    Excellent video! I really appreciate that you started with the digital vs analog loop since that essentially answers the question.

    how do you configure the EVO 8 soundcard with smaart? i get a reaaly hot signal into the EVO panel when I use digital loopback.

    could you do a comparison with a loop back from a line out from a console (matrix feed) to a line input on the interface?

    When I was a kid, I could hear the horizontal oscillator in the TV (15.75 KHz) and it drove me nuts. I was therefore not much of a TV watcher, but even today with the digital television there's no horizontal oscillator , but I still don't watch much broadcast TV.

    I have the evo 8. I'm using only one mic. How do you hook up the loop back to keep her analog?

    Ive been wondering if the Open Sound Meter loop reference would make the use of a usb condenser mic like a UMIK-1 possible for tranfer function measurments. That would make it possible for those that dont have a usb interface and xlr mics. Do you see thay as a possibility?

    • @MichaelCurtisAudio
      @MichaelCurtisAudio  Год назад +1

      It's certainly possible, but in practice there's been some bugs that have made the internal loopback and mixing of audio interfaces within OSM unreliable.

    hmmm, I have a permanent problem with the delay and the coherence in OSM. Reason might be my setup with a USB measurement microphone (minidsp) and the sound that is sent out with a focusrite.
    But my delay estimation changes from +100ms to -300ms (what is impossible). I will purchase a beyerdynamic mic and check it out again

      For the reference channel are you using the built in loop for the reference channel? It has a really high latency.
      And yes, it could be having trouble with using signals from separate audio devices.

    • @thomas_ger4098
      @thomas_ger4098 Год назад

      @@MichaelCurtisAudio Yes the reference is the internal loop. Think I will receive my new measurement mic thursday and then we will see. I assume it is definitely a problem with the different sources. The interface for the output, the usb plug for the measurement microphone.

    I don't have an Evo 8. Yet! I do have an X-32 Rack. I'm wondering if I can create a digital loop-back in the X-32 routing by just picking one of the Card Inputs as the Output? Hmm.... X32 routing makes my head hurt sometimes :) Nice video. For us Smaart Newbies, would you consider telling us what keyboard shortcuts you are using as you navigate around in the interface? You are way faster at it than I am. Thanks.

      Thanks, John! And yes, I'll make sure and "narrate" a bit more when I'm driving Smaart. I'm only recently this fast at it because I took the Smaart Operator Fundamentals Online course. I highly recommend it!

    • @johnschalk1271
      @johnschalk1271 Год назад

      I duplicated your examples today using my X32 Rack and the thing that I really had trouble wrapping my head around is the fact that the Digital Loop Input vs Mic Input needs more delay because it has LESS latency. Ugh. Good practice for me though so thumbs up on these little Smaart experiments.

      @@johnschalk1271 Those little experiments are exactly how these concepts solidify and you get faster with your tools! Way to put it to work.

      EVO 16. Newer product, has gain tracking integration with Smaart, digitally controllable preamps.

      @Michael Curtis hey Michael thanks a million for being here for us. I ordered a used Evo 8 to save the bucks for now to try to get a grip learning open sound meter for now. I just want to be able to learn to read it, align subs to mains, fills, drivers and to get a great target trace tuning. I did donate to open sound meter.

    The impulse response of a digital loopback is a single sample pulse. The impulse response of an analog loopback is mostly the halfband filter used in the codec to prevent aliasing. You can subtract impulse responses from one another. (deconvolution or complex division in the frequency domain). So taking a measurement of an analog loopback and an analog loopback through a speaker/mic, it is possible to remove that codec's impulse response from the speaker/mic. Not sure if this software does this. In practice since the speaker and the mic are both lowpass filters, they will filter out most of the codec's impulse.
    BTW
    I thought smaart used an MLS signal rather than noise.
