Mark, I just want you to know this video and your version of this song has saved my life at least a couple times and gotten me through some tough tough times. I just want to thank you, so thank you.
I am a direct descendant of William Clayton, he is my great-great-great grandfather. He was a good violin player and I love reading his journal that he left us, not to mention being able to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing a song so close to my heart, every time I hear the song sung I get goose bumps, I can feel my ancestors. Thank you for posting this wonderful clip.
even if you don't get it.... the spirit, strength and most importantly Faith in this song is enough to celebrate. What Mark did with it is amazing. Powerful. True. Pure.
At high noon tomorrow the funeral services will be held for one of the pioneers of the LDS Church in my little South Carolina town. This was his favorite song, and we will sing it to close the funeral services. Your version is awesome.
This rendition really hit me in the feelz. One of my favorite hymns. This song has been an anchor when I feel like my own struggles are bogging my down. Your music provides perspective and clarity.
Mark, I still love your version of this song as much as the the first time i heard it. I learned it as soon as I heard it and sing it at the top of my lungs every couple of weeks. Thanks for sharing this with us.
A few years ago when I first began listening to Mormon Stories, I often looked forward to the comfort I felt when listening to the Sabre Rattlers' Come, come ye Saints afterwards. (The studio version of this song) I was often times filled with so much angst and sorrow and confusion as my reality crumbled finding out the truth behind my correlated version of my faith, and this song helped me step back and breathe a bit...helped me process things. I wish I could find that version :(
I have heard all of your music, and this one by far remains my personal lifeboat. Being gone in military service all of last year, I would keep the tune in my mind that soon I'd have this story to tell. You are a gem Mark, looking forward to the new album. -d
thank you for taking my otherwise dark and dreary day and sharing your talent with me - putting a smile on my face and helping me find a little more hope.
I heard Glenn Beck mention this as one of his favorite hymns. Since I had never heard it, I came to RUclips to find it. Yours was the first version to show. Excellent.
@jbharuch many thanks! i guess it's about august now. my wife and i had a baby girl three months ago and i'm just now catching up. thanks for the note!
Thank you! This is so beautiful aranged this way. I know the saints sang this a lot on that long journey and you play it as I think they might have. Who knew you could serve a mission on youtube with your music!
I had to come back and listen to this. But by looking at the number of views. I am NOT the only one! If he can make an album with all the LDS ballads sung like this I will gladly pay top dollar!!
hey flemmen, essentially (key of Bb, as the capo is third fret) I'm just playing in the key of G. G, Am, A7, C, D, Emin--in no particular order. i recorded a couple of studio versions. both can be found at sabre-rattlers dot bandcamp dot com. the acoustic one is free at the moment.
i was in tai bei w you bro, many years ago. i saw you on tv a little while back and i said, i know that dude! I love your version and how you changed up the melody. ingenious! ting chi lai hen bang. i remember you knew a lot of card tricks, and played the guitar like a madman. do you only cover hymns or do you rock out as well? me, i left the whole religious thing behind a long time ago, but damm thats a good song. i've showed a lot of my friends and family. peace to you, brother
@ericdxx ...hi eric, there is an 'original' melody (which i've rearranged) and the chords aren't direct from the hymnal. but the hymnal arrangement is also only an interpretation of the melody.
I love your style. Are you the same one who performed Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy? Sound s very different, but I loved both. Thank you for sharing.
@gumpandjennay hey gumpandjennay: i hadn't thought of pipes on this one but hey maybe! i know some here in NYC. maybe for the next record. thanks for the suggestion!
I just watched you and your family on the Food Nanny show and loved your singing. thank you so much for being so "unconventional". Do you have a CD out?
Mark, I am wondering how I can listen to your version of “Poor wayfaring man of grief”. You used to have a video up for many years and I always found my way back to it. I actually emailed you back in 2012 and we discussed the impact it had on me. Your version is extremely powerful and touched my soul deeply. Crossing my fingers that you still have it❤️ Thank you so much
I would really like to download this version but was unable to find it on itunes just not the acoustic version.. if you can direct me to where i can find this version id really appreciate it .. thanks for your help
THE ALTARPIECE I would never have thought To have rewrit the rewrite - And if not for that lacrimae rerum Note left, would never have known What roars like an underground river At night, driven a bit like proverbial spike Connecting two railroads - a continent adrift? Or more Mormon gold? You get my gift Who so inspired me, ha ha ha, of Auld, And yes, O yeah, yes yeah! of ALL the old, To top things off, true story, to be told.
