I really love that shadowheart acknowledgement that they’re both elves and don’t dream (even though she’s half-elf) they go into a meditative state. You even see Astarion’s meditating. Look at his hands when he’s laying down

Playing my Drow Durge, I was amused that for plot related reasons, he or Astarion would actually sleep as the plot demands. Did some further research into it and apparently elves may sleep instead of meditating if they're in particularly rough shape, such as being ill or badly wounded. Drow also apparently don't mediate as often as other elves either, which I found interesting.
"We're elves, we don't dream" made me snort. So flustered by getting caught that he forgets what race he is talking to, haha. Though she is half-elf, so maybe that is fair.
This moment happens on the first night when you play Astarion. As Astarion can choose to break Cazador's final rule or attack an animal. If you play as not-Astarion you find a drained boar after the first or second night - which means Astarion chose not to feed on anyone until he is "desperate." I think it makes it all the more heartbreaking, canonically (when left to his own choices not the players) Astarion is too afraid to risk breaking Cazador's rule willingly until he is forced to.
I am pretty sure it is just the one dream scene. I think all the origin characters have their own sort of dream or event the first night you sleep.@@lunaryune
With Shadowheart you get one depending on your choices in Act 2. I don't actually remember Wyll getting one though, but he gets the whole patron dynamic.
You probably waited too long I guess? I've never heard of it happening that early. Because there is usually the scene of him sneaking out of camp on the first long rest if you play not-Astarion and then later you find a boar past the grove. @@metronial2047
His entire dynamic with Gale cracks me up so much. That's just the typical cat owner and a very unruly cat who try to one up another until the day they're either both worse or end up on the couch cuddling for hours in mutual trust and happiness.
I want to romance Gale as Astarion so bad now just from that scene. He was so caring toward Astarion, even with the more vicious 'lost control bite', telling him to spit it out. That's so cute. No way Astarion wouldn't want him after being treated with such unexpected care under such circumstances. So ironic since when you don't play as Astarion, Astarion can be so catty toward Gale and they get those sibling rivalry vibes going instead. lol I never would have paired them up till I saw this scene.
I wish more people were aware of the nightmare. They think he just lost control or was being an idiot. I always found it surprising he did something so reckless. The nightmare adds context.
He’s also desperate. If you rest between quests long enough in the non-origin story, you’ll find drained animals. He just either gets unlucky one night or the curiosity gets to be too much.
Vampires in DnD setting don't require humanoid blood, they can survive on animal blood indefinitely. It's not as "tasty" or empowering as humanoid blood, but they won't starve from it. Case in point, Astarion who is implied to never had drunk blood of sentient creatures in his 200 years of unlife. He didn't do it out of desperation or hunger like some say, he literally just wanted to know what it's like

Apart from the playable character side of view lorewhise I love about this feature how it shows how much voice and speech shapes a personality. Seeing Astarion when you chose him for your campaign is a whole other character than having Tav and interacting with him just because you have like 10% of his voicelines and speech in it.
The only reason I've held off an Origin Astar is because I'd miss Neils voice so damn much, it wouldn't feel like Astarion with his sweet, sappy, snark
I started my first playthrough with him because I wanted the more in-depth first-person perspective of his story, but switched to a Tav run halfway through Act 1 because I realized I was barely getting a _fraction_ of Neil's work with Astarion as the woefully silent protagonist.

Ok that was honestly a big mistake "We're Elves we don't dream" Shadowheart is a Half-Elf who do sleep and dream like normal people and must rest for 8 hours, Astarion is a full on high Elf who don't dream and don't sleep, instead entering a meditative trance for only 4 hours, thats why his hands are splayed out like that , hes in a trance, though technically he doesn't even need to do that as he is a Vampire

Also, there was a dialogue line about the tadpoles having something to do with it... but I think that's a leftover from when they planned to have all the characters have nightmares if they use their tadpoles too much. I figured it probably had to do with his fear toward his tormentor that drove him to feed on my character in the game. Peoples blood would make sense to make a vampire or vampire spawn stronger compared to animal blood. "He was free in a sense from his Master, able to go where he could not, but he was still bound to his master as long aa his masters undead heart still beat. Strength then was what he'd need, get stronger, till he could ripe the heart from his Masters chest."...😏
after 5 playthroughs made me realise: why are the others still sleep peacefully despite them making alot of noise 😂 not even a single dialogue about it on the next morning too

This scene seem to be missable if you reveal you are a vampire either through using the bite skill on anything, being outed by the vampire hunter, and/or confessing to any companion. Tested this with a full party patch 5. Wyll can be bitten and becomes a bit angry if you were caught. Karlach however Astarion simply refuses to approach/bite since he knows her fiery blood. Karlach approach scene seemed a bit bugged it showed approaching Shadowheart instead. If you give in to the hunger and kill someone with Astarion they can't be revived. The party did only comment on the dead companion. Confessing you're a vampire afterwards to anyone doesn't lead to a confrontation about you killing said character.

It was all about proving to himself he could disobey Cazador (which in ordinary circumstances he'd be more or less unable to do in meaningful ways due to the supernatural influence his master had on him), and at this point in the game he isn't necessarily a very moral person, or yet attached to his companions.
Also, there's a hierarchy in terms of the power in the blood... The blood of higher thinking humanoids is more powerful and was always denied to the spawn for that reason, and he would also restrict them to vermin as punishment, which sounds like it was pretty much always that way for Astarion. He has a dialogue when you aren't playing as him that you can get where he asks permission to drink from you, and explains that he feels week and his mind hazy because the situation has led to him needing more than he's normally allowed. Once you let him drink from you he gets a special buff and he describes how clear headed and strong he feels, as though he was feeling well for the first time in memory.
Why did Shadowheart say “Dream? but we’re elves we don’t dream like others do.” if she’s talking about “trance” why would she not dream like the others at all. After all she is not an elf but a half-elf. Am I missing something here?
D&D elves don’t sleep. They fall into a state of meditation called reverie where they relive memories from their very long lives, so they don’t technically dream.

You can actually detect his thoughts on bite night to reveal the truth as Tav as well, I believe.
He tells you later that you were his first bite beyond rats and bugs and animals. At least maybe its just the romance path that does?

He has a dialogue when you aren't playing as him that you can get where he asks permission to drink from you, and explains that he feels week and his mind hazy because the situation has led to him needing more than he's normally allowed. Once you let him drink from you he gets a special buff and he describes how clear headed and strong he feels, as though he was feeling well for the first time in memory.

Why did Shadowheart say “Dream? but we’re elves we don’t dream like others do.” if she’s talking about “trance” why would she not dream like the others at all. After all she is not an elf but a half-elf. Am I missing something here?

Do a long rest early in the game, I don’t know the exact cutoff but definitely before you reach the grove
