Hi Mia & Jess, cattle rancher here. We had our vet give us a tip many years ago. When one of our cows retains her placenta, we get a 1/2 gallon plastic juice jug filled 3/4 way with water and tie it to the cord. The weight of the jug will put tension on the placenta and it will not harm the cow. Gravity and time (a day or two) do the rest. And it saves you a vet bill.
“And that came with its own placenta” “no really, there’s a placenta right there” 😂 that just made my day

I grew up in the era of lots of Debbie's, named after Debbie Reynolds, who was famous in the 1950's and then Little Debbie treats were marketed in 1960 named after founders 4 yr old Granddaughter. There were lots of Debbie's in my classes growing up in the 1960's.

Omg I can’t get enough of Little Debbie! She’s so precious. I love this life you’ve created for yourself. ❤ This is what I dream of having one day, but also I don’t think right now is my time for that. As much as I want the big farm and all the animals, I am so busy with homeschooling 4 young kids and still working a full time job in addition to the homesteading journey we’ve been on. I hope to make it to “Jess” level when my youngest hits his teens, so another ten years or so? My ultimate dream is that I just want to be able to provide them all with nourishing food when they’re adults. I know how stressful it is finding healthy food and being able to afford it, so if I can feed them and their families I’ll feel so blessed. Thanks for all your inspiration as always! ❤🍅👩🏻🌾🐓
You know, I have been a little sad that I can't have the dream land right now. The dream feels so far away. I have two young kids and am feeling disappointed that I can't have it when they are young. But there is so much time left. It will be good with big kids too
@@nicolephillips9991 I feel that way at times, but I try and find ways to bring the farm to me haha. Jess always said start in your waiting room. Do you grow anything where you are now or do you have any animals?
@@BlossomBlissHomestead we have a large garden that just keeps expanding. Unfortunately my very small town in the country doesn't allow chickens. So we have no animals. That is part of my problem. I feel like I am missing out on all these animal learning. I know the next step is finding a community and maybe learning chickens from someone else a bit. But I don't know where to start. The garden is amazing though and I love every part of it.
@@nicolephillips9991 what about rabbits? We just recently got bunnies and they are great fertilizer for the garden. It seems like many areas don’t vilify them???
@@BlossomBlissHomestead that is true. I guess I am not sure what to do with them. I'm not sure I am ready for butchering. Or well, I'm not sure my husband is and I'm not sure I want to do it on my own 😅

My daughter and I busted out laughing when you noticed the plants at the market, and your son replied with "Oh no Mom, not more/the plants!!" Paige says the same thing to me when we are out! I have to be corralled away. 😝

The calf is beautiful! When you introduced her to us and said when she was born, all I could think of was please say you named her Debby, and then of course you did! 😁

We took our boys next door to my brother’s to see the new baby calf. When we got there mama cow was chowing down on her placenta and my 8-year-old instantly vomited! Ahh, there go my dreams of him growing up to become a farmer. 😂

You're looking exceptionally beautiful today, Jess. We had a doe retain her placenta for the first time this year. We've raised goats for 16 years. My goat mentor told me to feed her Tums because it's a calcium issue. She passed it later that day.

I have been to that place once, and was in awe of the size! I went for a large amount of peaches and left with a bed truck full of all kinds of stuff. 😅 Mind you I live in VA and we were down visiting family like we do every few months. Just another fun filled day in paradise! I know this is a couple days after filming so I am certain the ewe had her lambs - sure hope there was no trouble with tangled or backwards lambs - I would be tempted to check her. I am beginning to think this is the year for trouble - I have heard of a few having trouble with animals and offspring, myself included. Oh the joys!

That is one adorable calf!! I have read that animals will give birth in the storm from all the stress. A feral cat here had her babies the night of the last big storm.
In regards to making breeding (and culling) decisions, when it comes to holding back, don't look only at how many you have, and how many you produce. Do you have any problematic ewes that might need replacing sooner than later? Do you have any ewes that are a prime example of what you are looking for in your flock? You've had the group for a bit now and are going through lambing, so keep notes and think of things from multiple angles so you can make the right decisions that will help you in the near and long term futures.
As a mom who has had 4 home births, I feel I can personally relate to these animals 😂
