Hand Carving a Pie Serving Spatula

- Made from walnut and curly soft maple, this pie server was a really fun woodcarving project for a weekend afternoon. If I made it again, I would position the handle at an angle on the walnut board so the grain of the wood would be stronger across the whole thing - as is, it is probably weakest where it dips down to join the blade.

Really beautiful. Nice job.
Thanks!
One of the simplest, yet most beautiful pieces that I've seen.
Thanks so much!
That's one beautiful pie server!! Nicely done.love from 🇨🇦
Thanks! I'm glad you like it!
Your instruments are really sharp. Could you post a video on your sharpening process?
Maybe I will! I just use a diamond stone and a strop.
I enjoyed watching, this is great work
Thanks!
Nice work, however, you stopped too soon. Keep sanding and wetting between grits. First wetting at around 400-600 grit. Then 800, 1000, and then 1200. Then use Walnut oil as a food safe finish. After sanding to 1200 grit and then oiling your piece, let it set for a couple of days. Then sand with 1500 grit.
As a spoon carver myself, your project is beautiful and well thought out. I like the way you blended the different species of wood into a stunning flowing shape.
Personally I sand all my spoons and spatulas to 1200, spraying with water from 240 up. They are all as smooth as a baby’s butt.
Thanks! I tend to go back and forth on sanding - sometimes I stop at 220, sometimes I go up to 1500.
It's a nice piece but I doubt it would actually get under that first piece of pie. Or any of the other pieces. It's not flexible enough. But I did enjoy watching the process.
I couldn't say for sure since the pie I used it on already had a couple pieces taken out of it. But yes, it would probably be more effective for something on a flat tray instead of digging into a pan.
Not good job.
