  • A quick introduction to a car that I've had countless requests to do some material on, my 1995 Renault Twingo. Is it just a quirky French classic, or is it actually any good?
This is my first video, well, ever - so I'd appreciate any feedback and such! Feel free to subscribe for more low quality ranting and even lower quality cars.

I got my twingo from my mom when I turned 18. It had 3 female owners prior so it is in perfect condition (apart from hella scratches on every possible place but oh well). Its so fucking perfect I swear. City servo, electric windows, very precise shifter, abnormal 58 hp and a clutch that's so stiff it launches your leg in the air for some reason. It handles very good in corners as well as city ride. Its pretty fast for a 58 hp it does 0-100kmh in 12sec. Also my version is a convertible and if you pretend hard enough its pretty much a cabriolet. Only think I suggest changing if you end up getting one is honestly the speakers they succ ass. Also not suggesting drifting in rain due to me spinning out on a public road (got outta there real fast with twingo power).

My mum bought one around 8 or 9 years back. And it is still running like a dream. Never needed any work done apart from a few bumps and bruises considering it was her first car after she got her license, and the usual oil changes and tire wear she is still basically stock. Amazing car and definitely reliable
Edit: have to mention my mum bought a Renault Twingo 2

I had a 1998 MKII 1.2, with the D7F engine and full canvas roof. Well over 200k but absolutely no problems. Although it was rather cheap because of years of neglect and lack of maintenance. All easily and cheaply corrected! When naysayers say French can't make reliable cars. Well, it's pretty obvious they never had decent French cars, like the cheap Twingo. It was also my daughters first ride. In all honesty I bought it because at the time I wanted an "umbrella with wheels" to overcome some rainy days usually faced with my motorbikes! It wasn't for any noble cause. ;-)
My other cars being mostly for the rest of the family. But I literally fell in love with the quirky, reliable, incredibly practical, very economic and surprise, surprise comfortable Twingo! Which became my go to vehicle for pretty much everything. That didn't involve my motorbikes.
That car drove quite long stretches without an hint of trouble. I'm Portuguese, but I live on the other side of Europe, in Norway! With this said the Twingo made Portugal-Norway and back a few times, no worries, hi-cups or troubles of any sort. Absolutely regular maintenance and that's it.
The seats arrangement can only be described as superlative! Need to take a nap while on the road. Or wait 15h for a ferry! No problem, lay the seats flat and there you have an ad-hoc bed. Arrange as you please to carry more stuff than most can imagine.
I recall once me & my wife waiting for a ferry, during an awful cold, windy and rainy day. Well, we were laying very comfy with a blanket and having a nice chat... Almost teenage dating! 😂 Upmarket Mercedes, Audi's, BMW's and the likes, looked in a mix of envy and disbelieve! Curiously they were never sold in the rather "nouveau rich" Norwegian market! So the sight of one is a bit like seeing an unicorn! LOL 😂
Listen to the poor thing screaming on a German Autobahn marking little more than 160km/h, on the digital display! At minimum it's fun! LOL 😂
I really miss that car. Changing license plates would have costed a small fortune. So ended up almost abandoned in Portugal!

I also have the same car 1999, solid roof. I got it from my mom when I was 18, it was her first car. I still drive it, literally costs me nothing, and I often times feel the exact same way on rainy days (last time was last week), "umbrella with wheels" - I have said the same thing before. I've come to appreciate it's simplicity, after working for an automotive supplier for new cars.
I can also recall, me and my first girlfriend, having an awful lot of "fun" in it. As you may know, it is incredibly roomy, once the headrests are removed and seats placed horizontally.
Never have I heard of anyone having a bad experience with a Twingo, it's seems as if it is a rare product, that only added good memories to people's lifes.

Great video, fun little car (full disclosure: I drive on myself so I'm biased ;)
Two bits of information to add:
    - My '03 Twingo is the last update of the mark 1 before it got a major restyle, so it looks the same as yours. In mine, the rear seats can also be tilted backwards in several steps. You will need to either move the bench forward or remove the parcel shelf for this to work, but it's a nice extra. Not sure if that was already present on your model, but I would honestly expect it to be. But it gets better: you can also tilt the rear seats backwards until they are almost flat. Then do the same with the front seats, removing their headrest. Now the front and rear seats form a continuous surface, allowing 2 adults to quite comfortably sleep in the Twingo! This is an honest feature listed in the manual too, not some weird stuff I made up ;) Of course this trick is all the more fun if you have a roof that opens or if you have the panoramic sunroof, great for watching the clouds or stars go by.
    - Regarding the speedometer, it's very easy to get to (you can take out the top part of the dash where the speedometer lives with only 3 screws) and you can get very cheap modules that you splice into the speed sensor wire running to the speedometer display. This allows you to have the speed displayed in miles per hour, assuming you don't mind the fact that this will obviously throw off the odometer reading.

Pronunciation of Cléon Fonte. Certified French giving you a grade : ok on Cléo and the English accent puts a tonic on the nasal on Fonte, 8/10. Bravo.
It's frighteningly common over here. It sold like crazy to older people looking for a cheap second car. It was made super cheaply, hence the Cléon Fonte from the 60's on a 90's car that marketers at the time wanted young people to buy. Turns out now, on the second hand market, it is NOW a first car for the youth because : it's virtually unkillable. Even big mileage models will keep driving for miles and miles, if a bit chaotically, guzzling all kinds of liquids right up to the glass cleaning fluid. It promotes safe driving from the horrible noise it makes if you try to drive it at the max speed on French autoroutes (130kmph, 110 when it's rainy or if you're a "young driver" with an "A" at the back which I assume when I saw it first is somewhat similar to the "L" in the UK)
It's also crazy easy to drive, it's called a good learner's/good starter. I'm actually acquiring from a neighbour an old white one with very little mileage. It's a "phase 2" from 2000 and because I was too chicken shit on the high road, I had my father in law drive it as he's much more experienced and also tested the good shit like emergency braking which is pretty scary, I'm probably never putting my baby in this car until they're at least a few years old, or I'll keep them back to the road for a loooong time, no matter that the legs always grow first in girls, lmao.
My brother in law, who had video called in the first test had approved of the engine as well and he's working with cars, as in he's a professional at car shit, which, as you can guess, I'm not, especially not in English, aka my second language.
My favourite part of it is still that the Cléo Fonte engine is as old in its conception as my mother and the Twingo itself is as old in its conception as myself, her child. And the new Twingo III with the new electric engine is also only a year older than my own baby

That intro is so on point! If you're going to embarrass yourself with a classic car, you can do so much worse than a Twingo. I visited a friend of mine today, and their family had one, and after joking about it I got what I really wanted: a drive :D Theirs is knackered - all my senses (but taste, which we've already established I clearly lack) got to experience it: smelled of oil and exhaust, vibrated like crazy, made various howling noises, and had an assortment of concerning warning lights to look at ! Yet I'm pleased. I don't know that these are classic cars in the eyes of normal people, especially here in mainland Europe (they're also still very much poor people cars), but heck they're classics to me.

I've got a very early one, a mid-1993 model, almost completely original, even the radio. I've removed the rear seats and it's now a mini station wagon! It's the most fun car to drive I've had so far and I love it. It clings to the road like glue and has impressive acceleration for such a small, cheap car, often surprising owners of larger cars. Mileage isn't bad at all, at roughly 18km/l. I call mine "Le crapaud", or "the toad".

This car was mocked back when it was released in France, but ultimately, everybody loved and bought it here.
It was everywhere during the 90s and 2000s.
Amazing interior space for its tiny size, and extremely reliable.
My grandma had one new for more than 17 years, and it remained within the family years after she passed away...
All those memories went back as I recently moved a 110 cm massive wooden desk... the buyer came with a Twingo, and we succeeded in cramming it inside, thanks to the fully foldable and rail-mounted backseats!
I'm not even sure it'd have fitted in my own Peugeot 306!
And the Cléon-Fonte engine from the antic Renault 4 was quite fun to run, although it had no rev limiter (!).
55 bhp, quite enough to move less than 800 kg...
Although the TU engines in Peugeot (106, 205) or Citroën cars (AX) performed better due to even lower weight.
Thanks for this review with this nicely preserved, colorful model!
    Moreover in your LHD country.
Your voice is truly amazing, BTW.

A rare concept these days, but all you really need in a car - I'm not convinced by the SUV obsession. Small and simple. I work in a warehouse in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium and I have 4 French colleagues who live in Duinkerke just over the border. Every once in a blue moon the four of them drive in this little car to work and it's a 2 hour round commute haha. They say it's quite spacious because of the ability to slide the rear seats back. I think it's pretty cool! Also the guy next door used to own one but it broke down at some point...

This car has many cool and creative features, which I really love, but the one feature that would make this car perfect is if the rear window opened independently from the door, like on the 90s Honda civic. that is such a useful feature that I really miss in modern cars

Im hoping to get my hands on a early one.
I’m noticing the early versions like yours, doesn’t have an electric key fob, but a normal key. This is brilliant.
In newer /higher spec Renault models, the immobilizer is in the key fob, which dealers can’t replace.. so as much as I like Renaults do not recommend one that has an electronic key fob (the ones with infrared tech). You can’t start the car with the ignition key unless the key fob is working!

Twingos tick all the boxes for me. Colorful, small, sorta cutesy, and most importantly of all it's an odd duck. Sadly getting cars that fullfill all that require importing, and is risky besides in the land of $100,000 pickups. That Twingo plush is quite entertaining to see as well.

Oh boy :D One day, I tell you, one day :D

I’ve been browsing ‘TheParking’ sooo much over the last few days and I’ve seen plenty of them on sale mainly in France (obviously) and Germany.
£250 - £800 can get you a ‘93 (many of that year have still survived) - 99/00 in a Knackered but ready to drive state. 01-07s command a bit more because of the update/refresh, but nothing to break your pockets. (All sub 4.5K)
I’m just anxious about the whole import headache because I would take a day trip to France/Germany, but one from a dealer and drive back, but then the car would be gridlocked in Dover until I send off 500 documents to the DVLA/HMRC.
People take the piss with selling English registered cars. I saw a ‘96 with a 6K asking price yesterday. That’s Mk5/6 GTi money right there 😂

I tell ya people, listen to him and buy a classic Twingo before it's too late and prices skyrocket. cause these little guys have all the makings of a new Mini - cheap, HUGELY practical, and simply CUTE. So dont miss out and go save as much of them as you can!
Btw we had a Twingo for 7 years and i shiver at the amount of stuff i transported in that thing! think two full sized bicycles (one of them a beach cruiser) just shoved in, no taking wheels of and rubbish, and all that with BOOT CLOSED!
then there was a time we moved house. Then i hauled sacks on sacks of basically old firewood in the thing. And the fuel consumption was RIDICULOUSLY LOW. for like 3€ i could fill it and it's run me a day.
Oh, and it WAS reliable. never once let us down. And it could go up to 162km/h.
My only complaint it was too generic to drive - neither sluggish nor spirited, neither comfortable or not comfortable, neither interesting nor boring. just... yea.

There are many classic cars that aren't too expensive or soon to be classic.
    I have several of them.
Six of them are older than 1995 and I not even paid more than 4000€ for all of them together.
    Go for the unappriciated cars.
Mitsubishi build some wicked cars in the 80s and 90s which are very reliable (my 1988 model still has it's original belts on) a lot of fun to drive, light, repairable and a very exclusive classic car and still not expensive.
    Also very cheap insurance.
If you want luxury, go for a W210 Mercedes.
Look out for rust but other than that mechanically very reliable if you avoid the 102 and 125hp first generation CDi engines.
115 and 143hp are already second generation CDi.
    The list goes on.
