ABOUT KIM'S CONVENIENCE:
"Kim's Convenience" depicts a Korean Canadian Kim family that runs a convenience store in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto: parents "Appa" (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and "Umma" (Jean Yoon) - Korean for dad and mom, respectively - along with their daughter Janet (Andrea Bang) and estranged son Jung (Simu Liu). Other characters include Jung's friend and coworker Kimchee (Andrew Phung) and his manager Shannon (Nicole Power). The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name. Mr. and Mrs. Kim have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal 'Mom and Pop' shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own.

As a Korean, I find this really funny hahaha "half price, I rip off Japan!" Japan does make really good cameras.
And cars. And printers. And TVs. And... pretty much everything.
They should’ve had an old Japanese man walk into the store at some point
Which makes it funnier 😂
Where am I then
JAPAN ATTACK KOREA
Ironically the actor that plays the pastor is Japanese
“But it’s Hyundai, no problem!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
He's not racist against people, just their cars LMAO
It's not racism in anyway. They are one race. Koreans and Japanese. It's same story as Germans vs Jews. Japan did atrocious things to Koreans so koreans don't like japanese. Nothing about race

@@a-zh6lkracism isn’t necessarily the word, because that’s a pretty western concept imo. But it’s definitely reminiscent of racism, especially considering they’re homogenous countries and their people don’t look or act the same, or even speak the same language. I think it’s fair to dislike japan, since it has done nothing to reconcile with korea and consistently acts like korea was the country in the wrong, but to hate japanese people is quite bigoted.
Like if jewish people hated germans. Though i don’t know many jewish people who hate germans, considering how much germany has done to reconcile and educate their people on their awful history. Maybe it’s different in other parts of the world though. But that would be bigoted too, if they did hate germans.
“Half price! I rip off Japan!”
as a Mexican American who grew up with parents who owned a local carneceria, its crazy how much this show resonates with me sometimes. Even the blind hatred! My parents would talk so much smack about Salvadorans.

As a korean this part is so hilarious! But I love Toyota cars tho
Better start getting Toyotas at discount so you can rip off Japan just like Mr. Kim.
I'm Korean and one of my best friends is Japanese and we give each other hell all the time, it's great. Most conversations are punctuated with "Remember Pearl Harbor!"

I didn’t really appreciate how this scene was originally in the play this was based on… It’s always nice seeing the source material in the show.

Kim’s convenience. If you look at season one and you look at clips of the original play you can see how they used a lot of the original script.

How have I never seen this show🤣
It’s on Netflix I definitely recommend it. It started out as a Canadian play also called Kim’s convenience!

In ways Appa is like the new Archie Bunker.
I think they'd get along until Archie found out he was from Canada.
"1812 Edith! Canada attack America."
So we have car racism now?
Have you seen American Auto? All new vectors in vehicular racism
Remember that throughout the later half of the 20th century america was terrified of japanese automakers getting market share in the u.s to the point where they banned certain japanese vehicles from being imported so people would be forced to buy their gas guzzling land boats.
Interesting thing: Appa and Amma are also tamil:south indian words for dad and mom respectively
that's true, and in English, mama means mum, whereas for South Indians it would mean "uncle"
That's because of the influence of Indian culture from ancient times.
More than six million present day Koreans, especially from Gimhae Kim, Gimhae Heo and Incheon Yi clans, trace their lineage to the legendary queen as the direct descendants of her 12 children with King Suro. Her native kingdom is believed to be located in India.
janet is gorgeous.
1592, Japan attack Korea!
Oh no I am Japanese
as a Chinese, I agree lmao
If we stopped giving money to companies that F!@#$ us over. They would have to change their ways. Many of us still bank with companies that made the 2008 market crash. Buy gasoline from BP gas stations that destroyed the Gulf Coast ecosystem. Invest in mutual funds ran by the same hedge funds that buy out new houses and rent to you 160% of what a mortgage would cost you.
Calamities and Lessons happen in cycles because we constantly forget pain.

lol Koreans love Toyota it's a cheap super reliable car
Well Koreans seem to buy only Korean cars so...
As an American that worked in Korea and Japan. Would tell the Japanese I loved Korea for the time I worked there. Japanese younger and older do regret what happened. All they ask is to respect their ancestors. They honor their war veterans not because of the evil but because they are their ancestors. This is the way the Japanese describe it to me. Koreans honor ancestors as well! Hope peace between the two peoples!

Koreans were forced to join and prepare the boats by Kubilai Kahn after they were conquered. There were korean contingents too.
The old guy, I am guessing, is supposed to be Korean who hates Japan....but his accent is Japanese.
The actor is Korean-canadian though, his name is Paul sun hyung lee. His parents moved to Canada from korea and he was born in Canada. Don't know how you think his accent is Japanese since accents vary wildly in Asia, even in the same country
@@aldrichjosiah6495 Korean and Japanese DO sound alike as they have similar pronunciations of sounds.
I'm Greek and I experience this with Spanish. If I hear Spanish from a distance and can't make out the words, I very often confuse it with Greek until I get closer and actually hear what's being said.
Also, I sometimes have difficulty telling the difference between a Greek and Spanish accent in English if I only hear a few words rather than full sentences or a lengthy conversation.
Same thing, but to a lesser degree with Swahili. I went to school with a lad who's from Tanzania and he was able to pronounce Greek words effortlessly with almost no discernible accent.
Just because two languages aren't mutually intelligible or even related, doesn't mean they can't sound similar. Sometimes, languages can naturally evolve to use/make similar sounds.
@@TheAmateurEditor Yeah, no. Japanese and Korean are waaaay different in their pronunciation although they do share the same Subject-Object-Verb sentence structure and the use of particles. I've lived in Japan for over 20 years and recently took up Korean. It's a challenge simply due to the phoneme differences.
His Accent is similar with Old Korean guys, Japanese accents might be way different with this
Korean still salty about ww2 Philippines was attacked too and everyone knows the history but Pinoy already forgive and can even make jokes about it
That's like saying "America is still salty about 9/11, other countries got attacked by terrorism too". Different people have different emotions about their history. Also korea was invaded by japan before ww2.
@@Trignial I mean they still have a hatred on their hearts it sad to see that, japan of the past is different to japan now and the people who did that are already old or dead why can't we forgive but not forget
@@navi251 That’s a lot different... their history goes further back, than you think. That’s like saying “Why do you hate him? I got bullied too” when you were only bullied for a few months, when that person has dealt with them for years.
@@navi251 and they do make jokes lol... let’s not forget that this is a clip from a T.V show.
@@ghost-whitesand9447 You could say the same thing with Taiwan since they got invaded in the 1800s, yet the Taiwanese aren't hostile to the Japanese compared to the koreans.
Mr. Kim said that Japan attacked Korea in 1910, but Japan never attacked Korea (Joseon). When the world started industrial revolution, Korea locked the country up and fell behind the times and lost the ability to run the country anymore.
So the king (Emperor) handed over the country to Japan on the condition of becoming a Japanese aristocrat. After that, Korea, which was like a medieval era, emerged as a modern society at once, and until the end of World War II, all Koreans were Japanese and were collaborators of Japan.
Koreans always want to change this history. It's a relatively recent event, but it's not even explained in school textbooks because they lost the war in Japan and didn't want to pay war reparations to the defeated country.
Let me guess. You're one of the Abe Shinzo supporters.
@@haemaincinema6331 I'm not a supporter of Shinzo Abe lol
I want to ask you one question Did the United States and Japan help South Korea develop? Or was there help from China and North Korea?
The development of Korea did not develop into socialism and Communist Party of China and North Korea It has developed into democracy and capitalism in the United States and Japan
It's very interesting to see many Koreans denying it recently
Well, that is the objective history however to those which opposed the annexation and further occupation, it was very much an attack. Millions of people disliked Japanese occupation, a Provisional Government was created in China, there was an official Korean Independence Movement. Not all Koreans were Japanese collaborators and to them the Japanese occupation of their country could be seen as an attack, especially with how brutal the Japanese were to ethnic Koreans.
@@taiwandxt6493 No country likes to have its country colonized by another country.
The reason why Joseon became a colony is simple.
In an era when empires and colonies overflowed the world, Joseon was powerless.
The only record of Joseon's large-scale fight against Japan was the rebellion of peasants to protect vested interests of the aristocrats.
However, the results were disastrous as modern armies dealt with peasants carrying agricultural implements.
Nevertheless, the majority of Koreans did not have much interest in Joseon's independence.
They were busy living under the new ideas of Japan with jobs to make a living or to take care of their families.
History should not be viewed in black and white. It can be seen that Japan's colonization of Joseon was wrong, but it is clear that Japan's help was great when laying the foundation for an independent Korea in the future.
And the Japanese Empire has already been ruined and disappeared by the United States. I hope you still don't think they follow imperialism. Such thoughts are not good for each other.
@@Susboi06 Let me answer your convenient question by asking you a simple question as well: Did the Korean people want Japan to colonize their country and brutally abuse its people, land, and resources? Because at the end of the day, that's what matters the most, despite the Japanese far right's desire to deny such reality.
