But let's draw a picture of *how 'Smile' should be:* As you witnessed, good *artwork* exists now as demo. 'Smile' should have a *new 'remix'.* And I don't mean something as we have seen in the 1990's, on Bad 25 or for Xscape etc. I mean 'remixes' like they worked for artists and bands like the Beatles, the Carpenters (their early 90's 'remixes') or even Paul McCartney's re-issues (including 'Say Say Say') and many other. This means _only changes in the mixing_ of the song and only _minor re-production._ - some would call it 'Alternate Version'. However, there could be added a few significant _alternative vocals,_ as you hear in this video. I like to alter the 90's Foster pop beat slightly to make it _more classic._
'Smile' should be released *in digital form* and together with a few other tracks on a *CD and Vinyl.* Those tracks could be the original *'Album Version',* an *'Instrumental'* and/or an 'Orchestra Version'. To round it up, there should be the final song *'Childhood',* which fits perfectly here. Of course there could be different pressings with different tracklists. The audio you hear in this video is only for promotion and not as an example of how the 'remix' or anything else on 'Smile' or _HIStory 25_ should be.

In March 1995, Michael Jackson recorded _‘Smile’_ for his album _‘HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I’._ Despite the fact that the song wasn’t new, Michael wished to create his own version and did so with a live studio orchestra. According to Bruce Swedien, *Michael sang a perfect first take.*
_“After laying six takes with the orchestra resulting in a standing ovation, once they realized Jackson was singing along with them live. He would record a further fourteen takes in the studio. Each as perfect as the last.”_ - John Cameron
_“During the recording, the entire orchestra had been listening to Michael sing through their individual headphones. When Michael walked out into the studio to meet the orchestra, _*_they gave him a standing ovation!_*_ Every member of the 50-piece orchestra stood up.”_ - Bruce Swedien
Michael Jackson’s original idea was to have the song accompanied by a short film featuring himself as _the Little Tramp_ in recreated scenes from *_‘The Kid’._* Michael’s tribute to his longtime hero, however, was not to become reality. In 1998 _Sony Music_ was reluctant to invest the required 2 million dollars in Michael’s short film. With the HIStory album being well over two years old at the time, _Sony Music_ argued that any profits were unlikely to cover the expenses - _of course this is a poor argumentation and wasn’t the first time they both locked horns._ The song would only be released as a single if the video was a low-cost live registration of a Jackson performance or concert - Michael never sang the song live. *Stubbornly, Michael ignored the directive* - _fortunately I’d say._ *Instead, he asked photographer Steve Whitsitt to help him shoot the material needed.*
_“After a few minutes of chatting, Michael got down to business: ‘Steve do you know the song Smile?’ he said. ‘I think so Michael, but I’m not sure…’, ‘Here, I’ll just sing it for you.’ It wasn’t just the fact he was singing for me, _*_it was the absolute stunning clarity of his acapella voice, the hair on my arms stood up, I was moved almost to tears._*_ The whole lasted only a couple of minutes.”_ - Steve Whitsitt
Although Jackson insisted on proceeding with the visual material needed for _‘Smile’,_ the project eventually fell through. *_The Chaplin Estate_* did not favor a new interpretation of _‘The Kid’_ and did not grant permission to use the film materials. Lacking an alternative video to accompany the commercial release of the song, _Sony_ pulled the plug on _‘Smile’._ In January 1998 the single release was cancelled at last minute. As the distribution had already started, a few copies, mostly promos, went into circulation in the UK, South Africa and the Netherlands, making it the rarest and most collectible and valuable collector item

I remember we were in the studio, and I came up with the idea at the end of the song to have the piano sound like in an old movie theater, with the sound slowly disappearing. _*_Michael told me it would work magically with the short film he had planned for the song._*_ He loved Chaplin, said he saw a lot of himself in him. *Meeting the Chaplin family* - _Unforgettable memories of Michael Jackson_
Michael Jackson’s detailed knowledge of Chaplin’s work became evident when he first visited Chaplin's family in _Corsier-sur-Vevey._ Yet drawing _the Little Tramp_ and dressing up like Chaplin was still a long way from visiting the screen legend’s home. Jackson, however, found a way. In May 1988, when Jackson performed his Bad World Tour in Rome, Italy, legendary actress Sophia Loren was in the audience. Knowing that Loren was a friend of Chaplin’s widow Oona, Jackson asked her if she could arrange a meeting. He went to the manor and was given a tour of the estate by Oona. At one point she told him that he and Charlie _‘had a lot in common: you were born poor and had to strive to achieve all that you have.’_
*The impression Michael left was favorable to all present during his visits.* Michael Jackson’s friendship with the family lasted many years.

*Chaplin was a pioneer* for establishing movies as a valid art form as much as the others lively arts. Chaplin’s films elevated cinema into the culturally and intellectually prestigious art form of today. In order to study Chaplin’s creative process, Michael read books, watched films and documentaries about his idol. His admiration for Chaplin also became evident in the numerous drawings he made of _the Little Tramp,_ from on the early 1970's as a youngster. He would not only do drawings that include Chaplin’s film character, but he also *portrayed himself as a young entertainer crouched helplessly in a street corner* like _the Little Tramp_ did in _‘Modern Times’._ The drawing was included in the 1995 album’s booklet and also in the _Scream/Childhood_ single. Another way in which Michael expressed his appreciation of Chaplin was by *dressing up like **_the Little Tramp._* Carefully he experimented with style and movement, that in 1978, while recording his ‘Off The Wall’ album, Michael walked into the studio dressed up as Chaplin.

One year later, Michael visited the United Kingdom. After an interview at _Capital Radio,_ He invited photographer Tony Prime to join him on a London mini-tour. MJ and Prime first went to a shop of theatrical outfitters to buy a Chaplin outfit. Michael then dressed up and posed in Freemantle Street, where Chaplin grew up. Following the photoshoot, MJ and Prime went to _Madame Tussaud’s,_ where Michael had his picture taken beside Chaplin’s wax statue. You can see the sparkles in his eyes.
In 1983, Jackson again donned a Chaplin outfit. In honor of Chaplin’s birthday, Jackson had invited artist and Chaplin impersonator Samir Kamoun to his Encino home. Both dressed up as _the Little Tramp,_ the two had their pictures taken.

This version is incredible. Michael's voice is so clear, so pure, so perfect. I truly wish for HIStory 25 and the Smile short clip to happen ! This album is still so accurate and Michael's voice and wisdom need to be heard more than ever !

Michael's version is probably the greatest to exist. Michael Jackson often cited _‘Smile’_ as his favourite song. It was scheduled to be released as the seventh and final single from the album in 1998. *_‘Smile’_** was originally intended to be the album's seventh and final single,* and was to be released in CD and 12" format on January 20, 1998. I seriously hope the estate will go forward with a HIStory 25 project but i hold my heart. They completely skipped the possibilty for Dangerous 25. We got nothing which is unforgivable. I don't hope they will do the same for HIStory because it's a great album.

I do feel a studio and in the making video of this song with all the orchestra and Michael in to studio would still be a great video I should have been done in that way
I simply love this version of the song, and I would like to ask if you could release this version on iTunes or Apple Music, I would buy this track in an instant, but 1 thing I would like to say is that, if you were to go on iTunes, and type in Michael Jackson smile you would find a few versions, 1 being the original, and another being the short version. And finally you would find the live version of the song sung by Jermaine jackson at Michael’s funeral. All I ask is if there is a way for you to add this to iTunes i and I’m many others as well would be extremely happy to have this in there collections, and the reason I stress that you add it, is because as much as all fans want new material and anniversary editions of albums, we have to realize that, that is not going to happen at all, we can send all the emails we want but it still won’t happen, the estate has no interest or desire to release anything new, so I pray and hope that you can find a way to add this song and any others that you feel fans should have, be added to iTunes or Apple Music but start with smile first if you can. Also just want to say that if it sounded like i was being negative about new material or anniversary albums it was not my intention, I am a fan as well, I want them to release new material and anniversary albums, but I was only speaking realistically. With rumors of the estate working on a documentary to counter LN, it is possible that they may hold off on releasing new music until they are sure mj's image is again positive. It's all about marketing. Personally I feel that they should go ahead and release his music more particularly soulful music like this since music truly is a window to a person's soul and music like this really shows the kind of person mj was. As they say..hate can be conquered with love.
Estate has the full control over Michaels music, they sold most/all of his ATV publishing company, but they deffinetlly jept his masters

Nobody but him can remaster or alter released or unreleased recordings of him, using his name, image with same or changed or untitled singles or albums? Is this correct?
