    Chamois cream is just a standard emulsion of water with oils and waxes. A bit of zinc oxide suppresses bacteria along with the usual biocides you'll find in any emulsion. And yes, udder cream is the same stuff without the perfume and a fancy label. Sudocrem is probably the best cream for sore skin.

    I have used store-brand diaper rash cream for years after discovering that cyclist-specific chamois cream uses the same ingredients. Probably not as inexpensive as this udder cream but works well. I think American friends are using Bag Balm, which is also an udder cream. Probably the biggest rip-off in cycling is $350 jerseys!

      I think the primary way business people make money is ripping others off.
      And two main reasons why they get away with it are ( generally speaking)
      1. People are socially conditioned to believe this is how much products cost to manufacture and shelve for public consumption.
      2. People don't take the small amount of time and effort to research and test to realise they're being grossly ripped off.
      The same scam is happening with wax chain lubes.
      I make my own hot and cold wax lubes - common parrafin wax with 1.6 micron PTE powder.
      Costs a fraction compared to any manufacturer's offerings.
      $350 for a jersey...not surprised. How about $120AU for a pair of full rubber thongs\flip-flops from a surf shop.
      I prefer winter riding. Current route is 42km XC on an old 26" Avanti HT.
      Instead of blowing hundreds on "specialised" winter wear, I spent $60 on Bonds thermal underwear, a pair of longjohns + long sleeved pullover.
      If it's "specialised" it'll most likely be grossly marked up.

    Oh this is funny. I used Google translate to translate "udder cream" to the Dutch "uier crème", and to my surprise this stuff is sold everywhere here for people. They literally use the name "udder cream" for a consumer product! I guess there are a lot of farmers here, and they discovered this trick a long time ago.

    Been cycling 56 years raced pro in ultra-marathon, my longest race a 5150 kilometer non-stop time trial. But training at 2500K a month I had to have a perfect answer for all contact points on the bike. Chamois cream was then just something for those who used a leather (natural) chamois in their shorts. I used a synthetic and so never used a cream in my life. So shorts back then were something we didn't think about much, they functioned perfectly with a very thin layer of anti-friction material and the lycra fabric. Interfacing the shorts with a Brooks leather saddle completed a contact point that served me well even in a 10 day non stop time trial. Today all we get from EVERY manufacturer is THICK padded shorts like wearing a diaper, not supposed to have padding, the thick padding have thick seams at the edge even when taperd. So, today I have all kinds of problems, and I can't buy the simple shorts I used 40 years ago so effectively. After trying 30 different brands and shapes of shorts over the last 10 years of this "padding" fiasco, I am buyinig a sewing machine next year and will be making all my own cycling clothes. WTF happened to this market where every cycling business makes all the same junk?
    The shorts need to be thin and air circulating so you are dry all the time, being wet is where the problems begin, the skin wet combined with friction will create soars very quickly. So my old Canondale shorts with a millimeter of anti-friction layer and just good fitting lycra is what I am returning to. Padding? Where did that come from? Padded saddles and padded shorts are a massive problem for cyclists. A thin breathable short and a saddle that perfectly matches your sit bones solves this problem.

      @atmywitsend1984 5 дней назад +1

      Great advice. I am the most sweaty cyclist I know,and have been cycling for close to 50 years and I too prefer the less padded shorts. I haven't done the distances you have,but I have many days in the saddle over 10 hours,and thankfully I have never had saddle sore. Maybe it is pot luck. I totally agree with the excessive padding on modern shorts.

    • @batmonkey
      @batmonkey 5 дней назад +2

      Agree, used to ride a lot in such shorts, never had saddle sores, and never understood why people would want to add creams down there. A thin padding layer that conforms to - and is pulled close around - your body just obviously seems superior to thicker layers that will crease, displace, and hold moisture.

    The danger of buying those large tubs is bacteria growing in the cream. I think you need to be very careful about scooping the cream out of the big tub. Use a clean, dry spoon, move a required blob size to a bowl and then use fingers from bowl to your bits. If you keep sticking your fingers into the big tub you may cause bacteria to flourish and thus find yourself with a different kind of painful skin problem.

    • @richardjones2006

      Literally, udder cream from an agricultural merchants is the same stuff give ot take and a fraction of the price.

    • @ysarn
      @ysarn 3 дня назад

      Emollient creams are not thick enough for use as a chamois cream, as they get absorbed into the skin. The idea of a chamois cream is that it is not absorbed and forms an anti-friction layer on the surface of the skin. You need a barrier cream for this use. Sudocream and Conotrane (£10 for 500g) are the cheaper options if not using udder cream. The other barrier creams that you get on prescription are silly expensive, such as LBF which is £15 for 100g tube. As a medical thing these are used to stop pressure sores, so are of course the ideal thing for use. I am a dispenser at a pharmacy, so deal with this sort of stuff regularly.

    • @Quizmate1
      @Quizmate1 3 дня назад +1

      @ysarn Rubbish, professional teams use Doublebase, as do I. There are no issues and works perfectly.

    • @ysarn
      @ysarn 3 дня назад +1

      @@Quizmate1 Yes, Doublebase is noticeably more slippy and slidey than those other emollient creams mentioned, and is marketed as a gel rather than a cream, so I will agree with you there. Having tried it on my hands as an emollient hated it, as it is so slippy.

    • @Quizmate1
      @Quizmate1 2 дня назад +1

      @ysarn agreed, it's too slippy for the hands or face I find. It's best used on the torso, arms, and legs, I think. Something like Cetraben is better for the hands and face. Interestingly, a poor fitting pair of shorts / chamois will chaff whatever cream you're using, I think.

    I recently started using a cream. I found it most useful on rides longer than 1.5 hours or 50 km. So, I do not use it on shorter rides which is 50 % of my rides. That way it last longer. While I agree that it would be beneficial for shorter rides too, it feels so much faffing around for short rides.

    Blimey ! I've had a 150ml tub of anti friction balm for probably a couple of years and I'm about 25% in. But I only need to use it for long sweaty or wet rides

    After nearly 35 years of cycling I have found a great combination to make your nether regions feel great while riding in any weather and distance. First I use a lanolin based diaper rash ointment on my crotch and anywhere on my arse that gets rubbed when riding. This creates an antibiotic moisture barrier that lasts and lasts. Rub it in good. Then I use a small amount of chamois cream on the pads of my cycling shorts. This combination hasn’t failed me yet and I ride in 90-100 degree temps here in south Florida. Also, never, never trust a washing machine to clean your shorts. Wash them by hand with hot water and good quality soap and make sure they are rinsed thoroughly.

    For years I've been using Kenkay sorbolene cream from my local chemist in Australia. About $6 for 500 gram tub.

    From my own experience chamois crème shouldn’t be needed if you have a good bikefit, the right saddle and a a good bibshorts. I stopped using it after these 3 were checked off ✅

    People from farm families have known about udderly smooth and similar products for many decades. I did buy one tube of “real” chamois cream to compare with udder cream. I probably won’t bother again. I don’t think there is much difference.

    At least in the US, this seems to cost almost the same as the not-top end chamois creams, so not a big savings, unfortunately.

      That’s a bummer, might be a case of grazing around for better deals at farm supple stores 🤣

    Wearing compression shorts inside improves it.
    It is not absolutely necessary to wear no underwear.

    I’ve used 250ml in 2 years. I just put it on the hot spots, you must be scooping it on! But then I put it on the skin not the pad.

    Have you checked the ingredients on the udder cream? Maybe it contains something that's potentially harmful to you, but the rules aren't as strict for animal products.

    I apply either Nivea cream or Dry Comfort lotion to my cheap Chinese padded underwear before every ride. I can ride for hours on end without issue. But then again, I'm not a competitive cyclist, so YMMV.
