It's probably 'cause on this song James' voice has a tone more screamy and hard to fit with his current vocal range and that could be one of the reasons 'cause this song has been played only 21 times until now.
Kill 'Em All solos are gonna blow him away. The solo in Trapped Under Ice is still pretty similar to the absolute chaos Kirk gets into in the first album's solos.
I never pictured being frozen in a block of ice unable to move. I always pictured being trapped in a lake with a solid sheet of ice above me. That explains the frantic, high tension pace of the song as you try to break though to live but to no avail.
Its shocking that for 4 straight albums there wasn't a single weak song. Never again have we seen that king of dominance....truly. Not even from the band themselves.
Well, 5 if you count the black album, which I do. But yeah, I know what you mean, metallica was grabbing the entire metal scene in the palm of their hands, probably their most dominating era.
This song - when the opening solo lifts off like that. Its like opening the front door to unvail a roaring blizzard blinding out the frosty night outside. There is a fantastic production to RTL that makes it for me. That nocturnal, wintery, icy feel to the album, culminating in the great Call of Ktulu, that sound like a great battle across an aurora lit frozen landscape.

That was 1985, after Ride was released but before Master, so this was at the time the most current. I was hooked. Went to Tower Records later that same day and bought Ride the lightning and Kill em all.
Load was weak for Metallica standards, Reload was better but still pretty weak. St Anger was a bad album. I kinda get why some people like it so much, but honestly I could never enjoy it as much as the old stuff. Death Magnetic was their redemption tho, apart from the production it was a pretty good album with some great bangers.
@@alexperez3367 load and reload really weren't lazy. They could've easily just come up with a black album 2 or just a thrash album that wouldn't be nearly as good. Instead they decided to venture into a different creative direction. Just because they arent thrash doesn't mean they're lazy
This is one of the best songs on the album, I like it better than "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Escape." Watching Alex's reactions to songs I've known for decades, I get to rediscover how awesome this music is. Way ahead of its time, also very complex and intricate considering the genre LOL. I dont usually watch a ton of reaction videos but i'm fascinated by this song lately. The main riff is beefy and the rapid fire series of solos makes this one of the best tracks in their entire catalogue imo
I used to blast this on my cassette WALK MAN ;) on my public bus & subway ride to high school ALMOST every day ....Sepultura was another but anyways ....By the time I got to school I had listened to both sides entirely . Damn right ....
Something that happens in my dreams pretty often is when I run, I get a few steps in, then I start kind of floating and running in place and I'm trying desperately to make sufficient contact with the ground to keep moving. Another thing that happens is I'll somehow get launched to some crazy height. Not hundreds of feet, or like into the sky, just high enough to know it's too high to survive the fall, which inevitably happens after a couple seconds of hang time. Nothing to do with this banger of a song lol but you shared your dream with us, it's only fair we level with you too.
James stated during the interview for Justice's 30th anniversary that he felt being disconnected from the rest of society would be, "the ultimate hell." His exposure to the book Johnny Got His Gun (which One is based on) as a kid kickstarted this. That's probably why the topic appears here in Trapped Under Ice (person cryogenically frozen) and in One (soldier blown to pieces, with only his mind still 'intact,' as it were). This and Escape are probably the two least known songs of RTL, but Trapped Under Ice did get played on occasion back in the 80's and on the Death Magnetic era tour. The middle section is probably my favorite part with the chanting.
This song was powerful for me in my youth. I tended to view it as the ice being a metaphor for society, expectations, and norms. :) I know that wasn't the intention but I was always walking my own path and I started viewing it that way when someone I respected told me that this song reminded them of me.
Another known fact about this song! The fast verse riff in F# was salvaged from an old Exodus song called 'Impaler' that Kirk wrote when he was in that band. Check out the re-release of that song on the Exodus album 'Tempo of the Damned' and you can hear the same riff!
Told you in the Fight fire with fire video! Underrated kick-ass song (as well as Escape).... Damn! This is my favorite Metallica song! As well as their best album!

Since you've been through some of the songs that they rarely play live (Frayed ends, Dyer's Eve and Escape, and also the instrumentals) here's the story of this song being played live. They played it twice in 1984 (one of those 2 days was Kirk's birthday). After that, a fan named Otto kept bugging them to play it. They jammed a part of the song at the Stone Baloon show in 1989 (you should check out the setlist of that show its mind boggling how many rarities they squeezed into it). So yeah they brought Otto up to sing with them on that jam, but he kept bugging them to play the full song live some day. Fast forward to 2000, they finally gave in and played the full song for him. They played it a few times in 2004 (very few) and then brought it back in 2009 as one of the alternates for the rotating sets. 2009 might be the year they played it the most. They continued doing that till the end of the Death Magnetic tour in 2010 after which they stopped playing it again. They played it one more time in 2012 as a one-off performance along with Escape because they were playing the entire Ride the Lightning album.
I remember being in my buddy Pat's basement and there were like 10 of us metal heads partying, slam dancing, and stage diving on his couch. Ah back in the day. Metal forever 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘!!! I cut school to see Metallica on this tour in Feb. of 85. Stood in the alley all day near the Aragon Ballroom with a bunch of buddies. It was cold and roudy. W.A.S.P. was okay but then Metallica hit us like a 747 man!

They continued doing that till the end of the Death Magnetic tour in 2010 after which they stopped playing it again. They played it one more time in 2012 as a one-off performance along with Escape because they were playing the entire Ride the Lightning album.
Trapped under Ice is rarely performed live and it is is shame. Such a great song imho. Great reaction choice Alex!
this is probably my second favorite song about cryogenic freezing. crionics from slayer is a BANGER!
Was in front row in front of Cliff Burton. I was deaf for 4 days, my neck hurt for a few days and when I stage dived I was caught. Good times.
W.A.S.P. was okay but then Metallica hit us like a 747 man!
Dude, I'm reliving my teenage years watching you listen to this music. Songs I've forgotten about for years are now added to my daily grind again
100% agree!
I'm pumped for the call of ktulu! It's another ride you'll like Alex 🤘🤘
I keep having a dream where it feels like I am running through treacle. Love your videos Alex xx
Hey Alex! Time to go back to the beginning. Kill em All. Greatest debut metal album.
I work with people with brain damage and Can’t stress enough how important things like helmets and other protection is. I’ve seen my fair share of people being “trapped under ice”. Unfortunately.
I’ve really come to like these videos. Didn’t think I would but I do 👌🏼 you seem like a good dude😊
Hand down my favorite Metallica song. So underrated and deserves more love.
You're right!
Best record and one if my favorite songs
