Since this video is gaining popularity in 2020, I'll be answering a few questions. I used to be a long range rifle competition marksman in Canada, and have competed regionally, provincially, and in tandem with Canada's National Rifle Team (NRT). Although I'm not as good as the people I trained with, I can still provide valuable insight. The "horse blinders" serve to focus on your target, yes. However they are mostly used so you don't catch someone moving in your peripheral vision. You're lined up like a dozen side by side; you don't want Mark to your right busting one right as you're about to pull the trigger and it messes you up. It just blocks out the periphery so you focus ahead. Some people also decorate their blinders/hats with their medals and pins, so it's also a personalisation aspect. The weird glasses and patches covering one eye are used to essentially accomplish the same thing as shutting one eye. You might be asking "then why not just close that one eye?": when you close just one eye, it puts strain as your brain needs to focus on keeping that eyelid shut. Putting a patch in front while keeping that eye open tricks your brain into thinking that eye is closed, but you won't have to strain to keep that eyelid shut, since it's still open. When shooting, everything can mess you up: your breathing rhythm, your pulse, your posture, your timing. This sport isn't so much about physical prowess as it is mastery and control over your own body. It is very therapeutic, almost like yoga, since you focus on yourself and not your competition. Yes I agree this is a boring sport to watch. Even I wouldn't watch this, and I used to compete lol. It's like golf, fun to play but boring to watch. This sport isn't about speed or just hitting the target: it's about hitting the center PERFECTLY over and over. A few millimeters can make the difference between winning gold and not even qualifying. I myself never competed with pistols, i was long rifle primarily. To give perspective, we would shoot up to 1000 yards using just ironsights with 5.56 caliber and 7.62 caliber long range bolt-action rifles. Your average air rifle competition shoots up to 30 feet (~10 meters) indoors. I encourage people to try it, there's no gun people bravado in this sport, it's just really determined people trying to better thenselves. :)

I hate reading most of the comments below. This is all about one hand unsupported accuracy over 50 meters for points. It's not about making steel plates go "clang". In other words, the focus is on accuracy, not pouring bullets into a target. If you think this is "stupid", then you are NO shooter; you're just a "wannabe operator in your own fantasies". This is all about perfecting the fundamentals of shooting. Without the fundamentals, no other style of shooting is even possible. That is a fact that even real tactical shooters agree on. If you wannabe guys think this sport is so boring and simple, then you give it a shot. People don't respect what they don't understand. And if you don't respect the fundamentals, then you don't understand shooting.

+jarkoer It is good marksmanship, but it is boring to watch and even more boring to train for. I qualified for the 10m air rifle competition at the german championship in 2010. You have to train several hours a week, sweating in your shooting gear no matter the temperature and after all you are trying to hit a spot that is 0.5mm in diameter and 10 meters away. After a few years it got super unrewarding. You can just fix your rifle to a table to achieve the same thing. I stopped sport shooting for about 3 years, but recently discovered .22 IPSC. Granted, you don't have to be as precise as in the 10m air rifle discipline, but it is way more fun. You have so many different stages with different obstacles and target positions and instead of hours your whole run will be measured in seconds. I will never attend a static discipline ever again. For me the dynamic disciplines like IPSC, IDPA, trap&skeet and cowboy action shooting are the ones that will continue to go strong, the static disciplines will fade away, because they can not find enough young people that will stand still for 2 hours when they can have way more fun otherwise
Beautiful Greece Because there is more to the shooting sports than just defensive shooting. Yeah this isn’t practical from a combat standpoint, but it’s not what it’s all about. It’s simply who can make the best shot under ideal circumstances. Nothing wrong with it. When the hell is someone gonna need to ski down a mountain with a rifle to defend from tyrants? Probably never, but it’s to show the capabilities of athletes under stress, yeah it’s not combat stress but it’s still stressful enough to affect accuracy which is the name of the game in this sport. NASCAR isn’t necessary either or practical but people still tune in to watch 😂
This is like bowling if the camera was only ever on the guy as he threw the ball, but never on the pins to see where it actually went. It's impressive how boring they managed to make a sport about rapidly propelling chunks of metal with controlled explosions.

@@harveyknguyen some of them use aperture sights. It's a very small aperture that gives you more depth of field. Some people like it, some don't . It's not like it gives you a real advantage, and everybody is free to use them if they want. Magnification isn't allowed though, only prescription glasses.

(Still, both kinds of competitors must be and usually are quite good at what they do, You know.)

And swap rifles every round. You get 2 practice shots then it counts.
You just can do that at your local club, i do not think it worth a real competition.

I hate reading most of the comments below. This is all about one hand unsupported accuracy over 50 meters for points. It's not about making steel plates go "clang". In other words, the focus is on accuracy, not pouring bullets into a target. If you think this is "stupid", then you are NO shooter; you're just a "wannabe operator in your own fantasies". This is all about perfecting the fundamentals of shooting. Without the fundamentals, no other style of shooting is even possible. That is a fact that even real tactical shooters agree on. If you wannabe guys think this sport is so boring and simple, then you give it a shot. People don't respect what they don't understand. And if you don't respect the fundamentals, then you don't understand shooting.

+jarkoer It is good marksmanship, but it is boring to watch and even more boring to train for. I qualified for the 10m air rifle competition at the german championship in 2010. You have to train several hours a week, sweating in your shooting gear no matter the temperature and after all you are trying to hit a spot that is 0.5mm in diameter and 10 meters away. After a few years it got super unrewarding. You can just fix your rifle to a table to achieve the same thing. I stopped sport shooting for about 3 years, but recently discovered .22 IPSC. Granted, you don't have to be as precise as in the 10m air rifle discipline, but it is way more fun. You have so many different stages with different obstacles and target positions and instead of hours your whole run will be measured in seconds. I will never attend a static discipline ever again. For me the dynamic disciplines like IPSC, IDPA, trap&skeet and cowboy action shooting are the ones that will continue to go strong, the static disciplines will fade away, because they can not find enough young people that will stand still for 2 hours when they can have way more fun otherwise

Beautiful Greece Because there is more to the shooting sports than just defensive shooting. Yeah this isn’t practical from a combat standpoint, but it’s not what it’s all about. It’s simply who can make the best shot under ideal circumstances. Nothing wrong with it. When the hell is someone gonna need to ski down a mountain with a rifle to defend from tyrants? Probably never, but it’s to show the capabilities of athletes under stress, yeah it’s not combat stress but it’s still stressful enough to affect accuracy which is the name of the game in this sport. NASCAR isn’t necessary either or practical but people still tune in to watch 😂

there's no magnification on those glasses, the only people who get to wear anything to enhance vision are people who wear precription glasses0
@@harveyknguyen some of them use aperture sights. It's a very small aperture that gives you more depth of field. Some people like it, some don't . It's not like it gives you a real advantage, and everybody is free to use them if they want.
Magnification isn't allowed though, only prescription glasses.
