Escaping to KOSOVO in a Broken Taxi - Skopje to Pristina

- Hello everyone! This is the seventh video in my Balkans series. In this video, I travel from Skopje in North Macedonia to Pristina in Kosovo.
The people you meet on your travels are, ultimately, the lasting memories.
I originally planned to travel from Skopje in North Macedonia to Pristina in Kosovo via bus. However, this plan had to change, as it was a public holiday and there were no buses in operation from Skopje bus station. My only transport option to escape the holidays in Skopje was to take a taxi.
Luckily for me, Bokkie and his brother Kosta were in town - after some negotiation, the former arranged for the latter to drive me to Pristina. It is fair to say Kosta was not happy with the cut Bokkie seemed to arrange for himself!
The taxi itself might have had a few mechanical issues, but the company could not be beaten. Kosta kept me entertained with his interesting stories, rants about the road quality in his country and his "welcome to Pristina" song. It is fair to say that he is one of my all-time favourite characters I've met on my travels!

This is an absolute masterpiece. The great thing of this video is how two complete strangers arrange an economic transaction, get in a taxi and a few hours later they are friends sharing a coffee. Just wonderful.

This was simply a taxi ride but it was an absolute joy to watch, Willie👏. Kosta, such a nice, proud, humble man. I bet he very rarely gets someone like you who is willing to engage so well with him and listen to his stories. Hilarious when the microphone came out 😂. Seemed expensive but an experience like that is priceless, I think. A coffee with him at the end too. Had to laugh at Hulk Hogan - he was the double of him😂.
Glad you enjoyed this taxi ride Sheila! What a wonderful adventure this was for me. Waking up that morning, I had no idea how I was going to get to Pristina as all the buses were not operating due to holidays. And this was arguably the highlight of my entire Balkans trip. The taxi was (is always) expensive compared to the bus, but if I now had the choice of a cheap bus versus a Kosta taxi I would pick the latter everytime. He was such a wonderful character and person to meet. I bet he could enter for Eurovision if he tried!

Next time that you are in Macedonia go to Berovo it’s small city close to the border with bulgaria. The mountains there are mindblowing. And there is the cleanest air in the whole Macedonia.

Travelling the world solo has its risks, of course, but it also allows you a lot more freedom than travelling in a group. I like to do both though.

I got caught with a bank holiday/Sunday Times in Pristina to Kuke's in Albania. No buses were running for the full day. And had my flight at night in Tirana to Barcelona. Very stressful. So I just hitchhiked. Great fun. But very confusing as old guys nod up and down for NO and shake head left to right for YES 😅. I eventually made it from Prizren to Tirana by paying some guy. He picked up more people along the way, and we passed the border without even stopping at customs. Fluid border for locals. He farted all the way to the Airport and drove around 120km in the dark. Very scary and difficult roadtrip. 😅

What do you think is fair price, and where do I get a good bargain?
My hotel manager offered me 3 hours in Pristina for 115 euros, driving me back and forth

I had to take a taxi as the buses weren't running on the day I travelled. If you travel by bus instead, it will be significantly cheaper - around 320 Macedonian Denar or €5.20 for a single ticket I believe.
Unfortunately I don't have any WhatsApp and / or Viber numbers on me. However, it should be easy to negotiate a price with any of the taxi drivers at Skopje bus station. I would say €50 (which I paid) is very reasonable. Have a great time!

We went from Skopje to Prizren for 100 euros, which is even a 2h 15m ride, and he waited for us in 3 hours.

I paid 120€ from Skopje to Peja. 50€ is really cheap.

It reminds me a lot of mainland Greece... the buildings have different colours though (slightly darker and brown-ish shades there) whereas in greece all appartment buildings have balkonies...

the last time that I attempted to cross that border was back in summer 1996; - I was trying to hitch from Skopje to Italy! ...a big squaddie with a 9mm pistol said 'NIET! ...and stamped ANNULED on my passport....
...ended up going back via ATHENS to PATRAS

I am very happy, because your eyes see what I may never want, because your feet walk on the Holy Serbian land, you even came from Africa, and I was denied that pleasure and I live maybe 100 km from Kosovo. I hope you have visited the Orthodox monasteries, of which there are many in Kosovo, and I hope you have seen how the army guards them. And I also hope you saw the destroyed churches and monasteries that serve as toilets for Albanians.

Shkupi (Skopje) used to be Kosovo's old Capital for hundreds of years but when Yugoslavia was created and the borders were redrawn & changed Prishtina was chosen to be the new capital of the Albanian Republic of Kosovo.

Yes it was capital of kosovo vilayet.not shkupi but Üsküp.Also that period not much albanian lived in Üsküp (Skopje)

Kosta seems like a nice guy, but I would've been a little scared driving with him, considering his, aswell as his cars, age. :D ....
I was a bit worried when he took off the "Taxi" sign at the start of the video and when he started having issues with the gearbox, but a normal bus journey would not have been as adventurous and exciting!

@@willieexplore haha i knew it ,and i wanted to ask you if you were worried when he took off the taxi sign. but you have already answered. If you wonder why he took it off, it's because they are illegal taxis. so it's not necessary to keep taxi sign, when they have client inside.

The deal between driver and agent seemed dodgy that got you little nervous.
Haha the "deal" was fine - it was the removal of the taxi sign that got me a little rattled and the "deal" that annoyed Kosta!
The reason I'm watching this because I have planned holidays in Skopje, Pristina and possibly Thessaloniki as well at the end of Oct.

I did purchase Kosta some Schweppes at the petrol stop and coffees (two) in Pristina, and of course gave him a tip on top of the 30 too. So hopefully all parties were happy :)

Then from there you should have walked further and then after 5 minutes you should have looked to your right. Then you will see holy mother Teresa

Yes, me and Kosta struggled to find our way before we parked - we were a bit lost! As Bokkie explained, they take the sign off if they drive to another country. I'm sure the border officials on the other side would have taken notice of the sign if it wasn't removed.

Compared to the bus it is very expensive, but for a taxi it was actually a reasonable price. Hotels and their partners will offer much more expensive packages.
