Instead of having many entrances, all you need is something like a Kewl floor, also known as an underfloor entrance, it protects againt rodents entering and robbing, wasps are vulnerable when trying to enter. Here in Europe, we have done what you are doing for decades. Downside to the sliding board being kept in for a fair bit of the time, is the build up of detritus and a breeding ground for wax moth and sometimes many of us have found the sliding board hard to remove due to the detritus.
Oh wow…I can’t say that opossums or armadillos have ever been an issue for me. If they were, I would improvise a hive stand that keeps them away from accessing the bottom boards from underneath 🤔
We have been using rear feeders on our NUK boxes no front entrance and drilled holes in the box they have a screened bottom with a bottom board all we are missing is the little hole that we have no need for. I appreciate your video but I would recommend you save your money as your not going to be able to patent what already exists.
I appreciate your input 😉. Part of the patenting process was patent research, finding if there’s anything already on the market that resembles this bottom board.
When a hive requeens itself lake in the year during a dearth when the populations are receding anyways. There will be robbing. Thus destroying a viable hive.
Good luck with the product but it has one serious flaw, which I came across making similar boards for my hives over 30 years ago. Problem is that below the mesh is a perfect breeding ground for wax moth. Unless bees have access to all parts of the hive, wax moths(and other pests) cannot be eliminated or controlled by the colony.
Hey Mark, thanks for watching! Please recall that I talked about covering the already-familiar parts before covering the changes I made. I realize screened bottom board isn’t a new thing. Thanks again for your support 🐝🐝
@thehivedoctor13 Yes. This will be the 3rd one I've attended. My beekeeper friend and I look forward to it each year. I only have a few hives, but I'm always needing to gain more information. It is probably one of the most impressive experiences due to the number of beekeepers in one place, beekeeping knowledge, and beekeeping vendors.
Oh that’s an awesome idea! And I love the plastic feed caps. I am converting everything over to them. They’re heavy duty and don’t rust which is so nice!
Surely Technosetbee triple gate system (fully open, gated and vented closed) that also converts to 3 separate nuc style in one box is the most versatile currently on the market. The triple gate means that you can quickly push down to lock shut to vented entrances in case there's an Asian hornet attack or stop robbing frenzies. They simply can't get in yet the entrance is still vented. There's also a closable upper entrance. Feeding is just a case of lifting the lid without opening the hive itself so you aren't disturbing the bees and you can feed both syrup and fondant at the same time. It doesn't matter which side of the hive you are putting the feed in from, just a no nonsense approach. Then there's also the underfloor entrance style hives which achieves more in a simple design. You don't need to deface the boxes reducing the R-Value and you don't want to encourage robbing behaviour. I'd save your money rather than reinventing the wheel, it just seems to be making life more difficult.
Is VarroxSan safe to use in my hive? I see you use drilled holes in your hive instead of the the large opening across the bottom of the hive. Why do you use drilled holes in your hive?
Having gone through the process of getting 2 patents on bee stuff, it is not easy and very expensive. It also requires a certain kind of writing which is probably best done by a patent attorney unless you have some prior experience in writing patent applications. I do agree that the standard bottom board entrance is way too big even during the peak nectar flow. I do like the ledge that the Boardman feeder sits on. I do wonder if the height of a Boardman feeder is standard? If not, you are going to run into difficulties with it fitting into a standard size entrance or the entrance being too tall and result in robbing. I do think there is a ton of innovation opportunities in the beekeeping space and just need to take the feedback and just keep innovating.
He did say that he is working with a patent company, one would assume the sed company is experienced in writing patent applications. It was complicated but I managed to get my own patent granted.
the plastic insert has no R value to help keep the hive warm in the winter. the 3/4 in hole is large enough for mice to get into the hive. I leave my mouse guards on all year long. I have problems with skunks and raccoons knocking the boardman feeders off of the hives and trying to get into the hives. I am thinking about putting up motion sensor camerasup but a couple of my apiarys have no cell service. I haven't bit the bullet to put up an electric fence. I am a hobbyists, retired so my funds are limited. I am learning how to raise my own local queens.
Hey I have been considering your question and appreciate your patience in my response. I was unsure how to respond at first because I didn’t know the intention behind you asking since I didn’t mention a beekeeping certification in my video. I'm for innovation and all, but you have to remember that beekeepers by their very nature are an innovative bunch and exist in their thousands outside of youtube, just because you haven't seen something on youtube it's does not mean that it doesn't exist. I've designed many things over the years, some I've kept and some I've scrapped. I don't not see anything in your design that I haven't seen a thousand times before over the years in a thousand different variations. I hate to discourage or be negative but I feel you have been poorly advised on the parameters of your patent. You've just made some minor adjustments to a pre-existing piece of equipment, all of which have been done before in one form or another,, there is absolutely nothing new about it.. Sorry to leave a slightly negative comment and I wish you all the best..
I applaud your spirit of innovation but what you have designed here does not qualify for a patent. You’ve taken a bottom board and put it on backwards. There is nothing to patent there. Please do not spend money on a patent attorney for this. The patent process takes years. Most applications are denied or rejected for a lack of specificity. At which point you reapply and the cycle continues till you prove originality or give up. The attorney fees add up and it takes thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars to get a patent. Please do not waste your time and money.
You can use the back feeder in the summer as a water supply as I use mine to water them in the front. I also am working on a item to make things easier for beekeepers and have a search being done for a pending patent also. How do you get financial support especially in the manufacturing phase/ marketing.

Good luck. I also want to patent scissors and a comb. And when I earn a lot of money, I will patent the wheel.
