How To Create A Buck Herd On Your Land

  • If you want to see more bucks on your land, then you need to learn to become a deer manager instead of a habitat manager. While there are 10s of thousands of us who call ourselves deer managers for small parcels, there are very few who actually are. After all, if you do not have the oldest bucks in the neighborhood on your land during the daylight in the Fall, you don't have anything to actually manage. That's why if you follow this advice about the basics of deer management, you can become one of the few herd influencers in the neighborhood.
How can you make sure that you build the best daylight herd in the neighborhood? Check out my latest web class:
    www.whitetailhabitatsolutions...
After you become the neighborhood influencer,, make sure that you are following my weather forecast deer hunting predictions when you finally head to the woods. Check out HuntCast, at:

Jeff, I think the best point you make in this video is “best potential “ for your particular area and parcel. My West Virginia mountain property is not going to produce 160 + class bucks on a consistent basis. Too much hunting pressure in the area to create that opportunity. However, I do know the potential is there to produce and hold mature bucks that can reach 140 class on a yearly basis. I think a lot of land owners fall into the unrealistic expectations of what they can actually produce, and I think a lot of that is because of the “deer hunting shows” where the hosts constantly shoot 180-200 class bucks. That’s why I appreciate your channel here. You keep it real and actually teach us how to improve our land and hunts. Your the only “deer hunting show” host I listen to and watch. Good luck this season Jeff. West Virginia bow starts a week from today…best time of the year!!

So true RS, this is definitely all relative. Crazy how in some locations it is easier to shoot a 200" than a 140. I appreciate your comments...thank YOU!

Know when I learned I was a deer influencer?
When all the locals started surrounding my land, telling me my property is where all the deer are, especially the big bucks.
Then.... I had to become adapt at not spooking those deer off my property during hunting season and into the arms of mobs of waiting hunters.

Y'all are lucky. Up here in New Brunswick, there is no deer season during the rut. Peak breeding is December 10 which makes the two weeks before this period prime hunting. Our deer season ends Nov. 21-22 most years. To make matters worse, the hunt is mostly a buck hunt so ending the season before the rut excludes access to many mature bucks.

To be truthful my food plots here in Tennessee aren't really attractive to deer until the native vegetation has died and turned brown. Thats when the deer really hit my plots. The nice green food plots look so inviting up against the brown vegetation and naked trees. The trees drop their leave late and the grass and fields stay green up into late October early November. Friend of mine in Michigan tells me the white oaks are dropping acorns in West Branch but ours are still holding pretty tight in central Tennessee. The persimmons trees are the hot food source at the moment. I guess what im trying to say is that I don't depend on my food plots until the end of October early November. For the first month of bow season I hunt native vegetation because of the fact we dont have any agg fields close by. Mostly CRP and cattle pasture.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

They hammer the greens up here when the acorns are dropping...they really need that moisture. I have clients right now in TN enjoying the deer pounding green based food plots. Much, much more digestible and higher volume than native vegitation this time of year...really depends on what you plant tho!

The older bucks seem to not show up till around mid October till the end of November. Im not sure why the pictures of the older buck slow down unless it's because there getting killed. I inky have about 20 acres but am surrounded by hundreds of acres if woods and farm fields. The biggest issue with my grandfather’s 260 acres is that it borders a South Louisiana Bayou. That’s the South border, The North Border is an insterstate, so deer are forced to pass through this property. It’s a blessing and a curse because deer have to stay within the edge of the bayou, but also the poachers come down that bayou in boats. We’ve found others’ cameras and a neighbor finds jerryrigged stands on his property every year. Not to mention South Louisianians just shoot anything that walks out, and then assume deer don’t get big out here. I have pictures to prove them wrong.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 hey man. Funny you replied. True story, I have a RUclips channel and a mainstream radio show. I’m kind of globally famous for my novels, which are being called “the next godfather.” My content is mafia related because, well, I spent 13 years in prison for being a mafia enforcer in Detroit, for my blood family (Mother was Grace Tocco). People get mad at me all the time for steering away from the mafia content. BUT, I tell them YOUR channel is the ONLY channel I ever watch on YT. True story. They don’t believe it. They think I’m all into the mafia channels and I’m not. I can care less. I’m all about deer management and trophy brook trout fishing. I’m actually heading off into the UP wilderness right now. All alone for three days. About 20 miles from Seeny. You know the river system. I’m after a 19” brookie. By the way, I’ll be having a new TV show coming out on Huge new streaming network. I can’t even say the network’s name because they haven’t had their official announcement in Hollywood. My show is called “OFF THE CUFFS,” and it chronicles me chasing my prison bucket list, which includes harvesting a mature buck. I’ve never done it. Came close when in the Ozarks for a year. Had a 190” typical 10 point come in. Close to a record buck. Perfect symmetry. A deer behind me winded me and blow it. I was at 18 yards with a bow. ON YHE GROUND! No blind!!! Up here you’ll never see a buck like that because of all the local window snipers. They rarely get past 2.5 here.
Anyway, I’d love to feature you in my show, and maybe you can get some great PR that bumps your prices? I’m sure you could evaluate my property in a couple hours. Only 20 acres but it’s setup perfect. Needs your touch though. I’m still a rookie brother. I’ve made so many mistakes, according to you. But I learn fast. I’d love to have a call. Send me an email and I’ll send you the sizzle for my TV show. Maybe we can find a way to work together. You are def my fave RUclips show. Shoot, you are MY ONLY RUclips show🤣. God bless. Below is my website and email. I’d love to talk.

I only have a 20 acer piece and only 13 of it is woods, because of the size will I ever be more than just a habitat manager or is that not possible because of property size?

You can be a herd influencer on any size parcel, it's more about creating the best daylight deer parcel that you can 😊 Good luck!

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks! Had the woods logged out, so it's much thicker, have a couple mock scrapes, and 1/2 acer corn, 1/4 brassica, and 1/4 rye. We will see how it goes, only one big buck on cam so far

Doe management of herd management is the one that confuses me. Same doe every year, 2 buck fawn. Like clockwork. Only 2 adult does and 2 yearlings every single year. Me or neighbor have decided not to shoot does over the last 3 years. Definitely not seeing growth of does. Is this old mamma doe running off all other does and small bucks in the summer? When to kill and how many does is plentiful?

If you consider 20,30,40, acre parcel's "micro parcel's", what would my 5 acre parcel be? A "atom" sized parcel? Lol

I've shot my biggest deer on a friend's 4 acre "building lot". Location is very important in this case . It borders a row crop field on one side and woods on the other and the road at the bottom so they are forced to cross his property from food to bedding

I’m not sure this gentleman understands when a deer reaches its maximum potential. I assure you that a 6/7 yr old buck is not what he was at 4/5 years old. Unless there are extenuating circumstances at hand.
