Definitely worth the time spent making it. It sounds really good. I will have a go myself once I have worked out the measurements. Did you use guitar spruce for the front sound board?

I suspect making the wooden piece longer would give the louder sound. Also some people say it's not good to sand the edges.

how loud is this? you cant get a good tell due to volume mixing and speakers. but on the ground. in person. how loud is it? does the sound carry further than you expect?

I've been kind of fascinated with these ever since Crocodile Dundee. I've made lots of versions, basically every time I find anything that is roughly the right shape (dog tags, plastic tags, bits of wood, etc.). I've found that keeping them small and light makes them much easier to manage and the thinner the string, the longer the sound will last before switching modes. In the video, you can see an interesting phenomenon where the bullroarer oscillates between different positions depending on how it's rotating (you can see it going high and low when swung horizontally). Interestingly, you can do something similar without string by throwing anything relatively rectangular with a little bit of backspin. If you get it right, the Magnus effect will cause the object to fly around in the air and make the same kind of bullroarer noise.

About the handle: I can attest to the fact that adding a handle is a good ide; you wouldnt believe the amount of painful blisters that will result if you dont use one.

Remember the one from Crocodile Dundee 2, didn't know they had a name. Glad to know, there's a hiking spot near a huge valley that would be great for one of these.

G'day, Back in the 1990s the local Tribal Elders gave me permission to make and paint and sell Boomerangs & Gayandis ("Bull-Roarers") ; because I was a Propeller-carver, and I asked politely. My Channel has 23 Playlists, one is "Personal Aeroplanology..." & another is "Aboriginal Technology ". My guess is that you will probably be interested in "Boomerang Aerophysics ; Gyroscopically-Stabilised & Guided Autorotating Hubless Assymetric Swept-Wing Rotary-Winged Sailplanes...!" There's a couple about "The Boomerang-Carving Stone...!" There's one about, "Aerodynamic Aboriginal Artefacts...; Boomerang, Bull-Roarer And Woomera..." And there's a bit of a Series on "Magical Thinking..." Which has a couple of Videos devoted to Gayandis...("Bull Roarers"). And, whereas I can make and sell Boomerangs to anyone, with a verbal explanation ; the Gayandis were only sold with an Owner's Manual - because they're, literally, Magic-Spell Enhancers, or Amplifiers....(!). Whatever Magic Spell one wishes to cast - using a Gayandi will make it, In my experience, from observation..., about 5 times more effective than however "good" the Ritual would otherwise be. Eg, comparing Raindance Results, using 2 identical Raindances 25 miles apart, done in the morning when the breakfast Radio News forecast a "Slight chance of isolated showers..." For the afternoon...; resulted in 0.5mm in the Guage where a Basic local traditional Raindance was done - versus 2.5mm where the same Raindance was augmented by the use of a Gayandi...(!). Basically, the more I learned about them, the less inclined I am to go using them ; because the Universal Creator Godtheory to which I subscribe is held to be Competent & Benevolent, as well as the traditional, "3 Omni's" (Omnipotence Omniscience, & Omnipresence...). And, I rather suspect that using a Gayandi to "add weight to one's Prayer" might be Effectively, a lot like Taking an Amplified Bull-Horn..., Sticking it deeply into the Godtheory's Earhole, And then SHOUTING...(!). All the while..., professing my Faith in the Competent & Benevolent 3-Omni's type of Universal Creator Godtheory being ALREADY VERY WELL AWARE, Of EVERYTHING, Everywhere, and in Realtime...(!) {?}. So, yeah...; if you really want to go making and using Gayandis (?), then you should Probably Backtrack me to my Aboriginal Technology Playlist.., Therein to view some of my Back-catelogue - So as to have a bit better idea of what it is that you're trying to play with, For the fun of it (?).... Gayandis are Not, Actually, Simple Playthings..... The expression, "Not within a Bull's Roar of ..." Refers to the point that, traditionally, Women were not permitted to remain within the sound of a Gayandi ("within a Bull's Roar"/ sound of a "Bull-Roarer"...; on a Continent where Cattle (MooCows & Roaring Bulls) are all Imported, Introduced (Feral) {Noxious} Pestilential Species... Indicating that there is NOTHING Traditional...; about the name "Bull Roarer"...(!). Untangling the deeply culturally-ingrained Whitefulla's Blackfulla Stories from the underlying Actuality...; can take a lot of doing, I find...(!). By the way, I pay the Council Rates on a hundred acres of Regrowth Forest atop a Ridge 15 Km out of town, which I've run as an Endangered Species Sanctuary for 33 years. It's where I live, off-grid. After the first few years I was finding "Didgeridoo Blanks" - straight naturally-hollow Branches, 4 to 8 ft long, cut off square, leaning up against Trees and Stumps, and all 80 to 120 + years old - to look at...; and a "half-finished" Coolamon (curved Wooden-shell like a Half-Pipe, used for carrying gathered-up Foodplants, or small Game, a Baby, whatever needed to be held securely...). At the 21 year mark I was given custody of the Boomerang-Carving Stone..., at the 28 year mark l found the Stone Didgeridioo-Spokeshaeve,with two curved Cutting-Edges in different Radiuses..., and last year I found the Coolamon-Carving Stone - whose Eliptical Cutting-Edge ,(one of 3 - one being Serpentine & another one Straight & flat)..., actually FITS THE CUT-MARKS in the Half-finished Coolamon that I found, here, 30 years ago....(!). And, confusingly, 10 years ago my older brother told me that for a dozen years before I was born, our Grandfather used to bring him out here, precisely to where I pay the Rates - to collect Charcoal for his Blacksmiths Forge...(!). As the Tribal Elders put it, when they gave me permission to make and paint and sell Boomerangs & Gayandis...; "...Mate, if you can Explain Aboriginal Technology To the Whitefullas...; Well .., That would Have to be an Improvement...!" And, so, I do try. Currently 7 different local species of wild Unfenced Native Animals & Birds visit me daily, to eat from my hand and another 14 Species "only" come to drink at my Waterdishes, relax, hang out - and otherwise treat me as being a Harmless (though rare, and multi-Species, Shared... )Totemic Human. So, to fact-check me ; perhaps consult the Local Wildlife who know me best. Wild Kangaroos and Swamp Wallabies have zero tolerance of Bullshit coming from Humans ; and the ones who live around here treat me as being harmless, and friendly. I've known some of them since their 7-Greats Grandmother was a Joey in the Pouch...(!). Made these 50 years ago. Been wanting to make one lately to take hiking. Maybe a first defense for predators. Scare them off with noise, and if that don't work...then resort to physical means.
