Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Based on the cartoon strip Les Tuniques Bleu, North & South is game which straddles the world's if computer strategy and traditional boardgames. Set during the American Civil War, players assume the command of Northern or Confederate factions, fighting for territory and attempting to defeat armies of the opposition to claim total victory.
Having chosen various options from the menu, players are greeted by the campaign map, representing various American states. The starting year chosen dictates how many military units each side starts the game with, as well as where they're located. Players take turns to move troops into adjacent territories, capturing it for their side in the process.
Each game turn ends once both sides have moved all their units. Players will then watch the railroad network come into play, as locomotives navigate the tracks running across state lines. Each territory held by an army through which the train travels contributes to the amount of bullion awarded to the player, which allows for the purchase of reinforcements. Capturing and holding key territories to increase bullion supply is vital to success, either increasing your own military powers, or cutting off the enemy's gold supply.
Pitched battles can be initiated by moving opposing armies into the same territory. The game switches to a view of the battle, with players taking direct control of their units in a fight to the death. Cannons can be used to fire at units over long range, while cavalry and riflemen can be used to advance on enemy positions. Victory in battle is often down to luck as much as strategy, and each battle can be quite frenetic as you attempt to switch between units on the fly.
The game also features random events and mini-games, such as hijacking a speeding locomotive to capture it's gold. These events have consequences, either robbing it rewarding a player with additional troops or resources.
Even today, North & South remains an incredibly accessible and polished title. The presentation, artwork and audio effects are superb, and most importantly, the gameplay is excellent. Fast pacing and lack of complicated rules mean games take 15 - 30 minutes to complete, and the events and mini-games provide a additional depth and strategy, with becoming overbearing. If you're a fan of strategy-lite titles, definitely give North & South a try.

Looks and sounds much nicer than the NES version I'm used to. Thanks for uploading!
Hah hah hah 😹!!!
Me and my friends played this game all the time on my Amiga 500 and also my friend's Amiga 1200 😸😺👍!!
This is a timeless classic.
Thank you, AL82! 😺👍🕹️
Loved this Game back in the days.
I believe, i still have this game on my Amiga 500.
A freakin' timeless classic 😺👍!
One of the most intertaining game in history...North & South it's wonderful!!
The art style always made me wonder if this was a comic strip beforehand.
It is yeah. It is a Belgian comic strip and called Les Tuniques Bleues.
I hope this will get a second revival sometime in the future, this time on all consoles and mobile platforms, since the first revival is on PC and iOS.
Unlike the PC and iOS version, the new revival will use 2D sprites from the Amiga version, but it will be more updated for recent platforms.
It should be available also available on Steam, XBox Game Pass, and Android.
I've been afraid to play this game since I played it in '92 due to the ditty music being stuck in my head for 30 DARN YEARS and was worried it would renew it with vigour.
Thankfully this video, with all the gameplay and sound effects combined seem to have dispelled that and I may well have been cured. Thankyou for that alone!
I seem to remember the fort/train sequences were not quite that fast but I suppose reflexes were much faster at a young age.
I forgot all about this gem. I used to love playing this
1:27 They got the music mixed up. It played Dixie when you clicked on the Union side and Yankee Doodle when you clicked on the Confederate side.
6:45 It played Dixie while the Union flag was being raised heh.
The yellow filter on the Southern general’s cigarette is also anachronistic.
These runs make it look so easy 😅
I have a question for american friends: do the bunch of generals you can choose at the beginning are actually historic characters or they are just random faces?
As far as I know, they are not based on actual historic characters. I do like their faces, though!
Game that convinced me that the time for the Commodore 64 and 8-bit gaming is up. I got to have an Amiga 500 😎
God I envied my AMIGA owning friend 😄
i really like the minimalistic menu
Im no expert in American history, but havent the developers switched the themes of the two sides?? It sounds like "I wish I was in dixieland" when you choose the north (01:26). Dixie is the "naional anthem" of the south. And it sounds like "Yankee doodle" for the music on the south (01:42). The south wasnt yankees. But then again: I am not an expert 🙂
You are correct. It is mixed up.
Very cool game 👍🏻
The best Version
Realy funny watch these animated attacks:D
1:54 I wonder what the chessboard instead of arcade machine option does. I guess it makes the battles turn-based?
It gets rid of the arcade battle sequences - the game decides the outcome for you based on things like number of units remaining.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Oh ok. It's good to have an option. Turn based battle would have been cool though.
you kill an entire army with just one guy! 12:21
That’s Chuck Norris’ father.
Did get some help from the Confederate artillery.
My favorite Amiga game..... Anyone knows where to find it and play on pc ?
Ahh.. beating a double army with a single soldier. Side shift, shoot 😂
Two union soldiers in all situations to defeat the confederation
There was a remake of this on PC, but it was crap.
