The .22LR rifle was initially a .303(British) chambered rifle , it was modified so that soldiers could do target practise with a much smaller bullet which was easy to produce and was much more affordable to obtain . This rifle in particular is the SMLE no.2 rifle (no.2 signifies that it is not chambered in .303 and has been modified to chamber .22LR) the original rifle from which it takes inspiration is the SMLE no.1 mark.3 star ( Short Magazine Lee Enfield ) . This rifle was general issue for the British army and its commonwealth forces which included India as well and this rifle saw action in both world wars .
