does not - does KEE offer a replacement convertible top that will accept the glass window with defroster?
    Many thanks for your reply...

    I understand the Termi top is cloth and more expensive but how can one top be for 99-04 and the next one be 01-04? Okay so you don't need to take off quarter panels you can just use a screwdriver and go in from the top and get the screws also I would recommend putting on the 2nd crossbar bow thing before stapling down the flap above the window because you'll have one hell of a time trying to put the screws into the bow from underneath so it would just be easier to be able to fold over the back and have easy access to the screws. Also be careful taking off and putting on the tac strips in the back because you can funk up the threads on the studs. Lastly i never needed the t10 star bit and on my 2003 it needed a t30 star bit not a t27.
