I visited the dam while stationed at RAF Gutersloh in 1980. It felt very strange to be there considering RAF Scampton was my first operational station in 1975. There was a elderly German we spoke to who was in tears. When he knew we were British, he kept asking “why did you bomb it?”
During the very hot summer of 1980, the answer to your question is you can see the scare of the new build. Thanks for the Video, none of what you saw was there when we went.

I was stationed in the Soest area with the Canadian Army 1956 to 1958. I visited this dam many times and the Eider dam which was also bombed. The damage to the Mohne dam was clearly visible when I was there. I recall a site nearby where one of the Lancasters crashed.
    These were extra ordinary airmen.

I can remember driving over the Dam in 1973. There was two halves of a bouncing bomb on far side. We had a picnic in the snow that day; sitting beside it. Strange site and feeling to the place and the scar on dam was very evident.

Nice to see footage...I was there on the exact day and time of the raid in 2017....although one small point, the Lancs came directly over the spit of land right out in front of the dam and not round the corner as author suggests....other than that a nice video!!

I went there in 84/85 on a school water sports trip, I got a photo and can remember the bomb part that was rebuilt and the newer brickwork showed by being a lighter colour.

I Was soldier in 1945 and drove over the dam to a camp for soldiers on short leave .
The dam was rebuilt before the end of the war. I am no 97 and still remember my time
    from May 1945 in Germany.

War is war, its dirty....and during WWII, not all Germans were bad.
    All sides suffered....
I visited the Mohne dam in 1979 as a kid, I knew of it....but what it meant.

Sobering to think that some of the men flying the Lancasters were in their early twenties.....we wonder if todays Britain could provide men of such calibre, if called upon again ?

only the true Brits would stand up to the challenge, the rest would fuck off back "home".

Thanks, most interesting. Is there anything at the dam informing visitors of the raid by 617?

I'm 'replying' to myself in regard to my initial question. I see at the end of your film the civilian memorial etc and the information board about the breaching, but is the RAF mentioned?

Thanks Pete for the reply. I wonder how are the (617) dams faring with their integrity with the appalling floods in recent days!?

When I was there some years ago,our guide (German), suggested that the amount of water spilt “was like spilling a cup of coffee “ !

You are mistaken. I have been to the Mohne dam several times and that is definitely the Mohne.

@@paddycable1723 No thts the Eder Dam. 1 the towers of the Möhne dam are much heavier and larger. 2. At the foot of the towers at the Möhne there were two small houses that are still there today. Here, however, you can see much larger houses and only one per tower. 3. The Möhnetalsperre only has these arches below the roadway. In the picture there are also arches below these arches. There is no such thing on the Möhne 4. The Möhne was hit relatively in the middle between the towers, but in this picture it is much further to the left tower. That is more in line with the Eder Damm.
You can also see the relief on the tower, an eagle that Möhne does not have, but Eder upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-C0212-0043-012%2C_Edertalsperre%2C_Zerstörung.jpg upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Bundesarchiv_Bild_101I-637-4192-20%2C_Zerstörte_Möhnetalsperre.jpg

If you look at the face of the dam, there are missing indentations where the breach was. These were not repaired. Good tour though. My mother's cousin, F/Lt Jack Leggo was there in AJ P ED909.

Clare Ravenwood. You have your dams mixed up. The dam in this movie is the Mohne Dam. The dam you are referring to is the Eder Dam, which has sluice gates missing after the repair.
