  • Buy now, pay later services like Afterpay, Affirm and Klarna have been around for a while, but they exploded in popularity during the pandemic. Now, consumers are shifting more of their spending to buy now, pay later lenders.
WSJ reporter Angel Au-Yeung joins host Alex Ossola to talk about how they work and why some consumer-advocacy groups say these services encourage shoppers to take on more debt than they can afford.

Ridiculous. Credit is the backbone of modern civilization. Families, small businesses, governments, the tech industry, you name it, all rely on credit to accomplish their goals. We’d quite literally be thousands of years behind in human civilization without the introduction of credit.

Affirm is awesome, no fees and the interest rate is upfront and clear. Often it’s really low or 0%. It’s like actually treating people like adults.
In the other hand, Credit cards are the worse. They charge you fees and interest forever, it’s predatory and evil.

It doesn’t affect your credit score. Which for many people is the appeal of a credit card.

Affirm is trash. Customer service is nearly 100% overseas and really horrible. Had an issue span four months without a resolution, I was calling every week just to hear the same lame excuses.
They also push their own credit card so hard that in a couple of clicks you’ve applied. These BNPLs are akin to payday loans. Just save your money people.
