    Aaah... I finally learned how to hard pan the layers on the REV 2...It was an issue that was puzzling me for a long time...Thanks for the tip. I used to create the binaural effect by just using the two Left outputs of the A&B pair of outputs. It works fine as well and is kind of a quicker method (if you have easy access to the back of the synth). But overall...what a great synth. It can do so many things and despite its fame, its true potential remains underated.

    Peter, thank you so much for doing the legwork to discover and demonstrate this REV2 capability. It's like paying a whole new synth! Yes, I'm 2 years late to the party and my REV2 has been sitting largely unloved in my keyboard rack for ages - superseded by the likes of my Prophet 10 and OB-X8. Interestingly enough, it was the Version 2.0 OB-X8 OS that dropped this week from Sequential/Oberheim that prompted me to look at binaural capabilities of the REV2. As you're probably aware, V2 of the OB-X8 firmware has a new "Instant Binaural" feature, and it sounds brilliant! Unfortunately, it also cuts the meager 8-voice polyphony on the OB-X8 down to 4 binaural voices 😥. Thanks for giving my REV2 a new lease on life. REV2 and OB-X8 both in binaural mode are an ambient/epic dream team! Mammoth Pads sound set purchased and installed! Cheers!

    Nice vid, Peter! Love stereophonic/binaural patches on Rev2!... you can get such huge sound. +/-32 is actually the full value needed for hard pan... of course more works as well for hard pan, but as reference point, that's where it clips, so if you wanna scale back, that's where the action happens.

    Absolutely brilliant Peter. I've owned almost every Sequential synth (among many others) and this is why the Rev2 is one of my favorites: true stereo architecture! I love the core tone of the Prophet 5 & 6 and the OB-6, but like you said, there's no way to get true stereo out of them. The only real way to do it is to track them twice with slightly different settings, then pan the two takes apart. Huge wast of time. I was REALLY hoping the new Prophet 10 reissue would allow for this, but it's still cramming everything through a MONO output, unlike the original double manual Prophet 10. huge missed opportunity! Anyway, great stuff here!

    Great procedure.I have a slightly different approach which saves me a MOD slot: The REV2 has 2 stereo outputs, Main A and B. The manual says that if no cables are connected to B, then A carries both Layers. If you also connect cables to B, then layer A is output at Main A and layer B at Main B. Say that I have 4 free mixer inputs (instead of 2 like in your examples) and pan the pairs accordingly hard left and hard right (in my case, an X32 where each song has its dedicated scene), then the result is also binaural, without sacrificing a MOD slot or doing any other edits. Correct me if I'm wrong. I guess the effects section might sound better stereo-wise with your approach.

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, that works, though you have to have a 4 channel mixer with pans ready. Whatever works and feels good for the situation is the right choice IMO!

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  3 года назад +2

      Save Edit B saves the state of the "Edit Layer B" button when a patch is saved. If its unlit then the panel is editing layer A. If lit, then Layer B. If you hold it until it blinks, then the panel edits both layer A and B simultaneously. If you are using a layered patch like this, i find it useful to have it stay in the blinking mode, so its always editing both layers when i pull up a patch. If you have "Save edit B" off in globals, then regardless of what state the "edit layer B" button is in when you save it, then it defaults back to unlit (only edit layer A). They both have their uses.

      This was using a 16-voice, but its possible with an 8. It cuts the voice count in half, since it splits to each stereo side, so with a 16 voice, you have 8 playable notes,, and then with an 8voice, you have 4 playable notes. I enjoy having the extra breathing room of the 16 personally

      Hey man, I would go for the rev 2 ,I researched poly synth for 3 months straight starting with the Take5, then prophet 5 6 and 10 and OB6 and I snubbed the rev 2 at first as it is DCO however .....I explored the rev2 reviews and it has so much capability, its a no brainer. Spend a little more and you will be well rewarded. From a price point there is no other poly that can really compete, Novation is excellent but Novation owners have been switching to the rev2.

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, yes you can. It cuts the voices in half for either since you are using a voice per stereo side. So 16 voices = 8 playable voices. And 8 = 4.

    Great, I've been doing this kind of thing with the Prophet 12 for a long time... so the Super 6, while being a really cool synth, didn't sell me via the "binaural" feature.

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  3 года назад +1

      Indeed, also a quiet feature/hack on our P12's! The super6 still looks great, and kudos to them for making it a single button to do. It's especially great on these boards with high voice counts. I would love to see other brands pick up a binaural button like the Super-6 to make the process a faster one. Novation Summit has polyphonic Unison Spread value in a menu that's similar, but also takes some dialing in.

    Do I have the half of voices after this? Btw. can I play only 4 voices on this patch with an rev2-8 for example?

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  Год назад +1

      yes, it cuts the voices in half, since one is going Left and the other going Right simultaneously. If you have an 8 voice Rev2, then it'd be a 4 voice patch. The preset library shared in this video has both binaural, and regular versions in case you have an 8 voice and don't want to half the voices.

      Hi, no the delay times do not go short enough to do phase shifting like that with the digital or analog emulation delays. But there is a phaser, flanger, and chorus effect available.

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  3 года назад +1

      I've run into phase cancelling by doing it that way on other synths, so i prefer the width using this layer stacking method instead which is discrete per side.

    can you achieve binaural with the Prophet 6?

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  3 года назад +4

      not polyphonically, but yes, in unison mode. Turn on Unison. Hold Unison to show how many voices are on in that made, and then press the "tens" button to increase the amount. 2 is a good start. Set Pan spread clockwise to the max. Now you have two seperate voices on each side playing at the same time. You can increase the difference between them by increasing the "Slop" amount.

    • @peterkeys88
      @peterkeys88  6 месяцев назад

      @@Sam_Utah Yes, it works fine on an 8voice, but since it cuts your voice count in half using both timbres for the ultrawide binaural effect, then a 16-voice becomes an 8-voice, and an 8voice becomes a 4-voice which can be limiting. There's also an export in there for regular non-binaural use, which also sounds great, just not as superwide - still wide though!

      the simplest way would be to reduce the "DC" mod slot back to 0, and press the layer button so that its just one layer again (no B).
