howdy everyone! happy 2020. :)
i started on this piece back in october, but it was left as a wip until now. i thought i might as well finish it, since i had already spent so much time on it!
consider this a sequel to my previous ppg speedpaint that i did several years back. since i've gotten better at drawing/character design, i'm glad i got to revisit the girls (and the guys!) i don't have ethnicities set in stone for them, since they are chemical spawn after all. it's nice to play around with how they could look like, though!
this is also inspired by a fic called 'more than human' where they're in high school? embarrassed to say but i'm into it, despite how painfully straight it can be at times. that's also why i try to make the powerpuff/rowdyruff counterparts as different as possible, when people make them look like siblings AND ship them together... i can't say i'm on the same boat
(also i drew them in the show's style because i found out that the pgg style is super fun to replicate lmao)

I shipped the Powerpuff Girls with basically all the Rowdyruff Boys when I was a kid, so this video definitely made my morning.

After growing up they then gained the amazing ability of having hands instead of their weird stumps that they somehow use to pick up things like seriously it's weird. But hey... HANDS
I always found that weird... Stubs for hands. Even in the episode where they turned into teens (for some reason, the RRB did, too) they still had stubs. XD Nevertheless, this version seems to do Justice. :3 Have a good Day/Night! :3

I love how you gave buttercup and butch sharper lines and features and kept bubbles and boomer really soft, communicates a lot about their character, nice job! love the redesigns 💕

While I love all the redesigns, there's one thing that brothers me, and I think it's blossom. While I think she looks gorgeous, I don't think it resembles much of her old design. Like I can tell she's supposed to be blossom when put next to the other two, but if she were by herself, I would think she where an oc.
That's my only issue with her. I think she looks amazing, but not like a blossom redesign. Like Bubbles and buttercup look resemble closely to their old design, while still remaining different.
I think the only thing I would change about her is her hair color. Maybe instead of a straight pink ponytail, Perhaps she has Orange streaks? I do really like the natural brown hair she has at her roots. But the unnatural pink hair look very out of place if that makes sense.
That's my only issue with the redesigns. Other than that, I think all of them look fantastic!
Even then, my criticism might just be nicpicking, so just take it with a grain of salt.

Glad I wasn't the only one. While the pink is cute, she's the only one who looks completely different from her orginal design and it looks really unnatural to begin with. I think a dirty or brownish orange would have been a better choice

I agree, Blossom's orange hair was kinda big in her character design so if her hair was a lil more that color I'd see the resemblance more. I think that the designs are still so cool-! :D
Hey, quick tip: the idea of flipping the canvas is so you can get a fresh look at it. If you flip it too often you get used to it in both orientations, so it doesn't really do much good anymore.

This is so cool! I love that you made them look diverse..while I do think some of the rrb x ppg ships are cute, it does throw me off sometimes since they look like twins :l and while the powerpuff girls was(and still is) my favorite cartoon, I wish the girls looked different from each other rather then just the same skin with different eye and hair color

The fact that messes me up with both the ppg and rrb, is that in one episode the professor explains to the girls and Mojo Jojo HOW they were created; which was that mojo knocked him into the chemical X bottle which landed into the mix and boom the girls were born. So to be honest the boys and the girls are somewhat related.
that’s exactly what I thought, now people can actually ship the PPG and the RRB without it looking them looking like clones lmao. plus it’s a lot more fun to have diverse designs in general

As kids did we ever tough about the designs tell me be honest you prod dident what made them stand out were their personalities not there skin color or body shape and it shouldn't tbh , built a carcter on its personality not background plus. they needed to be animation friendly so yea
@@miss_frogy7052 Imagine this: You're a Black kid who loves watching tv shows. Every show you see however, the main character/savior is white. Almost every character in every show you saw is white. The black characters on the other hand are either 1) background characters never to be seen again 2) characters who are walking stereotypes who only exist to be comic relief 3) Killed off while the white character survives and saves the day
It becomes really annoying. You're tired of seeing the people of your skin color being treated like a joke. You start to feel like a shadow, that you will never see people of your color get their happy endings.
Buttercup in this video has my skin tone. That would've been awesome to see as a little girl watching the show, I would have a character to relate to...someone who's the main character, isn't treated like a joke, and isn't killed off. Representation matters
I remember watching those episodes when I was a kid where they interacted, and I was soooo confused because I thought they were twins. This is a really cool concept though! And I love the outfits you put them in!

I love everything about this. It’s completely original and beautiful. I can feel a story coming from this and it’s so beautiful. It’s rare that I actually sit and watch a speed paint, but I’ve been looking at yours for 3 hours at this point. I loved that you changed the skin tones and gave them a certain aesthetic. This is really incredible (like all of your art). All of your characters are bursting with personality. The outfits, colors, and facial expressions are super clear and tell a very interesting story. However, I do have a bit of a nitpick if you're willing to indulge in it.
In my opinion, Blossom is kind of hard to recognize. I really adore what you did with her hair, but I would have opted for orange instead of pink to keep her iconic color scheme.

Thank you, as a black person I realize it's the same as whitewashing. I like the art, it's good, but it's the same as making a black character white for no reason. Like why? Sure diversity, but the characters race shouldn't be changed. It reminds me of what Marvel and DC are doing. 😒

@@remsleep934 Not really, they were all made from the same things, the fact that their hair and eye colours are different from each other *does* make a little bit of sense but overall, being made from the same things would mean they should be somewhat similar. I usually don't like it when the characters race are changed (mostly its because , but I love this Blossom so much~ She is hella pretty and looks actually like an adult version of Blossom and not like a completly character and not like an oc despite the characters race beign changed
Legit when I watched this video I imagined them in some sort of high school au okay so here are my ideas for this:
Blossom: One of the smartest if not the smartest person in the school who pretty much is a genius. Brick is sort of her rival and they compete with each other often over who is the smartest. She isn't very confrontational but if she sees one of her sister's or someone innocent being hurt Blossom will threaten to call administration. Blossom is honest and has a a heart of gold so the teachers will know she is telling the truth
Bubbles: A popular preppy cheerleader with a childlike nature. A social butterfly that everyone likes but is a target for bullies. If she sees someone or her sister's is getting hurt, Bubbles will record it on her phone, report it and show it to the administration as proof. Since she is so popular people will most likely back her up on the claim.
Buttercup: People assume that she is a bully but it's actually the opposite, she bullies the bullies. If she sees someone or her sister's hurt Buttercup will take it into her own hands and let the administration do the rest. Not the type of person you should mess with.

Miss_ frogy Yeah, it was a bit confusing, it would make more sense if the boys skin tones were closer to their counterparts. I think this was more based off of aesthetic. If someone did this with darker characters and made them lighter people would be livid :,)
i think the girl's races were changed to further insinuate that they technically aren't actually sisters, and actually look different from eachother (well, as different as stylised 1990-early 2000's characters could look), but if you were talking about the boys then yeah I don't really get why they have different races then the girls

@@miss_frogy7052 Actually I found it funny because Blossom has a pretty white girl stereotype attitude to her. Buttercup's redesign made more sense to me because she already had features that were easily translatable into the redesign. Blossom was what I will call, "blackwashing". It is a bit racist if the intention was to make the cast more diverse, however, I have no issues if this was simply a redesign of the characters.

So, you claim that you should change a group of all people of color to other races to be more inclusive?
If not, you just nullified your own statement by holding a double standard. It doesn't matter what race it is, going by the current logic of the internet this is "Woke-washing" a character.
I personally don't have a problem with redesigns a character that change the race and background. However, if this was truly meant as a "woke" statement... it isn't. You woke up in the morning and then snoozed the alarm because you technically woke up on time.

I have no issues with redesigns or the artist. I am a concept artist and character designer. I understand that redesigns can sometimes be a good thing.
However, my point was in the reactions of the comments. Saying that a redesign "fixes" an iconic design because they changed the color of the skin, without taking into account the personality and background of said characters, is not fixing a design.
That was the point I was trying to get across. I am sorry I didn't make that clear.

This is so awesome! It's so nostalgic yet very different. I love the race changes. I love Bubbles' body size. That said, it might have been better to use a lighter background to prevent Blossom from blending into it. Other than that, this is really well done.

the designs and the art are good dont get me wrong but...i dont get the point of changing the races of characters,isnt it technically the same as whitewashing? hell,Blossom doesnt even look like Blossom anymore,
Honney Cookie I agree it doesn’t really make sense to change Blossom’s or Boomer’s races.
whitewashing is a problem because it takes away from the existing representation a character of colour could offer. this is not the same. a lot of people of colour really wished they had characters that looked like them when they were kids because they were surrounded by a majority of white (or ambiguous but white passing) characters. i'm not here to argue whether it has to make sense with the character's story because it really depends on specifics, but just know the difference between this and whitewashing. that said, they should have kept the orange hair for blossom imo. white or not, a lot of redheads appreciated that about blossom
SIRKISSHY as someone who’s black trust me I know that whitewashing is bad and should stop happening. But I believe that if a character already has a canon skin color and if someone re-designs it they should leave the skin color the same, that’s just my opinion. If you see in media over the last few years they have been replacing all the gingers with people of color if it’s a remake or a reboot like The new She-Ra, or The live action little mermaid that is suppose to come out next year or in two years.Redheads don’t really have a lot of positive representation they get a lot of negative representation. You will not believe the amount of times I’ve seen people comment about Ed Sheeran being a “soulless ginger.” Believe me I know people of color need more representation in media but I don’t think it should be at the expense of turning white characters into people of color . It just feels like in my opinion that we’re getting sloppy seconds instead of having actual representation and having new characters with new and interesting stories. Anyway that’s my take on it hope you have a good rest of your day or night.
@@aliceelektra8801 i'm assuming you started writing your reply minutes before i edited my comment mentioning how the artist should have kept blossom's hair red. if that's not the case, then ignore this, but if it is, do know i still really appreciate your reply! i definitely have seen the mean spirited comments about ed sheeran, which i never liked, so i understand. you do make a good point that new characters of representation matter more than redesigns of existing characters, i just think that both ways can help differently with celebrating minorities somehow and that the issue is people tend to not consider other minorities they accidentally take away from when redesigning. i don't agree that darkening skin colour (as its own idea and not accompanied by the mistake of taking away from other minorities) is Baaaad bad because fair skin still remains the majority, it just shouldn't clash with what the characters go through in their stories. also, iirc, there are black people who were born with red hair. all in all, artists just need to be more mindful imo and at the same time, more interesting stories should be written.
again, thank you for sharing your take without any vitriol. basically i recognize that it can be a problem, i just don't think it should be described as the exact same as whitewashing, which is usually where the conversation often ends.
