Parts List for 1 candy cane below. You need at least 1 candy can feeder for every 4 birds. If a small flock you can use a 3" diameter pipe or less length of pipe to have the right amount of feeders for your number of chickens.
You can calculate the volume of a cylinder with the formula. V = πr^2h. 50lbs of feed has a volume of 35.5L or 2165inches^3. The volume of one 3ft, 4" diameter candy cane is 452in^3. 2156/452= 4.8 candy canes. So 50lbs of feed can fit exactly into 4.8 3ft tall 4" diameter candy canes. I tell you all this so that depending on how many birds you have you can determine how many candy canes you will need to make at what height. Also take in mind how high you will have to lift the feed to dump into candy canes.

Just assembled this 4 days ago and mounted it to the coup. Rain tested for 2 days straight and the feed was bone dry. Caveat, the feeding end is covered. I also tried this with 3 inch pipe. 4 inch is the way to go. The chickens ate out of it almost immediately and after 4 days there is zero wasted feed on the ground. Thanks for sharing.
I made these over a month ago and just did my first refill. I made two 4 ft ones and they fit 25 lbs of feed exactly. I sealed mine with silicone caulk, as I didn't have PVC sealant, and they've done very well - no spoilage or molding! The connector at the bottom is genius, my hens aren't able to pull their food out, which keeps the area neat (and so far, rat free).
Awesome Sara love hearing you had great success with them!
dont chickens LOVE rats ?? for food
I have made this for our chickens, thank you for the brilliant video. I am concerned about my chickens eating all their food in two days. Will they not keep on eating until the feeder is completely empty.
if you are going to make these using 4" triple wall drain pipe like done in the video please note he's using the wrong product to connect the pieces. HDPE doesn't solvent weld like pvc so you should be using drainage adhesive which takes much longer to cure. So if you want to save time or don't want to buy a special adhesive see if your store carries 4" pvc drain pipe instead which costs about the same.
Best design I've found so far. Thanks for sharing!
Came here for the chicken feeder, stayed for the eyebrows
What? I thought this was a caterpillar farm channel!
Same
😍🤣💕😘❤️
He wears his brows with style!
Exactly what I was looking for! And thank you so much for doing the calculations on amount of feed versus height, and all the links!!! You’ve made this SO easy. 🙏😊
I've used this concept for my chickens and goats but your solution for reducing the chicken's waste is ingenious! I don't think it would work for the goats though! I will be upgrading my chicken feeders now! Thanks for the tip! Your channel is awesome! Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge!
Oh ya goats would be super tricky to control how they eat. Sweet good luck on the upgrade! You're welcome :)
Do you ever experience rats and mice with this feeder?
I purchased a metal feeder several years ago that was marketed as "saving" feed....seems my chicks are smarter than the inventor. This year's new batch of hens LOVE to dump cup loads of grain on the coop floor.....not anymore thanks to your ingenious feeder.
This is great and I want to do this as well. One way you can save a lot of money is to use sewer pipe as opposed to schedule 40 PVC. Tons cheaper.
Hi Steven,
I’ve been watching your gardening and farming videos since you lived in Lemon Grove, Ca.
I was raised on a 3 acre family farm as a child in Spring Valley, not far from La Mesa where I was born. Have wanted a small farm ever since.
My husband moved us to Oregon in 2005
and I’m finally getting that farm. Starting out with chickens. I had my husband build a coop and run very much like the one you had in California. Think it’s the best design I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing all the info. I’ll continue to watch your videos.
Janet Westrup.
I love the little add-on's to keep the food from falling on the ground. will be using your design for sure. Thanks for sharing.
That 4" downspout piece is a GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!
I built these and these are PERFECT. There is no food wasted at all. 5 of these holds about 75lbs of food and feeds my 5 chickens for about 2 months. You have to make sure they are sealed though!!!
Hi I’m so happy I saw your video and upgrade my chicken feeder . I love you ... you save me a lot of money.. doves use to eat most of my chicken food.
Thanks a lot for sharing us
Love peace and gratitude
Doves make for good food.
I decided to use your idea for my chickens. They are only approaching 4 weeks old so I believe I will either sit them on the ground at first, put a block for chicks to stand on, or just use regular feeders until they are big enough. Cheap and easy to build! Only took 20 minutes or so. Thank you for the idea
Love that down spout adapter, diet clean look and more effective than just the lip
Thank you for this setup! This makes feeding a breeze.. even for our cat. 😺
Ours are going on three years now and the chickens still love them and we have had zero problems. Make sure to glue the parts together to prevent rain from seeping in and use the 4 inch downspout attachment as shown at the end of the video and never have spilled feed. Months worth of food or more depending on how many tubes you build. We have 5 that are 4 foot in length and they hold a full 50 lb bag of food.
I've been wanting to do this for months now and I finally went and bought all of the supplies to make 6 feeders. Can't wait to see how they work.
Update: built the feeders. Once they figure it out eat with no problems. I spaced mine about 1 1/2" from the ground and they access the feed easily.
Oh You Very Good skill in Gardening and Farming
I just used your perfected candy cane design to create 4 feeders and they are working perfectly, much thanks and gratitude!
Great to hear that Paul! Happy growing.
I’m so glad I found this again! I couldn’t remember your channel name. Your content is amazing, thanks for everything you share!
An excellent idea! We are DEFINITELY going to try it. As it is, we waste endless amounts of feed, not least because mice get at it easily during the night!
Glad I found this video with great practical info! Can't wait to build candycane feeders!
Awesome idea for the feeders - thanks so much 😁
That is a nice looking setup. I am looking to set up something just like that for mine. Thanks for including a round about recommendation for the number of these per bird. I am a new subscriber and new to chickens, so I have to say that you have a lot of really nice videos up. Keep up the good work.
Some amazing feeders and amazing eyebrows!
Thanks from a first-time chicken owner!
Brilliant design. Thank you!
I am totally intrigued by this! May have to build it for my chickens, because boy, do they sure waste food.
Hello there, I loved this idea so much I had my husband build me two of these for my five backyard birds. My problem is I can't get three of them to eat. Two birds will put their faces in if I tempt them with dried meal worms but I can't even get the other three to do that much. I'm afraid these three miscreants haven't eaten in two days (except for what was already on the ground that they spilled from my traditional feeder). How did you train your birds to use these?
Thanks so much for this video. It really helped
At night just put rectangle cup on it and it is Mouse and rats resistant:-) briliant super easy and cheap think 👍
What is a "rectangle cup" and where do you buy it? - Thanks in advance
Thanks for the idea! Just a heads up, 3 in diameter down spout adapters are difficult to find, so I had to build with 4 in materials even though I have a small flock.
Idea!!!! why not attach the tops of the feeders to a big rectangle plastic tub and pour the entire 40 or 50Lb bag into the tub? Good Idea?
I've been thinking about doing this with mine. Anyone have any results?
@@seanowensullivan vvvvvccvvvvvbbbbc.v v vbvcbvbv..'.
I thought about that as well!! Why refill every week versus every month.
great video and idea...they do sell the elbows that fit each other directly.
That’s awesome! I was thinking about doing this but have heard people have a problem with too much waste! I love your ideas!
Those downspouts are a game changer ;)
Nature's Always Right for real. I would have never thought of that!
Can you do an update video? How have these worked? Any more modifications or tips?
The mesmerising eyebrows !
When I first came across your videos I thought 'why is that guy wearing false eye brows?'
But I've grown to love them. 😂
haha :)
Great video, as always. It looks like you forgot to mention the cap you use for the top? Slide on or screw on?
Thanks
We just made the candy cane feeders from 3 inch wide PVC. Did you find that the 4 inch PVC worked better? Not sure if the 3 inch feeders are working right, seems like we have to scoop down the feed ourselves at times. Thanks for your help.
Love your eyebrow, has some character in it :)
Great build. Just wondering though if you have a rooster? I noticed blood on the downspout and then realized that the rooster’s comb kept rubbing against the upper inside part of the downspout.
Going to try this new system. Thank you.
How many feeding tubes do you need per number of birds? I have black Australorps, buff Orpingtons, and barred rocks. I have 10 of each. I want to make sure I have enough to allow enough birds to eat without them having to fight over the openings. I need to provide 7.5 pounds of feed each day. They will be free range. I planned to have 4 tubes. Is this enough?
Thank you very much for your videos. Can roosters with a large comb eat from this ? Or should I have to make a bigger feader for them?
Would this work in a more humid climate??
Love your feeders thanks for sharing
Mine a similar, but I’m having an issue with mold now. It was okay until it started getting pretty humid
Any suggestions?
Hello BFAM,
How are you?. This is very clever. I love it. How is your farmer's market business coming along?. I hope all is great. Cheers!
Hey man doing well. It's the down season right now in San Diego (aug-sept), still at the markets but gearing up for fall. Cheers!
My question is: Do chickens eat more than they should with this system?
Would like to know the answer to this as well. I just made one tonight, so it's a little late to be asking. Anyone can chime in.
@@billbarrett582 Hey my friend! Little update. I have 40 chickens, and with this system they do not eat any more than they shoul ! It's a great way to stockpile food and keep it safe from rats and other pests. You can get bigger pipes and install big food container upstairs if you have space. Im currently going big to 100 chicks so I hope that it will help me menage.
You can also put automatic water system, it's beautiful. Come pick up eggs, once in a week or two clean, and you can afford time to market the eggs and live like a king!
Austin Powers couldn't resist himself when the Moley Mole guy had a big Moleeeeeeee on his head.
Nice modification. Thanks
So at the end of the pipe is it a 45 then another 45 then the downspout?
You’re a badass dude, love the knowledge and nice to know theres likeminds out here. I don’t care what they say about those eyebrows🤙❤️
Ha ha .. ok mate I’ve watched a few of your videos now and I think
the jokes over now… you can remove the Groucho marks eyebrows I get it… ha ha ! Well done very funny ha ha 😊
Hi, thank you so much for sharing such wonderful information. What do you use for a lid? Do they have caps?
I didn't use caps but if you had a bad rat problem they sell matching sized caps.
great idea just a quick question the downspout does yours turn easily in the pipe? or does it fit snug mine fits very loose in the 90 or not at all if i put another piece of pipe in it. used 4" pvc for everything and obviously i dont wanna glue the downspout in. any suggestions?
Simplely genius 🤩
Great feeding system ! Thanks for sharing!!!
This is awesome! Thank you!
Asking here did you have any issues with rain while filling the feeder or rodents eating your feed?
Had a chicken get stuck in one of these today and suffocate. I think the feed got stuck and it had to go too far in. Water tight and the end is under the coop of the weather. Not sure what to do
Loved this idea! I showed my dad and he’s gonna go get the materials to make it for me :) thank you!
Ay at least u got a dad
How big would you say you need a chicken coop for 15 chickens?
Going to make these today. Thanks!
Just curious did it work for you?
@@ordnajelaaadartse3917 It was kind of mixed. They did eat out of it, but never seemed to take to it. But to be fair, my wife almost hand fed them daily, so they never really had to get used to it. :)
Can you list every pvc part for the feeding system and the angles ? Thanks
Wow yu are very creative ❤
What do you use as a cap for the top? Thank you for the info, I'm going to try this!
There is a cap in the hardware store for whichever diameter size pipe you buy. Sometimes they aren't right next to the pipes in the store.
Awesome setup! Just to let you know you can buy and inside the pipe glue cap for cheaper and drill a hole in the cap with a 2 1/2 wood bit much cheaper than the down spout same result if your on an extreme budget like me. But nonetheless Great job I can tell you really love those babies how many do you currently have?
Already tried doing that exact thing cuz I wanted cheap too, but these work better, no spillage is possible at all. 20 chooks :)
thx a lot great video
Good idea 💡 thank u
Is there a way to tell when the feed is running low? By the time the chickens start to get skinny it seems a bit to late!
Thank you you've solved my issue
Great job! Thanks for sharing.
What type of feed do you use in your feeders? Crumble or pellets? And do you have any recommendations for the brand of feed?
Crumble, pellets are fine too. My birds liked the crumble better. Whatever is the cheapest non-gmo or organic option is the best.
I have a 4"downspout but still having issues with pigeons. Any suggestions?
Good Idea my Friend, I'm From Cambodia
Good idea, but how would you keep out the rats
First! Great stuff as always.
Sweet tips, thank you! New subscriber here. Can you tell me if the downspout adapters had the desired effect of preserving feed? Thanks in advance! Keep the good info coming!!!
They 100% do and others have said the same
Silly question is the 4in PVC fitting sold separately? Did you cut it off from the drainage pipe? I brought all of the items listed. I'm having trouble putting it together. I rewatced the video and that it needs a 4in PVC fitting.
Are you talking about the couple inches of pipe necessary to connect the 45* angle to the 90* angle? It’s a short piece he cut off from the main piece of tubing.
It is not really automatic. Innovative. RD. Keep going ! Keep farming
It feels like there's a lot of play in between my tubing in my angle fittings. I'm worried that the cement is not going to fill the Gap and it will leak.
Its crazy how expensive this is now... I'm going to try a similar concept out of wood.
Did the revision solve the water problem that caused mold?
Yes the pipes need to be sealed
i built these and love them - but sometimes it seems like the feed doesn't feed down enough to have a bunch waiting for them to eat? I think it's fine because as they eat, more comes down....just wondering? any feedback?
I'm having the same problem that the feed isn't coming down...
Try adjusting the angle of the feeder
@@jcanales520 might try adjusting the angle - it might be that they are getting plenty of food - I just want it to come down more. BUT I do love this feeder, it saves so much time with putting their food in and out so we don't have rodents, and no space taken up on the ground where they can have more space to move around.
@@NaturesAlwaysRight thank you so much. I do love your videos, excited to see how the new Homestead develops. I'm actually in Santee area of San Diego and wish you so much luck. It's impossible to live a great life in San Diego / CA - so expensive. Also, are you able to be totally off grid in Tennesee? That would be amazing!
Did anyone fix this issue? It’s a problem for my girls and I’m wondering if there isn’t a fix. Adjusting the feeder forward so it tips more toward the open end, I’m not even sure how I can do this easily to keep in place.
so basically you feed rats and mice as well or what stops them from eating the grains?
You have rodents? That's a problem.
@@jharding32 So we await a video on how to deal with rodents.
@@jipfoley5 ratproofchickenfeeder.net
Fantastic idea, any problem with sparrows or smaller birds taking the food?
I never do but these feeders are located inside their inner run. There is only one door entrance to it so they would have to fly in there to gain access. I would think because of the downspout it would be hard for them to eat it without putting their whole body inside.
Awesome!
great idear .
Do you use brewer's grains for chickens? and if so, can you use an automatic feeder if it's wet? thanks!
I have fed them it in the past and it is a great free food source. I need to connect with a brewery to get grains going for my chicks. I would worry about mold being created and it getting all nasty in the feeder. I always just dumped the grain on the ground and they ate it without any issue.
Gratitude great idea
Are those barred rocks or Dominique's chickens? Also thank you very much for the info I just bought all the parts to make the chicken feeder💃🙋
Nah bruh those are his eyebrows.
@@IckyGuy LOL!!!!😂😂😂
What size pipe did you cut for the pieces in between each part?
Just enough to have a flush fit when joining
Nice. Now I can go otr.
Wonderful automatic rat and wild bird feeder.
Tim Snow : chickens usually take care of the rodent and snake problem .Wild birds will not fly in a INSIDE RUN and will not put there full body in the Down Spout . Geesh
Are they still able to peck at it and get it out i mean i see them but im just unsure??
I tried I build it and it does not work have to shake it every day its supposed to be automatic**
Didn't work for me food just dosen't drop I have to shake it every day 🤷🏽♂️
Try different angles for the tubes. Make sure you are using a 45 and a 90 to get the right angle for the front of the feeder. Mix and match one of the configurations will work in whatever set up you have.
Did you figure out a fix that worked?
Rats..answered as I was asking..lol..ty
