Lyrics:
I set my sail
Fly the wind, it will take me
Back to my home, sweet home
Lie on my back
Clouds are making way for me
I'm coming home, sweet home
I see your star
You left it burning for me
Mother, I'm here
Eyes open wide
Feel your heart and it's glowing
I'm welcome home, sweet home
I take your hand
Now you'll never be lonely
Not when I'm home, sweet home
I see your star
You left it burning for me
Mother, I'm here

"I can see it now... The Kid in one corner, and Zulf in the other. Ain't much of a fight."
İts like the two sides of the same coin
Been what, almost 8 years since we had to carry Zulf home through a rainstorm of arrows and this still takes me back. Funny how moments can stick with you.

I'll never regret my decision of saving him.

Kid stops noticin' the pain after a while. Can't dwell on it. Not with the burden on his back. The extra burden, I guess. Been carryin' too much weight ever since this all came to pass. Gods only know just how much. All he feels with each arrow is another pound on the pile. But he doesn't drop Zulf and shoot back. Kid just keeps goin'.
When the shootin' stops, Kid thinks for a minute that he's just dropped in the middle of the road and wound up wherever we go when our luck and time runs out. So why are the Ura still there? They just stand, bows dropped. Watchin'. Not waitin', exactly. Not gettin' ready for somethin' worse. Realises he can't question good fortune for too long in this new world. Keeps goin'.
One of 'em didn't get the memo, I guess. Takes a shot, as if it'll make a difference on top of all the arrows porcupinin' him already. Gets a brief 'n' terminal reprimand from his boss for it. Kid mighta glanced up at him for a sec. Mighta nodded, or just let his head sag under the pain and sheer godawful tiredness he's been feelin' ever since he started takin' arrows for a man he's every right to leave for the anklegators.
No more thinkin', now. Plate's just up ahead. Kid shifts Zulf's weight on his back a little. Doesn't look back. Doesn't push his luck. Just takes a mercy where he finds it.
And away the two of them go. Back home. Back to the Bastion.
That woulda been some awesome commentary
I know this is three months late (or so) but man, that's so good! :D
I just replayed Bastion (Left Zulf and did Restoration first, then saved him and evacuated on NG+) and this fit just right with the moment and the type of narration the game has. Bravo!
@@ExileTwilight Thanks, man. Don't really have the attention span for anything beyond vaguely-compelling paragraphs, so it's . . . helpful, I guess . . . to know that the random stuff I fling into the gaping maw of YT rubs at least a few peeps the right way.
I heard this in His voice. Bravo.
Esto es hermoso you are a amazing writer
I love how this scene is set up. Most of the mini-maps have ended in a miniboss, which leads you to think that there has to be a BBEG fight at the end. Think the Anklegator, the attack on the Bastian, ect.
But as we head toward this encounter, we're reminded that Zulf isn't big or bad. He's not a fighter, he's a diplomat. He's not doing this because he hates the Kid, he's doing this because the City he loved betrayed him. He could never have won against the Kid--it was suicide. And worse, Caelondia put him there. He wanted to save everyone. He loved Caelondia and it's people, he thought he was making a difference. But it didn't matter. They didn't care about "mercy"--heck, "The Mercy" is an memorial you earn by killing things.
By the time I found him there, I didn't want a fight. I wanted to show him that he was right to believe in mercy. I wanted to put down that annoying battering ram. But most of all, I just wanted to save someone. I was almost crying, just praying we could both make it out of there.
Thanks, Supergiant. It was beautiful
Beautiful summary
Bruh I cried my eyes out till i reached the skybridge, such a powerful and beautiful moment
Almost? Homie don't lie. I was a waterfall.
God damnit now i'm crying AGAIN
That's such a good way of putting it
When I first played this game I seriously thought I might not be able to save Zulf. I was concerned I would need some threshold for health or some kind of resistance or something. When the first arrows came it pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Then I realized they had stopped, I had a huge sigh of relief, only for another one to start shooting. Had the game bugged out? Was I about to die? Nope, his friend clobbers him for it. It was at that point I realized just how special of a game this was.
I realized that the second build a wall came on.
I know it's suppose to be Zulf's theme, but the song always makes me picture the Kid returning from his first tour at the Wall only to find out that his mother has passed away.
Beat Bastion for the first time yesterday. Can’t even begin to describe the feelings of slowly trading back to the bastion, Zulf slung over my shoulder, and seeing those first crossbow Ura come down. At first I think I can make it if I’m quick, but two more come down, and realize I’m probably not getting out this arrow storm alive. I know my health is low because I felt the werewhiskey kick in. I see a trio of pikemen guarding the exit and I know for a fact I’m not getting out of this. But then arrows stop firing, and one of the pikemen moves to the side. As I get closer the other two move as well. What’s left of the Ura are all gathered around, watching a half dead Caelondian carry a half dead Ura to safety. And that’s all they do. One tries to finish the job, but a stab in the back from one of his country men puts that idea to rest. In a one moment everyone realized how pointless it all was. There’s nothing left to fight, kill, or die for. The violence won’t undo the Calamity, killing this one man won’t solve anything, losing more people to Kid doesn’t gain anyone anything. All that can be done now is just wait, and watch them leave.
The whole scene left me speechless.
Leaving Zulf behind is a choice you have, but... I could never bring myself to do it, just the thought breaks my heart.
The game DOES reward replaying it..
On every play through of bastion, I always spare Zulf. I never can sum up the strength to let him be
Me too, I kind of wonder what happens if you don’t save him. But I won’t try to see for myself
Same
For those wondering, I did it, on the same playthrough I also reset the world. First game I ever got all the achievements in, so that's the only reason why I did it. And... he just lies there. You don't finish him, don't do anything to him, or for him. He just lies there and bleeds out in the snow. You go on with the ram and slaughter what's likely the remainder of his tribe's warriors, same invincibility as if you save him, and move on to whichever ending you choose.
Never. Ever.
You never had the weakness to abandon him. You were strong enough to let go and save him.
I liked how the lyrics can have different context based on what happens with Zulf. Well doesn't matter because there is only one correct thing to do with poor Zulf.

Hearing this song again makes me feel so many emotions
I know this is old but I wanted to bring something up. He is not singing about his mother. He is singing about Micia the lorn mother, goddess of loss and longing. It's really good symbolism if you look deep enough.
I first time played Bastion when I was a child. It's been over a ten year since. A lot of stuff in my life have drastically changed. I have changed. Yet, I still love this game from the bottom of my heart. I still think that it is, despite being imperfect, is unbelievably good. I still think that Supergiant Games is an incredible studio full of insanely talented people. And I still break to tears each time I hear this song. It's so emotional yet so simple, so powerful yet so humble and personal - just like the Bastion itself.
It is just a little but astonishingly beautiful tale about flying fortress, broken world and a random kid who is trying to save everything
The artwork is amazing! Now my eyes get to have a feast as does my ears.
This moment was by far one of my favorite moments in any game I've played. Sticks with me still. First time a game actually got me emotional, too! Thank you supergiant for everything you make.
i cried so hard when this song came on in game. just beat bastion for the first time yesterday. thank you for the experience, supergiant
Years since I first played and this still gives me chills. Bastion was a once in a lifetime masterpiece. I just wish so much I could experience it like I did for the first time again.
I just remembered this absolute gem. 13 years later and almost started crying while listening again.
Micia, known as Mother to the Ura, is believed to bring life into the world and welcome it back on death. This is quite literally Zulf singing his own dirge. Ever the drama queen lol.
this part of the game legit made me cry, and the music was a big part of it
I didn't know the game before listening to this song, but now I feel like playing because of this song that has beautiful lyrics and this soft guitar touch, I easily become my favorite song

This is a beautiful song I never played the game but I love the music
The moment this plays in is probably the most profoundly emotional one I've seen in any game ever. The writing and gameplay and everything just all add up to it and the catharsis is surreal when it drops.
Been a long time since Kid first picked Zulf up off the ground. Not cause he forgave him, not right away. Zulf'd done gone something real bad, betrayed trust, broken promises. Not cause he wasn't mad at him. The mad? It'd stay for a while. The kinda mad that just lingers and burns in the belly and chest like a slow burnin' coal. Not cause he wanted to talk. Kid didn't want to talk, not yet. Maybe not for a while. It was cause Kid knew, deep down, that he and Zulf weren't so different. That they both blamed themselves for something gone horrible wrong. That nothin
either could do would change anything. That to hold onto that grief, that anger, that rage, all it would do was make things worse. Yeah, Zulf was a traitor. But he'd lost more in the Calamity than anyone shoulda had to lose. He'd tried his best to make peace, to avoid it. And then it went and happened anyway. Kid was a reminder of that. A reminder of the people that took everything from him. So he done the only thing he thought he could in his pain and grief. He reached out to the Ura, sought revenge. Never thought he'd find salvation.
Now, no matter how many times the Kid turns things back to how they once were, no matter how many times Zulf finds himself lying on the floor getting beat by his own kind and left for the anklegators...the Kid always picks him up. Dusts him off. Takes the pain for him. Carries him towards safety without concern for his own. And Zulf always feels guilty for it. Kid ain't got the words. Zia's still to mad. Rucks tries, but he can't quite get through.
Sometimes it ain't about forgiving others. Sometimes it's about forgiving yourself. And maybe, someday, Zulf will learn that.
I will never forget this song!
First beat this game nearly nine years ago as a young teen, and to this day I still think about this scene. Watching my partner play it for the first time and them getting to this part really opened my eyes to just how special this game was. What a beautiful game.

Após horas de busca encontrei meu destino final
I know the following can be perceived as really shitty humor but years and years ago, listening to this lovely tune, I suddenly found myself singing “Iiii shit myself - all over the new carpet; whaat will I do, poo poo.”
Waaaay back when, in a time where The Calamity was thought to have taken everyone and everything, there he was, Zulf; a boy, rescued by The Kid.
Do you want to know the difference between the two? There is a world of difference, in this case, the end of it.

_Felt like I spent three hours just carrying Zulf through that storm. Was definitely worth it, though. I wasn't planning on keeping the Battering Ram around for long, just like the Mortar and the Cannon. Only weapons I could trust in the Calamity were a pair of pistols and a good blade._
I'm Welcome home
Shit- all of your songs are so direly underrated like goddamn
I so badly want another bastion tbh, the lore clawed into my brain
Why are they on islands? Was it like that before the calamity? ? ?
H o w do they have enough resourses to stay aloft on the isles? ? ?
W h ydid the calamity even need to happen? It was something being created that went wrong, but yet its a weapon also at the s a m e time, cant be both if the initial part went wrong, then it implies they have a calmity cure and never used it or even thought that far into it to use w/e it is as a cure
Theres gotta be more, like theres no way scratching the surface puts you at the bottom of the bowl so, more lore pls pls
Think I have some answers(Of course spoilers):
(also I might misremember some details cause it's been a while since I played or read anything)
(And if you haven't finished the game yet or want to replay it I recommend doing that first because the game explains a lot of these questions at various points)
The calamity was the result of a weapon made by scientists in Caelondia during their war with the Ura. They said it was never to be used except as a last resort (but it was used and I don't know if it is ever mentioned why so that might have been a lie). Zia's father was a Ura who lived in Caelondia and was also one of the scientists who were helping build the weapon. When he discovered what the weapon was to be used for, he sabotaged it so it would blow up Caelondia instead when activated.
The world was whole before and the calamity tore the world apart into islands.
The Bastion is the mentioned "cure" because it can revert time to before the world fell apart, however it wasn't finished by the time the weapon was used which is why you need to find the cores.
One the question about resources and how the islands float, I don't know, however, the calamity happened (to my understanding) literally just before the game starts so the world has just fallen apart and the cores are what is keeping most of the areas afloat, although that part is a bit iffy because some places still stand even after the cores are removed. I guess the "thoughest" areas also stay afloat, and as the narrator explains, the kids crest has some of the bastions power which can also bring back floating bits of the earth. So I'm guessing that there are multiple factors for why they still stand(cores, how "though" the place is, how hard they were hit by the calamity, if they have similar powers to the bastion, etc...)

This song just asks for a powerful metal cover. That one wouldn't fit the scene in the game proper ofc, but it would be awesome in its own right.

this song at 2x speed is perfect
If I recall, "Mother," is what folks in the setting called the goddess of loss and death.
So it is that this song breaks my heart. It's the Kid preparing himself for his own death.
Micia the goddess of loss and longing,
all are born from the lorn mother and in the end return to her,
they say she gave away her heart, and bears the Star of Caelondia in its stead.
