My brother was in a motorcycle accident, he had to fly from Cali. to NJ. My parents had to buy 3 tickets so he could keep his leg elevated. Plus a 4th ticket because my mother was travelling with him. It was a med. emergency to try to save his leg. If a medical emergency doesn't get special accommodations, why should an overweight person get it?

This is a very interesting case. If airplanes charge, not only for the seat (space), but for weight, because fuel consumption, you should have had the respective discount relative to the weight not used.
If they can put a paying customer on standby then they can put the plus size on standby until they get an extra seat on another plane as they didn't pay for it

I agree 100%. I was very overweight at one point. I didn't fly at that time. I would have absolutely have paid for an extra seat. My weight was my issue, no one else's.
Yeah, it’s only natural. Other people can’t be punished because you’re having issues with your weight, whether it’s your fault or not. You must assume responsibility for yourself, that’s the adult thing to do.

It would be nice if Airlines design one extra extra large seat that would accommodate not only large people but also medical emergency needs . Make it so it's first come first serve one seat offered
on each plane with the exception of a true medical emergency once the seat has been reserved and booked by someone anyone after needs to choose a different option pay for extra seats or a different flight airlines should not be forced to do so however it would just be nice if they did and I am not saying this out of Need for myself I just think it would be a kind thing to offer their customers .

It's not because of someone eats too much, it's because the air lines doesn't know how to sell tickets.
The problem here is the airlines want to sell the space, when it should be by individuals.
Not having a system to where you notice the traveler you're selling the ticket to is overweight (I have an option overweight online) to Mark the ticket overweight so the system knows more than one seed will be taken therefore unavailable to sell to another.

As a disabled person (wheelchair user) I can't express how offended by this. Actual disabled people have fought for the minimal rights (ADA) and accommodations we have, only to have THIS happen! 😠

Right?!! A friend of mine has spinal muscular atrophy, and he has to be CARRIED ONTO THE PLANE and forced to sit in an extremely uncomfortable position. This is a thing, but they have “no ability” to accommodate wheelchairs???? 🤦🏼♀️

It just seems to me that if you purchase a ticket you should be guaranteed a seat. If this woman and her two teenagers bought seats they should be guaranteed those seats. If somebody else comes along and has a special situation, they should have to wait until an accommodation for their needs pops up. Is this a ridiculous point of view? I don't actually fly anywhere.
That's not a ridiculous POV at all. I'm disabled and I would never want my special needs (if I should have special needs in the future) to push somebody else out of their paid seating. My disability is my problem. Her weight is her problem.

Airlines oversell their seats all the time. It is actually very common. Usually airlines will offer people incentives to book a later flight.

I agree with you. Maybe the overweight passenger got there first so the seat was already taken . The problem is the overbooking/double selling seats.
Pre-COVID i was roughly 350lbs (25+ stone). Spent 3 weeks in the US in 2019 and took several flights. It only really dawned on me at that time how much of a massive inconvenience i was to others when flying, i felt terrible. A lifelong friend i flew with jokingly flagged to me i'd essentially spent a 12-hour flight pressed up against him. That stuck with me.
Decided to make a concerted effort to fix my weight issues, and during COVID years i lost 182lbs (13 stone). Had a huge smile on my face when flying with the same friend last summer. Until a grossly overweight passenger sat down next to me and was almost sitting on my lap. Ha.

You take up 2 seats, you pay for 2 seats. If you can't safely and comfortably fit into one seat, you have to buy two. It's not discrimination -- it's for the safety and comfort of everyone.

It is not point of the safety and comfort for everyone. It is discrimination for people who has to pay for what they get or discrimination against people who are not obese. What are they supposed to do, re-design airplanes to accommodate, this is what she (BAE JAE) is saying. Can you imagine an emergency on the airplane when the US law states the plane must be evacuated within 90 seconds and a person of size is stuck in the aisle, blocking all those people from exiting? Tragedy awaits.

Southwest broke their contract with this family. They should get refunded and given comps: hotel rooms, meals, upgrades on future flights, etc.

If I ever lose a plane ticket because someone else didn't buy one in advance. Being left in the middle of nowhere, not being refunded any of the money I would soothe their a**** off. There is a 100% no reason why people like this should be taking advantage of it. If you know you're not going to fit into seats , then you pay for 2 seats. They make parents pay for an extra seat for children that are of 2 years of age. They're not allowed to sit on their parents. Lab so this person should have to pay 42 seats too
As a fat person myself you are absolutely right. If one seat isn't enough BUY another or pay for first class to get yourself more room. Other people should not have to suffer for your poor choices.
Me too :( but I ALWAYS made sure I squished myself into my space and never affected the people next to me. I think if a 500 pound person sat next to me I'd position myself so that there would be no over spill onto me.
As a formerly-obese person, I agree. I was always VERY aware of how much space I needed, and prepared for it ahead of time.
What annoys me about this women's logic, is that as a 6' 1" person, my knees jam into the back of the seat on united, so it's discrimination against tall people to not give me more leg room, so I should sue... I know very well what airlines I can fly comfortably, and what class I need to fit my legs in. I will never fly united again because I simply my legs don't fit their economy seats, and if I want to pay for premium economy, there's better airlines to fly with. I paid 3x the economy ticket for premium economy to fly 13 hours direct from the west coast to Europe, because I knew I wouldn't have enough leg room in economy. This is just life, people need to grow up and deal with it.
@@heyaisdabomb Many years ago I purchased flights for a family vacation for 4 that required 5 seats, as 2 of our party were tall broad men. Back then flying took a much bigger bite out of our budget so it was a big deal. This was before the strict rules about ID matching the ticket so getting the extra seat was no problem... until boarding time. Then we were informed that people were on standby and our extra paid-for seat was given to someone else. I was livid. People complain about those that don't purchase adequate space but the airline punished me when I did.

Morbid obese should pay for extra seat. Its unfair to charge higher prices because less heavy people are available to fit one seat. This lady who was forced to wait 24 hrs was mistreated. And should be accommodated.

I was obese for most of my adult life. Not once did I ask for special accommodations. You know what I did? I lost weight and have kept it off. It took about two years but I did it.

I'm a flight attendant (not with Southwest), and it's actually hazardous to have too many passengers of size aboard an aircraft. Going to Nashville a few months ago, we had fifteen passengers of size (all in the same party, of course) at the middle of the plane, and the weight & balance was so off that our captain actually had us prepare for a potential aborted take off. Honestly, it was scary.

I get what you are saying. I have taken jump flights from Logan to Bangor a bunch of times and if there was a larger person on the plane they would distribute the passengers to balance the weight. Never saw a truly obese person on these flights, but some large men.

I just flew on SW Airlines, and the man behind me needed 2 seats for this exact reason. Now, let's think of the person sitting on front of him... who was me. I wear a lumbar back brace after 2 lumbar back surgeries that didn't go well and in chronic pain. Where did his knees go? Right into my back!

If airlines are going to accommodate overweight people with a free seat (which by the way, how would people get to an emergency exit quickly if behind her?) Then accommodate those with long legs and metal rods in their backs.

The air line is at fault...IMO They don't have to give someone a free seat. They could always make a plane for overweight people or making it so that the airport know's someone is overweight ahead of time so they can get enough seats for everyone they booked. Not everybody wants to be fat like this POS, lady in the video who thinks it cute. However in this case I don't think her request is unreasonable.

Former TSA officer here. They don’t pat you down because of your weight/size. That’s blatant discrimination. They pat you down if you alarm somewhere on the full body scanner.
That part triggered my BS meter.. Funny thing, I used to weigh 300 lbs and never once had to do a pat down going through security but I lost 170 lbs and now..... I get pulled for a pat down any time I fly. Every....single......time! Lol. Its wierd

I red-flagged for dangerous chemicals only to later discover that many makeup or sunscreen products with glycerine can trigger the red flag. I can easily choose non-glycerine products for travel, but they don't warn us about that!

Another reason to not fly Southwest Airlines. The plus size person should have to reserve the seat ahead of time and if they dont they should be asked to disembark the plane. Maybe Southwest should go to assigned seating.

Thanks for enduring this narcissistic nonsense for us, Xenoshot. I've flown Southwest many times because they don't charge for luggage, but no more. The lady and teenagers who got kicked off a flight without compensation, in order to give their seats to someone who didn't pay or book the seats ahead of time, is appalling, and should result in a lawsuit. I do agree with Jae Bae the Hutt about one thing: I hope the FAA gets involved and restores common sense to this situation. These entitled, narcissistic, self-absorbed cretins need to be given the back of the hand.

There's also a consideration of emergency evacuations. In a recent incident in Japan, an aircraft on fire managed to land and the crew succeeded in getting EVERYBODY off the plane within 90 seconds despite the fact that two of the exits couldn't be used. It was just in time, before the whole plane turned into a fireball. 90 seconds! I realise that this is the standard target, but to actually achieve it in a real emergency is just unbelievable.
Now imagine trying to do that with someone "of size" blocking the aisle. It would be impossible.
Or 2 or 3…
They should just turn the two back rows into plus size seats and have a policy of only two plus size people per plane. This way they don't inconvenience anyone else.

I think Southwest Airlines with that policy for “plus size “ is discriminating against those of us who are not big.
She does realize that even with 3 seats, she still has to ask for a seatbelt extender, the tray in front of her still won’t come down, the bathroom will still be the same size, the isle will still be the same size, the airport will still be as big (you know because heaven forbid they WALK the airport and get some exercise in), and the seats at the airports will still have armrests to make every other passenger comfortable!!!!

My Granddaddy who fought at Arnhem Bridge was 6'7". My father before me who fought in the Falklands and in the liberation of Kuwait, he was 6'3". I've fought from Belfast to Banja Luka to Baghdad, then back home the long way round, I'm 6'5". You know what we when we step on the plane? We get told to buy a bigger fcuking seat. Fatties disgust me.

I’m chronically ill and have a lot of medical supplies. Originally a medical bag was free but some airlines no longer allow a free medical bag and our wheelchairs are out with the cargo and are not strapped down so many people land with busted wheelchairs and they can get an extra seat for free?

Simple solution for us healthy people is to never give southwest our money again.
Let’s not forget Southwest will start losing money for essentially giving away free journeys. Soon we have planes flying with less than half of the capacity because there is one person on each row. Also, people have places to go to and pay a lot of money for a ticket, obviously. It’s basically a game of luck whether you’re actually allowed to board or whether someone has taken over your seat for free. Reliability is vital for any airline, why would anyone choose to fly Southwest Airlines anymore?
I am an overweight person, but I am working on losing weight. If I need to buy an extra seat on the plane I will. Its only fair. But this fat stuff I do not agree with. You are not disabled or have a special need. Therefore buy the extra seat. My mother is going to New Jersey in April and I told her do not book you ticket on South West. After I told her what happen, she stated she would use another airline. She almost 80 years old and last thing I want is for her to be stranded at an airport. Especially since I am not going with her due to school.
My sisters tend to fly Southwest. I heard about this and told them check in as soon as possible, board early or you might lose your seat to one of these folks. Their cattle call boarding policy is the only thing that can save them. Better yet, fly another airline. Let Southwest handle all the "persons of size".

So Southwest would rather have one severely obese happy customer that didn’t pay for one of the seats they “need”… Rather than have three happy actual paying customers? This makes no sense to me whatsoever.
I agree that this is not only insane but it is unfair as well. Why refuse a paying customer with 2 teenagers just to accommodate someone who chooses to be at an unhealthy weight? This whole situation just pissed me off because they’re all stranded at a place they don’t know and don’t even have their luggage with them because the airlines sent the luggage back home. They should get a full refund at this point.
Something like that happened to me when I was going to Mosq since I was changing my mos. Flight attendant asked if the air Marshall needs to be called. Sure call her because I already was speaking with her. She came up and said if I show my dod orders that i have to be on this flight. I had my orders on me and the overweight lady was asked to get off the flight. This was on united when she only purchased one seat year was 2010.

I’m a 6’5 300 plus pound man. I do agree that airline seats are way too small for 2023. For me personally, legroom is a far bigger problem. I always pay extra on my own dime for the extra legroom seats since I fly pretty often for work. 70% of the time I don’t need a seatbelt extender. I’ve abandoned all hope of ever getting to go number #2 in an airplane lavatory. However, I really don’t like this policy kicking off people who are ticketed passengers for persons of size who didn’t pay in advance. If the Person of size paid in advance fine, if they didn’t, kicking off three paid passengers for them is ridiculous.
I'm a big girl and 6'; my husband is 6'2. Honestly, EVERYBODY should be pissed at how small U.S. airplane seats are. I've flown foreign airlines and the amenities and space on the planes were SO MUCH BETTER. Not to mention for similar pricing.
For example: Air Canada was a DREAM! Free coffee, tea, cookies, veggie chips at the gate and on the plane, and roomy seats for butt and legs. I haven't looked at any U.S. based airline the same. We're getting ripped off!
Well, I'm not that big. I'm only 6 foot 195 pounds. And i've never been comfortable in An airplane seat.... They are hunks of metal that fly all over the world. It would cost a ton of money for them to change every single airplane to accommodate a small percentage of people. It's just not fiscally responsible... Then again, giving away free seats and driving away. Your customers is also not physically responsible.
If that is the case, then the individual needing two seats needs to call in and have the agent book the seats needed. Encroaching on seats purchased by other passengers is unacceptable.
Congratulations Southwest, you cost yourself not only the price of one seat, which we know you're just gonna pass onto the other customers. But you also could be held liable for this woman and kids accompanying her missing not just this flight but their connecting flight back home internationally. Have fun with that.

If you've grown so large you are the size of livestock, not a human being - then you rent a vehicle and travel like livestock on the roadway in whatever type of accommodation you can design to fit your livestock sized body. You designed it. You can't fly . There's a reason airline seats are tiny. It's about economics and business plans . If you can't fit you cant fly commercial

I'm not sh1tti g you. I've worked in radiology where we used to RENT an 18 wheeler that pulled up behind the hospital once every 2 weeks to ** accommodate the bariatric patients. It is a truck that serves farm animals.. the machine can fit cows 🐄 you're cow sized so you get treated in the cow truck
We just roll your azz down the ramp and into the cow truck and 6ou deal with it because you decided to try to kill yourself with food and make us push your cow carcass around roll it over and search through the piles of fat for a anatomical landmarks... 😂

I used to be ~300 lb , including during air travel. I realized that was not healthy. I had type 2 diabetes in my mid 40s, and realized that I was probably going to die young. I had gastric bypass. Now I am under 190. I wish these people would take ownership of disabilities that They have chosen and deal with it. It's not society's job to deal with your own specific choices. You made the choice, you need to decide if that's the way you want to live, and you need to minimize your impact on everybody else.
And in spite of all the flack I will get for saying that it is a choice, it is a choice! There are options for you to deal with the past choices, and go forward as somebody who is not too big to fit in one airplane seat. I've done it. You can too! Don't just say this is a disability... And disclaim any responsibility for it. You are better than that.

I know I'm going too, I don't normally participate in boycotts, but I'm totally not flying with them, because they are deciding to pander to these fat people who refuse to lose weight and exercise

I am disabled myself but I became disabled by 30 years in law enforcement and combat security contractor. I have been shot twice and stabbed multiple times and fractured multiple bones and have had 24 surgeries defending the public and not from being a Hogzilla.

I honestly feel bad for some of these women and think of how screwed they mentally could be, but robbing someone of their plane seat is just awful. I had a aisle seat on a flight, a football player sized business man had the window. He told me it was last moment for work. He looked so packed in to the seat. He did not complain. I took me a moment but I ask him if he would like switch. I'm smaller. then him. He was very happy. He did not ask the airlines to give 2 seat. He delt with it and was rewarded
A good way to push back against the person of size policy would be if EVERYONE started claiming they were oversize and required an extra seat when they book on Southwest. Then they could only sell half the seats on the plane! I'm sure that they would very quickly change the policy then.

I hate, how she mixes in disabled people, as if that is the same. I am disabled, someone did this to me. My heart is damaged, and some other problems, including PTSD. I won't go into detail, that's not for YT.
Still, I don't need assistance, I fit in 1 seat, I just should avoid stress, because it really can kill me. In some situations, the heartbeat can go up to nearly 200, the bloodpressure to 190/150, and that's very deadly, and then, I, at least, need to sit down...
Despite that, this airline would kick me off a plane, for a fat person, that never had to suffer, and did that to themselves. And they celebrate it as "inclusive" and fair, and dare to act as if they also would do it for disabled people. They would kick us off of this planes, like all other passengers! It's insane 🤦♂️

The woman’s list of things she hates about the planes when she is overweight is just absurd. She wants the airlines to have bigger isles, extra free seats, and doesn’t like the fact that the tray tables don’t come down (that’s your fault not ours), and more. So basically she wants everything redesigned for those who weigh hundreds of extra pounds for her comfort but I doubt it’s that easy. Maybe she can come up with a solution that wouldn’t cost everyone else a lot more money to buy tickets since it doesn’t happen for free🙄
If someone is needing an extra seat for comfort or fit (safety), that seat should be discounted, but free seems a bit much. That should also apply to musicians needing seats for their instruments, people needing an extra seat because of a cast or leg brace or whatever.
But the rest of the blame goes on the *airlines*. THEY are the ones who oversell flights all of the time. If someone has an extra seat for comfort, and instrument, an animal, whatever, *DON’T* sell the seat to someone else. Quit selling more seats than the aircraft has! If someone chooses to fly standby, don’t charge them for the flight until they actually get to sit down. If people get booted for whatever reason, pay for accommodations. The airline overselling a flight does not constitute a problem on the passengers. They showed up in good faith and if they’re being denied a flight, they deserve compensation. This is where and why a codified Passengers’ Rights Act needs to be enacted.
it's true, my family just flew southwest and this just happened on their flight, everyone was so upset because of the delay, they just had someone "Volunteer" to give their seats, this was in Baltimore and my dad said that one gentleman was so upset because he said he had already been bumped twice due to this issue.

Yes, each cheek can occupy an entire seat. I have seen it. It's so sad to see. This is NOT a smart and healthy way to live. I once sat on a plane where a guy's fat rolls smashed me into the window side of the plane. I politely told him that he has to move. Luckily, there was an available seat open where he could occupy two seats. It was disgusting as he was sweaty and I started sweating because he couldn't avoid smothering me.
As a fat girl, I don't know how that works either. which seat belt do you use. I fly regularly and my husband always books me an aisle and he sits next to me in the middle.
Can you imagine being seated, the plane is moments from pushing back and you have the only empty seat next you, then... Godzilla walks through the door and is looking down the aisle at you! LOL!
